Yeesh. First of all, sorry for making another Usopp thread CosmicDebris. :P I'm just caught up with all the excitement! No harm intended!
And Aldrich: Usopp can be weird and strong. And by strong he just needs confidence in himself and his abilities. I also agree that he should be there for his nakamas. He's the sniper and inventor of the crew. He's had trouble trying to figure out his role and has long-running image problems. Now is the time for him to become self-actualized and return to his nakamas!
He can be strong and not be a melee fighter like Zoro, Sanji or Luffy. Just as Zoro kicks ass with swords, so Usopp will kick ass with his guns. It's about self-respect and mutual respect. :)
Chapter 414 "Sanji vs Jabura" Discussion

He can be strong and not be a melee fighter like Zoro, Sanji or Luffy. Just as Zoro kicks ass with swords, so Usopp will kick ass with his guns.I like your way of thinking, Leaf Cable. That's what I want to see.
Notice however, that many here assume that, since Usopp is good with ranged weapons, his battles must be against ranged enemies. I disagree. He should have melee opponents too, since the greatest battle for a ranged fighter is to keep the opponent away (specially when the enemy can withstand shots). FIght melee fighters with Ranged weapons by using tricks to keep them at a distance is just the kind of challenge that Usopp should have sometimes.
-
Hmm I just had the crazy idea of Usopp shooting Franky right on Spandam's head when he's about to cross the Gate of Justice. Kabuto is a big weapon, so, why not shooting people instead of bullets ? It would be like Sanji's "Armée de l'air" but a lot better.
and if they do that, franky won't have to cross the luffy vs lucci battlefield. -
Usopp getting a place back in the crew after beating Jabura would have made Usopp right, making Luffy an ass of a captain, just like Bellamy, as someone else said.
-
Thanks Deicide! And I would have no problems with Usopp fighting against melee opponents. It will change things up for our great Sogeking! I'd like to see him pull a Lucky Roux and blast someone's face off! >:)
For that matter, IMHO, I would love for Usopp to actually start using guns more often. Not that his slingshots are bad, and Kabuto is a neat weapon, it's just that I feel guns would make Usopp a lot more intimidating! Guns and the Dials: damn, that would be a deadly combination! Who messes with a crazy nerd armed to the teeth with a dangerous firearm? XD
And since Usopp is an inventor, it would be really kickass to seem creating upgrades for Franky! See, Usopp can be deadly too! -
Do you wanna know what I want to see now?
Spandam beats Franky by surprising him with Funkfreed. Franky tries to counterattack but Spandam uses dirty tricks to make Franky helpless. Spandam think about killing Franky but decides to not take chances and go with Robin to the Gate of Justice.
As Spandam is about to cross the gate, a huge Firebird Star hits him. We see Usopp on the top of Justice Tower (far far away). Spandam takes cover, bringing Robin with him. Then Usopp fires some dial (string dial? maybe Nami creates a cloud and Usopp fires a Milky Way Dial?) and uses the path created by his shot to arrive. Spandam vs. Sogeking begins.
-
I actually do want Usopp against Spandam, but I see his big plan being something else. Since he knows nothing about Spandam and it'd be clever, showing there's more than just fighting.

@refii2:
Quite honestly, you sound like Bellamy. Everything Luffy our Captain, my captain and yours has been preaching has gone over your head. This isn't the age of the strong where the strong will have the power and decide the future. Luffy needs to protect and keep his Nakama together, just as he cannot navigate or cook or use a cannon.
IMHO, you're mistaking the idea of "survival of the fittest" with the ideal of wanting to make oneself stronger, of wanting to improve oneself. While the former is a questionable idea (when applied to human beings), and one that IMHO should be fought against, the latter is an ideal I feel all people should strive for. Pursuing the ideal of making oneself stronger (not just in physical or athletic strength, btw), of improving oneself, IMHO, is the way we as human beings are able to shine as human beings.

Its also a complete fabrication. Darwin never used the phrase survival of the fittest (as far as I know). It was a term coined by someone else to sum up his work, and to make it more accessible an idea to the public. Its bollocks.
A much more apt summarisation would be "survival of those most fitting the enviroment". It just doesn't sound as catchy.
Yea, its completely off topic, but I've been doing some reading about evolutionary history in my spare time lately, and well, a little knowledge never killed anyone.
! Also, I'm probably off the mark a bit on this somewhat myself, and someone much more knowledgable about the subject will correct me, and thus the circle of nerd rage will continue
! The Circle of Nerd Rage is such a beautiful thing, and it can achieve so, so very much (re: nothing) sniff
! /me wipes tear away from eye :happy:EDIT: To get this post somewhat on topic.
I've just moved into a new house and have no internets yet, and can only get it in work, which has heavily restricted pc's, but lots of free time. Does anyone have a link for this chapter up on MSN or something that wouldn't require having winzip, or one of its ilk to read?
-
Good job, SonofBattles.
-
GOOOOOOO Sanji!!! I'm pretty sure the next issue will feature zoro and a little bit of luffy :(
-
Thanks for the chap.
Well no surprise, this chap has no interest for me. I'll have to wait 3 weeks to have something worth a look again I think, though it won't stop me from checking out every chapter, you're a fanboy or you're not.
Just a off topic question, do you think the Enies Lobby arc/CP9 fights could be over before we reach August?
I'm afraid I've got to agree with you there.
-
I have to admit the one-on-one combat aspect in One Piece is usually something I enjoy more in the anime version.
Usopp getting a place back in the crew after beating Jabura would have made Usopp right, making Luffy an ass of a captain, just like Bellamy, as someone else said.
Can you elaborate on that? I'm not quite sure what you mean. Usopp right about what makes Luffy an ass of an captain?
-
At first I thought they'd last until maybe December, whih is terrifyingly long. I expect the fights to end mid August, and the arc to end sometime in October.
Cosmic: about Usopp being too weak. He was pissed because he thought Luffy abandoned the weak, so proving his strength won't really solve anything. It wouldn't really make Luffy an ass, but it could seem sketchy.
-
Ok, I understand what you're saying now. And that is right.
-
It covered alot in 18 pages.
I'll second that.
I started to get pissed when it went to showing (wasting) time on everybody's situation but when it actually ended up progressing a significant amount I ended up being surprised that there was actually MORE to it.
-
I think the battles will be over by Chapter 425.
So, at least 10 weeks still.Oh, yeah, I forgot to repeat my theory from the spoiler thread here!!!
Well, here it comes:
I think next chapter is "Zoro vs. Kaku", focusing on their battle.
Then in chapter 416 both battles clash (though they do not exchange opponents).
And finally both end in chapter 417, with a 2-page spread with a double KO of both Kaku and Jabura.2-page spread… Double KO... with a DON! drools
Of course, I had this theory in the spoiler thread, so it was before seeing that Jabura and Sanji were out of the wolf room by the end of chapter 414, so this may not happen. But I still hope for it!
-
This chapter managed to cover up all Sanji and Usopp situations perfectly. It was so convenient I would call it Deus ex Machina, except by very definition it was too well constructed to be that. Dammit, Oda! You never cease to impress! The whole Sanji/Usopp situation was actually so good I hardly even cared about the fight - and Sanji's fights are my favorites!
In retrospect, for Usopp to be Jyabura would prove nothing and make absolutely no sense. If Jyabura's strength is merely a tiiiiny tiiiiny amount lower than Kaku's, and Kaku is fighting Zoro, that would make Usopp a top-teir fighter. Usopp's goal is to be a brave (EMPHASIS ON BRAVE) warrior of the sea. Great lesson to teach the kiddies, folks - only the strong and superhuman can be brave. Sanji was built for fighting. Zoro was built for fighting. Luffy was built for fighting. Usopp was not, but he tried to be. The lesson here is to be comfortable with who you are - Usopp can do something Sanji can't, and that even Sogeking can't. Something that only an Usopp can do. And when he realizes that he isn't the best fighter, or the best ship repairman, or anything like that, and he is comfortable with that fact, is the day that Usopp sees himself as being useful again. It's the day that he sees you don't need to be strong to be brave or useful. And the fact that he couldn't repair Merry was not his fault, because that's not (to alter a quote by a very wise stuffed animal) "what [Usopps] do best."
As for what will Usopp do? No idea. And I'd rather not guess, because all I know is this: If Oda could fit together a speech like that to state what we were all thinking knowing we would be thinking it, to assure us in this fashion, shows me that Oda loves all of his characters equally and he would never shortchange one.
Also, I agree with Aldrich that Usopp fighting Spandam proves absolute shit. Why couldn't Sanji do that? Usopp needs to do something better than everyone else right now, something that he does best to show that although he may not be able to fight 1-on-1 or repair a ship as good as anyone else, he sure as hell can (insert whatever he does here). And I also agree with Aldrich on his less-popular point - Until Usopp does this incredible act, there has been no development. I say this only because we cannot be assured that this situation will end perfectly - I am as sure as I can be that Oda will do it fantastically, but I can never be 100% sure. Should Usopp fight Spandam after Sanji's speech, everything Sanji pointed out, the ONLY points stated by anyone in the course of this arc that have made Usopp believe in himself, will be false. Which means Usopp should not be able to believe in himself in this case, and if he does Oda just made Usopp's development about as interesting, useful, and making about as much sense as a painting of mud painted entirely with feces on a brown canvas. And it would smell about as bad, too.
-
I don't see the arc endding after the fights end. Oda's been improving with the storytelling. Notice in Skypiea that after Luffy beat Eneru, there was still more. _. I guess we're just so use to beating the last boss, and expecting everything to fix itself cause of that. It's quite possible for Luffy to beat Lucci, and keep on moving for a while more… There's tons more stuff to see this arc. With Luffy's fight being so early in it, I'm just expecting a lot more stuff after this lil fight they're having. Oda won't disappoint though. So I'm not even gonna bother trying to make sense outta what could happen. I just wanted to put it out there that there's another view to all of this...
Btw, I just gotta ask: How on earth do I pronounce "Lucci"? Every time I try, I get a girls name. haha._
-
lpzie, its pronounced "loo-chi"

Cosmic: about Usopp being too weak. He was pissed because he thought Luffy abandoned the weak, so proving his strength won't really solve anything. It wouldn't really make Luffy an ass, but it could seem sketchy.
I don't think Usopp actually believes that Luffy abandons the weak. I believe it was just something that was said in the heat of the moment, that he really didn't mean. Or did you miss the part about him telling Robin that he should have faith in the captain and trust him? If anything, that statement says more about his psyche at the time, than what he thought of Luffy. That he saw himself as weak, and as a burden to the crew, and should be abandoned. While this situation has parallels to Robin's situation with not wanting to be a burden to the crew, the difference there is that Robin didn't have complete trust in the captain and was afraid of being abandoned sooner or later, once the burden to the crew became too great. But as you know, the Strawhats don't do that. Weak, strong, it doesn't matter. They stick with that crewmate, and will help/protect that crewmate no matter what.
Whereas in Usopp's situation, his feelings of being a burden stems from not feeling like a team player, not finding his role in the crew. And because he felt like a burden, and felt like he had no place in the crew, he lost his pride. So it's all a matter of his pride, really. And since Usopp's dream is to become a brave warrior of the sea, which has a great deal to do with pride, IMHO, Usopp's pride plays an important role in his character. If Usopp loses his pride, then you could almost say Usopp loses his dream as well. Once a Strawhat loses his/her dream, then he/she really loses the most important reason to travel with the Strawhats in the first place, and that is to seek and fulfill one's dreams. Afterall, the Strawhats you could say are nothing more than a very close knit group of dream seekers. So in order to rejoin the Strawhats, Usopp really needs to find his pride again. In essence, he needs to find his dream again.

Usopp v Sanji fans, and now Usopp v Usopp fans! :DDDD who will be the winner??
Warning: THIS IS A [poorly written] RANTTo throw in my .02~ I agree with Aldrich in a sense. In my honest opinion, I've felt that all the inner turmoil Usopp has suffered over the past 100 chapters was building towards a shining moment when he becomes totally and utterly victorious against a notable opponent. More or less everything that has happened has been because of his 'weakness.' In reality, out of all the strawhats, the one who has shown the the least of his/her specific power is Usopp. (Zoro: swords, Sanji: feet, etc. If you weigh the effectiveness of Zoro's swords againts getting hit by a boshi, then you have to agree that Zoro is stronger.) Let's face it: Usopp's talent (Sniping) has the potential to be as great as that of Zoro's and Sanji's. What is sniping, if not shooting one-hit KOs? The problem I see though is that Usopp has been fighting as a melee fighter. If he had a gun that would be fine, but he doesn't (Not that I want him to have one). I don't think Usopp stood a chance against Jabura (or however the hell you spell it), not because he was so strong, but rather because he was in a confined area with little to no coverage. In all his fights previously, there has been alot of space and coverage.
To get to my point, I agree with Aldrich because, well, I am upset. Now, I didn't really excpect Usopp to fight Jabura, but my hopes did get raised, and the result was .. less than expected.
Now when I think about the instance where he took out two Marine ships with the cannon, and the Daddy the Father incident, I do think Usopp has alot more fighting potential than what he's been showing. I'm just getting frustrated having to wait for it.
This is probably the last that I'll vent about it though, and I'm going to wait to see what Oda does.
Btw, I just gotta ask: How on earth do I pronounce "Lucci"? Every time I try, I get a girls name. haha.

Wait…what?? You must have either typoed or be making some obscure joke, I can't believe anyone would say that seriously.

Me! I'm always the winner.

Haha, I remember that. It's misleading though, because it's pronounced Loochie. Easy way to remember: Think Capuccino. ;)

Such an excellent chapter! The splitscreen shot of Usopp/Sogeking makes me believe that Oda been influenced by Spiderman a bit (the shot of him outside Robin's window on the sea train also resembled a Spiderman scene)
Curiosity beckons. The spoiler mentioned a popularity poll next week. Popularity of what I'm wondering. The below image might give the details. Anyone willing to translate the very bottom bit that has Luffy?

Sorry, couldn't resist, even though it's not finished yet.D

Cosmic, that is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Litteraly.

It's a character poll that Shounen Jump eventually does, counting votes from the readers.

That would be naturally assumed except One Piece has only had one of those and that was way back before the volumes were in the double digits. I think I recall that Oda said he didn't want character polls (though I'm possibly wrong). Obviously, to have one pop up after so many years makes me a bit skeptical so I'd like confirmation from a translator
-
Thanks for the chapter!
I'm horribly embarassed to ask this, but do we have a translation yet? It seems like we do, but I can't find it anywhere. I feel like an idiot :(
-
Try the translations sub forum.

Actually we got one right after Alabasta, vol. 24 IIRC. Don't know about any other after that, though.
-
there's a subforum for translations now? that makes it difficult :/ but thanks!
-
It makes it easier, because now all you have to do is look for the thread there instead of searching through the chapter thread. ;)
ps - thanks Octogon. ^^

For a counter, you would have been better off with Usopp confessing to Franky that he knew the ship was done for.
My point was that being strong for the crew wouldn't do anything. So I agree, but we're on different pages.

Sogeking seems to know what he needs to do? What he can do best, or only he can do…
He gonna sling shot Nami and Himself to the gate? :P Or shoot the keys to it...

OK, after having reread the relevent posts of yours, I now sort of see what point you were trying make. So what you're saying is that Usopp beating Jyabura and rejoining afterwards would have sent the wrong message to readers. That message being that to deserve to be a Strawhat you have to be physically strong (like a Zoro or a Sanji). And that message is one that totally goes against everything the Strawhats stand for. Is that the point your were trying to make, or have I missed the boat here? If yes, then I agree with you, it would send the wrong message, to some readers at least. I say some readers because whether one sees this message or not is all a matter of one's own personal interpretation of the story. So whether or not the message is there depends on the person reading the story. Or stated another way, you can say the message is there, or you can say it's not there, which would both be perfectly valid viewpoints, IMHO. I'm rambling aren't I?
Anyways, I also agree that Usopp fighting Jyabura would have done nothing for him or for the story - mainly for character development reasons however, not for thematic reasons.
-

We don't know much about Kabuto's range for the moment, but there's one possible way to help save Robin; if Usopp can destroy the Bridge of Hesitation (Is that right?) he can stop Spandam and Robin from passing through the Gates of Justice.
-
OMG the Usopp debate's just so intense!
So there's pandaman again this chapter , thanks for pointing it out
Usopp will prove himself when the time comes, we just have to be patient and wait for Oda -
I´m sorry fpr being so stupid but there are two thing I didn´t understand…
first what is the meaning with the part where Sanji said "Alle these foods but i didn´t understand it at all"???
and the second is he using the rouga move from Jab on the last page??? Isn´t that a move where Jabura uses his hands???
Sorry for wasting your time but I would be glad if you can answer my questions
-
It's no big deal.
1: It just means that Sanji says a lot of french food terms, but the translator doesn't understand french.
2: Nah, he just says "No way that'll happen, "Rouga"!" Meaning: "No way that'll happen, Wolf-style Kenpou fighter!"
He's just adressing Jabura, not using his moves. -
