That's interesting. Facepalm-kun kind of reminds me of Kaneki, too.

Yeah, of course.
Still too little suffering, tho.
-
Still loving this series as much as before.
I'm really, really happy that Shinsou ended up having this kind of backstory. Can't wait to see more of him in the future. It made a nice parallel to Deku as well. I've wondered for a long while how Deku would react to other quirkless people now that he got a power, and though Shinsou wasn't really quirkless, I think his response of not knowing how to react was pretty good. It must be confusing. On one end, you know how it feels to be powerless - on the other end, you're not exactly in a position to tell them that.
And major thanks to the author for going through these fights relatively quickly. I guess the rest of the first rounds will take ½-1½ chapter each.
The way he's handled the pace since the tournament started has been wonderful. -
What does the general education department teaches anyway?
All the kids seem to hate it. Couldn't Shinsou simply go to another heroes academy? -

Well, the name itself should give you a clue.

Well, considering Yuei is a hero´s school, I expected more than Math and Science.

It has a section for heroes. It does not mean they teach heroic things at every section.

Math involving velocity of your fist connecting to a villain's face.
Science of impact and energy transferring to the villain's skull.Makes perfect sense to me!

Slightly getting off-topic are we?
New sketch for Chapter 34:
It has almost been too long since we've seen Aizawa's real face… Horikoshi comments that the color page of Todoroki (unintentionally) ended up looking like Kaneki lolYeah SNK, the last manga that broke the million mark in sales per volume.
Todoroki isnt emo yet like Kaneki.

Pre-battle witty banter hero-villain trade, of course!
Gotta keep those taunts updated with the modern culture. -

What if Deku beats Todoroki because Todoroki quits the match after he got forced in using his heat powers, then gives a big FU to his dad.
-
That sounds terrible
-
i mean he said it was over for him the moment he uses his heat power, he will win in terms of telling his dad to stick it, it will also keep Todoroki strong, Deku would have him easier if he gets Iida in the semifinals.

"You did just as well as the guy who got third in the obstacle course!"
Is that line a mistranslation ? If it's not, can someone explain it to me ?Edit: After checking Fallen angels translation, a mistranslation it must be.
-
It's a weird line regardless. He placed first in the obstacle course; why write it as "in the top 3"?
-
Not a mistranslation. That's what it says.
But yeah I had no idea about that line, and I told the editor as much.
It's very clearly "guy who got third in the obstacle race," but…that was Katsuki. Not Izuku.Maybe another mistake? Like the time Horikoshi wrote that there were 13 cavalry teams instead of 12 and then corrected it via twitter? Or the time SJ wrote the furigana for Koji Koda as Koji Kuchida? Odd either way.
-

Well, remember how those two from General Ed. were commenting about Katsuki when Midnight called him for a speech as the representative of the students, since he placed 1st in the Heroics Entrance Exam? Maybe that's why.
-
The comparison still makes no sense though…
Also, the original line (before editors altered it to make it more ambiguous to slightly obscure the weirdness) was "you put up a great fight against the guy who got 3rd in the obstacle race." Wonky no matter how you look at it.

Yeah, I figured it must have been an error but I wrote it as "one of the kids in the top 3" to smooth it over
-
Right that's a pretty good solution.
I'm hoping they'll let me make it right for volume 4, at any rate.
-
The problem was present in Chinese too.
But I figured Glib's workaround would work fine for it so I didn't bring it up. -
@Bond:
! Well, there are a lot of fights to go through. If every fight were a back and forth volley of equal punches, it would be way too tedious.
I'd only want that for Kirishima vs Tetsutetsu.
! Also, the current chapter hasn't been released yet has it? Or has it? I don't actually keep track of the Viz release.I can't really tell, here in Brazil I follow the manga in a Brazilian scan, last chapter was Todokori's fight. And I agree with you, I want to see who will fight who after the preliminaries.

! Can´t really say I´m happy about how that progressed, especially Ida´s and Momo´s/Fumikage´s.
At least we go straight to the main event. -
! Fast paced fights… Not a fan.
! Some of those fights had the potential to be great, but whatever.
! Bright side, the main event is close. -
! Hm… I can't read Korean so I can't really tell if it's a good or bad thing.
But looking at the pictures alone, the hardening vs steel fight is amazingly hard-boiled!
It's a shame that the fights are being resolved so quickly but...I guess it's not their time to shine yet.
Also, Gadget Girl's quirk is revealed but I have no idea what it is... -

! Wow, Mei's fight was really predictable, huh. People were saying she'd throw it for weeks now.
! I was really hoping Momo would win her fight, though. Such a shame. -
! This was super fast paced! :getlost:
! If the problem was bad content, but no, the content is amazing, but the author is all the time deciding to jump stuff. I just hope that at a given time he stops doing that.
! The Anime can use those parts to extend the content easily. If done well, the series will become even more amazing! -
! Yeah, that was a little too quick, but going to wait the full chapter. I mean this is a new series, so it's understandable that you might not want to drag some stuff out, but most of the fights in one chapter? Even if it's quick, the tidbits of the fights still do look to be really cool, tho.
-
! The series is far too young to be spending 5+ chapters on supporting cast fight match ups. Skipping through the fights is a shame, but given it was inevitable I'm happy with the way it was handled.
-
! At least it can be filler when the series finally gets an anime.
-

! There was no need for 5+ chapters, 2-3 chapters were enough, 1 chapter for 2-3 battles was enough. Here we have 1 chapter for 5 battles and big focus in Ochako that will fight next.
! There is no such thing as a series being to young to spend 5+ chapters on supporting cast fight match ups. Naruto way earlier, starting at chapter 17, spent 5 chapters with climbing trees and telling the Story of Inari, a supporting character that later got no relevance whatsoever.
! So,
can Naruto spend 5 chapters in climbing trees and telling the story of 1 supporting character, starting in chapter 17 and without it being to early?
can't MHA spend 5 chapters in 5 fights between 10 supporting characters, starting in chapter 35 because it is to early?
! Ask yourself, who do you think is more relevant for each story, Iida or Inari? -

-
@Purple:

! Dragon Ball at chapter 36 started the first tournament public round phases. Firstly a round of 8(4 battles), all rounds took 1 chapter excepting Son Goku that took 2 chapters. So 5 chapters! Also to note that in Dragon Ball 4 of the other fighters were no ones, only 1 of them could even be called a supporting character, and hardly.
! As you said, "full fledged tournament with multiple rounds", right? I don't see why a legend like Dragon Ball could make it without any detriment, but Boku no Hero can't even make the battles with double of its pacing(2 battles per chapter) and while using characters with more relevance than the ones that Dragon Ball used.
! Ah, is because is to early in the story, right? Wait Dragon Ball was at the same number of chapters as well! -

! Ah, is because is to early in the story, right? Wait Dragon Ball was at the same number of chapters as well!! And yet a majority of those characters aren't people who have great potential to be developed. We never see the fat smelly dude or any other guys. These fights should take time for the fights (although Deku's fight was somewhat disappointing because of how short it was, but shinsou had no other combat ability otherwise). Look for example at how long the tourney took for Shokugeki no Soma for a series of characters that actually need fleshing out and actually getting it. Took pretty much a whole year to get through it.
! And now you have all these interesting characters who attend the same school and are likely to show up again and get fleshed out as legit characters, each requiring a few chapters per fight as well as maybe some sort of interlude chapter inbetween. It's a way different picture than Dragon Ball who only had a handful of characters to truly juggle all those matches at one time, especially for a newcomer series by a mangaka who's been working on getting a solid, long running series for awhile. -

The picture is different to the point where the battles should take even more time than the ones in Dragon Ball! So taking 1 chapter, that in reality was half a chapter or maybe less, given that a big part of the chapter was focused on Ochako and her anxiety to her match, to show 10 characters fights is not OK. More 1 of those characters is Iida, one of the most important secondary characters in the story right now and highly always.
! If because it is early in the series, there shouldn't be much time spent in a 16 round phase(6-7 chapters. 2 to Midoryia, 1 to Todoroki and Bakugou, around 0.5 to each of the other fights), something that I totally disagree, then the problem is of how the author structured the story/tournament. Rushing so much is not a viable solution to that problem!
! Shokugeki no Soma went in depth with all the characters in all phases and did pretty well, and did it also pretty early in the story! The author of Boku no Hero Academia could do the exact same thing and it would go fine just like it went to Shokugeki no Soma. -

SnS did the tourney 1v1 thing after a year of solidifying its placement in Jump, developing Megumi and Soma, introducing the Italian Bros, giving everyone enough room to breathe, and giving the school and its culture some depth. It's not that MHA shouldn't be developing its characters. On the contrary, it's more of developing the key players this early on in the story. So Deku, Kacchan, Todoroki, etc etc get some spotlight while lesser important characters shouldn't be fleshed out prior to the principle cast
! Iida vs Gadget Girl, sure that could be fleshed out more, but in principle I think the idea is that Ochako vs Kacchan is going to be something big, and judging by the level of detail that the chapter goes in in terms of Deku's interaction with Ochako, she's hyping herself up to be something really important to her as opposed to Gadget Girl showing off her babies and then forfeiting -
Ok guys, here's this weeks summary:
! Kaminari vs Crown of Thorns ends with instant victory for Shiozaki.
Her quirk is "Vines". Her hair is made of vines that she can freely control and chop off.
The vines will grow back as long as she gets enough water and sunlight.
Kaminari couldn't keep calm and let out too much electricity at the start, turning him into an idiot.
! Ochako notices Deku mumbling and writing down notes on "Vines" (He compared it to Kamui Wood's quirk).
Deku tells Ochako that all of Class A's data is recorded in his notebook, including her "Zero Gravity".
Ochako has an "I just met a stalker" face (lol).
! Iida vs Gadget Girl. Iida is allowed to wear all that equipment because both contestants agreed to it (Normally, the equipment would need to be registered before hand, like with Navel Laser's belt).
Iida was touched by Gadget Girl's "sportsmanship" and agreed to wear her gadgets to "even the playing field".
As the battle went on, Gadget Girl took over Present Mic's spot as announcer, using her microphone, and started introducing her babies functions and capabilities.
She turned the entire match into a demonstration of her gadgets basically.
Her quirk is "Zoom In", which lets her see over 5km (I bet those goggles she always wears enhances that range). She uses it to find representatives from Support Equipment companies.
After 10 minutes, Hatsume finishes her demonstration and steps out of the ring.
Iida: You tricked meeeeee!!!
! Ochako heads to the waiting room, where Iida meets her.
Deku finds her soon after.
Acid vs Navel Laser ended after Acid damaged his belt and KO'd him with a Shoryuken!
Shadowbird vs Creation was one-sided, and nothing Creation created was enough to stop Shadowbird's shadow.
! Deku formulated a plan that could maximise Ochako's quirk against Kacchan.
But Ochako refuses.
When she saw Iida challenging himself against Deku, she felt ashamed of herself. She thinks she teamed up with Deku not because she could work better with people she's close with, but because she wanted to rely on Deku again.
Now she wants to do things with her own power.
! Hardening vs Steel ends in a draw!
After they recover, the winner will be determined by something like arm wrestling or whatever simple game they can think of.
! With that, the next match is here.
It's the Embodiment of Ferocity vs Ochako!
! On the subject of the fights' pacing, I do think it's a shame that we didn't get to see more of the fights… But we're still early in the story. I'm sure we'll get to see more expanded fights with them later on. -
! Nice. Thanks Bond
! And yeah that's the crux of it. Would we like to see more fights that are longer and more fleshed out? Hell yeah. But for a rookie series that just came out this year? It may not be the best time for Horikoshi to throw out fights with interludes featuring the secondary cast.
! But there's always the future. -
! Agreeing with the general opinion here, I'm a little disappointed that most of the matches were glanced over. I understand if the author doesn't want to drag things out, but hopefully we'll see more of these characters in the future. Shame though. I was looking forward to Tokoyami and Yaoyorozu's match, and especially Tetsutetsu and Kirishima.
! And oops, I guess I was wrong about Hatsume's quirk being intelligence. It's a little disappointing, but no big deal. Zoom is pretty cool too without interfering with her gadgets.
I wonder if there are any intelligence-boosting quirks…
! As for the last match, I'm still betting on Bakugo winning, but it's going to be a close one. Really, really close.
!
! Might as well update this
! Midoriya vs Shinsou (Slave Master)
Todoroki vs Sero (Tape)
Shiosaki (Thorn Hair) vs Kaminari (Lightning).
Iida vs Hatsume (Gadget Girl)
Ashido (Acid) vs Aoyama (Navel Laser)
Tokoyami (Dark Shadow) vs Yaoyorozu (Creation)
! Tetsutetsu vs Kirishima (Hardening)
Uraraka vs Bakugou
! The 3rd match was to be expected to be honest.
! –--
And the entire tournament. Had to change a few.
! Round 2
Midoria vs Todorki

Ashido vs /Yaoyorozu/ Tokoyami
