@Nidhoeggr:
Fair enough, that is more than you can say about most shows today.
When did this LN adaption trend really pull off, though?
Can I blame KyoAni and Haruhi for that? I remember LN adaptions being way more scarce before 2006 (even though we had our fill of awful VN adaptions during the early 2000s), and the ones we got were of higher quality like Kino no Tabi, Boogiepop Phantom, Baccano (fairly recent, i know), Slayers, etc.
Then again, maybe it is just betting on the safest horse for the entire industry now because of the financial crisis post-2007. There is no fanbase more stable than otaku, as long as you keep the waifus pure that is.
That's exactly what I see the industry is doing. Instead of marketing to any and all audiences, a lot of companies make series targeted at a very specialized crowd to ensure baseline sales of around 1k to 3k DVD/BDs at HIGHLY inflated prices. Shows like Code Geass or Attack on Titan are much broader in terms of audience and have that extra bit that pushes them to wider popularity, so if anything, they're good for making lots and lots of money.
Sometimes I don't understand why the anime industry doesn't choose to do something about it, like Hollywood did after the Great Depression. Remember that they were pretty niche and stuff at the time too, but they improved their image with self-enforced guidelines like the Motion Picture Production Code that specifically limited the kinds of otaku stuff we see in anime right now. But whatever makes them money, I guess.
