One Piece Special - Episode of Merry: The Tale of the Other Crew Member
-
What's with the lines on Usopp's body on the bottom pic? Reminds me of the Michelin Man.
-
too much emotion packed into 2 hours
-
Im sad that they waste great and awesome animators on a special for an arc that was well paced and animated in the first place. Your Mileage May Vary though.
-
TV version was better

XD I mean c'mon, it's more like we're seeing a future Nami transported to the filler (big boobs and all…even the TV flashback showed her w/ a smaller chest). XDD

Funny part is Apis made it into both versions lol

I respect Toei for that though. It may be filler, but it's still technically part of anime continuity. XD
-
felt rushed and the models looked fugly at times, but im satisfied. the final fiight between Luffy and Luuci looked EPIC though. and luffy standing back up replaced my Tsunayoshi avatar. XD
i'd say a 7.5/10 it was great but the original just had more time to work with.
these specials are the REASON i prefer to tell eople to just watch it. it looks good but you lose what made the moment special in the process. hese specials are really only for the die-hard fans and should never be for the newcomers unless it's that fightscene in which case show them SHOW THE WORLD
:D
-
I hope Fishmen Island gets a condensation movie. If only to give it better animation and spare a few souls from seen its weekly adapted version.
-
I liked it. The last eight minutes made me teary-eyed, so that's a plus. T_T Merry….
Art was overall great, except for a few scenes where the quality dropped frequently and characters (especially Lucci) started to get off-model. Animation for some of the CP9 fights felt very stiff and jagged.
BUT DAT JET GATLING. Mmmmmm-hmmmm.Sweet.Hearing Brand New World got me hyped. It would have been perfect if Dear Friends was added in somewhere. I would have loved that.
I'm sad that there wasn't any T-Bone or Doberman in this special, but overall, it was nice.
Now that you mention it, I think there was a quick shot of Doberman. Or was it Onigumo?
I'll probably need to rewatch the second half. -
Wow, simply amazing, sure there where some minor plot points missed in this special, but overall you could see the whole picture and not miss anything mayor, so much stuff packed in so little time. I loved it, and the Brand new world song in the escape scene was priceless. 10/10!

I agree that the music choices were great, especially the ending theme. I was not expecting a revised "Memories", and that song insert alone made this worth watching.

any idea when the subbed version will be out

any idea when the subbed version will be out
Has to be transcribed - then translated - then error checked - then timed - then uploaded to match the raw - then a batch sub+raw video converted - tested for timing - re-done if needed - then released.
Can take up to a week at least - but more likely close to a month a lot of people do that sort of thing in their own time. You could try watching it without knowing Japanese you know the rough storyline so it wouldn't be totally confusing to you.
-
Wow they actually didn't recon the Apis arc? HA!
-
Wow they actually didn't recon the Apis arc? HA!
And yet when they showed that flashback to Aokiji warning them about Robin, he was clearly on Long Ring Long Land…
CONSISTENCY! -
Luffy the Time Traveler
-
I saw that in one of the clips and was all "wut?''
And then he apparently took the time to button his vest back up later in between takes.
-
The art in this special is just terrible.
-
Holy crap, so this is what an Enies Lobby movie looks like…awesome. First off, that is how Gear 2nd should always be...the reanimated Jet Gatling my god that was awesome. The music was awesome and...the end of Merry gets me every single time.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
@Fisher:
Oh We can see Klaubertemann during timeskip
Which was very cool, but my only question is was that Sunny or…....possibly Merry?
-

I'll probably need to rewatch the second half.It was probably Onigumo, I saw him too along with Momonga. But no other VA.
Maybe in the Robin special~
-
No it was definitely spider hair himself Onigumo.
-
I was gonna watch this but then:
!
-
So when chopper shouts merry at the funeral there's no mouth movement and looks bad.. given all the bad looking parts as well. Think I'll give this a miss.
-
The years have not been kind to Aokiji, ever since he left the marines.
They should've casted a younger looking person to play his part in this special.
-
It wasn't a bad special. It recapped most of the Water 7 and Enies Lobby pretty well and I enjoyed the faster paced battles.
But the animation, just ugh. Disappearing facial features, off model and wonky designs, and some jerky animation (Especially during the Lucci fight. I know Luffy's rubber but I hate when they exaggerate it like that). It really killed some of the enjoyment for me. I also find it funny this was suppose to be Merry special and yet they rarely touched on some aspect like what battles it had been through and the crucial damage it had gotten in Jaya which ultimately broke it down later on. I also prefer some scenes from the regular anime over this one.
And then he apparently took the time to button his vest back up later in between takes.
He also seems to keep gaining and re-losing his sandals too. Just look at the scene where he beats Lucci. Seriously who was doing the editing on this special?
Still for what it is, it's alright. Better then Episode of Luffy at least.
-
They should've added the fight with chopper and that priest on the bird (Shura i think ?) Where chopper rips the mast off, or scenes where Usopp tries to repair it. And the scene where it gets punctured by Hina in Alabasta.
This was more the Cp9 special then anything else.
-
It wasn't bad, just unfinished. Let's hope BR version will look like it's supposed to.
So, what's for next year? Skypiea or Episode of Ace?
-
There is so much that can be said about this, as much as I enjoy the episodes it covered, the special was quite irrelevant. Completely unbalanced between a structured story and a quick recaps. Unless you've read/watched the arc a lot of it would make little sense. No coverage of Franky's important past, Usopp re-joining the crew.
They've messed up any chance of going over those character's important stories properly. It's nothing in comparison to the Episode of Nami special.@Dahaka.:

Both are good contenders, but I'm going to guess an episode of Skypiea.
! Toei loves to push specials which have relevance to events reflected the current arc.
-
I want an episode of Brooke.
Thriller Bark.
Laboon.
Feels.
Feels everywhere. -

What relevance does W7/EL have to PK ?

What's PK? He's talking about Skypeia beling relevant to Dressrosa.
-
i just don't know what to say about franky's speedo…
-
Next special will be the Episode of Caribou : Kehehehe in the New World
-
Wow, Chopper screams 'MERRY', everything but his mouth moves.
The second half really does drift between amazing to non-existent quality constantly. Key scenes to good animators, everything else to the Philippines, profit?
-
Can't think of a single scene I enjoyed more in the special than in the original episodes. Doesn't help that I despise Inoue and his stupid shiny ways. I don't watch the anime much any more but I decided to give this one a chance since the Nami special was okay and I heard they had Brand New World and Memories…
Even more depressing is the fact that this probably means we'll never get a Franky special, not that there was ever any hope of that anyway =cry=

here's a small keyboard diagram:

i meant PH, damn K being too close to H.
What relevance does Water 7 and Ennies Lobby have to Punk Hazard ? -
He was talking about Dressrosa…

I think what rktgx95 is trying to say is that you can't claim specials tend to be related to what's going on in the current arc only becuase nami's does when this one doesn't.

Oh, that's right, I apologize, I'm not getting enough sleep and I read it wrong xD. Yeah I agree with him, I don't think specials follow a special criteria, the next one could be anything: Sabaody, Skypiea, the war….

some of the luffy v. lucci fights looked spectacular.
oddly enough though…. i LIKE not being able to see luffy's arms in the gatling gun.i also like how when they were crying in the end.... their eyes didnt lok like somebody cracked open eggs on their eyes.
i liked luffy's goku-esque face when he stood back up. (<- see my avatar)
overall i really did like the special. and the shin models didnt bother me nearly as much as the inconsistent ones... like fat Usopp.
-
Was this really a Merry special? because it felt more like a compilation of fights with very little Merry coverage.
The special wasn't bad but it really felt rushed in so many ways. The fights were up there but not a single scene held more impact than the original. The voice acting was better in some parts and less emotional than the anime in others and what was it with Merry? When she was on sea she looked like she was flying.
Another thing was the song they put when Merry went to get them, it was too cheerful for the moment.
-
And that is why we need One Piece (2011). Or 2013 for that matter.
-

There is a trend though where they will produce these specials to coincide and make them more relevant, I have mixed feeling about it.
I'm only guessing that they will produce a special next year which is somewhat relevant, there has never been a self-contained episode of without hints towards the current arc.Episode of Alabasta's included scenes of Robin's past to link it with the Enies Lobby arc recent to that time.
Episode of Chopper, Franky included to coincide with the his recent joining to that time.
As for this special it felt like they pushing the Film Z home release, what with the Film Z outfits and advertisement, possibly further emphasis on Aokiji, he is pretty relevant in the arc regardless, but his DF power is pretty nasty in this special: -
I want an episode of Brooke.
Thriller Bark.
Laboon.
Feels.
Feels everywhere.Episode of Sanji with thy crying scene at the end :cwy:
-
I'll certainly take a Brook or Laboon special please!
And although I do think I was more of a puddle during the original, I was definitely still crying over the death of a ship here. And regardless of how weird that is, I never seem to much care. Plus that ending was just really nice, and I also loved that Brook got told about Merry. I'd really wished that he would have gotten this in the manga better, even if it was just a "Right, you never met Merry…" with a cut away explanation and then TEARS...and with Brook, maybe a song.... Weird that they were using the Z outfits (but Franky wasn't?) though, but I can't complain too much about that.
-
Wow its sad that the original animation was way better than this "special". Animation is half-assed and they cut off most of the good parts. Although Nami's special episode was amazing, this was a huge disappointment.

They had to cram 2+ arcs worth of content(both being longer than Arlongs) into an an hour and forty minutes, what did you expect? They captured the emotion where it needed to be captured. Franky and Usopp's heart to heart about Merry's condition, Jet Gatling, and the funeral were all beautifully executed; in my opinion at least. If you went into this expecting to see full fights, the Robin back story, and the train scene then you set yourself up for disappointment. My only criticism of this special is how they handled Luffy vs. Usopp. It had such an impact on me in both the manga and original anime adaption but I felt nothing this time around.
-
It's not really about the pacing (though that kinda sucked too). I agree that the art and direction was not even close to the level of some of the original scenes. And this is years and years later. For example Luffy and Usopp's argument on the ship which should have been a key scene for this special: Complete crap whereas the original is amazing and gets the tension across brilliantly.
-
The special is best described as being mostly-good video game cuts scenes strung together, I think. The scenes themselves work relatively well within-themselves, the manner in which they connect is simply not particularly clear. I think if the special had been 212 minutes instead of 106 the pacing actually would have been very good. The Rocketman stuff is entirely pointless and can be easily skipped, but I think building up to the Merry's uselessness would've been better, too. Another twenty minutes to precede Luffy versus Usopp would make the pacing work much better.
We've already established that Inoue was correcting the animation up through a day before the special aired, so I'm not really sure why we're continually harping on that symptom. It'd be more prudent to berate Toei Animation for providing the special with no real production schedule, which is the actual root of the symptoms.
