It's the culmination of the same shit 100 times in every video game thread. The specifics cease to matter. And I'm really not insulting everyone. Hell, you thought I was insulting YOU earlier somehow haha. When I was addressing Rin who I get along with quite well.

Its all about Castlevania 2 which was almost literally impossible to complete without Nintendo Power giving you some hints on the obtuse things you had to do that that game didn't actually tell you about, like taking a certain item and kneeling for five seconds in a certain place.
Or the Ninja Giaden games or Battletoads or what have you. Things where they had the mindset of "we don't want kids beating this in one weekend so crank up the difficulty" or when it was an arcade game meant to munch quarters and they didn't adjust at all… or just early bad coding in some respects.
-
VERY early games had to pad themselves out with (artificial) difficulty because it was the only way to make the game last a while. Unless it was a repetition-based game like Tetris or Pac Man.
-
Ooh, the Completionist tackles the remake of Majora's Mask:
(note: unlike the Gamexplain review, it's more comedic)!

Ok, only gotten to Woodfall so far, but this far I agree with these guys wholeheartedly. (Tho, I agree with the guy who didn't like the save system more on that one, but do agree that it's not enough to fully detract)
-
Well (possibly to the shock of many of you), the game will be waiting for me when I get home from work and I'm actually pretty excited to start playing.
-
Dude, we complained about the game. We have no right to enjoy it.
-
Can't wait to finally get it and see it in motion. I'm all for immersion, so I'm the kind of person that didn't watch the millions of videos that have come out in the last month so I can save most of the experience for when it's in my hands.

Yeah, I kindof avoided a lot of that. Galaxy has been streaming the original, and I even avoided that because I want this playthrough to be as fresh as possible. It's been over a year since I last played the Original, so I'm actually seeing a lot of this stuff fresh. I honestly can't remember how to do the Kafei and Anju quest at all, so having to explore and talk to NPCs to do this is exciting.

Beat Woodfall and some random quests (just wrapped up my first real cycle). Game looks great. Everything runs really smoothly too and I'm having tons of fun. Weighing in on issues brought up earlier:
-The Deku Scrub hopping really does suck now. It feels so bad.
-I hate that the new Bomber's Notebook counts every. little. fucking. thing. i. do. as a quest. If I play the archery game? I don't need the notebook to give me a quest. If I fail the Deku Scrub platforming minigame? I don't need a failure recorded in my quest log. I don't need to automatically know that I don't have all available prizes. I don't need to automatically know a lot of the stuff it makes explicitly clear instead of letting me find out if there are more rewards or upcoming challenges. The way it freezes the action right when I either want to retry or collect my reward really really annoys me. UGH.
-The fairy they made easier in Woodfall is the one fairy that was a bit tricky to find. Shocking.
BTW if you get a perfect on the Clock Town shooting gallery on your first try, you only get the quiver. Totally not bragging :ninja:

I won't have the game until thursday, but…
-The fairy they made easier in Woodfall is the one fairy that was a bit tricky to find. Shocking.
! Is it the one under the central wooden platform in the room with the winding boardwalks? That you have to shoot an oddly-angled bubble at?
@Mr.:
It's so awkward to see Nintendo try to make the game more accessible. Making an all-accessible game is great in theory for business, and I assume part of the reason for the handholding is that business strategy (if you could even call it that), but didn't Nintendo once say they're all for going in new directions with things, and not always playing it safe? Hence the unorthodox nature of the Wii when it was released, and the bold steps with the Wii U.
…And yet around the Wii's release, they start the hand holding. I get why, but it's… a bit counter-intuitive.I think it's a matter of… "innovative" hardware gimmicks =/= innovative, niche games.
I mean, the majority of my favorite game series are still Nintendo ones, because yes- in quality they're still heads and shoulders above mass market, new-iteration-every-year crap from most blockbuster publishers- but the gimmickification has clearly taken a toll on the games, and trend-wise, it has gone hand-in-hand with...hand-holding. The wiimote was specifically designed to be more accessible than the scawwy button-filled PS3 controller. So easy that even grandma can play Wii bowling. Youtube guy Matthew Matosis talked at length about how this dumbed down Mario Galaxy's gameplay/moveset (as compared to 64/Sunshine), in a way (he also mentions how nearly everything else about the game was pretty cool).
The DS touchscreen and 3DS 3D aren't quite the same, because the original gameboy buttons are all still there (and then some) but they still feel like smoke and mirrors that try their damndest to serve as distractions when something else is missing. And the Wii U gamepad? Nice for Netflix browsing, but I haven't encountered a game yet that couldn't have functioned perfectly fine without it, and it's clear when even second-party developers sort of don't know what to do with it (like DKC:TF).So I think they see the "playing it safe" with accessibility in newer games as a very different thing than the hypothetical "playing it safe" with hardware, which would involve making a run of the mill system with no gimmicks in direct competition with PS/XB/Vita over technical specs (which would still win my heart because of beloved franchise loyalty :P). In both cases the decisions Nintendo has gone with have been about what they perceive as survival. Gimmick systems->assumed non-hardcore audience who prefers flailing to buttons->assumed "family" audience->assumed fussy children who would give up on games at first roadblock. I'd be surprised if some version of that flowchart never appeared on a whiteboard/powerpoint in a meeting room at some point.
But it is insulting, both to longtime fans and especially to all the children who actually wouldn't give up :P -
Well fuck what they did to the Goht fight. It's not harder or easier or anything, the eyeball is just needless annoying padding. You can no longer just keep rolling into Goht when he's down, even when you knock him to one of his sides. Switching out to normal Link is a needless momentum killer. The eyeball just objectively makes the fight worse. It's not that huge of a difference, but what even were they thinking?

Agreed on all counts. Fuck the Bomber's notebook prompts. They're like achievements but more intrusive.
Also same on the Clock Town shooting gallery. I just did it this instant for the first time and got perfect. Aonuma really needs to get good, haha.

Hey now, guys, I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation for the eyeballs.
Maybe they represent Majora's eye.
Or some shit.

Yes it is which i don't mind because it was hard to miss

Ayuppp that's the one.

Wanna get the Bunny Hood before any serious questing. I know you have to help out the barn guy in Romani's Ranch (third day when the boulder gets removed), but you need the Brennen Mask to help him out. Hmm…..
-
Well, I just counted to exactly 10 seconds on my second try without using the bunny hood.
All I have to say is AONUMA GIT GUD.
-
Also I noticed a thing that wasn't(?) in the N64 version: when Deku Link spins, there's an opening on the back of his hat that's like a spiked snare.
-
I have beaten twinmold and i think he is the only boss where the eye makes sense
! When there are 2 of them the red one tries to attack you and the blue one flies around but has eyes on his body (starts with 3, then later 5). When you shoot the eyes he falls down and the big eye comes out and then he moves around in a circle twice, during this time you have to shoot the moving eye (it's a bit like the snake part of puppet ganon).
! After the blue one dies the red one summons a new enemy (babymolds) but a chest appears containing the giants mask and the giant's mask is fucking awesome now. So much that i'm spoilering it again if people don't want to know what link does
! >! Link becomes the hulk and punches the babies to death while either punching the other twinmold or throwing rocks at him to bring him down and then you fucking throw the bastard like he's bowser and bash him into the ground till his eye comes out.
! Magic is easier to get in this fight now as well which is good.Only 1 mask and 3 pieces of heart to go till the moon!
-
BTW if you get a perfect on the Clock Town shooting gallery on your first try, you only get the quiver. Totally not bragging :ninja:
I did it on my first time as well. Are you able to do it again for other stuff? First time playing this game through when I'm not a child, haha. Also, you have to do all the other games in a row to get the heart piece right? Bombers notebook made this confusing.
-

You'll get a heart piece by doing it again. And yeah play the deku and bomb mini game once a day for a apiece of heart

Yes, you have to play those games each day, in the same cycle, in order to earn the heart pieces.

Alright, thanks. Only game I have any trouble with is that damn Deku one, haha.

Thanks for reminding me how much I miss that version of Princess Zelda (Link on the other hand…)

Ok guys i beat Majora's Mask 3D. I loved it the whole way through. For the most part the moon is largely unchanged except for 1 major change and 2 minorish changes:
! The two minor changes are Fierce Deity Link who i think is smaller this time (he's smaller than the mask form of the boss) and that there is a feather save on the moon now.
! The big change is the Zora part of the moon which has seen a major overhaul. Rather than just moving through a massive series pipes and hoping you find the exit, you now have a time limit to move through some pipes to reach a door. At first there are only two pipes but the number and layout of the tunnels increase as you move through the doors. It also requires a well-timed Zora jump out of the water in order to land on the platform.
! Unfortunately there is no master quest. Sad times :(
! I also went fishing and instantly caught the Terminian Loach. It get's you nothing so i probably won't try the great sea fishing hall.So i still love this game to bits. Whether i prefer this to the original is hard to say. Both are things that make them better than the other. Despite all it's annoying pop-ups i found the bomber's notebook to be super useful and a great addition to the game. The game looks beautiful and all the little details make it really memorable. While the original is harder and Goht is better in the original i found all the other bosses much better this time around. The gyroscope controls actually work amazingly, much better than in ocarina where i turned them off. All the side-quest remain in-tact with no changes except for some minor points (goron link being required for the room, the troupe leaders mask doing absolutely nothing this time around). As for the save feature it actually made the game harder for me. That might seem weird but because i saved often, when i realized i made a mistake in a quest i could not just turn the game off and reset the cycle to fix it like in the old one. I just had to live with it because i saved past the point of no return.
Majora's Mask 3D was a great game. I dunno when i'll replay it but i likely will replay this version than the original because it is convenient.
-
Wait so is there no reward for fishing? Like permanent reward I mean.
-
Wait so is there no reward for fishing? Like permanent reward I mean.
It doesn't look like it. When i caught the Terminian Loach it said: 'Wow, it's 20cm! That's the biggest you've caught!' and then he let's it go. I wouldn't mind if there was like a fish notebook and you could catch different types of fish and they get recorded but i have not seen one and i can't be bothered to keep fishing. I have every mask and heart piece so they are not rewards. There is one slot left on the item subscreen but i have no idea what it is because i have every item from the original.
So apparently certain fish appear at certain times. See if there was a book it would be fine but there isn't and that is dumb:
http://gameswiki.net/the-legend-of-zelda-majoras-mask-3d-all-fishing-hole-locations-guide/ -
They actually invested work to make the fishing pond pretty deep with a lot of variety that requires a lot of experimentation and no permanent reward for people who don't enjoy fishing.
I'm impressed, actually. Good job, team.
-
Well I wasn't gonna bother fishing anyways…..Hylian loach flashbacks. Just one of those time sinks to relax to, I guess?
Anyways.....I'm up to Woodfall! It's been mostly my N64 version memories guiding me, but there is something I didn't do before - getting magic beans to plant in front of that stump near the south of Termina....too bad the reward was just a damn rupee.
Still, I got a new piece of heart from taking down a cave of dodongos. One in the deku garden, one on the clock tower, one on the boat shop....I'm forgetting another one, but I got 4 hearts now.
other notes
-got bombs, deku sticks, deku nuts, photograph. Scarecrow's song, adult's wallet
-atm, got Bunny Hood, Deku Mask, Great Fairy Mask, Blast Mask, Kamaro Mask, Brennen Mask.....I know you get something from dancing with the Rosa sisters, but maybe I jumped into the cycle too late. I'll try again later.
-still getting used to the deku momentum spin nerf
-It's really neat you can reach the notebook with a simple start press, and I guess the notification of a new trouble/mission is good for building the log. I haven't really followed it for hints, since again…..I mostly did things I remember doingInteresting that the Song of Inverted Time got nerfed a little bit (roughly 1/2 speed opposed to 1/3 speed, right?). I know the inverted and double songs are just manipulations of the Song of Time, which you come to learn by heart, but I still like that they're listed in the song sheets.
-
I just beat Stone Tower Temple. I have to say that I think the Twinmold battle is an overall improvement. The whole eyeball vomit is still unnecessary as ever, but the new fight minus that conspicuous detail, was actually pretty nice (unlike the 'improved' George fight where the new phase blew hard). Twinmold is the one big thing besides graphics that I think was actually better than the original. That's it.
-

http://gameswiki.net/the-legend-of-zelda-majoras-mask-3d-all-fishing-hole-locations-guide/Aw not even a fish notebook recording what you've caught? I'm almost surprised it's not recorded in the Bomber's notebook. I was kind of expecting there to be a reward in some form. The extra inventory space could just be an artifact of having a rectangular grid for items and having left-over space. A Link Between Worlds also had one empty slot.

I'm pretty suren that is what the spot is. Turns out that there is a board that shows you what fish you caught but you have to go through all of them and it's only fish in whatever area the board is in (swamp or ocean). Also every day/cycle changes the fishes so there are 3 common ones and 2 specials every day
-
By the way, there IS a 7th bottle, which may fill in that last inventory slot. I challenge you to find it without a guide. If you want a hint:
! It's a new event that starts in Clock Town and requires you to use a specific mask
Also: -
By the way, there IS a 7th bottle, which may fill in that last inventory slot. I challenge you to find it without a guide.
Challenge accepted however I will ask for one more hint or at least a nudge
! it involves the gormon brothers and/or the troupe leaders mask right?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Never mind about the extra hint, I did it. My instinct was right
! I thought it was weird that the troupe leaders mask did nothing. Literally followed him until the morning of the second day when the quests activates and did it. I like that they give a reason why you can't roll
-
Nice, good job. Kinda wish I hadn't spoiled myself.
-
Today I just realized, after 15 years no less, Odolwa speaks native language when you're fighting him. Yeah, I'm that slow, but how can you expect me to notice that when I was barely 12.
-
Kotaku published an interview with Aonuma discussing how Zelda dungeons are made.
-
Got my 100%. I think I've exhausted all I have to say on the remake, really.
About the last sections on the moon, the goron dungeon felt a little easier, probably do to slightly enhanced rolling physics. The refraction works a lot better, at least I think it does. To make up for that, though, the zora section got worse. It's not harder, just more frustrating. Instead of just being a bunch of forks, it's split up into three sections, each with a correct path. At the start of each section, you have to hit a timed switch, which unlocks the correct path, which is at the end of a fork each time. The real problem is that now you have to fora jump out of the water in time, or else you get sucked through an exit and taken back to the very beginning. Of course this means needing magic and getting the jump timing right. Each section is just another chance to mess up a jump and be forced to do it all again. The magic didn't bother me, since I drank chateau romani earlier in the cycle, but the jumps were pretty annoying.
I probably should have beaten Majora without the Fierce Deity's mask first to figure out if the fight changed any, but I wanted some catharsis, so I wrecked him hard with my magic laser sword.

I don't want to bring up the whole argument all over again but what would you say is the definitive version of the game now that you've played it through? Trying to decide whether I should just get it on Wii VC, emulate when I get a new PC or get the 3DS version.
I've been trying to catch up on all the Zelda titles. ALTTP was great. Minish Cap is alright but gets a little easy/handholdey at parts. The dungeons are a tad easy, and bosses drop like 5 million hearts when you fight them it's ridiculous. Gorgeous graphics doe

IGN has also published an interview with Aonuma.

Personally I'm a big advocate of the original.
The 3DS version changes up some crucial things in ways that I think really hurt the experience for first time players. The changes make the game easier at the cost of depth and some are intrusive in annoying ways. Most changes that don't fall into those two categories are for the worse in my mind.
What the 3DS version gives you in return are really nice looking graphics, one improved boss fight, easier menu/map use and a couple decent moments of streamlining.
So my recommendation is to buy it on the Wii VC (or emulate it if you can't for whatever reason).
-
I've been playing in small chunks, and I've gotten a little farther from the point where you restart the cycle for the first time. I kind of like the change to deku scrub's spin attack, where the hat turns into a sort of gnarly root.
Also, the bombers mention that they once accepted a non-human member into their club, and regretted it. And I think the mask man says he picked up the bomber's notebook from the Skull Kid, so it's implied that Skull Kid was part of the bomber's gang. Was this connection in the original game as well?

The latter wasn't, but I definitely remember the former.

It hurts me to say that I also think the original is more "definitive." Despite the graphic polishes, most of the improvements are very minor (cutscenes being a bit shorter, some things a bit smoother). I do like the added quest for the extra bottle, though again a rather minor addition. Plus in a game where you reset the cycle and lose all bottle contents every time, who needs 7 friggin bottles.
Unless you truly want something quite a bit easier due to the intrusive hints and save scumming, the original is probably the way to go. All 3 transformations had changes and at least 2 of them are changes to the physics engine that I find highly annoying; the 3rd is just an issue with control changes (Goron). After all this time it still feels unintuitive so I'm gonna go ahead and call it a worse control scheme, especially given that I sometimes want to mash B to attack and instead I'm stuck there ground pounding like a doofus.
I still have the last portion of the game to close out but I've definitely done enough to solidify these opinions. Also, according to people time flows faster in the new version than the original when slowed (like half speed instead of 1/3 speed). Dunno if it's true.
-
Smooth sailing. Beat Woodfall, that is- completed the temple, got all the fairies, and brought back the princess all before the second day began….in inverted speed, that is. Just as I was getting to the shrine, the second day began...
Anyways
-although Woodfall is the simplest temple of the game, I still like it a lot. Maybe it's just the right level to ease into, maybe it's the neat jungle aesthetic...
-correct me if I'm wrong, but the map shows you where a fairy is obtained when (after) you find it. I think this helps if you have re-enter the temple, or something. I dunno.
-like how the fairy under the bridge room has been changed to shooting down the beehive. It's not in plain sight, so it needs that extra thought.
-Now Odolwa.....uhh....no fire attack for me. In fact....it was a piece of cake. Fallen deku nuts (opposed to attack him via rising through the flower) brings him to his knees. I was feeling extra cocky, so the whole time I used Deku Link's spin attack. The eye....is still out there, and I think from a purely aesthetic sense, it makes the least sense on him. He's the most humanoid of the four bosses.
-racing the butler with the Bunny Hood is such a rushSpeaking of, a little mark for saving the great fairy is nice. But on the flip side, a note to bring the princess back AND to go the shrine? These things happen in quick succession. Is today's youth so hopped up on sugar they would forget a text box?
Guess I'll do the shooting minigames plus other stuff before heading for the mountains.
Also you can skip the Song of Soaring cutscene. +1

Thanks. It's available on club nintendo so I'll just get that. I suppose on PC I can play it with a better framerate/resolution but idk seems like a hassle.
