It was a decent episode. Crappy cliffhanger though. =/

For anyone who expected Dressrosa to be decently paced, that ship sailed the moment it was revealed the Breed filler was only three episodes.
Thankfully, there was a lot of content to play off of, resulting in this episode, which was good even if it covered less than a chapter.
I'm so happy we have Spanish-like music for Dressrosa. It fits the theme and inspiration for the country.I also like Issho's voice. It's deeper than I expected, but it sounds true to the character. Then I read asihegak's post about Zatoichi, which made me appreciate the casting even more.
Dressrosa's off to a fine start, and I'm enjoying the visuals and music a lot. Can't wait for next week.Art: B

Episode was great, directing was so good. I was enjoying it until I found out they changed the cliffhanger. It kinda pissed me off.
Ide did a good job on this.
-
I mean that for example, instead of saying 'masen' at the end of stuff for politeness, he just says 'asen'
Go watch the old Zatoichi movies
Then you will understand
Even the way Fujitora walks sticking his leg forward is reminescent of Katsu Shintaro's classic Zatoichi
I have the highest praise for Toei for getting his VA and his character right

Speaking of, does Toei have a name yet for that new piece of Spanish-music? I want to see if I can find it on YouTube.
-
Damn they didn't animate momo hitting luffy in the nuts!
-
Great episode. Only bits I found annoying were the cliffhanger and wanting to punch that stupid Monkey in the face when he was talking to Sanji about fairies.
! it's also interesting how the bits with the toys feel so much more disturbing now knowing where they come from.
Also, the opening is really growing on me. I'm sure it's probably because I was so sick of We Go that something different playing at the beginning is just swell.
-
Already prepared for the suppaaa~~ slow pace
I like that moment between Zoro & The Blind guy. Nice filler :D -
Animation was good, but I wasn't impressed by much else. The audio was so off that it affected my enjoyment of the voices, but I think Fujitora's fit from what I heard.
Gosh, I hope that slow waking won't be a joke the whole arc- seems like they've just found a dumb quirk that will help them slow down the episodes even more. Great. Blind people definitely don't walk that slowly- also, they move the walking stick from side to side, not tapping every step. He's an admiral; if anything, he shouldn't even need the damn stick to move super fast.
16 page episode was far too slow; nothing happened this episode.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I love the theme song, though. And that damn Monkey toy was so annoying, but slightly funny. I like the art direction for the toys. They move nicely.
-
A reasonably good episode with above average animation. Direction was satisfactory though not remarkable. Artwise it was good, but what really stood out was the use of watercolors for the backgrounds of Dressrosa. Ir really helped give that first impression of the city a dream-like quality
The biggest filler material in the episode surprisingly revolves around Fujitora. While the pace was ok through most of it, it dragged in quite a few spots notably in his sections. The episode isn't even a full chapter of the manga, leaving it at a weird cliffhanger. Not exactly something that will keep viewers waiting with bated breath. Is the audience really expected the care that much whether this blind man that showed up out of nowhere loses all of his money because he is gullible enough to expect his opponent to honestly call the correct color? That is outside of the fact that he reminds us of a certain famous movie and TV samurai hero….
Speaking of which, anyone familiar with the Zatoichi samarai movies starring Shintaro Katsu may notice that his voice actor gives a performance that sounds quite a bit like Katsu. Hardly a coincidence considering in this episode he comes across as almost a carbon-copy of Ichi, not only in appearance, but in demeanor and his attraction to gambling. Though a blind man playing roulette doesn't make much sense compared to dice, which made more sense because Ichi could feel the dice outcome with his fingers...I guess Oda wanted to add some differing idiosyncrasies to set him apart.

Agreed. I think more than any other Admiral, Fujitora's already close affinity with Zatoichi is made even more blatant in the anime. The voice and manner of speech, the way he uses his cane, the dramatic yet casual passing of a "fearsome opponent" (Zoro), the fact that Fujitora was playing roulette in order to earn money to give to the townspeople. Heck, all that's missing are the loaded dice and the singing.
The only issue is that the Toei walking sequence was pretty tedious because it lacked the physical performance of Shintaro Katsu which made such scenes compelling.
-
Oh no. It was such a great episode (with the exception of the pointless,in my opinion, Zoro and Fuji scene). But WHY did it end like that? The attack should have take only 1 more minute.

Show-paced episode, but good artwork and animation made up for it!
I really didn't like how they made Fujitora win so many rounds tough. 15 times in a row… It almost sounds like he was cheating with his power! Is that the angle they were going for? :getlost:
-
Huh? I think it's obvious the angle they were going for was that the rest of his senses aside from sight were superhuman. Especially since the odds of being right 20+ times in a row (including the ones the goons lied about) are astronomically low.
-
Pretty good episode, animation has been pretty good so far and LOL Luffy getting compared to an 8 year oldXD I always did think it was weird how Sanji went with the Monster group, normally he stays behind with Nami and Robin, heck Chopper was as shocked as I was about this
-
this is the 1st time i enjoyed watching OP anime since…well quite sometime i guess.love the sketch...like an old-school.
-
Oh my god such suspense! Will the old blind man be able to win at the casino?! Will his opponent actually admit it if he does?!! Or will he just lie again like he did the past dozen times?!!! NEXT EPISODE FUCKING WHEN
…Is what I am definitely not thinking right now. Yeah, that was a completely ridiculous cliffhanger to end it on.Liked the Spanish-y music for the establishing shots of Dress Rosa though. So nice to be getting new BGM actually composed for the show again, rather than relying entirely on movies for new music the way Toei did all the way up to the timeskip.
-
LOL at the filler shit and the ending… But overall good episode. Next one should be really nice as well.

tfw no VA for Rooster-head yet

Either it was a wrong translation or the anime cahnging things up but I don't remember Momo saying that he will never fly again in the manga.

WILL the cheating goons bet everything and then not cheat?!
Next time.
-
Will the mysterious blind guy who we also see in the intro as an admiral, be revealed to be a big guy?
-
i like those lights in the stair filler!
and is it just me or the old blind purple guy looked younger than in the manga?
-
Well that was disspointing. I am not a big fan of fillers at all.
-
Good episode, I for one liked the filler, hit or miss I guess.
-
Oh yeah, they forgot the panel where Luffy gets punched in the crotch by Momo.
-
Good overall. They need to stop adding fillers with Nami making her look even more of a "fanservice doll".I know they are fun but they leave a bad taste to the viewer. It had good animation , but felt a bit dragged out on some points. They should just cut the retarded waitress-sanji talk and add "THAT" moment into the episode. It'd be 10 times better than this.

The blind purple guy, I never thought that he would walk that slow.

The blind purple guy, I never thought that he would walk that slow.
Although he is an old man and a blind person, something else prevents him from going fast to the places which he does not know. Indeed he is a
! swordman!

fujitora aint no lucky. he was using haki!!! to win that roulette game :)
-
way to not end when the actual chapter does lol
-
i want that spanish soundtrack

Stellar episode all around. Here's to hoping Toei can maintain this quality for awhile.
Spanish track was a nice touch.
I'm actually glad the episode didn't end where the chapter did. People are way too eager to eat through the content we've got, but if Toei can stall without making it feel horribly slow, I'm all for it. And while a round of gambling may seem anti-climatic, I try to envision the scene from the eyes of an anime-only watcher. Obviously "old guy" is going to win this final bet. Obviously the goons are going to lie. What's a mystery is what he's going to do to shut them the heck up.
I'll agree that the stairs felt like obvious padding. Blind people don't double-tap every fricken step and take 20 minutes to move 5 feet. I wouldn't worry about it continuing in the future though. This is probably just one of those things that characters do when first introduced that quickly gets dropped once we know more about them. Playing up the pseudo-illusion of him being a poor blind guy before it's revealed (outside of an opening) how awesome he really is.
Personally I found "old man's" voice irritatingly gruff, even if it is true to the source. I'll get used to it though.
Loving the opening music even more now. Still have my gripes with parts of the animation and the Blackbeard interim though.
-
great start to dressrosa arc. They did a good job with padding, and they should have plenty of chances to do so in this arc

no he's blind and can sense the ball…. if he were to say figure out the color patern he could sense where they were... its implied he's listening to it.

ummmm what filler? that happened…http://img.batoto.net/comics/2013/03/06/o/read5137be515a097/img000005.png
sometimes it seems like the people here are just addicted to complaining…. like seriously, the cliffhanger is a completely pointless thing to bitch about guys.... once again remember that the anime will make changes, and its fine because to the anime only viewer, they dont know what will happen next... it's not about the guy winning or losing, its about what will transpire when he gets cheated again...does he know he's getting cheated? will a good Samaritan tell him abut it? will shit break lose? that is the point of the cliffhanger... that and it lets them add more content to the next episode, so stop complaining already over such nonsensical stuff.
-
fujitora aint no lucky. he was using haki!!! to win that roulette game :)
Haki might factor in there, though it is also his very keen sense of hearing that helps him "see" the ball. Regarding how he can tell whether a square was white or black, however….haki? Or perhaps trial and error?

That actually does kinda work in this sense. Since the situation is so similar to a Zatoichi gambling sequence, the Japanese audience no doubt expects the blind man to whip out his cane sword and threaten his opponent, maybe even cutting them down. The blind man here probably had some plan and no doubt he already knows he's being played for a sucker. There's no way he could prove it himself, so I imagine he was going to intimidate his opponent into spilling the truth.

Yeah, the walking itself wasn't well handled where he is slowly tapping the ground twice before making a single step, instead of just tapping while walking. About him playing up the illusion of being a harmless blind fool, you are probably right about that. Zatoichi often played the ignorant fool in order to keep a low profile and that's very much on display here. Though the blind man here could have easily done that without shuffling about like a crippled, elderly man.
-
Loved that episode! It was a bit slow, but very captivating. The way they set up Fujitora with Zoro and the gambling table was fantastic. I was totally engrossed in the moment. <3 the anime!
Though I really wish they spent more time on fillers. Jumping into Dressrosa when it isn't even complete in the manga isn't a great idea. Unless they skip a few weeks or add more filler in between, it's still no good to break up such a superb arc.
-
I really loved Fujitora's entrance into the anime. I get delighted over the dumbest things like how Fujitora's outfit was violet. I was thinking: Oh, that's neat. I like violet. Sanji's reaction to the waiter was what mine would have been if I had been in his shoes. Yes, now I really want to try squid ink pasta. I always thought it looked nasty before, but One Piece has changed my opinion. Lastly, the ending of the episode didn't really feel like an ending though. Now that we're in Dressrosa, I'm just bouncing up and down with anticipation and excitement. This arc has so much potential and I can't wait to see how things play out.
-
I don't mind that they cut the episode short. At least, we have something to look forward to next week.
-
Seriously, are some of you people stupid or something or do you not understand the concept of spoilers?

! Isn't everyone saying this is in fact Fujitora kind of a spoiler, of not a big one, but still ?
Yeah that seemed like an amazingly ill-thought out place to end the episode from what I skimmed through.
-
So they couldn't have made him say black like one or two times? He had to yell white each and every time?
Anyway, the cliffhanger would be much better if it happened a couple of moments later…
! with Luffy butting in.
-
fujitora aint no lucky. he was using haki!!! to win that roulette game :)
that would imply he can hear the voice of things, something only gold roger could do.
-
I'm shocked! A second good episode that actually left me wanting more! Can Toei go for a third consecutive win?
-
What do I have to do in order to watch the episodes in Crunchyroll? The thing is that I look for an anime on the webiste and then it gives me info about it but no videos… What should I do?
-
Seriously, are some of you people stupid or something or do you not understand the concept of spoilers?
In regards to the old blind man, Toei is already spoiling that he is an Admiral in the opening, so anybody can put 2 and 2 together.
Really, it was pretty obvious in the manga, and even more now in the anime.
