"Fairly normal sized".
Not on the same kind of scale as somebody like Big Mom seems to be.
Well, Admirals and even Teach, are at least proportioned normally. Or closer to normal.
G4 just looks… off. You know what I mean?

finally gear 4th showed up
Also, I'm hoping that Gear 4th is not used nearly as commonly as 3 and 4. I feel like this will be the case… Just a gut feeling there. If it's used too frequently, it'll become associated with Luffy's identity, and to be quite frank I don't want that lol. I feel like this Gear should be used on special occasions. I want to see this version of Luffy, in fights, maybe 20% of the time. Not because I don't like it, it is just very jarring.
I agree there, it really should be kept to a minimum overall. It's definitely not a form I want to associate with Luffy too often either.
I'm thinking like Gear 3rd and 2nd, we'll see Gear 4 moves isolated from a full transformation into the "Bouncing Man" form, such as having gear 4 legs using geppou or using Gear 4 punches
I also notice that he might not be able to do gatling gun style moves in this form.
Well, at least not pleasing to my eye lol
Well you said it there. It all really comes down to personal taste :)
Glad I only took a quick glance at the spoiler pics and stopped myself from looking into the Chinese scans.
That was awesome. I'm head over heels at this new gear, and the transformation's just as crazy as the gear itself. Absolutely love it.
I also like that he has his own version of geppou. Really love this whole compression and bouncing theme.
Interesting Gear 4th!
So, now Luffy blows his hardened muscle giving him this new level elasticity compared to hardened bones in Gear 3rd form. This also make him getting light and hard at the same time giving him ability to fly. This explains why he can't walk in this form - Bouncing man.
I also notice it's geppou which bending his fist while stretching. Creative.
Can you explain…if "Poundman" is the right translation as well?
On the first page he translates it as "Bounding Man", which I'm sure is far more correct. Bouncing may also be acceptable, though I'm guessing he says "Bounding" phonetically in English.
I do not udnerstand the Python attack… So someone can explain this, why this one is actually stretching?
Except it's not sky walk is it? It's the force from his springs just because they essentially let them both fly doesn't mean they're same technique, with your logic we may as well call Doffy attaching strings to clouds "Sky Walk"
No, but the principle is the same. They are using the strenght of their legs to bounce off the air, and propel themselves through the air.
And Doffy is using strings to do it, which makes it significantly different. More so the what Luffy is doing. And Doffy is not part of the crew, which also plays a part in evaluation.
I think it's amazing. Luffy bulked up, his power makes sense, it's creative, it incorporates the strengths of both previous forms (as well as poor bellamy's fruit), it has increased defensive capabilities, it has less of a windup and so much more
I just hope gear 2 and 3 remain viable. Red hawk, snake shot etc were fantastic and it'd be a shame to see them fall by the wayside so soon
Also next chapter Luffy will be in normal size with his gear fourth and everyone's going to breathe a huge sigh of relief when they realise that he has different modes. Imagine Fuusen was revealed as a technique for one of his gears would people be like "omg, is he always going to look like a huge round balloon in chapters to come?! Oh no I'll never wrap my head around it, what ever will I do?" that's what people are beginning to sound like. But the truth is Luffy looks intimidating as hell, I'm surprised no one's comparing his feats to Law's anymore, there's apparently a huge gulf in strength between the pair, is that now an accepted fact or does one want to show me Law shooting Doffy to the other side of the island with a single hit? Lol

Luffy's fist doing Geppou.
It seems that Gear 4 will have different modes, given that Luffy made a point of specifying a variety (Bounding Man). Imo, that is the most interesting tidbit.

I think Sanji has significantly more maneuverability though. It looks like Luffy needs both legs to perform one "hop", so maybe it's not something we'll see so often.

Possibly. It is a minor complaint in the end; I don't like techniques mirroring each other amongst the crew, it takes away their uniqueness, I feel.
I'm far more annoyed by other stuff, like the first three pages, if I have to be honest.

Hey, if we can accept two swordsmen and at least 5 members with fire attacks…
(Though I'm sure there's people out there who still haven't accepted it.)
About the Colorspread:
It is about an arc Oda done it before. It seems he is hinting it will happen again.
Does this means his return is upon us?

You also found meteors being sliced being weird compared to the immobile rubble that is getting pulled along with the contracting bird cage but one is based on gravitational impact and arrives with energy and the rubble has no energy yet you compare the two situations as if they should be one in the same and label it plot convenience… Yeah, ok.
Luffy and that form… one word: AWESOME !
I guess we'll see, but I don't believe Luffy will be able to keep up this form for long. Whether it's because of natural exhaustion or Doffy's assault, I dunno.
But, it will give Luffy enough time to truly harm Doffy. And then when Luffy goes back to normal, they'll be even.
I'm fine either way, really. If Oda intends to end the fight with a massive attack, then Gear Fourth will be required still.

Meh, I don't think we need more traditional zombies.
It's all about the cyborg bear zombies now.
So any idea as to why Zoro needs Kin'emon to stop the birdcage?
I'm split on Gear 4. On one hand, I love the concept of the ability and the spring-like quality of his limbs. On the other hand, the overall design feel too different from classic Luffy in a way that the first two Gears didn't. I'm with Robzilla on this one - I think the design would look a lot better if his torso remained closer to its normal size while the arms and legs remained larger.
The fact that the balloon effect of Gear 3 was usually isolated to one limb or another helped to preserve the small Luffy impression. In fact, having a giant fist or leg almost made him look even smaller in comparison.
If the name Bounding Man or Bouncing Man really is appropriate I'd like to see more bouncing around. I think Gear 4 definitely has some potential for fun, especially if Oda combines Luffy's serious face with some weird and humorous maneuvers. However, my early impressions are that it's a great short-term power up that's cool once or twice but not the type of thing we want see Luffy constantly resorting to.
I liked Gear 4 but
i wish it would look like this more

We currently still have no indication on how this form stands up to Doflamingo's string attacks. I'm thinking we'll se more of that next chapter since Doflamingo probably won't get anywhere going toe-to-toe with Luffy right now.
Doflamingo still has his own fruit that may still hold further surprises.

Yeah. I'd expect something like Kong-Bazooka with both hands and both feet.
Am I the only one that thought that was Monet biting Sanji on the colorspread? Obviously it's not but reminded me of when she bit Tashigi's shoulder and if Monet bit Sanji in a fight instead he would get a nosebleed haha
Comments on things other than G4:
Usopp being smart and explaining to Viola ;)
Zoro finally doing something ^^
So Law's arm got healed off-panel? lol
Ok g4 stuff:
kinniku baloon means muscle baloon :)
Nightmare Luffy lookalike… skipped leg-day like Jesus :D
Tribal haki - what the f.... ?
Lol at Doffla reaction :D
I wonder if anime will give some nice voice change to g4.
And here it is, spring attack it is after all ! Bellamy should see this :)
Wow power behind that attack was awesome :D Top left panel there's something around place of impact, where Luffy kong punched Doffla. Some haki defense that looks like a star? Or just visual effect?
Hahaha that surprised Doffla. What am I doing here? So G4 ain't no joke hmm Doffy? :p
And now Luffy flies! Bit like geppou but whatever :) That pose is a bit like Buffalo's when he was flying.
Hmm so he can retract his feets too. That's awesome. But it's also kinda weird... I mean he became big and muscular, but not to gain bigger strenght, but to be able to retract his hands and feet. Oh well, maybe he's stronger overall too.
It's interesting he still got his speed, since he basically soru'd there before the attack.
Tripple the damage! Here we go! G4 = 3 Luffys :D
But Doffla still isn't that beat up. And he can dodge G4. Seems like the playing field got leveled now. We're in for long struggle. Luffy vs Lucci style i think...
Haha dunno what happened, but Luffy's still rubber against haki. That's great. Since it was kinda boring everyone will got haki from now on, then rubber abilities of Luffy got kinda forgotten and nullified by everyone :P
And now he can use "snake" attacks. That's just great ;)
11/10

I agree on this, it was pretty much what I was thinking. Luffy seems to use it as a form of defense as well though to absorb attacks.
As far as people complaining about the roundness of his torso, I assume that's for full-body bounces that we haven't seen yet. A muscly torso would be less suited for that
Can you explain the "Kinniku" word he uses, and if "Poundman" is the right translation as well?
1. Luffy breathes air into his CoA-infused arm, and he calls it "Muscle Balloon" (Kinniku Fuusen)
2. Pound is wrong. It clearly says Boundman, as in bounce around. Because that's the whole point of Gear 4, turning into a hard superball.
I liked Gear 4 but

That loses the point of the bouncing.
Luffy blowing away the evil powerhouse in front of all the bystanders then literally bouncing after him quelled any discomfort I had about his new form.
For this form, I think it's necessary for his torso to be large so that it can absorb punches and since its roundness is necessary for a controlled body bounce.
In comparison, I think the head should be closer to Luffy's standard but I don't mind it too much and probably won't if we don't end up seeing it too much.

You want to bring real physics into it? Alright, let's start by explaining how the STRINGS can survive heat of hundreds of degrees, and kinetic force of several terajoules without bending an inch, while slashing through what is at least solid rock, and at most a amalganation of incredibly hard metals.
Afterwards, we can argue why the same strings can't cut through ordinary rubble.
Honestly my first reaction to this was WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO TO LUFFY ODA but the more I look at it the more I like it. Luffy went full on Hulk mode. He almost looks like Franky with the big arms. It's a creative use of his devil fruit ability + haki. I'm just glad this power-up wasn't something stupidly unrealistic. This is very much modeled after Nightmare Luffy so it makes sense Luffy would try to take on a form he used before.
I love the nightmare luffy eyes and the tribal tattoos are showing his animalistic /predatory side, I don't think they are tattoos of course I just think when haki does spread to his body or wherever for that matter they appear in a tribal style until that entire part is fully blacked out, it adds a sense of individuality about it that I hope becomes a thing with other major character's armament haki in future chapters.
I agree on this, it was pretty much what I was thinking. Luffy seems to use it as a form of defense as well though to absorb attacks.
Yeah, it's like I get why it is that way, but it doesn't mean I think it looks good. The opposite alternative would be to make Luffy even rounder to emphasize how awkward the form is. To me, that awkwardness didn't come across clearly as it should have.
So any idea as to why Zoro needs Kin'emon to stop the birdcage?
Because letting Zoro walk alone to any direction is mission impossible, even if the target is gigantic string cage reaching the skies.

Haha, touche

Yeah, agreed should've made it full on bounce man.

How is what I wrote "real" physics? I'm being logical, how is it that you seemed to have accepted meteors being slashed by strings to begin with? Why isn't that your complaint, how has the complaint developed into "motionless heaps of rubble are being dragged along so I'm going to whine because technically they should remain consistent with what was shown before and be sliced like cheese as well" except keyword here is motionless
Not sure if anyone wrote that already but when you let the air out of a baloon, it flies to random direction . When luffy exits this state he may not be able to control his landing point. That could be a drawback in the middle of a fight with birdcage above him.
The chapter was awesome. Personally I was expecting something more epic for Gear 4. I like the mechanics and how it works, but I don´t like how Luffy looks.
Because letting Zoro walk alone to any direction is mission impossible, even if the target is gigantic string cage reaching the skies.
They're actually just there to follow him and observe him. Since Zoro is trying to head for an edge of the Birdcage all around him, he will inevitably somehow end up outside it. The samurai are needed to retrace his path and share the escape route with everyone else.

Its what I'm preaching yo
Basically right now Doflas kicks and punches don't work or he'd have to kick Luffys head. Luffy got outmatched in speed again. Luffys defense perk was a wake up to Dofla.
The strings are what will put luffy to the test. Doflamingo actually considering the situation proves so too
I like the new design. The only thing that bothers me is that gear 4th feels superior to gear 3. I can only hope gear 2 and gear 3 will develop more into their own fighting style (for example, luffy being very nimble "monkey-like" in gear 2, dealing precise damage). I would have loved gear 4 if it was just an alternative to gear 2 and 3 instead of being something superior (well, luffy stated he needed gear 4 to defeat huge beasts on the deserted island so I guess he couldn't defeat them with gear 2 and 3?). Can't wait to see the rest of the crew develop more monster-like techniques that look absolutely inhuman.. Except for Usopp ofcourse.
So gear 4 is Luffy's nightmare mode mixed with haki?
I dont know why I was expecting something different.

Now that I think about it, Zoro is actually pretty confident in his navigational skills. I think it's the other way around and he doesn't want them to get lost.
