Oh yes they do. Toonami said that's why Naruto is only one episode a week.
Care to link to that comment please?
-
They… don't have to pay every time they air it. The license itself cost CN money, not the number of time slots.
They do have to pay each time a episode airs, Toonami's Tumblr confirmed that a few weeks ago, like Monogatari said. I don't have a link
But yeah, One Piece season 4 is like the perfect humor and a perfect casting point. When Toonami started back in May again, a lot of new folks who haven't watched Adult Swim in years tuned and got used to it.
-
I would start the series from the beginning so that new fans can enjoy the show. I mean Naruto is airing from the beginning, so it shouldn't be a problem with One Piece to begin at the beginning.
-
As much as I hate to say this, I think its best if they start from the very beggining. Remember 4Kids skipped some crucial arcs that need to be shown for the series to make sense later on.
-
It makes most sense to re air from the beginning with FUNI's new dub. However, it starts slowly… but by the Arlong Arc it will pick up a lot!
-
Hey guys. I'm not a Mod, so you don't actually HAVE To listen to me and stuff and junk…
But...
This is the FUNi DVD thread... can we like, do the TV airing talk... in the TV thread plz? Between this thread, the ACTUAL "FUNi TV thread", The "One Piece Back on USA TV on Toonami" thread someone made in the general anime section, and the General "Toonami" thread in Media... We have 4 different threads all talking about the same issue... and it's getting confusing... -
You mean there are other threads outside of this one? Cool story, lady.
-
I mean we're discussing the same topic ("Toonami got FUNi One Piece!") in 4 separate threads at exactly the same time… kinda feels redundant. Especially because this is the only thread that isn't relevant to that discussion... being the DVD thread and all...
-
You mean there are other threads outside of this one? Cool story, lady.
Hey! Dont be like that. She just said that this is the DVD thread. There are 3 other threads where you can talk about One Piece coming to Toonami.
-
Oh, no. I meant because I only really post in this thread. It was a joke.
But yeah, I'll move my side of the convo.
-
Oh! Sorry Then.
I hope the sales for the DVD's skyrockets after this!
-
Great news!!!!! HELL YEAH.
-
Mike just updated on the recap episodes.
They shall be treated like any other episode. No skipping. There's a tiny bit of new content in them. And thanks!

I am really relieved about that. I would have hated it if they had skipped it even if it is just recaps and it will take up a lot of the set. Now I just wonder, what will the opening/closing be on the episodes. I wonder if they will they have the We Are ~ Strawhat Version, and if it will be dubbed or not, or whether they will just extend Brand New World. The mind boggles.

Good, no need for that 4kids messy idea of skipping. And not trying to make a convo, but another good reason Toonami should just start with season 4, recap episodes could catch people up.

Oh how nice of him. I squeal with ecstatic joy knowing that I'm paying for a DVD set that has 5 episodes of content that is already spread out in my other DVD's, all because there's 3 minutes from each of those episodes featuring Strawhat Theater. And of course I'll be buying it because there's 8 episodes I actually WANT to see dubbed.
So nice. Since 38% of the content is literally from other DVD's, I can safely assume RightStuf will sell it at 38% off their sale price, thus making that particular boxset $14.88? No? I'll be paying $23.99 like the others, or the retail price of $50? S' that so? I see.

Well. There's also the We Are Straw Hat edition you'll get to see dubbed (hopefully), and I believe there's a little bit of content with them standing on the top of the building.

Eight episodes? No. More like seven or six. Almost half the set is going to be recaps with funky borders. You're exaggerating a bit, though. Retail for these is $40. We'll only be paying 23$.
As Mike said, there are a few minutes on the episodes which are actual content. We'll get about five minutes per episode of new footage, if they include strawhat theater. I said 'oh darn' when he told me. I was hoping they'd make it a huge set to make up for it, but he didnt say anything about that.
-
There are only 5 recaps by the way.
Forgot to mention the "Family" ending too.
-
Uuuuuuuuuuuugh…..... Don't like that Idea at all.... There's a reason the Japanese DVDs skipped that material..................
Oh goody, now I have to pay Full price of only half a boxed set. Beautiful...
-
Just curious, but wasn't it in one of those recap episodes where a certain "judgmental" character was revealed to not be all he seemed? Because for some reason I remember skipping those episodes and went straight on to the "continuing" episodes. But when I decided to watch them for the hell of it, I noticed the "revelation" and thought, "How did I miss that?". Again, it could be my memory screwing w/ me since I haven't watched Enies Lobby in years.

@Galaxy:

Our numbering was of the cannon episodes, not the recaps. We know there are five recaps. We don't know how many other episodes will be on that particular set.

I feel the same. I wish they'd just make it a slightly larger set.

@Galaxy:
! If you mean Baskerville.., that's unveiled in Episode 284.
I see. So it takes place after the 5 episode recap. It's strange that I mixed up what took place when, but thanks for the clarification. Though tbh, I think having some canon stuff happening before or even after the flashbacks of these episodes would've at least given some more reason to they're being on the set. As it is, they're pretty much inconsequential. It would've been better if for this set they decided to make a "special features disc" to go w/ this set where the recap episodes and the Omakes could've been housed on a 3rd disc. Wishful thinking, I know…but oh well.
-
Nah, the recap episodes are regular episodes like the rest. Regardless of being the worst form of cheap-o filler a TV series can have, they should be part of the main episode order. Same thing with the 2 "special" recap episodes 200 episodes later.
I agree with Zephray that the best way to handle it would have been to add another disc to the set with an extra 5 or 6 episodes, since the recap episodes really are for diehards and completists only.
-
Five or six? Nah. 3 would be enough for me.
-
Hmmm…I wonder if we'll get Future Voyage as the proper closing (when we get to that point), since this is a TV airing, and TV Japan got to see it....
Then again, the ending and/or opening sequences may be shortened anyway.
-
A 15 episode set would make me happy.
-
I agree with the notion of adding an extra 5 or 6 episodes to the box set, it would absolutely drive me crazy if I had to have episodes that I'm never going to watch on their taking up space. just like that seahorse filler arc, and I absolutely pains me that I had to buy it, but because it had Canon episodes in it I had no choice. Plus I didn't want screw over FUNimation over that, since they have no control over that whatsoever.
Yeah, at least adding another couple of episodes or something would be nice, probably not going to happen but it's nice to dream. It's funny but I can't help but b**** about this now even though it's not even close yet.
Edit: it is going to be very annoying when viz Media gets to the part of Naruto where they had 3 months of filler to work through before they get to Naruto's personal blackout moment.
-
Adding six to make up for five recap episodes? That's crazy. Lets be fair and count the recap/theater for what they're worth. About two episodes. Meaning we should get 3 more. A 15 episode set.
-
A 15 episode boxset isn't going to happen, it would screw up the rest of the season and it would have an 9 episode boxset. There just not enough episodes in the season.
-
I really don't see why people are suprised they aren't skipping the recap episodes. It's really not that big of a deal, considering how cheap this sets are compared to what they used to be.
Anyways, I had to pinch myself again today to make sure I wasn't dreaming. I'm so glad we're finally back on the air!!!
-
@Galaxy:
Well. There's also the We Are Straw Hat edition you'll get to see dubbed (hopefully), and I believe there's a little bit of content with them standing on the top of the building.
Indeed. 2 minutes of song, + 2 minutes of variations of them standing on the building, + 3 minutes of Strawhat theater = 7 minutes * 5 episodes = 35 minutes of fresh content! OH THE JEEBUS BE PRAISED!
I know you're trying to show me the bright side of it, it's not like I don't want these things…I just would rather not get these recaps that I've already paid for. It's borderline double-dipping.
@Mr.:
Nah, the recap episodes are regular episodes like the rest. Regardless of being the worst form of cheap-o filler a TV series can have, they should be part of the main episode order. Same thing with the 2 "special" recap episodes 200 episodes later.
That is your opinion and definitely not mine. The recap episodes feature little content and variations of Kokoro telling the Strawhats to jump off the building. Blech.
Even if the seahorse arc was just filler, at least it was original content. This stuff isn't original, we already have it in the Voyages and Collections. And the Robin recap literally happens in the previous voyage.
I really don't see why people are suprised they aren't skipping the recap episodes.
Because those of us who have been buying the voyages and collections all this time already have this content.
It's really not that big of a deal, considering how cheap this sets are compared to what they used to be.
I would disagree as it's borderline double dipping. Why am I paying the same amount for 38% less content?
Let me just thank everyone for not going the route of "Hurr durr if you don't like it then don't buy it". I'm glad most folks on here realize that including these recaps is weird. There are episodes I DO want to watch on this set. Those 5 recaps are not part of that "want-to-watch" part of the voyage.
I suggested this as an idea earlier. I suppose I could just throw this at Mike anyway even though I'll be told "no". Never hurts to just get it out there.
You know what would be better? If they instead did this (though I sincerely doubt it):
S5V1: 264-274 (11 episodes)
S5V2: 275-278, 284-290, 293-294 (13 episodes)
S5V3: 295-302, 304-309 (12 episodes)
S5V4: 310-322 (13 episodes)
S5V5: 323-335 (13 episodes)Instead of S5V6, a Strawhat Special Collection: Specials 1-4, Episodes 291, 292, 303, and 336, the Strawhat Theater segments. In an even more perfect world, they'd get the rights to dub that really early pilot featuring Luffy, Zoro, and Nami that was released in '98 (I think?) and include that. Bam, all the specials are taken care of and everything except the movies up to this point have been dubbed.
I doubt this will happen but it'd be really nice to see Funimation keep the specials separate as they really ruined the flow of the Enies Lobby arc.
-
…Portuguese, it comes from "Sabao" which means "Bubble".
Nope. Sabão means soap. Bubble in Portuguese is 'Bolha'.
(Native Portuguese speaker here, so I should know)
-
It won't happen. And its bad idea to have episodes out of order and stuff.
This how I think Season 5 will go.
S5V1: 264 - 276 (13 episodes)
S5V2: 277 - 288 (12 episodes)
S5V3: 289 - 300 (12 episodes)
S5V4: 301 - 312 (12 episodes)
S5V5: 313 - 324 (12 episodes)
S5V6: 325 - 336 (12 episodes) -

(Native Portuguese speaker here, so I should know)
Sorry, my mistake. It's the other way then. Japan stole the word and used it to mean "Bubble" in Japanese.
But since we have a native Portuguese speaker, a question. How would one pronounce "Sabaody" if they were doing it with proper Portuguese pronunciation?
Also, at least have the Marathon feature skip those episodes or something… ugh...
-
I… don't really know how to explain portuguese pronunciation but I'll give it a go.
Sa is pronounced like the Sa in the FUNimation-botched pronunciation of Saiyan.
bão is pronounced... actually, got no idea how to even explain that.So I'll just let Ami Mizuno from our godawful dub of Sailor Moon do it for me (she's saying "espuma de sabão, espalha-te"):
-
I'm still wondering why anyone would expect the We Are Straw Hat Version to be dubbed. I mean yeah the original We Are was dubbed at the beginning and it's the same lyrics but it's still new singers and new instrumentals. Toei would have to send a karaoke track to FUNimation to get the SHs to sing, which won't happen as long as things stay the way they have for the entirety of Season 4.
-
its bad idea to have episodes out of order and stuff.
Indeed, because nothing says "EFF YEAH ENIES LOBBY PACING" like LUFFY THE DETECTIVE WHO HOLDS WEAPONS FOR SOME REASON.
If "We Are" in the recaps isn't dubbed I will laugh. All the more proving the point that these episodes should be skipped entirely. All it takes is a notice screen like they've been doing for the dub, basically saying:
"Episodes 279-283 are recaps of each of the Strawhats backstories. Because we're cool and won't double-dip our customers, we're skipping those episodes. The "Strawhat Theater" shorts that aired as part of these episodes are available to watch as a separate "episode" on this boxed set."
-
@GrizzlayLeslay I understand you're upset about the recap episodes but again, it isn't that huge of a deal, it's just 6 episodes. I bought over 3/4 of the voyages as well as ALL of the Collection sets (it cost a fortune, but it was certainly worth it) and I'll still buy the set with the recap episodes.
I mean, nobody's forcing you to buy the set or anything, but think of it this way, you're supporting the franchise, and in turn, when you support the franchise, you get more episodes.
Anyways, Toonami's response saying "We're not sure where we'll start on the episode count" has me intrigued. I wonder if it's possible for Toei to make a recap movie/episode kind of like they're doing for the upcoming Brazilian re-dub. That would be interesting.
And on another note, aren't brodcasting rights, streaming rights and home video rights completely different entities. I wonder if it's alright for the OP/ED dubbed for brodcast airings, but not streaming and home video, for some odd reason. It was apprently all right for TV Japan to air "Future Voyage" in it's entirety, like you guys said earlier, so…
So many questions...
-
Or they could just put the Mugiwara Theater shorts in as bonus features cuz…I guess that's kinda what they are.
With Toonami I'm sure it'll follow the same guidelines as their previous shows, the opening and closing credit themes will be shortened due to time constraints, with no next episode previews.
They should start at the beginning, though. It only makes sense, introduce new viewers to everything.
Edit: OR! They could just start at Season 5 becuz we have RECAP EPISODEZ CUMIN G UP!!!!!1111111
-
However they split up the season I hope they don't skip any episodes. The completest in me would go nuts if anything was missing however slight. Can always hit skip chapter on the ole dvd player.
-

I don't think that's necessary. When One Piece was on Toonami back in 2007, they didn't shortened any of the themes and kept the previews intact.
-
They could EASILY just give us one set with a few extra episodes. on the low side, 2, on the up side, 5. So it has just a few extra episodes to offset the sting of buying 5 episodes you BASICALLY ALREADY HAVE.
Sano did a breakdown of one potential orientation of the boxes.
S5V1: 264 - 276 (13 episodes)
S5V2: 277 - 288 (12 episodes)
S5V3: 289 - 300 (12 episodes)
S5V4: 301 - 312 (12 episodes)
S5V5: 313 - 324 (12 episodes)
S5V6: 325 - 336 (12 episodes)Now watch this:
S5V1: 264 - 276 (12 episodes)
S5V2: 276 - 290 (15 episodes)
S5V3: 291 - 301 (11 episodes)
S5V4: 302 - 312 (11 episodes)
S5V5: 313 - 324 (12 episodes)
S5V6: 325 - 336 (12 episodes)BAM!
They do this, everything works. The last two Season 4 boxed sets only had 11 episodes, so it's not like this is a NEW concept and that set only has ONE episode more than the current record holders for biggest Voyage, Season 1 Voyage 4 & Season 2 Voyage 6*. Yet, if you count ONLY the new episodes and discount the recaps, you have 10, which is the same amount as Season 3 Voyage 3. That way, everyone is happy. The episodes stay in sequence, yet, the people who don't like those recap episodes don't have to feel ripped off.
And don't tell me they can't afford to do this. I'm P-O-S-I-T-I-V-E that those 5 episodes can NOT possibly cost nearly as much as dubbing an entire episode fresh from the ground up even if there is a little new content.
Hell, I'd even take making that a 14 episode set and just making just one an 11. It's not quite what I'd prefer, but it's better than nothing.
But, let me just say, if FUNi doesn't go that route at all, and just pretty much evenly distributes the episodes across the season (A-la Sano's unedited list) then we'll have 1 13 episode set and the rest be 12s,'
Voyage 2 had BETTER Be the 13.
*Thank You Sano for the correction. See post below this one.
-
You forgot Season 2, Part 6 got 14 episodes.
-
Regardless of the cost, it doesn't seem likely that FUNi would put more episodes in a set just so we get just as much new content as we would any other box set. I'd love to be proven wrong though.
I don't think that's necessary. When One Piece was on Toonami back in 2007, they didn't shortened any of the themes and kept the previews intact.
That is true. But seeing how all of their shows that have aired in the last 3 years have followed those guidelines, and the fact that the previews in Naruto are no longer present, when they were when those episodes first aired, lead me to believe One Piece will follow the same format. But I'll be fine with whatever they do; we're there just to see the actual story after all.
-

with that in mind, what hope is there for dear friends being dubbed? because pretty much at this point, its the only song i need dubbed. itll be pretty off putting to hear japanese vocals, given that we have had another insert song (which name i had forgotten, but its ed1)in english during the alabasta arc. not to mention, the song is relevant to the plot.
-
@GrizzlayLeslay I understand you're upset about the recap episodes but again, it isn't that huge of a deal, it's just 6 episodes.
5 episodes (279-283), but I'm not making a mountain out of a molehill, because it isn't a molehill. It's a big ol pile of steamy smelly lameness.
I don't agree with the "no one's making you buy it" mentality. There are 8 episodes I WANT to watch that will inevitably be part of that set, because those episodes are not recaps. But the other 5, in one form or another already exist on the voyages and the collections. Is it not gouging to have Robin's flashback on Season 5 First Voyage, and then have the exact same animation on the Second Voyage?
I have supported all legal means of purchasing One Piece since Funimation got their hands on it (and also when Viz did their speedup). However I also believe in getting your money's worth out of what you invest in (I have every voyage up to S2V4, Collections 5-8 after that). Including 279-283 for the sake of 3 minutes of Strawhat Theater is moreso gouging than it is about Funimation being completionists. For how wonderful they've been in dubbing the entire series, and negotiating for years to get us Seasons 4 and 5, this feels like a misstep. That's how I see it, anyway.
Or they could just put the Mugiwara Theater shorts in as bonus features cuz…I guess that's kinda what they are.
That's exactly what they are. That and the Strawhat version of We Are! were the only reasons for longtime fans to watch it.
However they split up the season I hope they don't skip any episodes. The completest in me would go nuts if anything was missing however slight. Can always hit skip chapter on the ole dvd player.
I welcome you to go watch 279-283 and tell me how it would put you in a coma if Funimation didn't include it. Seriously, go watch them. Right now. Marathon it. I want to believe there's one person out there who would actually lose their minds if these recaps weren't included.
Skipping the episodes is a given, but that doesn't excuse double-dipping.
