Channel Awesome, AVGN, and other web review shows

Todd and Phelous are the only reason I hang around TGWTG anymore. And for the rare occasion Lindsay posts something.
-
Lindsay is apparently working on a review for Animorphs. She picked up the TV show, found it deliciously awful though enjoyable. She's now reading the books and liking them a lot. Sounds like another one of her Pokemon obsessions, but unlike Pokemon, she's not contractually denied the ability to review it.
Jewario
I don't know if you know this yet, but JewWario died. I'm so sorry.
-
i know he passed away. I heard about it within hours of it becoming public. Went to a memorial last weekend, actually, at ConBravo!. His mom and wife came all the way up to Canada for it. blew my mind that they did that for us. His mom was such a sweet heart. The whole room was filled with laughter and tears. lots of tears.
but ya, so he's not around to do reviews anymore. so :(
-
Funny how I actually started watching him after his death. Wanted to know him a little better, turns out he was a really sweet guy that did a lot cool stuff. I wanted to watch him even earlier, after his Pokemon review with Suede - I'm angry I didn't, not he passed away and I'll never see his stream live etc.
-
They have fired some of the old guys apparently… but in the more minor sections.
Did they just completely shut down Blistered Thumbs?

Did they just completely shut down Blistered Thumbs?
It was shut down January. Apparently, the place was going down hill once Angry Joe left (not too sure why he did), and they had been waiting for a merge between BT and TGWTG. Unfortunately, TGWTG's web designers hardly even touch upon any effort to redo their site. In fact, it's taken them months to even consider hiring new talent.
It's just a mess over all.
-
From what I understand, the business side of TGWTG is…pretty goddamn terrible. BT fell apart, many contributors left because they were annoyed with how things were being handled, Mike Dodd was fired without even being told, the design of the site isn't kind to the lesser-known contributors, the game show they planned still isn't out after over a year of teasing it, etc. It really sounds like the people in charge have little to no idea what they're doing half of the time.
It's a good thing that there are enough likeable people on the site, because behind-the-scenes a lot of it seems like a mess.
-
Todd has started his own 'Disneycember' where instead he's going to review every movie Madonna has ever had a major role in. He's calling it: CINEMADONNA! And he starts off with Madonna's first major movie: Desperately Seeking Susan! http://blip.tv/todds-pop-song-reviews/cinemadonna-desperately-seeking-susan-7001941
The first thing I'm thinking of is A League of Their Own. I know he's going to review soon, but I absolutely love that movie. Like, really really love that movie. I don't know if most people do too. I mean, most people quote the "There's no crying in baseball" line, but I don't know if people 'love' the movie. I'm both curious and cautious on how he'll discuss the movie.
Also, really interested in his inevitable Evita review.

Wouldn't actually know, but I would assume its because Joe figured he was big enough on his own to go off on his own.

So he's also going to be doing Dick Tracy then? Right after Paw did it? Interesting.
-
Todd and Paw live close to each other. (The two of them are part of the Team NChick squad.) That's probably how he got the idea as they sometimes watch these things together.
-
Nostalgia Critic covers The Purge. The review is eh, (and its a dumb movie) but it has a brilliant cameo…
and the last couple minutes.... need to be seen.

Wait, Madonna has acted?

I didn't realize he left. Honestly he could probably do better by himself on Youtube. Blip is kind of an island with a limited viewership. Youtube is the second biggest search engine, only to Google which its attached to. Versus Blip which is really small niche and unheard of. It's only reason we know about it is because of the NCritic/AngryVideoGameNerd thing.
And this isn't the first time I heard TGWTG had bad business.

I saw this for the first time about a month or two ago. I thought it was pretty good, but…not amazing. I don't know, considering that the film was apparently based on real events, it seemed pretty goofy and cliched at times.

Agreed on both counts. Simply amazing.

No, I don't think it's 'amazing'. It's just a movie I really like. It's really cheesy and hammy while being funny, and sometimes, I enjoy that kind of thing.
-
wait. who's doing a league of their own? i love that movie.

Todd's going to review every single movie Madonna has had a major role in. A League of Their Own is going to be among them.
-
Huh. They just updated their site. Interface is still bad, but… someone got removed from near the middle, I can tell because some of the contributors shifted sides again.... Hrm Video Game Confessions and Ask That Guy are gone... which is for the best as they are NEVER updated... and fit better in Specials anyway) It was always weird having Doug content take up the entire first 6 columns.
Video Games Awesome seems to be gone, but they probably didn't get much traffic from TGWTG anyway and rarely updated there compared to their own site. Thats a shame. Anything else removed?
But there's a category for NEW GUYS from the talent search... and Diamanda Hagan and Rap Critic are now featured members with their own subsections. Well, good promotions for them I suppose.
-
But there's a category for NEW GUYS from the talent search.
Speaking of, I checked out the first of the new guys, Chris Stuckmann and….he's okay I guess. There's nothing really awful about him, but there's nothing remarkable about him either. I searched his Youtube page and apparently he mostly does current movie reviews and occasionally does editorials for nerdy topics. So yeah, doesn't look like he has much to add to the table.
-
There's apparently an ongoing google document of who has and hasn't been accepted, so we actually know like 17 people who have made it in already.
I didn't bother looking any of them up because we'll see them soon enough, but… apparently getting a couple people from Chez Apocalypse, one of the reviewers is going to be a travel reviewer apparently. Kooky. And someone named Calluna who currently has all of four videos, but I guess her audition showed variety and promise?
-
-
@Monkey:
ahaha what? Travel as in vacation spots? World travel?
Disneyland seems to be one of the things he does. So… yes.
I'm… not sure what to make of any of that.
-
Making a selfie everywhere…
Travel completed. -
So yeah, Robby, where's that Google doc you were talking about?
-
Beats me. It was mentioned on their forums, but no link provided.
Apparently the people really keeping track know where to look?
I didn't look too long or hard, I was just curious if there was an official announcement somewhere.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Found it. Thanks to TV Tropes of all things.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-Wvz6X-tvFn_wQqgQCQEShi87xXM77Ox5ITRnCLSir8/preview?sle=true
Oh hey, SF Debris is on there. Nice! Of course, I already watch his channel and he probably gets more ad revenue that way… but still!

Thank you.
Also, sorry, a bit of a misunderstanding on my part. I thought the Google doc was where you were getting those reviewers you posted, but they were actually from Chez Apocalypse, right?

Ooh! Folding Ideas joined too.
-
Doug posted on his facebook essentially confirming Studio Ghibli films are going to be this year's "Disneycember".
-
Nice! That's a pretty relevant announcement. I can't wait to see what he thinks of The Cat Returns. That movie is so weird I don't know if it's good or bad.
-

it's good. Very Alice in Wonderlandey.
It's mostly weird in that its a "prequel" and simultaneous "sequel" to Whisper of the Heart which has nothing to do with it at all.
-
how is it a prequiel and a sequel
-
how is it a prequiel and a sequel
The movie was made second, after Whisper of the Heart. However its entirely in the fictional world and has no real connections to the first movie. It stars the Baron when he was much younger, so it's a "prequel"… but it also features references to things that happened in WotH, like the cat.
So I always just figured in the meta that its the novel Shizuku eventually wrote when she grew up (sequel) but the story is actually set before the story she told in that one (prequel.) It's weird..
-
ah. ya. you're right.
-
Oh wow, Rantasmo got in TGWTG? Neat.
-
Ghiblicember? Neat. I only recently finished watching all the Ghibli-films that are available outside of Japan, because I wanted to be able to say that I had seen every single Ghibli-movie ever… Sadly, since When Marnie Was There has since come out in Japan I can now no longer say that, but hey, for about a week or so, I had indeed seen every single movie Ghibli has released!
Curious as to what he'll have to say on Pom Poko. I mean, I know I'm not alone in finding that movie really, really, really, really and so on... bad, but I also know there are a lot of people who genuinely like it, so I'm interested to see which side of that split Doug is on.
-
This post is deleted!
-
he'll have fun with it, no doubt, but i can't see him liking it. I think you really gotta be into japanese culture to like that one. I even find it dull.

Spoony returns with a classic: Big trouble in Little China - for the Commodore 64!
http://spoonyexperiment.com/game-reviews/big-trouble-in-little-china-commodore-64/
C64 was my first home computer. Pretty soon afterwards we got a NES, which became my favourite, but I still have memories of awful load times and our cassette drive that never seemed to work right. My friend had a floppy drive which I envied a lot, loaded up games like Law of the West in a snap of the fingers.

I also had a floppy one. Damn, I loved my Amiga like no boy has ever loved a woman. The amount of Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder or Super Frog I played on it was insane. INSANE I TELL YOU!
-
Oh yeah, one of my friends had an Amiga 500 too. Our go-to games were Sensible Soccer, Cannon Fodder, Settlers, Mortal Kombat and Moonstone (dat damn dragon).

This week Nostalgia Critic reviews Small Soldiers.
-
@Senshi:
This week Nostalgia Critic reviews Small Soldiers.
I was really hoping he'd review this some day, as it was one of my favorite movies growing up (though, yes, I acknowledge that it's kinda sucky)
! And he's finally going to review Princess Diaries II
-
Lindsay/Nostalgia Chick made a really nice and long article about Robin Williams, JewWario, and the struggles of depression.
http://namebrandlindsay.com/2014/08/12/why-some-peoples-minds-try-to-kill-them/
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
YOU GUYS! Paw and Elisa are having their baby right now! TGWTG is getting a new baby!
-
Doug talks about Robin Williams.
-
Heads up for those who like the NC Editorials: Doug's posting them a day early on http://www.maker.tv/maker/nostalgiacritic.

Todd covers a One Hit Wonder that's been having a lot of buzz lately due to a certain popular film. It's One Hit Wonderland with "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Swede.
http://blip.tv/todds-pop-song-reviews/one-hit-wonderland-hooked-on-a-feeling-by-blue-swede-7013342
For those who don't follow Todd on Twitter, not only did Todd love GotG, he now ADORES Groot.
In terms of the review, I still like Blue Swede's version, but honestly, I love the song in general.
-

I too prefer the Blue Swede version of Hooked on a Feeling… however... it is not the ONLY version... I can't watch the review right now because of where I am, but If he doesn't already talk about this in the review... then.... Here...
I am not a user of recreational drugs. I've never even smoked a cigarette. However, I feel this video accurately simulates the feeling commonly referred to as "Totally Tripping Balls".
-
Pfft, if you're gonna link the Hasselhoff version, you could at least post the literal version.
-
Anybody excited for Linkara's HOPR video coming today?
