The 4000 km bit is at least easier to explain than the 5000 km in FI. This one could make sense if Oda chose to keep it that way in the volume release.
One Piece 723: Change of plans

@Toraish:
You just saw that manifest in the fact that Sanji got to the Sunny in time to stop Doflamingo from mercilessly murdering three Strawhats and Momo. That's plot convenience at its worst.
True but I think this are the kind of situations we've all come to accept when reading this particular genre. The whole suspension of disbelief thing.
-
While I don't think the 4000km flying eyes thing is that broken (taking in account visual travel), I agree that Violet's ability was badly designed.
The crying whales attack was pretty bad.
-
Going by your translation, the bird's range of flying is 4000, not the vision itself.
agree.
and she could see the lightning because.. it's a lightning. someone could see the lightning from faraway..
to actually see the ship.. i assume the lightning nami did doesnt strike just once. so the explanation would be that.. she saw the lightning from faraway and quickly zoom to the position. and there you go, the vision of thousand sunny.
what more miraculous is sanji's speed to get to that place. i don't recall there's much time difference between when law's notice that nami was close by and the time when dofla flew to the ship.
sanji and violet must be not too far from the spot. or else, it would be ridiculous.
and law is too naive, did he not know that dofla could move over the water.. or was he too confident that he alone is enough to hold down dofla? or is there something else below his sleeve? -
The crying whales attack was pretty bad.
It's funny that you would mention it since, as distasteful as it was to many Western readers, that was actually an attack based on a Japanese pun involving tears and whales. It's probably the one thing about her ability that can be accepted with suspension of disbelief.
-
Law just survived his encounter with DD AND an admiral and was able to run away and outrun DD. Obviously DD doesn't outclass Law as much as say lucci outclasses buggy. Then law said this chapter that he would willingly fight DD on the Bridge as part of his plan. So he doesn't believe DD has the power to stream roll him. Therefore it's highly likely sanji can at least hold DD off for a few minutes on his own. Is that not logical?
No, In a real fight DD would cut of his leg instantly and then slowly kill him in a painfull way while mocking him for being weak. Thats what he usually does (law, bellay etc)
he isnt the kind of guy who enjoys fast fogjts, its the humiliation, torture and mocking that turns him on in fights.
Still doesnt change the fact that luffy lost like 3 times to CC before defeating him, and now sanji, number 3 in the SH power ranking, is gonna be able to hold his own against this arcs main villain.
it sort of spoils the tension and suspense. if sanji vs DD is a fair fight, DD should be fodder for luffy.. -
with age of piracy tecnology,it does
It takes a few weeks to cross the Atlantic ocean by boat. Theoretically, the world of one piece could be much larger than our own world, but not brasil is an island in the grand line big : )
-

The crying whales attack was pretty bad.
Yeah the whale thing is best left forgotten.
I wonder whether the seeing far thing or the seeing peoples memories was just her being creative enough to find alternate use for her DF abilities.
-
I have to say that I'm loving how Doflamingo is like "How about a drink, Law?" (in another time) and the way he's treating him like a little brother.
Also interested in Dofla's backstory, you live a shitty life yet still has a hand over the CP0…
-
wooh. just awesome chapter. now i can sleep well.
–
Doffy realized that he should not underestimate the SH crew. He should've known that from the start. It's too late for him because Luffy has gotten himself some supporters already just by participating at the colosseum.
--
i swear, this arc just keeps on getting better and better every chapter.
-
Is it just me or did the fighting fish change direction from this page http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/723/19 to this page http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/723/20. Either they could sense the danger of a fight or the pressence of a CoC ability user.
-
@Toraish:
Sanji was going to the port where he thought Sunny would be headed. If it wasn't for Violet, he would have had no idea that the Sunny was on its way to Green Bit to make the exchange with Law because he had no means of contacting Nami on her Dendenmushi as she wouldn't answer his calls. Violet told him where the Sunny was, probably warned him about Doflamingo's proximity off-panel, and told him to hurry there.
That's plot convenience no matter how you look at it.
yeah ,true,i didn't thought about the fact that the sunny moved from its original placement.
but anyway,Oda just need to reduce the range to something more acceptable in the volume like he did with the Hodi attack thing..counting the average onepiece island seeing around all dressrosa and the sea nearby shouldn't need a ridicolous range for her powerI live in Sardegna, one of the biggest islands of the Mediterranean see,and the entire island is around 320Km x 180Km..so a range of 400 Km should be more than enough to cover dressrosa, even if it is a very big island.
-
talking about pun, is violet's 4000km skill is a pun as well? maybe oda got too carried away with puns. i mean the tear whale thing is weird but oda still include it for the sake of pun.
-

Nor does CC, Vergo, or Doffy. It's all about how abilities match up remember?
-
Doffy realized that he should not underestimate the SH crew.
Arguably the best line in this chapter.

Come on, they haven't even started fighting.. I actually think that thats what DD will try to do act, the whole not underestimating thing would be him instantly trying to go for the jugular but that's where Sanji steps up and actually holds him off.I really don't think they'll be a multiple rounds with DD this time since he knows whats what(there's a trope name for that) and it seems that the only reason Law is alive is because Doflamingo seems to have a soft spot for him.
-
By the way, Mangapanda is trying to go "darker and edgier" with their trans.
According to MP, Violet killed her subordinates. Holy shit!
-
@Uncle:
Cutting off Sanjis legs would fit in so well into DD's mentality…
So this is the situation Law was conserving his strenght for. Lets see how the mountain will be moved. That would be a welcome shock to be honest, it's about time something tragic and unexpected like that happens in One Piece. Apart from Shanks losing his arm and Ace and Whitebeard dying, One Piece has been lacking in terms of traumatic moments which will only add more suspense and excitement to what makes One Piece an already outstanding manga.

He didn't just realize it, he hasn't been underestimating them from the beginning.
-
-
To late for that now.
I'd argue against anyone saying Dofla didn't prepare well for the Strawhat.
-
Please, someone confirm to me that there is NO BREAK next weak!!….?
Next week is color page!
-
Arguably the best line in this chapter.
Have you guys already forgotten that he said the same thing to vergo during the PH arc?
hes always been aware of their strenght. he knows what really happened to moria, and of course crocodile.
-
Can't. Disgest. All. The. Action. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! XD

I believe so. Someone mentioned that Aohige already explained it, but…
senrigan = clairvoyance, but it's literally "thousand (sen) [unit of distance equal to 3.9 km] (ri) eye (gan)."
-

I'm saying it was well delivered…

Really? I don't know this just doesn't seem like something that would be enjoyable. Why would you want a character you care about to through so much suffering. I don't know maybe I'm getting old(I think something like that would have appealed to me awhile ago) but things like that would just turn me off the series.
-

… that just makes it worse. Oda's now officially sacrificing logic and the believability of his series for a few puns. WSJ save us all.

There is no way you can argue that Sanji is even close do DDs level.
its like saying coby could fight kuzan because they have different styles…

Lol .

There is no way you can argue that Sanji is even close do DDs level.

Nobody is arguing that.
Sanji won't be having a Smoker moment in here, for example.

Have you read or seen game of thrones?
Jamie Lannister was the best swordsman in Westeros and then lost his swordhand in season 3. but it actually made him a more interesting character. -
Nami is apparently half-Longleg.
-
There is no way you can argue that Sanji is even close do DDs level.
its like saying coby could fight kuzan because they have different styles…
Or like saying that Buggy could defeat Zoro, Or that Mr.3 could hold of Magellan
Totally outrageous of course. No way things like that can happen when different ways of fighting clash
-

its like saying coby could fight kuzan because they have different styles…
No, no, no. I am not arguing power levels.
All I'm saying is, Sanji knows(probably mastered)Observation Haki therefore he has a much easier time noticing and evading Doflamingo's attacks, plus he's fast and strong and has support from both his crew and Law, all this things could theoretically allow him to somehow hold DD back.

@Toraish:

Is the senrigan bit really supposed to be a pun though?

It looks like that because of her heels.

I have to say, the fact that this argument over Violet's ability has taken up so much of the thread, and that the ability has been drawing so much venom, is a little bit absurd to me.
As far as the focus on the number goes, yes, it's completely ridiculous. It also, in all likelihood, doesn't matter, at all. Sure, I'll have to eat that if at some point in the arc Violet talks about something happening on the Red Line, or some such, but barring that, the important take-away is that she is capable of observing the entire island, and some of the ocean around it. The exact numerical range is irrelevant, unless some of you plan on making a stat sheet for her or something. Is the ability to observe the island in that way incredibly powerful? Sure, but no more so than, say, Enel's ability to monitor everything that was happening in Skypiea, at all times. Where is this talk of it causing inconsistency within the internal logic of the series coming from? It's always been established that Devil Fruit powers come in wildly varying degrees of utility and strength; this is simply more of the same.
Is it a particularly creative or novel ability? Arguably not. Certainly, too, it is being blatantly used as a plot device, in what is far from the most subtly crafted writing in the world. I'm not trying to argue that it's particularly good, or a shining example of story-telling; ultimately, though, it's just mediocre, at worst. The very passion with which some have been attacking it is what baffles me.
-
@Toraish:

gotta agree with you. puns are fun but sacrificing logic or making super weird thing like the whale tear is bad. thanks ccc for the explanation.
-
Is the senrigan bit really supposed to be a pun though?
Well, if CCC and Aohige say so…
And 1000+3.9km+vision is close enough to a vision range of 4000km that otherwise sounds so very arbitrary and odd to explain the figure. I'm sure Oda didn't mean to break his world in the process of making a funny gag for his readership, but he really had no idea how badly he messed up this time.
-

If Doflamingo cuts off one of Sanji's legs, it'll go to show how terrifying the New World actually is. Everything will change about how the fans think of future enemies in the story and how the characters have a lot to lose when facing those enemies. I feel One Piece needs more of that kind of suspense.
-
Gladius for nakama:ninja:
I hope sanji won't get annihilated.also gladius vs ussopp coming! -
You cant let plot convinience rule over logic this way. Law was not even able to put up a fight against DD but now Sanji is going to tank him for minutes until the ship reaches the bridge? if you ignored the chapter and instead looked at the characters, their abilities and strenght, Doflamingo should cut off sanjis leg or feet in a matter of seconds just for fun, taking away black leg sanjis black leg… sanji is like 3 leagues behind.
but of course thats not gonna happen. Sanji is gonna be able to do what Law couldnt, and fight on par with DD until they reach the bridge. Just for plot convinience. DD probably wont even use his DF abilities to make it a fight where sanji can survive longer, again for plot convinience. its very much not what i expected from this arc.
Of course, you just had to forget that Law was fighting both Doflamingo and Fujitora for the sake of your argument.

Lawl you're being a bit of a Drama Queen and you're blowing this out of proportion. Lets get back to talking about the chapter please.
-
Of course, you just had to forget that Law was fighting both Doflamingo and Fujitora for the sake of your argument.
So you seriously think Sanji could fight Doflamingo, in an even battle?
Wow, that removes alot of suspense for the final luffy vs DD confrontation.SH are too powerful after the timeskip and it removes all suspense. The New World looks is looking more like The Noob World from what we have seen so far.
-
So you seriously thinks Sanji could fight Doflamingo, in an even battle?
Wow, that removes alot of suspense for the final luffy vs DD confrontation. You're putting words on other people's mouths.
Sanji is not close to Doflamingo's level, but he's not that far either.
-
Speculating that Sanji is going to lose a leg should almost be a bannable offense at this point. A main character losing his primary means of fighting would never, ever happen in manga like.this.
-
@Panda:
The very passion with which some have been attacking it is what baffles me.
I'll get back to this once I'm done with my homework for the day, but know that I'm a hopeless perfectionist. Regardless of the ability's actual implications and the significance thereof, though, this should be a nice catalyst for a conversation on the importance of inherent consistency. It's something that I've been wanting to discuss with someone for a while now (note: not debate - discuss).
-
So what's with all the bitching and complaining about Violet's ability? Hax abilities are 60% of DF's. He made a pun, don't take it too seriously. I highly doubt Oda was like "Shit the math that matches her abilities name is INSANE!". People need to GTFO themselves.
-
@CCC:
Have to wonder though… is she really restricted to bird's-eye-views, or can she navigate her observer mode in/around/through things?
Like if she got near the red line, could she sneak her vision up into the Gorosei chamber and read a document on their table?I wonder how much the visual/ textual descriptions are meant to be metaphors for her power? Frankly I'm still confused over how her 'whale eyes' are supposed to work. I'd guess that what applies to one aspect applies to the other?
