Love: His compassion. The guy works 30 years in creating pink snow, just because he thinks it makes people of his country happier. Now that's some appreciation on the little things! Even when he was he lured to die he was just happy that doctors weren't really sick and could still treat the ill. Not to mention he blew himself up just to avoid Chopper feeling quilt of killing him. Speaking of that, is death was definitely one of the saddest and most beautiful in the series. And his final speech was one of the best in all fiction and history.
Loathe: He probably should have left actual doctoring to the professionals. Or at least studied it a little bit more and abandoned his cough experimental medicines. Also whenever he told to Chopper how brave and glorious pirates are and encouraged him to go out to the sea some day, did he ever happen to mention that piracy was, you know… illegal? So that at least he'd know what's coming?
Overall: 4.5/5
Love: His dying speech was epic.
Loathe: He is a failure as a doctor, to the point of killing a patient with a gun(Or turning into a frog if you're a an anime watcher).
2/5
Love: He was a dedicated man. He gave his all for other and believed in freedom. His sacrifice was really sad and touching.
Loathe: He was responsible for so many accidents that his dedication is more of a curse to the people of drum. He was a total idiot yet he thought that he could treat people whilst having no information about the human anatomy. That's just morally wrong that he is risking other people's lives because of his belief in himself.
Rating : 1/5
Love: That speech. Dude, that speech. Along with Ace's death, Bellemere's death and Robin's flashback it was the greatest tearjerker of the series imo. And before getting under Kureha's wing, Hiluluk was the only good thing Chopper had ever had.
Loathe: His way of endangering people. If he had struggled for years to make sakura "blossom" in winter, he could have spent the time learning some actual medicine.
2.5/5
I missed some of my fav chracters..
Anyways.
Love: Dude made me cry, he just did, and I fucking loved every bit of his character.
Loathe: I could say that he sucks as a doctor blah blah, and thats a totally valid point the other guys are making, but I was never really bothered by it myself, so..
5/5
He's the antithesis of your fallen mentor trope: sure he has the zeal, but he's so unbelievably useless that he ends up doing more harm than good in his quest as a doctor. And this is where I love and loathe:
Love: Oda makes it work. Really well. Behind that zeal is a heart of gold, through the caretaking and sacrifice for Chopper, and someone who's really changed despite his past. And when he tells that story of his past and the blossom tree, you can see how it shows through his present character, probably his lack of knowledge concerning medicine.
It's also really great seeing him as a foil to Doctor Kureha (loveable idiot vs. cranky genius). Also I have no shame in admitting that his death and Chopper waving the flag is one of the few times I've cried when reading One Piece.
Loathe: he's only a flashback character. But I have a feeling that Oda will flesh out more of his character, especially the part when he was a thief. cross fingers Here's to hoping…

NOOOOOOOOO!
Love: This guy has more D than most of the D.
Loathe: He could have tried to learn medicine from Kureha first…
5/5
Love: That speech. His quirkiness. His dedication to way out of reach ideals. Loving Chopper like a father would.
Loathe: Being a quack doctor.
3/5
Love: Design, cool personality, fact he decide to help Chopper and saw him as his son. Dying moment of awesome.
Loath: he probably really hurt some people, he genuinely tried to help.
4,5/5
Love: Hiruluk is one of my favorite characters in the entire series. His flashback with Chopper is one of the best tearjerkers I have read in a comic format. He is a man among men, and the scene where he gets naked in front of chopper is really funny and sweet at the same time. A perfect example of Oda's skill at writing strong backup characters. Without these, we would never feel for the main cast as much as we do.
Loathe: There were a couple scenes where I thought Hiruluk was being just too cruel to Chopper. It was really hard to read at times.
4.5/5
I don't know why people are rating Dr. Hiluluk for his medical skills. His character is plainly written as a mad scientist. It would be like rating Croc negatively because he is a villain who ran an underground organization. Hiluluk never said he was the best doctor but was trying to help people in his own way..in a country were doctors were being controlled by the king. He never wanted any reward for the honest effort he was putting in. In a way he taught Chopper what he needed to want to become a doctor. He was the crazy person who motivated a reindeer to become a pirate. His crazy actions alone had an impact on the hearts of characters like Dr. Kureha, Dalton, Isshi 20…
Even though Dr. Hiluluk wasn't the greatest doctor he will forever be remembered as one by Chopper..not because he couldn't manage to cure a single person of a physical disease but because he tried his best to cure an entire country.
Without Dr. Hiluluk Chopper would have never became a pirate and its very possible that he wouldn't have become a doctor either since Hiluluk was the one who asked Kureha to teach Chopper because he had a good heart.
Chopper learned some of his greatest life lessons from a Quack Doctor. Failure isn't final. There is no disease that can't be cured. There was nothing impossible for those who bear their convictions across a pirate flag!
With his 30 years of research Dr. Hiluluk allowed Dr. Kureha to give Chopper one of the best send offs in the entire manga..
Love: everything. He was funny, a good father and the most decent person on Drum Island. He had a great dream and it gave us an emotional scene at the end of the arc. And that speech! I tear up every time.
Loathe: Nothing, Hiruluk is awesome.
5/5
Hey, I'd like to make a suggestion, but feel free not to pay me any mind. I just feel like "5" is too small of a number to rate the characters on. I think 10 might be a better option, but that's just my opinion.
Well, we sort of are already on a 1-10 scale if you count the 0.5-resolution system that people are using. (More like 2-10 but, whatever)
I think 1-5 is perfect, because it works like this:
1 (Loathe) - 2 (Dislike) - 3 (Neutral) - 4 (Like) - 5 (Love)
And the 0.5 let's you pick something in between if you don't feel particularly attached to one of the above numbers (feelings).

Because he was risking people's health forcibly and repeatedly. It's not like the people said go ahead and test it on me. He was forcing them to endanger their health and life. And I'm pretty we saw him shot on people just for that.
And someone could not like Crocodile because he is a bastard.
Love: The kind of person Hiruluk was. Beneath the demeanor of a quack doctor lies a man who cares nothing more than the health of the people and more importantly, the welfare of Chopper. Even in death he was glad the doctors of the country were okay.
Loathe: You crazy?
5/5
Love: Nearly everything about him, but in particular: his interactions with Chopper. They are tremendously sweet, funny, heartbreaking and even insightful. I love the speech he delivers to Chopper about the dying man - a clever way to introduce us to his interesting backstory.
Loathe: Nothing, his flaws only made him more interesting and endearing to me.
5/5
Oh, you guys already did Norland, huh? That's sad.
I don't know why people are rating Dr. Hiluluk for his medical skills. His character is plainly written as a mad scientist.
No, he's a quack doctor. In other words, a con artist.
Even though Dr. Hiluluk wasn't the greatest doctor he will forever be remembered as one by Chopper..not because he couldn't manage to cure a single person of a physical disease but because he tried his best to cure an entire country.
He also killed sick people
Without Dr. Hiluluk Chopper would have never became a pirate and its very possible that he wouldn't have become a doctor either since Hiluluk was the one who asked Kureha to teach Chopper because he had a good heart.
Chopper would have become a pirate anyway because he's a characer in a series and was created to be part of the strawhats. So with that set, he could have had a role model that didn't suck.
Chopper learned some of his greatest life lessons from a Quack Doctor. Failure isn't final. There is no disease that can't be cured. There was nothing impossible for those who bear their convictions across a pirate flag!
All that romanticism is nice when it translates to exploring the world or training to become stronger. Not when it becomes toying around with sick people and killing them.

And someone could not like Crocodile because he is a bastard.
He was known as the Quake Doctor that was part of his scene. He was examining people with good intentions. Chopper inherited this from Dr. Hiluluk but the difference is Chopper has Dr. Kureha's training which improve the chances of successfully helping others.
There were only two free doctors on Drum Island.
1. Dr. Hiluluk who was a quack and tried to help people without charging them.
2. Dr. Kureha who was seen as a witch. She came down and helped whoever she wanted and took whatever she wanted.
Dr. Hiluluk was written as a quack doctor and he was good at being that type of character. Hiluluk didn't give up trying to help people, and failure wasn't final for him. If he stopped trying to help people because his drugs were a failure than he would contradict himself since he truly believed that there was a cure for everything. Chopper got the best of both Hiluluk and Kureha…That's why I personally like Chopper's flashback the best. Just my opinion.

You asked why being a quack could be perceived as bad. I told you why. Because he forced himself into people to risk their health and life and hurted people to do so. I wasn't trying to force my opinion into you if that's what you thought.
No, he's a quack doctor. In other words, a con artist.
He never took money from his patients. Yes he was a quack doctor and a thief…but he wasn't a con artist. He sincerely wanted to help.
He also killed sick people
I don't recall him killing anyone. The gun he had was a tranquilizer gun. The medicine he had might not have been able to cure a common cold but it didn't kill someone.
Chopper would have become a pirate anyway because he's a characer in a series and was created to be part of the strawhats. So with that set, he could have had a role model that didn't suck.
If you look at Chopper's flashback it was Hiluluk who accepted Chopper and he was the one who put all those crazy ideas about pirates and adventuring in his head. If you look at Drum Kingdom and Dr. Hiluluk…it was Hiluluk who arguably had the most impact in changing the hearts of others.
CH 141 pg 15, 16, 18...Who was going to save a weird injured monster? Dr. Kureha was the only other doctor and she doesn't do charity cases like this. Chopper could have died if it wasn't for Dr. Hiluluk. Most people weren't crazy enough to want to risk their own life to help a random abominable snowman-like creature.
!
Who on Drum Island would be that role model? You would literally have to create another character to fill in for Dr. Hiluluk.
All that romanticism is nice when it translates to exploring the world or training to become stronger. Not when it becomes toying around with sick people and killing them.
Hiluluk being a Quack Doctor was one reason he was an outcast. His crazy methods and his desire to help people regardless of how he is treated carried on in Chopper.

What you loathed:
Favorite comment goes to Mr. Luffy:
"Loathe: As much as his faults are sugar-coated, the man was a complete quack. Not just because he's not a licensed medical practitioner (Chopper is also technically a quack as well) but because Hiriluk's efforts apparently more often than not turned out worse for the patient. We may never know how many patients may have died because of him. His well-meaning assistant Chopper poisoning him in an identical manner of blind faith was poetic justice in a way (though absolutely heartwarming and tragic, don't get me wrong)."
Finally,the poll! With 22 votes, Hiriluk's average score is…4.11.
Thanks to all that responded! I will post my next pick later on today. Here's the HINT: Our next character is weaker than most yet still incredibly powerful.
Until then.
Hmm…..Hody Jones?
Hmm Our Lord and savior buggy-sama
Love: Hiriluk was love itself. From the very scene he appears nude in front of Chopper you know he's an honest and straightforward man, and their relationship makes for one of the better flashbacks in the series. His sense of duty as a medic, and the effort he puts on it, stating he'll fight like a pirate, is pretty awesome, especially the moment he arrives at Wapol's castle and discovers the Isshi 20 isn't really sick, shedding tears of joy. That was touching. Of course, he also has his funny side, which make him even more likeable.
Memorable dying speech gives him bonus points.
Loathe: I can't think of anything. He was a quack, but his intentions were always the best. I can't really hate him for that.
All in all, he was a great father figure for Chopper. 5/5
Just out of curiosity, who else makes his reviews first before checking others?
@Light:
Just out of curiosity, who else makes his reviews first before checking others?
Me. And I guess most do it as well, it's only natural for some reviews to be similar.
I call dibs on Usopp for the next one.
That sounds like Kumagawa fom Medaka Box or Furuichi from Belzhebub.
The King of Snipers!
SOGEKING!
Thanks to all that responded! I will post my next pick later on today. Here's the HINT: Our next character is weaker than most yet still incredibly powerful.
Spandam and his amazing 9 Douriki.
Whoa, sorry guys. Long day of work, fell asleep afterwards. Without further ado. Love & Loathe #10
Let's get our fuckface on! It's time to evaluate: Spandam**!**
As always…Here's the deal: We are looking to hyper-critique a character and try to pinpoint what makes them great and what makes them terrible. After enough people respond, I will organize what are the best and worst traits of the character, and compile an evaluation post later. Also, don't worry if you have the same answers as others, the point is to figure out a common denominator for the character.
So the two questions for you are:
What one thing do you consistently love about Spandam?
What one thing do you consistently loathe about Spandam?
And give Spandam a rating of between 1 and 5, with 5 being the highest(.5's are acceptable - ex. 1.5 or 4.5). I will tally these.
Enjoy.
Love: He's good at being hateable.
Hate: I felt very indifferent towards him, even though I was supposed to hate him.
His comedy wasn't funny, his personality was annoying, the Robin abuse was tasteless, but not exactly shocking enough to wish for his head. Because he was so harmless, him getting a beating didn't really feel satisfying to me.
One could say that him being a despicable fool was the whole point of the character and I agree, but I think there are other characters who do that job better than him like Caesar or even Hody, so he now feels overshadowed to me.
I'll bump him to 1.5/5 if only because people love to hate him as shown by many people here and that's kinda impressive, but I don't really care for Spandam.
Love: It was easily the most gratifying thing watching him get snapped in half. Also funkfreed was an awesome sword.
Loathe: Just about everything about his character. I understand that's what his character was meant to be, that terrible, annoying, cocky, useless type of enemy. But he was still super annoying.
Overall rating: 1.5/5 only because he played his role in the arc so well, he was supposed to be hated, and he sure did deliver on it.
Love: That there is someone out there who can be the one guy in uniting all One Piece fans in unanimously agreeing who is the most hated character.
Loathe: Useless yet holds a high position with unbelievable amount of power? Does heinous actions just to further his own goals? Treats even his loyal subordinates like crap? CHECK CHECK MOTHERFUCKING CHECK.
1/5 (because causing strong emotions, even hate, does have to count for something)
(Hachi don't have to feel bad anymore about his rating :swanson:)
Love: He has an awesome sword.
Loathe: He is pretty idiot for a guy with such big ambitions. And way too clumsy. And he has dare dare to put the fiasco on the CP9.
1 for the sword
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Spandam and his amazing 9 Douriki.
You're good. You're really good.
Love: Without him, there wouldn't have been a buster call. Without the buster call, Shu wouldn't have come to Enies Lobby. If Shu wouldn't have come to Enies Lobby, Yubashiri wouldn't have been rusted. If Yubashiri hadnt been rusted, that badass sword fight with Ryuuma might not have happened.
Yes, that's how much of a stretch it is. That's how much of a stretch it is to have any sort of appreciation for his character.
Loathe: Like I even need to say.
0/5
Love: He was really well portrayed as a villain/complete and utter asshole. It was so satisfying to see Robin snap him after everything he did.
Loathe: Ignoring the fact that he was supposed to be portrayed that way, pretty much everything about him.
I don't know if I should give him a 0/5 for his character itself or a 5/5 because of how well written he was in regards to his role in the story.
I don't think there's any redeeming quality to Spandam… Maybe he was heavily influenced by his father but whatever.
Love: He's just a character that allows all the readers to unite and say "Yep, he's a bastard." Unity ftw!
Loathe: Yep, he's a bastard
0/5
0.5 for the sword

Everyone please note that the LOWEST possible score that I tally is a ONE (1/5)! I have had a couple of these before but it seems like it might be a problem with Spandam.
I figure I should give my reasoning behind this. I know this thread isn't exactly scientific but when I set a precedence I would like to stick to it. Having as many consistent variables as possible is important. It isn't fair to the previous characters we have evaluated if I allow votes that weren't allowed for all of them.
So for those who would like their votes to count please edit them within the guidelines, if not that is fine too. I don't want to sound unappreciative, it matters to me that you are taking the the time to post on this thread at all and your loves and loathes will still be counted .
Thx.
Spandam and his amazing 9 Douriki.
! Very nice!
I hate the guy, but Kudos to him for being a terrible person, as he was designed to be. 5/5 (Come on guys give the fuck some love)
Love: his passion in trying to become a "hero" to the world…a pity he failed at every step of the way towards trying to achieve that...
Loathe: that he was a bastard. The way he treated Robin - mocking her, stomping on her and pulling her by the hair.
I do admit though, it was enjoyable seeing Spandam fail and quite amusing seeing him accidentally activate the buster call and dig a massive hole for himself with his words and actions.
3.5/5 (as a character with a role to serve in the story, he was quite good and memorable)
Everyone please note that the LOWEST possible score that I tally is a ONE (1/5)! I have had a couple of these before but it seems like it might be a problem with Spandam.
So all my Hililuk hate was wasted.
Love: He provoques the reaction he is intended to provoque. Has a nice and mostly irrelevant sword.
Hate: Held an important position by means of nepotism. He's weak, stupid, bad tempered, a bad boss and a terrible human being. His face is broken because he was such an asshole years ago, and he doesn't even care. Everything about him is wrong.
1.5, He doesn't even get the lowest score because that would be an acomplishment for him (or if you prefer, he makes a good job on being hateable).
Everyone please note that the LOWEST possible score that I tally is a ONE (1/5)! I have had a couple of these before but it seems like it might be a problem with Spandam.
Then I'll round mine.
It's only fair considering it's on the opening post.
! Very nice!

I'm trying to lose some weight. Do you have something more healthy?
I guess I'll give Spandam 5/5. Pity vote, because he's being torn apart like a frog in a high school science class.
Love: Even though he's the head of CP9, he whines like the spoiled brat he is and dying at how he placed all the blame on CP9 when he failed lol
Loathe: The way he treated Robin. Thank God she snapped his spine in half like the twig he is. He can get a bit annoying but it's still hilarious.
I give him a 4/5 because he did his job as a villain. There's something wrong with people if they're giving him 1's and 0's because he acted like a cold, ruthless villain…which is what some villains act like and are supposed to be.
Yeah…how should we go about rating Spandam? A villain character meant to be absolutely hated?
For the sake of consistency, I guess I'll follow the previous voters and rate him based on how much I like him personally.
Love: ...Funkfreed?
Loathe: He's a completely selfish, unappreciative, arrogant, cowardly, manipulative bastard who cares only about himself and keeping his power. He is the person I'd least want leading anything of any sort. He's worse than the criminals he sends to jail.
1/5

Well, this is the love and loathe thread. No point in giving a high score for a character if you don't like them. It's a subjective thing.
Just look at Crocodile. 2nd place so far and also a villain. There's several different kinds of villain. Hell, we have another one in 1st!
Doing a good job at being a villain could be considered a thing you love about the villain though.
