Oh also Megaman and Bass if you can find the GBA cart for 2.99 in a random Gamestop ;)
What are you Playing?

-
Granted I only played maybe an hour of Other M, but it just felt… pretty clunky? I guess everything worked, but only worked and nothing special beyond that which made the scheme good
Of course I'm really just here waiting for Mugen to come in and say how the gameplay was great and then Cyan to come here to post Character Assassination: Authorized

That I can add. :D

Yeah, the Adam aspect, and overall how much they ruined Samus' character is often what I see cited as reasons not to play Other M. The few people I've asked who actually played it, I think Mugen being one of them, told me the gameplay was solid.
sums up exactly the problem I've been told the game has.
Basically,Also, any Fire Emblem players can look over my FE list as well? That's the series I've had the most head scratching over what to play and where to start.
-
@CCC:
Somehow missed this!
But yeah, agreed. That was the one detail they kind of dropped the ball on, which stands in stark contrast to how beautifully everything else connected/wrapped up.
No worries. I looked online after finishing and yeah it's implied.
! There is a screenshot of a note that says "I'm coming to you, Yomiel" or something like that.
-
Just played through Bayonetta again (I found it a lot easier to follow the story the second time around, and I feel like I got through the game a lot faster too), and I'm currently playing Xenoblade Chronicles. While I don't quite have the combat down (some of the unique enemies that are the same level as me, like Reckless Godwin, are decimating my team since they do ludicrous amounts of damage per hit), I've gotten to Makna Forest and I think I'm going to get a new character soon.
-
August was Mother month for me with completion of Earthbound and Mother 3.
Now September enters and I'm going into Paper Mario mode. Starting with Thousand Year Door tonight since it's the one I haven't played in so long. Original one will probably follow, ideally with me finishing by the time Smash is out.
-
@CCC:
Consider removing 8…
Why would you remove the MM game with the best soundtrack
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
For real though MM8's reputation comes from a different time when players were a lot less open minded about what constituted a good game. Keep in mind that in this time period, 30 year old critics would unironically call games like MM8 kiddy and dismiss them, along with a lot of other stuff, and so did players. That's seriously where it's rep came from.
Games like MM6 and MM7 were really samey in a franchise that had for a while already been pretty samey, and the eighth game at least really brought along some really fresh elements in comparison and it's charming
Mega Man 8 is BASICALLY the Kirby version of like early MM's Mario. It's not hard and you can beat it in six hours maybe blind, but it has really great visuals and presentation (it is cute as heck, endlessly cute as heck) and the music is just wonderful. Just really wonderful. The world breathes life in a way no Mega Man game before it tried to do? I have glowing opinions on it honestly. It's just not a long play and there's not a lot of challenge outside of "vehicle" segments, but skipping it is no good
-
I honestly just didn't enjoy it, and I can't put my finger on any superficial reason for that.
6 is one of my favorites (great music too), 7 is mehhh but I can deal with it, but 8 just couldn't hold my interest, and it had nothing to do with the kiddy factor (MM&B has similar visuals/SFX/enemies/2-whole-bosses and I've played that one to hell and back). Maybe something about the stage design? Lackluster subweapons?
Incidentally I didn't find it easy at all. Vehicle sections were fine, but soccer ball Wily 1 boss stonewalled me for the longest time.I'll give you Frost Man's theme, Grenade Man's theme, the Intro Stage theme, and the stage select theme, though. Those are awesome.
Actually had Grenade Man's theme stuck in my head the other day and it took several hours of youtubing to figure out what it was. Didn't help that I was wrongly convinced it had to be from the X series… -
I wasn't accusing you specifically of calling it kiddy. Just that in 2000, that was still somehow hilariously rampant criticism (i love reading reviews of games like Gimmick! Where cute visuals meant the reviewers played one stage and wrote it off.)
Was it Windwaker's release that finally started to curb that sentiment? GAME DUDES were so obsessed with trying to get games taken seriously for all the wrong reasons
But yeah MM8 has a really bad english reputation, idk if you know. This was around the time X was more enjoyed as a series and everyone WANTED original series mega man to die, for context
Mega Man &Bass was so good though yeah
-
Welp, I am now in possession of 2500 free Wii points to use as I see fit, so, I think I can now add Megaman 9 and 10 to my list like CCC recommended!
-
Just finished the first trial in Super Danganronpa 2 and the new tweaks the class trial really threw me the hell off. The first execution though was really confusing and excessive.
-
Finished Devil May Cry 2 with both characters. The game is really easy compared to its predecessor and successors. Something that really bugged me were the bosses. They didn't have any personality at all (except Arius and Trismagia), they were just there and there were way too many bosses in the game. And Dante's quiet personality really annoyed me, too. And why did he fool people with his rigged coin? The story wasn't that interesting either. Lucia was bland as fuck and her backstory was clichéd. The last boss in Dante's story line was the only real challenge to me. But I don't understand why Griffon was part of his blob form, he didn't even appear as a boss in the game. Most of the bosses were easy as hell and the Devil Trigger was overpowered. Overall it's the weakest part of the Devil May Cry series but it was enjoyable. I don't think I'll try to unlock Trish, I don't want to get through that again.
-
Started Playstation All Star Battle Royale since it is on PS+.
It is OK I guess but by far no Smash Bros.Totally better when playing with friends offline though.
-
Yeah I tried it too, but it is kinda bland. Love the intro though.
-
Yeah Playstation All stars isn't great and is pretty sparse in terms of content, but I've managed to have some fun with it. Playing as Sly and staying invisible for the entire match blindsiding everyone is pretty fun. I like what they did with the stages as well.
Making my way through Dark Souls and my only sentiment is fuck the Tomb of the Giants.
-
Making my way through Dark Souls and my only sentiment is fuck the Tomb of the Giants.
Arguably the most intimidating location on your first playthrough… Until you realize you can run past most of the skeledogs, because seriously fuck fighting those things :D
-
I just got my copy of Deus Ex: Human Revolution: Director's Cut in the mail from Best Buy (which I got for $16), so I'll be playing that for as long as it takes me to complete it. I've only ever played the original Deus Ex on PC, but I hear the sequels for it were terrible, so that's no big loss. I remember this game got me quite hyped back when it was announced for non-Nintendo systems, so it's great that I'm finally going to be able to play it, and on my Wii U, no less!
-
Finally finished up Super Danganronpa 2 and the last case was a damn mindfuck on (top of some more mindfucks). Really having a tough time figuring out whether to go trophy hunting or go back to Akiba's Trip or Persona 3.

Caved and with some push from a friend(Holy), I played a Touhou game. The 7th one. The graphics, scoring system, "ship" functions and stages aren't anywhere near as good as Crimzon Clover's… But the music and bullet bullet patterns are really good. Hard to say which game is harder tho. Both are really nuts, but for completely different reasons. Touhou is more like a real time puzzle game with alot of focus on weaving through mazes and figuring out how to avoid being hit. Crimzon Clover is the same in that right, but puzzle in figuring out stuff comes with how you choose to destroy enemies or bosses with the wider amount of combat options you are given(even tho it isn't complex).
So yeah. My second shmup. I expect my third one to be played either tommorow or over the weekend. Playism is releasing "Revolver 360 Re:Actor" then. It looks fun.

Haven't I been telling you to play that game serie a while ago?
Regardless, you should try the rest of the serie (6-14.5 I think) due to having unique quirks in the gameplay and bosses that make each one fairly unique. 8 (Imperishable Night) is the best one hands down though for best gameplay, music*, and bosses. It's unfortunate that none of its predecessors got close to how great 8 was but the rest are a ton of fun as well. Did you try your hand with the extra stage/boss as well?
PS: The music in 8 is freaking amazing. Lunatic Princess is probably the best track Zun has come up with so far.

I saw you mention it when I talked about getting into bullet hells earlier… but.
I was kind of ignoring shumups that featured flying anime characters since they didn't seem as interesting seeing a variety of spaceships, robots, ground units, insectiods/whatevers. I just didn't really see the appeal and I needed ALOT of convincing before caving in on it, hahah!
But yeah. It's a fun game. Not sure which one I'd try next tho. I'm really wanting to try clearing the 7th game on Hard or Normal Mode(or Easy). The fan favorites seem to vary a whole lot. Some seem to suggest purely on aesthetics, but... If I can just download the sountracks(downloaded them from 1-10 actually) and watch someone else play it... then, I'd need more of a reason to actually play the game myself. So Gameplay > stuff than anything else.
Not sure what's my favorite track so far tho. The first 6 games were sort of painful to listen to since they mostly sounded the same. The newer ones(6-10) has that sameness feeling too, but it's a tiny less evident. I have a spot for "Septette of the Dead Princess" tho. "Phantom Ensemble" I like solely because the boss fight is really great!
Lunatic Priness is "Lunatic Eyes", right? I don't see princess in the tracklist. If it is, It sounds alot like "Doll Maker of Becuresti"(I really like the boss here too) or another song I heard in 7... Maybe it's de-javu or that sameness I was talking about, hahah!

Ahhh….1-5 are KINDA dated so I wouldn't recommend trying them unless you're curious how they are like (I think they also require an emulator too rather than simply just running an executable). 6-7 are pretty simple and straight forward while I believe 8 introduces new variability such as swapping boss characters for stage 4 (which becomes a staple for most of the later games UNTIL 10 or 11).
Also 8 is great in that it has a unique gimmick where you have to accomplish a few things in order to face the final boss (so in essence there are 2 final bosses with the true final boss being...oddly easier for some reason). I believe you have to collect a certain amount of "time orbs" in order to have enough time to face the final boss. There is also Spell Card mode in the select screen so you can go back and replay certain boss spell cards. 8 Also has a partner system which you swap between human and youkai characters for collecting the time orbs. However, you can also unlock individual character mode. So overall, 8 has a lot more replayability to it compared to a few other titles.
On the other hand 9 is a really bizzarre one where you face off against a CPU for points or something. It's really odd, but still a lot of fun due to the unlockables. Other than that 10-14 are pretty straight forward with each individual quirks per game (10 having the faith system, 11 having satellites or something, 12 with ufos, 13's trance gauge, and...haven't played 14 yet). Not to mention the 4 spin offs (not fighting game ones) which are basically boss battle runs but with quirks (taking pictures, freezing them, or I think stealing objects).
The song in question earlier was :
Not a complex song, but I think it is a perfect song in terms of character "themes". The latter songs (I think 10+) have a bit more complexity to them.

Making some way through my Retro Game list. On Metroid II right now.
I've got about 22 Metroids to go and just got the Spazer Beam.
After playing Metroid Zero Mission… I gotta say... it's hard going back to the 8-bit Metroid games. Metroid II is far better than Metroid 1, but still.... why no Map?...
It's a good game regardless, even if I have to have a Map pulled up on my computer while I play lol. -
Agreed about the lack of map in 2…
1 was revolutionary in all sorts of ways so we can kind of forgive it, but I hope that the eventual remake that 2 deserves will finally fix that glaring omission (and hopefully get rid of some of the sameiness of areas)....I just started Journey after finally caving to all the hype/praise. Honestly not what I was expecting. Have to play through more before forming a proper judgment.
-
I've been playing Xenoblade Chronicles and making an effort to actually dedicate some time out of each week to actually finish it, as I never seem to finish an RPG in a timely manner. It's been a lot of fun, and the combat is great once you get the hang of it which takes hardly any time at all.
As far as progress goes, I'm practically done with the beginning, where! the Mechon attacked Colony 9 and Fiora died.
Now I'm having a hard time focusing on homework when all I want to do now is play Xenoblade.
-
Just bought the Devil May Cry HD Collection. I've never played any games in this series, but by my understanding, they're supposed to be good, and $15 for three games is a great deal.
-
I've now beaten Megaman 3. I have to say, it was really good. Got somewhat frustrating in areas, but no more frustrating than Mega Man 2. It's not Mega Man 1 Levels of horrifying by any means. The Yellow Devil fight in this one was LEAGUES better than in the first game. Having the eye open longer so you can hit it more and having the pieces jiggle a little before flying off so you can plan alone made the fight so much easier.
Also, I've got about 16 More Metroids to kill in Metroid 2, so I'm still truckin' on through. Should finish it shortly, may finish it tonight.
Not sure what to play next. I think I want a tiny little Mega Man break, but I don't know if I want a Metroid break as well… My options are one of the following:
Punch Out!
Kirby's Dream Land
Mother
Fire Emblem: Monshō no Nazo
Or just move onto Super Metroiddecisions... decisions...
-
Kirby's Dream Land is like an hour long so you may as well play it first
-
^ Can't argue with that logic, Kirby's Dream Land it is!
Also, should I play Kirby's Adventure or Nightmare in Dreamland after it? I've been told Nightmare in Dreamland is a pretty faithful remake…
-

I'd get Adventure. From what I remember they're pretty similar, but Nightmare removed a few rooms, and made the Meta knight fight a joke.
There's also less room during boss fights in Nightmare, because a lot of enemy sprites are super sized for some reason. It's kinda annoying.
Personally Kirby feels too slippery or something too.
-
Beat Metroid II, then Beat Kirby's Dreamland. You were right, it WAS exceedingly short.
Playing Mother right now. Just got Ana in my party and am headed back to Magicant to equip her well and level her up.
-
Just bought RE: Revelations HD on PS3.
3DS one was fun as hell, and this somehow manages to be even better. Raid mode is such a simple concept, but it's so satisfying. -
Just got to the base of The Mountain in Mother. Just had the scene where the Robot destroys me and Lloyd shows up to save the day with that tank…
Now I have to trudge back up the Mountain... this is gonna be hard isn't it?
-
Mt. Itoi was notorious for never being playtested or balanced so good luck with that one.
-
I got a tad confused with the terminology for a second… The internet calls this "Mt. Itoi" and so the Map and stuff I'm looking at Says that, and that's stuck in my head as it's name by now because of this... but the game calls it "Holy Loly Mountain". This seems to be a name change situation with the "Earthbound Zero" Prototype, and I'm playing Mato's translation patch for the GBA version, so I understand why there's a difference but it's still got me turned around lol.
I'm playing Mato's translated patch specifically because I read online that he included an "Easy Ring" that doubles the Exp and money dropped by enemies to make the game less of a grindfest... and it's been working. Aside from some light leveling in Magicant I did to Lloyd, Ana, and Teddy when I first got them, I haven't been in a situation where I've HAD to grind to win. For example upon getting to the mountain I'd not died once yet... Then I got there... First battle on the mountain plateau was against a pair of Titanians... and they wrecked me... first they petrified Ninten, and confused Ana... then after one round they confused Teddy too... I then wasn't able to do an input, I just had to watch as it killed Ninten and Ana.... at the LAST minute, Teddy snapped out of the confusion and I ran, then I cut and teleported to Magicant to recoup...
Suffice to say, I know I'm in for a bit of a slog now...
-
I started playing Bravely Default today <3 Really dig it so far!
-
I bought Metroid yesterday and I don't know what I need to do. I've found the Missiles and an Energy Tank but I don't know where I need to go.
-

The Original 8-Bit Metroid doesn't have a Map, which is really bad IMO since the game does little to tell you what you need to do or where you need to go first. You're supposed to explore and find your way.
What you want to do is make your way down Brinstar and defeat both Kraid and Ridley in their hideouts. You're supposed to collect any and all powerups you can on the way. You definitely need the Ice Beam and the Varia suit, I suggest going for Kraid first, then going back up, get the Varia Suit, then trudge down Norfair and go after Ridley.
You are going to need a TON of Energy Tanks and Missiles for the boss fights, ESPECIALLY Mother Brain at the end. Collect as many of those as you can too. -

Alright, thanks for the heads up. Damn, there are a lot of energy tanks.
There are 8 total if you count the one you start the game with, and you will need each and every one of them if you expect to be able to beat Mother Brain in the end.
That fight is ridiculously hard. -
Finished Persona 1. I wouldn't say it's a bad game, but it didn't really feel like that good of a game? Of course, first entry to the spinoff series, so there'll always be some rough edges to work around I guess. Fairly generic story with some pretty cliched dialogue everywhere, but that's whatever I guess. Guess I'll move onto Persona 2 now.

Oh wow you made it through that one, I couldn't, game is too old I just got annoyed by all the little things that didn't go fast.
And yeah because the story wasn't that great it couldn't pull me through all that unlike P2. -

And yeah because the story wasn't that great it couldn't pull me through all that unlike P2.Yeah, I've been playing it on the PSP, so I've just been setting up assured kills for enemies and setting it to repeat because it takes so damn long to get through it. Then I just ended up grinding up so the MC could use his ultimate persona (seriously a huge chore and while his ultimate attack was worth it, the others definitely were wayyyy too much effort for too little gain. Hell I got Brown's ultimate because his was lowest and his maxed out attack is… pretty awful. Strong physical damage by sacrificing yourself? Pfffft.
Persona 1/10 (the move itself)
-
Just finished Mother 1.
I'll say that my opinion of it is not far off from Purple Hermit's opinion of Persona 1. I liked it, it was a fun little game, but it had a LOT of rough edges and I'd not recommend it to anyone outside of people who genuinely just want to play this series. I will say, it was easily the shortest JRPG I've ever played, which is good.
I assume Mother 2 (Earthbound) and 3 both have all of the rough edges cleaned up and are way better games? They are VERY Well loved, so I have to assume that's the case.

Mother 2 and 3 are indeed far superior in every way. If you enjoyed mother 1, I see no reason why you'd dislike the next 2. Mother 1 is nice and all, but FAR too frustrating sometimes.

Really excited to get FIFA 15 today, woo!

You'll see some very familiar character designs (the three mains are pretty much carbon copies) in Mother 2, so there's that. But the battle system is waaaayyyy better because enemy encounters are determined by on screen contact with enemies. The counter in Mother 2 moves kinda too fast to do anything of merit early on but later when you're fighting enemies that dole out a crap ton of damage, it gets pretty useful to heal while you're dying.
I don't remember finishing Mother but I do remember getting fairly far, and the story is kinda quirky but inhibited by the platform it was on. Mother 2 gets hella quirky hella fast and it's super great in terms of its style and jokes, and really it reminds me a lot of just kids going around playing a game of save the world with magic powers, so to me I kinda flip flop between Mother 2 or Mother 3 being better depending on my mood and how much I value style at the time because Mother 3 tones down the quirkiness a bit for a much stronger, much more impactful storyline.
-
Flower.
Can't believe how beautiful it is and how charming.
I really don't know why I haven't played it by now. -
So far, the mechanics in Persona 2 are fairly improved with a lot of fun add ons like fusion spells and
collective bargainingTeam contact with demons, and the plot's a lot more intriguing with the rumors, but I might be going through things too fast but I often seem to find myself getting lost or not knowing exactly where to go. It was a problem in Persona 1 but having no map in general pointing where rooms or what you're looking for are in high schools and stuff is kinda ehhh. I also think that the number of tarot cards you need to create personas is waaayyyy too high given how long it can take to negotiate with a demon and how hit or miss the contact stuff is for that unless you're using a guide. Also the game is way slower because pretty much anything that involves a transition has a considerable amount of loading time which reeeaaally kills any momentum along, and in particular it really makes battles/contact a huge drag. I kinda don't really want to go through two of these games, but I guess I'll just keep the commitment and get through'em.
-
Gaucamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition. Definitely prettier. Kind of annoyed there's no "Hey you bought and beat this already, here's hard mode." thing. I'm surprised at how well they were able to shove two levels into the game without screwing up the pacing or narrative. Still have trouble seeing what shield colors are what though…
