BTW in islam men have "hijab" too, and it is mandatory to cover the area from their navel to their knees except in front of their spouses. So "benefits" go both ways.
So if a muslim dude goes swimming he has to wear huge shorts huh? Like no speedos

Last week I was standing at the bus stop on a Sunday morning when some old guy walked past, looked at me and did a double take, then yelled something incomprehensible along the lines of "YOU FUCKING" blah blah blah while walking continuing to walk. I turned to him and said "EXCUSE ME?" and he continued to walk away. Wowww old man, you sure showed me! Your turned back as you quickly walk away from a 5'4 girl wearing a little extra material and eating a cookie is so brave and honourable. And that's true of all the others too, they won't face me. They feel cool enough to shout some obscenities at some random harmless muslim girl but not brave enough to hold an actual conversation. Losers.
lol he probably thought you didn't know any/much English. So make that double coward.
It's funny in the US how (at least in the Northeast) it's not entirely uncommon among black Americans to know some family friends who might be into Islam on some level. Like it's been that way for awhile. When me and my friend were walking around New Haven (American city, lot of black people etc) an old black guy riding by on a bike made a comment to her.
And that comment was salam alaikum lol.
I mean being white I don't know much more about it then that. I know Hiroy grew up in Brooklyn or Queens someplace. Hiroy am I sounding remotely accurate here?
Man why can't people just get along. As the world's guidance counselour i suggest more crossover cooking.
Nothing bridges gaps and brings people together like trying each others local dishes. Panetoz – Älska Ikväll

We also need more hats.

RIGHT-O! Muslim guys won't wear speedos, and wear the regular ol' swim shorts instead. Of course there are probly guys pretty lax about this, but I'm talking about what a regularly observant Muslim dude would do.

Haha, brown people get that too. Funniest story my bro-in-law tells is how he and my sister were talking to some older Pakistani dude at a store, and my bro-in-law's from India, his family are all Sikh. His name is Satvinder but goes by "Sat". So the store owner asked him what his name was, and when he heard he was like "no no no you are pronouncing your name wrong! It's Saad, not Sat! You should be proud of your name!" Lol and he just stood there not knowing what to say lolol.
But yeah it's common that if you're from the Caribbean you'll either have some friends or one or two family members or even Neighbours of different religions, and you learn about their customs and stuff. I have an uncle who's pretty much athiest but he says asalamualaikum to me lol.
This is a tad bit late but who cares? I lost my paycheck a few weeks ago and I don't know if someone found it or not but it was never used or returned to me so, my boss handed me a brand spankin' new one yesterday. Best part is tomorrow's also payday for the new pay period so I'm getting 2 checks this week! WOOT WOOT!
Today is my last final!!!1!
Economics. But after the English one yesterday, my confidence has dipped a lot. Thankfully I studied quite a bit last night, but….mm. At least after this, I'll be done for the spring.

really? I always thought businesses couldn't do that.
Beforehand I'll admit I have made some wacky interpretation on many comments I interpreted more or less as "westerners are biggots for not understanding other cultures". I read earlier comments more closely a second time and will just put out there that many of the statements made are reflective and searching in ways I didnt realise. So I'll try to finess my comments in light of these discoveries and try to not sound so blunt.
@Monkey:
Yeah that's what I'm saying is dumb. You're taking the conservative portions of the religion/geography and complaining about people having fair and free discussions about it outside of those areas? What? I mean even just beyond that making no sense, you're essentially falling victim to the same sort of cultural hysteria that islamophobes do. You're trying to frame the entire discussion of Muslim issues to it's ugly extremes.
You are in essence saying that it's frustrating to talk about Turkey, Kazakhstan, Bosnia, Tunisia and Indonesia. Because Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Egypt exist.
I mean what is that about really? What does that really do to the discussion? To wipe aside the more moderate secular and liberal areas of the Muslim world (to say nothing of Muslims living the west like Femme or my friend) as being frustrations in talking about the bad places? Like they…don't count or something? There's a really unhealthy mentality to that. Especially regarding people in the west's perceptions of the Muslim world in general.
On the contrary I think this issue provide a strong counterargument:
the fact that they are less commonly worn in more secular and moderate muslim countries should be evidence that the whole enforcement aspect does play a major role? Even within secular countries, such as Indonesia we see that the veil plays exatcly the same role.
@Monkey:
How the hell does it make it a non-problem. You're creating a false dichotomy here that's entirely in your head.
That is my general impression from the debate at large. Not on this forum very much, but out in the real world, there is essentially this discussion surrounding the veil, that it's oppressive quantities is just a myth. It is more or less considered mean to bring up the fact that women are being treated like pariah by their own families for trying to take liberties.
@Monkey:
It's almost like the person here having trouble framing the discussion isn't us but you. You say it wasn't one 14 year old girl that informs your views? No doubt true. But it sure as heck does seem like you vastly lack the scope beyond the extreme examples outraging you from the newspaper.
I'm sorry that discussing one topic does not address another entirely different topic.
So let me get this straight.
You're angry that nobody had a debate about forced veiling.
You're angry that no one on here had the slightest sympathy toward theocratic laws and arch-patriarchal social pressures.
You're angry that instead we discussed something many of us had actual confusions and questions about, instead of the horrible thing that literally zero people disagreed with one another on.Ok, sorry about that. Everyone let's sit around making identical posts about "Hey, that's fucked up", "Yeah damn that's bad", "Yes I also think that is really bad". "Me too".
So the next time people sit around talking about the gray area of weed laws. We should know to buck up and have a heated agreement about heroin being bad.
Angry? I'm as tranquill as a hindu cow. I'll admit I was sort off bugged that certain comments began discussing more or less if choosing a hijab over non-hijab is analogous to choosing Coke over pepsi. As we have concluded, it most obviously is not. Therefore I decided to point out the fact that there is little freedom to speak off in this context.
So it turns out my college registers all its students to vote. So I could go and vote anyway :D In the EU elections. Fuck the local elections.
God don't mention the EU election. The smear campaigns are everywhere around me.
Everything is someone elses fault and if you don't vote for me and my party we're dooooooomed. Ugh.

Oh yeah, they definitely can but it probably depends on where you work and the circumstances. The first thing my boss did was talk to the payroll guy who checked to see if my check had been cashed or deposited. If it had there was little chance I'd get a replacement but luckily it wasn't. He put a pay stop on the lost check to make it null and void then printed out a new one/replacement for me. Done and done.

Living in Sweden too? I Can't turn My head without seeing a board with an old hag on it, accompanied by a punchline like ''yes to Europe''. Nothing is as unengaging as politics in this country. Especially in the EU, who cares about Sweden in the parliament? Like really?

Direct deposit FTW.
Direct deposit FTW.
Lol, yeah I'm getting it Friday after work as it was sternly suggested to me by both my boss and the payroll manager. I should've had it a long time ago. -_-
Do you have a smartphone though? Whenever I do end up with a check for whatever reason, I deposit it on the spot with my bank's mobile app. Pretty hard to lose it that way XD
Well…..my luck is kinda...good today. Managed to finally get an Italian class, found a charger that works for my phone, bought an SD card for my future Wii U and the newest volume of Magi...
..plus my professor from my library class stopped me in the hall to talk, and said he was very impressed with my overall work and liked my conciseness with annotations and whatnot. I have to say, that made me feel really good. Do I smell an A? :D
Let's see if this luck extends to the exam. One hour left before it starts.
Congrats man and good luck!
Thank you!

Huh, didn't know that, good to hear. Reminds me of a couple of months ago when a co-worker lost her check, think somebody stole it, dunno.
Yeah, regular checks (not cashier's checks) aren't like cash. They can be cancelled. As long as they haven't already been cashed. But then, cashing a stolen check doesn't sound like the wisest move either.

I have a smartphone but no app that allows me to deposit my checks. I'll have to talk to my bank about that.

Indonesia is NOT secular. Moderate =/= secular. Turkey is hardly truly secular either, same with the European Muslim countries.
The most secular might be Azerbaijan.
Plus you have to weight the effects of globalization, which have turned a vast world of varying national clothings into a near identical sea of jeans and t-shirts.
And now, Captain Ugly will interrupt this wonderfull discusion with a important fact of his life.
[hide]"Today, a mute person visited the library..I couldn´t talk with him…I should make a sign language class.."[/hide]
Now we can go back to this wonderfull discussion.

Okay, moderate it is then. My point remains the same, regardless.

What's your point? That naturally it goes away given freedom?
Went to buy condoms, got offered orange-flavored ones when i said i don't have any particular brand preference. I guess go guy that wants me to spice up the bedroom?
So my day in a nutshell:
-Wake up at eight in the morning
-Go to school
And I have two more weeks of this with graveyard, school and six more entrance tests for police and sheriffs departments.
It's too fucking hot out today. But i bought a whole lot of fresh fruit at the outdoor market.
And got a deal on a combined food processor and mixer. So now imma be making smoothies to combat the heat
How hot is it over there? It's a measly 84F over here and I'm quite "enjoying" it. :P
Enjoying the temperature including a two kilometer walk down to the convenience store to get some cool soda and walking back home with a few liters in my bag. Needless to say, it'll take a while until they're cold enough to be of any relief.
I feel so much shame when Wolfwood posts about food. He's like a food magician and i picture him just staring down the ingredients until they form themselves into delicious food whereas i just stare at my kitchen for a fraction of a second and it catches fire.
Form themselves into food… :ermm:
Gaah I'm so bored today. My brother and mother went to go see the new X-Men movie, and while that would've been something to do….meh. I barely saw any of the other movies, but if they say it's good....shrugs
When you realize that to be replaced at your job after you quit, 3 people had to be hired.
Same feeling over here Chrissie! Went and secured my Summer job in less than 10 minuets after walking in and just asking the boss if I could return for Summer. Asked when I could start, yay!
I had a similar experience when I got back from vacation and everyone was so relieved because people were losing their shit over projects I normally work on. It's a good feeling.

At the peak i think we were getting past 90 degrees fahrenheit. And no wind
People were not meant to live and work in those conditions. Those are slack of and go bathing temperatures

What the fuck?
It's 62 f here. Which one of us is near the Arctic circle again??
Welcome to our late May. Then June is ~50-60F and all rain again.
Fuck the gulf stream, just fuck it. It's like Australia up here.
Atleast wait until we get our summer break before baking us would ya nature

Eh atleast it's never boring
I suppose I'll have to be the cynic, then, and say that it seems like that would just make me feel like I should have tried to leverage some sort of raise, or otherwise gain compensation more in line with my evident usefulness.
Edit:
Curse you, existence of several posts on the next page depriving my own of much needed context!
I thought Fahrenheit was like an invention of Bradbury. Is it like a monetary currency? In México we are in rainy season so couple that with the heat and it gets nasty in the metro.

And you are telling this to a girl who's moving from one continent to another soon? :P

Eh, I always speak in Celsius. I've just learned to be accommodating when I'm mostly talking with people from the States these days anyhow.
I don't even remember how to convert those things to Celsius. I hope i don't die because of that.

I plan on doing this anyway, since I just passed the 2-year mark.

Me neither, but I know how to use Google.

Unless you planned on moving to the US it wouldn't bother.
They and like the Bahamas are the only places in the world who remain admant on being opposed to the rest of the world just for….whatever the hell the reasoning behind it is, spite? pig headedness? convinience? Probably the last one though

I suppose I'll have to be the cynic then and suggest that these issues were already thought through and agonized over. And the last thing anyone needs is emotionally clueless lumps like yourself dredging them up again with a dry shitty post.
I plan on doing this anyway, since I just passed the 2-year mark.
I haven't had a raise in 3 years. Sucks that I like the work but I need more money so this will probably be my last year at this job.

She refused to give me a raise and was insisting to raise my hours and lower my pay even more among other things all the while saying "You are my best employee, but I am doing this because you are leaving for the USA at the end of the school year and you won't stay with us."…. Also she knew my family was in a tight spot and thought I'd accept anything because of that. What she didn't know is that I can go from extremely invested to completely indifferent in a matter of seconds if pushed to it. And push me to it she did, with our last talk where as a qualified teacher I was trying to advice her for the new (unqualified) teacher who was doing HORRIBLE mistakes right and left and she told me off with a "Who are you to judge her?". Should I mention here that I was the only qualified teacher in the whole school? Yeaaah…. Not to mention all the extra shit I was doing for the school outside of work hours. sighs She just shrugged my quitting off as if she didn't care, yet I keep hearing of new things that made me realize exactly how much she depended on me to keep the school running smoothly. A kid trying to stab another kid with a pencil and hitting the teachers, the teachers getting 0 breaks or the new ladies complaining about working until 6, teachers forgetting important days and announcements for the parents, the Summer performance rehearsals not even starting and more shit like that.
Anyways. It's the second time I leave a job where I was overworked and underpaid. It's the new popular thing in Cyprus to treat your employees like shit it seems. Whomever I talk with, they have the same issue. They work full-time and get crap pay and treatment under the excuse of economical crisis and stress. I was called in from several places the past month and what they suggested to me was irrational like fuck. The best one must've been the one who told me "Hey, come in for 3 hours a day, twice a week and I'll pay you 10 euro for each day. Enough to cover your fuel expenses!" XD Yep. I'll be there in a flash! Only got one good offer that I couldn't take due to the ending of contract being in January and I am leaving Cyprus this summer.
I swear, in the past 5 years Cypriot employees have turned into complete sleazebags. It was not like this before the whole crisis hitting the island. Whatevs. I am gonna leave pretty soon so fuck'em all.
Crisis turns good bosses into douchebags. Mediocre bosses into hell, and bad bosses into procesed food.
Whatevs. I am gonna leave pretty soon so fuck'em all.
Now this I can get behind, emotionally clueless lump that I am. You'd posted a fair bit about how miserable your job was (or at least that's how it came across, I suppose) in the past, I recall. I certainly wasn't trying to suggest any sort of failing or shortcoming on your part with my post, and hope it didn't come across that way to you. Certainly, knowing what an impact you've had is something to be proud of; I just feel that, at least for me, it would be tinged at least somewhat by a sort of vindictiveness at those who failed to properly appreciate me now being forced to face how important I had been.
I remember, some years ago, my mother had to take on a second person's position at her work, in addition to her own. She was almost literally working two jobs; her pay never changed to reflect this. There's only so 'good' I can imagine feeling about that. Screw 'em and move on, though, as you say!
I haven't had a raise in 3 years. Sucks that I like the work but I need more money so this will probably be my last year at this job.
Did you ever ask for one? Just checking XD
