Who is Kakin and why does it seem like Mangatream is not exactly using a good translation?
Edit:
Nevermind, but the trans still feels off.

Holy smokes, the chapter is way more detailed then I expected, but togashi is already tired, back to scribbles next week I guess. Now let's all await the great announcement of another hiatus.^^
HQ Jump scan about next Anime arc.

Thanks, glad it's confirmed.
Ok, I might get flack for this. . .but I've always been lost by Togashi's brand of dialogue. It's, as far as I can think, the only manga where I get this feeling of getting lost halfway through 70-80% of the dialogues. Both the supposed "character dialogue" and the more prominent "exposition dialogue". Maybe Togashi is very hard to translate properly into english, or it is already hard in japanese, or maybe it's just me. . .
But, I don't know, just the first panel's dialogue escapes me. "So what's our reason? Monkey?" "Why are you always so uncooperative? Guess you don't care that it would be great for everyone involved if things worked out with this".
I'm sorry, I just. . .get lost.
Also, mankind was wiped out as a result of the expedition? Opening Pandora? As a result of an experiment behind colsed doors by V5? Or they experimented after that first expedition. . .? And the accounts of a Hunter's log about the New World are from an expedition made hundreds of years ago. . .but Beyond and Netero already went on an expedition and saw stuff for themselves, right? So. . .why do they need the accounts of what happened hundreds of years ago, can't Beyond and Netero's experiences fill out all their needs about what they'll find there? They left nothing behind, no records, nothing?
Arrrrrrgh! Fuck it I feel damned stupid. . .Damn you, Togashi!
I am also confused. What are the scout expeditions affiliation? Are they working for V5 or Beyond Netero?
Great analysis of Hunter x Hunter 131:
Wow.
HunterxHunter seems to have a hard time not being unbelievably great. This episode totally blew me away. The animation, the art, the music…just phenomenal. The CA arc has given us so many incredible episodes, and this is yet another one, cementing its already established status as the greatest action shonen arc ever written (and animated.)
This wasn’t much of a fight, as others have pointed out. Pitou never stood a chance. You could chalk it up to Togashi being up to his usual tricks, doing what nobody expects, but I think there’s more to it than that; the entire confrontation between Pitou and Gon was never meant to be a fight in the conventional sense. It was always about what this meant for Gon, and Pitou as well. Netero vs. Meruem was very much the same, except that it ended up being a bit longer. Having Gon engage in an epic brawl with Pitou would have been pretty great entertainment, but it would have muddied and distorted the significance of this confrontation. Gon’s victory was never supposed to be celebrated, and I love how somber this episode felt. It was terrifying, awe-inspiring, and horrific. Gon’s defeat of his enemy was brutal and filled with carnage, and his actual transformation left him looking like a complete monster, a label that was previously applied to Pitou.
Let’s talk about Gon first. He finally snaps in this episode, and as I understand it, did something similar to Kurapika to gain the large amount of nen he did. He becomes an adult and utterly annihilates Pitou. This marks Gon’s ultimate loss of innocence, after it being built to for so long. Even if he survives this encounter and makes a full recovery, h will never be the same. He can be cheerful, happy Gon all he wants, but in the end he can’t escape his actions. He’s officially joined the ranks of Killua, Kurapika, and in a sense many of the adults he’s met throughout the series; a person who has suffered profound loss and ruthlessly killed others, whether out of vengeance or other reasons.
Now, Gon has already slowly but surely losing his pure hearted goodness throughout the arc since its start, mostly through the harsh and brutal things he witnessed. Kite in many ways was training Gon to become more mature. When Gons saw a Chimera Ant crush a human’s head in episode 82, Kite instructs him not to look away from the violence when Gon attempts to. Throughout Gon’s journey with Kite, the older Hunter told Gon to fight with the intent to kill, and indeed that’s what Gon did, though it isn’t clear if he actually killed ant Ants before this point. Regardless of whether he did, the unrestrained brutality of what he does here is what marks the end of Gon’s childhood.
Gon’s actions are motivated mostly by vengeance, and in his killing of Pitou, he follows Kite’s directions to the letter. Remember what Kite told him back in episode 82, after Gon slices through the body of the Ant he’s fighting?
“You must crush the head.”
Crush the head he did. Aside from Gon’s first kick, all of his attacks were directed at Pitou’s face, until it was completely destroyed. Gon wasn’t satisfied with merely killing Pitou; he kept beating her, over and over, in a scene was disturbing and not victorious. This cold, murderous defeat, one motivated by hatred of both Pitou and Gon himself, is what sets this apart from anything else Gon has done. He gives it his all, sacrificing whatever it took to crush Pitou. Gon has always been willing to go the extra mile to stubbornly achieve what he wants. He almost got himself killed in the Hunter exam, he sacrificed his hand in the fight with the Bomber, etc.
What Togashi did with Gon’s power-up is exceedingly clever, and makes it unlike any I’ve seen in any shonen ever. Aside from transformation being akin to that of a beast instead of a hero, and Gon seeming to be the monster in the “duel” instead of Pitou, it symbolizes Gon’s loss of innocence and transition into adulthood. It’s very literal- Gon commits the act that the series has been building to as an actual adult, a representation of his current mental state. Clever, Togashi, clever.
And…the arm! Again! I looked over all the incidents involving loss of arms again and realized that they all were the left arm, except Kite, who lost his right arm. Pitou here did the same as she did to Kite, even in death; she sliced off Gon’s right arm. This completes the parallel between Gon vs. Pitou, and Netero vs. The King. Also, interestingly , Gon lost his arm as Killua dove to protect him, while Kite lost his arm as he dove to protect Killua and Gon. Also, the humans have always been the ones losing arms, while the Chimera Ants lost their own arms through their own actions and willingness, and in both cases (the King and Pitou) it was as an act of submission, while in the case of the humans (Kite, Netero, Gon) it was in the midst of battle. Interesting…Now all four combatants have lost their arms at some point. This is important for Pitou especially, because what she does here serves to contrast with her encounter with Kite. At that time, she was acting out of hostile playfulness, toying with a human because she liked it and the thrill of battle. Here, her pure devotion to her king is so powerful that it is quite literally undying, and she slices Gon’s arm out of loyalty, not callous malice. It highlights the difference between her and Gon in this fight, and what each is fighting for. There’s a parallel in Gon and Netero’s final attacks as well. Netero’s Zero hand drained his life force, much as Gon is draining his own to achieve his power. The conclusion of the two fights are similar as well, from what can be inferred from the way this episode ended, though I expect Gon to alive. There’s a clever parallel there as well, assuming I’m correct. In Netero vs. the King, one was severely injured (the King) and one died (Netero). Here, one was also severely injured (Gon) and one died (Pitou). Note that the ones severely injured are the protagonist and antagonist of the arc, and the pure genius of it all that it is not really obvious who is who. Something else: this arc has been about the maturation of a child, in both Gon and the King’s story. The way their stories unfold differ, and in that the difference between them is emphasized. I’m astounded by the continuous parallels that Togashi stablished between Gon and the King without ever having them actually meet each other.
A masterpiece of an episode, this is. Chilling, disturbing, and hauntingly beautiful. Bravo, Togashi and Madhouse. The anime world’s better with you in it.
Also, R.I.P. Pitou, my favorite of the Royal Guards and one of my favorites of the series cast in general.

I felt lost as well and I assume it is partially because of the translation. Oh well, time to reread the last few chapters.

No you're right, it's a lot to get through, it doesn't help that it's an exposition chapter and Togashi has to set up everything again after a long hiatus.
Don't worry, Lee. It's the same for me. But instead of trying to wrap my head around it, I'll just wait and see what else happens in the chapters to come. Slangstream trying to spice up the dialogue by adding 'deep' words (all that hope and despair talk etc) didn't help its case either. Another factor leading to confusion might be the 2-year-break we readers had as well, not being up-to-date whatsoever in most cases.
In any case, the art was impressive and totally not what I was expecting. I'll refrain from getting excited for the new arc though since, well, you know the reason.
Oh man, that was some classic Hunter X Hunter right there.
But i will feel even worse when it enters Hiatus again :(
Oh, my sweet summer child.
Oh, my sweet summer child.
Hiatus is coming. The mangaka already sent scribbles to every important lord in the lands.
Fire and Ink.
Yeah something feels off with this translation, and the fact that it's mangastream doesn't help either.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Fire and Ink.
All volumes must burn.
Great chapter full of information.
It's shaping up to be a huge arc with different factions of hunters going there.
I'll comment more on the chapter when I have more time to reread it. Some bubbles could be clearer to me when Viz's translation is out on Monday.
Finally, is it too much to ask for the people in this thread to take a hiatus on the "hiatus/scribble/Togashi is lazy" jokes until such things happen again ?
I'm just gonna believe Bakuman: Togashi edition and now that Oda is on hiatus it will fire Togashi's ambition even more.

I´m going to have to think and reread this chapter a couple of times again, but from what i understand Netero wanted the Hunter´s Organization to explore the dark continent, but he didn´t order it- The funny thing is that, although he is stating that it´s not an order, he is pretty much making everything possible for them to accept it (the "dreams of the dead old man", the "this is an order, herm, it´s not"), and that´s why Cheadle said that it was an order, but it wasn´t and considering no one else was involved, the choice is upon the Zodiac.
Monkey Says: Going to the DC doesn´t affect us and we will be Beyond´s expedition direct opposition
I think Monkey pointed out something he considers good, the fact that they will be hunting Netero, as well as fulfilling Netero´s wish, but Cheadle doesn´t think that is the best approach, so she replies "ok, so we have no reason to go".
Monkey says the uncooperative line because he feels this is the best approach.
About the second question, maybe the first Log is more detailed. Maybe the first expedition went farther than Netero´s.
Just a guess
kouch lee, it's the translation. for example, saiyu's dialogue on page 17:
"can I say something?. I don't give a shit if we go to the dark continent, but i'm opposed to hunting Beyond."
subscribe to weekly shonen jump…. lillian olsen is translating the new chapters and she's the only person in the world who has translated the entire series. her version is beautiful.
anyway, great chapter and beautiful episode. im most surprised about togashi seemingly intending to give a plausible explanation for nanika, but I don't know why I am.
What you call out a week where both BERSERK and Hunter x Hunter chapters suddenly arrive?
The week when Naruto did something so utterly vile that the universe had to balance it out somehow?
The week when Naruto did something so utterly vile that the universe had to balance it out somehow?
But it was known where Naruto was going with so there shouldn't be disappointment.
Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if Togashi gone through another hiatus after this chapter since it 'wore' him down
ok i'm definitely intrigued, Togashi. show me where you're going to take this
two things
and this seems like the perfect landscape for loads of deaths. Seeing how Togashi wants to kill every single Spider, this might be a good place to do so.
Buce, your posts in this thread always end up making me long for a re-appearance of the spiders. You sly fox you.
On another note, this is the first time I'm envious of Alpha subscribers. I can find satisfying alternatives for all the manga I'm interested in, but in HxH's case you Alpha guys have a clear advantage.
That Gon-san has got to be the best piece of merchandise released for Hunter x Hunter.

You can notice kouch_lee is from Barcelona. And since Viz doesn't want our filthy European money, your suggestion sadly won't make anyone happier.

So you don't want to read One Piece translated by stephen? Eh.
That translation was terrible. That's the shit script they're putting up?

ok i'm definitely intrigued, Togashi. show me where you're going to take this
two things
- I immediately liked how it was noted that what they'll be encountering and fighting isn't an enemy in the strict sense; it is more so something fighting to survive
- It was interesting how the question of disease and viruses was stressed. I'm curious to see how Beyond and his crew will deal with the fact that they'll be ingesting and inhaling all sorts of weird shit while they're there. Someone with expert medical Nen?
and this seems like the perfect landscape for loads of deaths. Seeing how Togashi wants to kill every single Spider, this might be a good place to do so.
I'm not really that enthusiastic about the Spiders, but the whole concept that 'batting against nature' is awesome!
If you have an Android device, it's super easy to subscribe to the english WSJ even if you're not American. You just need to install the APK which is easy to find.
So you don't want to read One Piece translated by stephen? Eh.
Stephen translates OP in Alpha..?!
having trouble calling it an great episode when it drags it out so much.
So lillian olsen is Viz's translator? Does that mean we have to wait for the volume (can't be stuffed to use plural since it'll only be like one) ? Or is it that Viz monthly thing?
Of course I do. But I can either cry into my pillow at night due to the lack of access for us, as you put so eloquently, filthy Europeans or accept cnet's version and be satisfied.

There is a workaround for ios devices as well
I'm not translating this series anymore because… it's a lot of work and it's in English Shonen Jump anyhow. Especially when you have to do something like this in a couple hours (For a chapter like this, you'd really want to spend a few hours just studying the technical terms and researching the best ways to translate them in a way that's understandable). But don't be too harsh on MS's guy. This chapter seems to be full of "We're not going to explain what this is, we're just going to say it and you'll have to figure out what it means based on context later on." sort of lines. Like, people are referencing tons of events we haven't heard of before, possibly ones that won't be explained at all, they're just there to give some context as to mankind's current understanding of the Dark Continent. I forget who that Kakin guy/organization they're talking about is. I think that's Beyond's group? Or what Tokkou is... There's a page where there's an asterisk on the word Tokkou but it doesn't explain it anywhere. Oh wait, ok Kakin is the country that Beyond is using the authority of to make a voyage to the Dark Continent.
Togashi has a very strong tendency towards not going out of his way to make something clear. He'll have a character suddenly change streams of thought, have characters lie about their motivations, have characters speculate about what's going to happen, etc. Sometimes there are big logistic leaps, sometimes things are pretty much explained straight out. Figuring that all out is hard. And this chapter's made up of like... 80% political/business speeches. A lot of the time in these situations you just need to translate things literally because you, the translator, don't really know what they're talking about so there's little room for interpretation.
Kakin is China. The country's leader, Hoicoro, is funding Beyond's expedition to the dark continent. "Tokkou" is just an abbreviation of "tokubetsu tokouka," or "special voyage dept." The MS translation doesn't explain it at all.
Well, thanks for both explanations. Those 2 words were driving me crazy.

I can help out with the Android part: just Google the Shonen Jump apk, and install that, it will let you subscribe for the service even if you don't live in the USA. (Personal experience here, living in Switzerland this worked for me)
As for IOS I don't know…
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
I installed the Amazon App Store, and from it I could get it, but I didn't yet because I was waiting for.. this.
And here I was embarrassed to even read the thread because I didn't fully understand the chapter. Anyway, glad it's back, didn't blow me away but want to see where it goes.
Ok, that made me feel less stupid. Thanks everyone!
Also, it seems the Alpha (btw, is it still called Alpha? didn't they drop that name and went just for "WSJ"?) service has awesome translations. If the line Mr. Toto from page 17 reads like he says, then hat MS went for. . .is not even on the same league. It's not even the same meaning or direction.
And from what kewl says, I guess my initial hunch that Togashi is a pain to translate to begin with was mostly true. As I said, it's not just this chapter, but tons of other times I had trouble with the way he does exposition. . .and he does LOTS of exposition all the times. Things kinda fall into place as the manga keeps going, so I wish that'll be the case here too.
You have my undivided attention.

For ios devices it is much more complicated:
1. Change your apple ID account settings to US. I would use a fake adress in the state of Delaware (DE, Area Code 302), since you do not have to pay a sale tax in this state. When itunes is asking for payment information select "none"
2. Once you have an US-Id you automatically have access to the US-itunes store. Now you can download any US-app, like the viz media app
3. Buy a US itunes gift card ($) at ebay or elsewere
4. Redeem the gift card
Now it becomes tricky because you need an US-Ip-adress. There are two ways to change the ip adress: either you use directly an app for your ios device or change your notebook into a hotspot
5a: download an app ( Proxy Pal etc,), which uses proxy server or a vpn connection. Unfortunately, for most of these applications you have to pay
5b: Or: Use a programm like Hotspotshield on your notebook in order to get an american ip. Then turn your notebook into a hotspot (google if you dont know how). Now take your ios device and connect to the self made WLAN-Hotspot
6. Now you can shop through the viz app for digital issues.
Well I'm glad he isn't scribbling for HxH return. Needs more Hisoka or Leorio tho.
WSJ really should have an in browser method to view the chapter by now, they're alienating over half there audience by not having it.
we really needed a main character for this chapter. Even just ending it on a glimpse of gon. With all this set-up and hype for the dark world i just wonder how Gon and Killua are gonna have any chance for it

Yeah I know, but I'm hoping for in browser viewing to be available world wide or at least in places where WSJ is available. It's been out over here for nearly a year now and they haven't really shown any sign of it happening.
I feel horrible for being already hyped as hell for this arc.

I don't think Killua plans on going? They said their farewells for now. Would be weird to see him so soon again.
Killua traveled with Gon because he didn't really know what he wanted to do.
For now he has Alluka to take care of, because I don't think he would take her with him on that endeavor.
