TBH, I thought this movie was quite terrible..
Hunter x Hunter II

How was it? She took them to their house how she was supposed to, where a trap was awaiting for them since Omokage wanted their eyes. Her "hunch", planned or not, ended up favoring Omokage; what she did by her own will was actually enjoying being with them.
And Gon realized she was a doll since their first meeting, which should become even more obvious after they learnt about the dolls and Omokage's ability, but Killua never did the 2+2.She wasn't stalking Gon or Killua: she happened upon Gon by chance. Which leads me to believe that she wasn't planning on trapping them, especially because even if she hadn't totally turned against Omokage until the end, she was likely already harboring resentment.
-
Predictable to the audience, maybe. But that's just because of conservation of detail. The only thing that suggested Retz had any relation to Omokage was her "hunch," which was also contradictory since it put her in opposition to Omokage.
Retz' eyes did a weird sparkle on their first meeting which showed something wrong about her, she also mentioned her older brother was a puppet maker. It was extremely foreshadowed that she had something to do with Omokage well before he was actually introduced.
Edit: I derped and didn't realize you were talking about how it wasn't predictable to Killue =/
-
Oh goodness, that movie was pure disappointment… I really expected something better..
Why did Omokage know Illumi well enough to make a doll of him? Aren't the Zoldycks supposed to be super mystical or something? How did he even know that Pairo is Kurapika's friend out of every Kurta villager? Why did Omokage even want Leorio's eyes? Why Leorio said three times "You can count on me!" only to receive a laughable beating in matter of seconds?
Why did Illumi's doll use his full set of abilities while the Ryodan dolls in the end didn't and ended up just trying to punch Hisoka? Why Omokage's nen ability was so broken? How can Kurapika just consider him as a Ryodan when he isn't? That way he could even beat Hisoka, since he's a former Ryodan member as well. Why did Omokage end up dying by a doll that has no battle abilities?Killua looked really really pathetic during all the movie.
Why.jpg -
If Omokage can make dolls of people that can contain their memories without needing to touch them or even talk to them or anything what the heck's the point of Pakunoda.
-

I can only assume Ilumi's doll was extracted from the Ilumi in Killua's mind, while Retz was using Omokage's eyes and analyzing him, especially given how one-note his doll was. The problem is, if it's that simple and fast, why bother joining the Spiders at all? Not to mention, he could have done dolls of the whole Zoldyck family, or even a freaking Netero doll.
The whole situation with Pairo is very contrived. My best guess is that Omokage fell in love with Pairo's looks and his dead eyes when they butchered the Kurita, looked inside his mind and saw Kurapika, then came across him by chance years later.

Has it ever been specifically stated that nen users are unable to change their ability once they come up with, and visualize one?
Or is that more for conjurors? If they come up with a crappy ability, what's stopping them from going back to the basics and starting from scratch?

To the best of my understanding, a Nen ability gradually takes shape as one develops it. In earlier stages what it can do is still variable: it can still change. But as one trains and focuses on it, the ability becomes set in stone (which isn't to mean that the user can't find other applications for it: Killua does). If one develops an ability they're unsatisfied with, they can't just start all over. They can start developing a new technique, sure, but every Hatsu that a person develops takes up some of their "Nen Memory." One's "Nen memory" tends to allow for only 1-3 fully developed Hatsu (3 being the max we've seen so far). But even with just 2 Hatsu, especially if one is in a category you're weak in, creating one could be at the expense of the other.

Movie- All I could think was:
! In the manga they wouldn't charge in without a plan to the enemy base
In the manga we would have gotten a couple of better dolls
In the manga Omokage's skills wouldn't have been so broken
In the manga we would have this arc after Gon and Killua had a little more experience and a fucking hatsu
In the manga Ritz story would have struck a chord, it should have been touching
In the manga the Full Ryodan wouldn't meet Kurapika and just "walk away"In the manga… we will never have this arc because of Hiatus x Hiatus

ROFL, really, thanks for trying to make some sense out of the mess that this movie was. Illumi's doll was indeed way too repeative. The thing that gets on my nerves is that Killua's hesitating at strong enemies is a extremely important plot point that is raised and resolved at Chimera Ant arc. And in the movie it was abused so badly, that made Killua look just pathetic.
-

from what I can tell the dolls only act according to the memories of whomever they were extracted from. So the Illumi doll wouldn't know anything that Killua didn't know about him. And the dolls kept some semblance of free will so even if a doll was made of them they wouldn't just divulge any sensitive information.

This bugs me so damn much. I'm currently watching the Anime with my GF whom read the manga, and this plot point has been thrown so much at her from both this movie and the anime that it just makes Killua look like a piece of shit. I just want the anime to catch up to the point where he removes the nen needle already.

I think this screenshot sums up the movie pretty well:

Damn I'm like 20% through downloading the movie but this thread has destroyed all motivation to watch this film.
On a more positive note the King is finally going to be born today!

On a more positive note the King is finally going to be born today!
He was and it was great. He has a rather subtle voice though, so if you were expecting something overbearing, it'll be more elegant instead.
Did they show the King stabbing a kid and eating her brains?
! Yes, pretty much. The effect was subdued, thankfully, so you didn't hear the impact of his tail or anything though. They showed it, but conservatively.
Now Gon has to shoulder that he's weak in his mind along with the knowledge that Kite is out there with his arm sliced off (he thinks, anyway). This arc.

I got the feeling maybe there was a tv edit there. The way it suddenly cut away seemed slightly off.

Haha. Yea, the movie was terrible. I specially hated how out of character some Killua and the Phantom troupe were portrayed.

Kind of an odd thing to say, but I always thought the kid Meryem killed was a boy. Just goes to show for Togashi's art, am I right?
But yeah, I fucking despise that scene.
-
Neferpitou B*TCH SLAP! God that was an awesome episode, gave me the shivers and made me shout at the screen "NOOOO TOGASHI, NOOO, YOU CAN'T DO THAT YOU BASTARD!!!" even though I had already read the manga. Goddamn. Sugee.
-
Very good episode. Didn't notice that Yupi has Akainu's voice. Also didn't remember the King being so ruthless at first.

Obviously Togashi has something to do with it, that also explains why we only got 2 special chapters this year.

Akainu, Gendo Ikari, Hasegawa.

Anyone know the name of the music that played during the part where the king ate the villagers? It's beautiful. I love this arc <3
I can't believe they showed the fear in that kid's face leading up to her demise :(I think if I had to pick a top 5 arcs from shonen manga (keep in mind I don't read much manga :p) I read it'd look something like this
1. Chimera Ant arc
2. Rescue Sasuke arc (this might be interchangeable with CA for the number one spot. I adored Naruto when it was good, I've never seen a grudge fight like Naruto vs. Sasuke, and I loved the comraderie between the Konoha boys on this mission)
3. Yorkshin Auction arc
4 and 5. One Piece's CP9 and Paramount War story arcs. Can't decide which one I look more out of these twoEDIT: Wait I completely forgot about my favorite YuYuHakusho arcs…..

Alright at this point it seems all you guys are doing is accumulating the negatives of the movie. While it did have flaws a lot of the stuff you guys are complaining about was explained in the film. How did Omakage make a doll of Illumi? They say he can make dolls from other peoples memories. That's why he has Ritz and her doll follow them.
Why would the Phantom Troupe just let Kurapika walk away? The same reason they left Gon and Killua alone during the Greed Island prelude. If they kill Kurapika their boss will die as well because of the Men chain placed in him and the whole journey and effort to have Hisoka find an exorcist would have been wasted.
The only real problebm I had was how broken Omokage's powers were and even that was made up by the fact that he was an interesting villian that's probably the most anti villian of the troupe so far even seemingly feeling bad for the Kurta Massacre enough to try and bring one back to life. (Actually I haven't even seen any discussion at all on these pages about Omokage as a character so far besides my own post)
I know we waited a long time for the movie and its more fun to be negative rather than talk about how glorious something is for some reason but complaining without any logic behind it or about things explained in film is really bothersome.
-
I haven't seen the movie yet. It's canon right?
-
No it is a movie.
-
How did Omakage make a doll of Illumi? They say he can make dolls from other peoples memories. That's why he has Ritz and her doll follow them.
Alright, i'll admit that it was explained. And how does that make his ability plausible and or not ridiculous? He could easily create a Silva or a Xeno doll. How about Kurapika considering Omokage a Spider, when he isn't? How does that make sense?
I know we waited a long time for the movie and its more fun to be negative rather than talk about how glorious something is for some reason but complaining without any logic behind it or about things explained in film is really bothersome.
Believe me, it's not any fun at all, i wish i could write a post with positive things, like i can for Madhouse's adaptation or the Chimera ant arc in general, but that movie was just that bad. And i don't think anyone complained about the movie without any logic behind it.
-
No it is a movie.
This is why I usually don't watch anime movies based on manga. If it's not canon I'm usually not interested. I thought that this WAS canon though and Togashi helped write it and that was half of it's appeal? Like it explains the story behind the spider Hisoka replaced and elaborates on the Kurta clan massacre?
-

We actually discussed and explained everything that could be explained, like that. Which doesn't make it any better though, just shows how broken Omokage was, and yet how poorly he made use of his power.
They don't have a score to settle with Gon and Killua they way they have with Kurapika. So yes, they did let it go very easily, even if they wouldn't kill him for now.
The only real problebm I had was how broken Omokage's powers were and even that was made up by the fact that he was an interesting villian that's probably the most anti villian of the troupe so far even seemingly feeling bad for the Kurta Massacre enough to try and bring one back to life.
Why was he interesting? He didn't make a Pairo doll because he felt "bad" for the massacre, that was never said. The only reason the movie gave was that he found Pairo beautiful, that's it. Heck, they made it clear that even his sister was brought back as a doll purely for personal satisfaction.
I know we waited a long time for the movie and its more fun to be negative rather than talk about how glorious something is for some reason but complaining without any logic behind it or about things explained in film is really bothersome.
Most criticisms are about the many dumb things that happened in this movie, like Killua acting stupid, repetitive and annoying, or everything maxterdexter said and you quoted. In fact, i actually tried to explain even things that are not explained at all. It's the movie that is very devoid of logic, not the complaints.
-
Let's all start respecting the people who want to see the movie, and use the damn spoiler tags.
! Ok, The Nen jail worked, I can get that, because it is very easy to consider him a valid target of Kurapika, (Spider Tatoo, never officialy left the spiders, part of the massacre) I can get that the dolls could still work with him in a zetsu state, each of them have their own source of nen, but how did he absorb the Spider's last three? and then how did he used them after the fact, that's an active aplication of nen, while under the chain.
! And why to take another look at Killua's issue, specialy as it isn't something that internal, but reinforced by a nen needle.
! I was also annoyed by jealous Killua, but that's in character, I think.
! And why not screw "cannon" and give us RPS Gon and Electric Killua, Hell even Far Punch Leorio would have been better than the 3 running around doing shit. -
I haven't seen the movie yet. It's canon right?
As I also said pages ago the movie is Canon and it fits neatly between York New and Greed Island. Togashi was apart of the production of the movie for goodness sake. I'm sorry if I seem like a jerk here but its tiresome repeating information that was said pages ago especially when other posters seem ignorant to this as well.

"Neatly"… Like hell it does.
From september 4th when Kurapika gets sick to september 10th when they get into the game. Manga chapter titles can certify this.
Six days. Where everybody had things to do. Kurapika recovered the 7th. So, are you telling me that he went away, got the Pocle or whatever call the same day.
In the movie there were 4 nights since we see Gon and Killua (the blimp, the hotel, the mansion, and the castle), and Kurapika was unconcious for 3 days before that.
Even if I'm confused and the mansion and the castle were at the same night (that I think they do), that leaves 6 days, where Kurapika was in the "redemption fever"
! and also eyeless.
Unless Gon and Killua spended ALL offcamera moments training the Janken Rock and the electricity thingie, it doesn't fit.
Then the spiders, they were already inside the game.
-
The movie isn't canon. The flashback with Kurapika and Pairo is canon though.
-
maybe it's like the latest one piece movies with that Z character and flying lion, both exist in the universe, but the plot of both movies isn't canon, unless that's one of these things that has never been confirmed either.
-

Yeah, the movie is like the One Piece movies Oda was involved with. They're semi-canon. Togashi wrote the special chapter which was the flashback with Pairo. So that's canon. He probably did the designs for Omakage/Retz and gave an outline for the movie. But the movie itself isn't canon since it would have to take place after York Shin and before Greed Island but the events in the movie contradict with the events from the manga.

So… Togashi is trolling through movies now huh?
So many plot holes, everyone was so useless, wasted characters... I can't believe I watched ALL of that...Fuck you Togashi.
-
Why blame Togashi it's not like he made the entire movie. The best thing to come out from this movie were the two chapters Togashi did showing Kuraapica's past.
-
A film based on a shonen manga not being very good? Well I never.
-
Why, it's as if this movie was an average movie-based-on-an-anime-based-on-a-manga.
-
Why blame Togashi it's not like he made the entire movie. The best thing to come out from this movie were the two chapters Togashi did showing Kuraapica's past.
He can keep those two chapters. New chapters that raise new questions are pointless when Togashi remains on hiatus. Sticking it to Jump is one thing, but I can't believe he okayed this shitty cash grab.
-
Why would he turn down easy money and advertising?
-
It's not as if it's a black mark on his record. It could have been a lot better, sure, but I don't even think it was bad. It was just standard shonen movie stuff.
-
What's he name of the track that plays when Gon is getting pummeled by Genthru, trying to provoke him into getting serious?
-
I know everybody loves the picture of Gon waving but this is the ultimate in the Togashi scribbles for me
Intensely detailed turkey
and then everything else
-
Well I think the main thing shown with the Gon handwaving is that, unlike other instances where Togashi has gone back to revise his scribbles, he ended up leaving Gon that way in the volume release as a counter to the argument that "Well Togashi uses his time to release it in better quality later!"
Did that turkey page end up exactly the same in the volumes, though?

I always feel like printing that page out and hanging it up on the wall for eternal amusement, but keep forgetting. I should get a super ornate frame for it.

So the birth of the Chimera Ant King was really cool, they did a good job showing off his terrifying power in this episode and it was a really interesting one because of that as well. I'm really excited for the next episode because it has a few scenes I've really wanted to see animated "I will protect this child…" and each episode inches us closer to the Phantom Rouge's villain episode chapters as well. So excited!

Just save yourself the trouble and nail a cooked turkey to the wall.

Now I feel that it could be a nice modern art piece: a turkey nailed to a wall and "TOGASHI WHY" violently scratched in underneath with a knife. It would be approaching death threat levels with that way that looks though.
