Just learned that SJA is no longer just renting the issues. They're for keeps now. Pretty sweet.

Kudos next week when SJA catches up to simultaneous release. Never thought this (SJA in general) could happen. It's cool how far they've gone.

Extremely relieved about this. SJA is finally serious business after a semi-successful year. It's now officially a bargain and well worth it. Hell, the Yu-Gi-Oh! cards more than pay for one year's subscription of 25.99. This past year, an exclusive Slifer the Sky Dragon was sent in the mail to subscribers and is somehow worth triple digits on Amazon and Ebay. If you don't like collecting the cards, just sell em and you can buy years worth of manga

! Or, if you're a fanboy of yugioh, you will cherish one of the most valuable trading cards in existence….I freakin love my Slifer. It's gorgeous :wub:

So I emailed Viz and they told me that Zolo was nothing for consistency or due to the anime.

It was supposedly due to the existence of Zorro comics in America.

I mean that is a weak response as Zoro's character and likeness is nothing like that of Zorro.

I mean the name is similar, but that is not copyright infringement is it?

Its always better to play it safe. Same reason why Pokemon can never be called pocket monsters in the states (due to the similar "monster in my pocket" franchise) and why detective Conan can't be used here in the states because of a similar named Conan the barbarian.

Better safe then lawsuits i always say.

According to the wiki:

Zorro's debut was in august 6,1919.

It's actually more complicated than that, it's either the date of publication + 95/120 years OR the life of the author + 70 years. There are also a ton of variables, since Zorro may also be trademarked, in which case the company that owns it can keep that going indefinitely, so long as it's in use.

But would that really be it? I mean the anime seems to have no trouble doing it. Unless the rules are different from media to media.

On a side note: didn't Disney extend their rights to keep their classics such as Mickey mouse from entering public domain?

I really wish they would have called the last few volumes Fishman Island instead of New World. I hope they at least change it to Punk Hazard when the arc starts.

I don't get why this matters so much. They're in the New World. It works. While the different colors that came with the arc names were nice, I can live without them.

Disney has historically been the leading entity in the push to keep public domain at bay (the Copyright Term Extension Act was also called the "Mickey Mouse Protection Act"). They have a VERY powerful lobby for this kind of thing.

I checked out this manga before but never really thought much of it. But, now that Viz is going to translate this, I looked into it more. Yusuke Murata, the artist that did Eyeshield21!? Sweet, I'm going to look forward to this a lot!! =D I love his style of drawing.

Well for one thing, Assassination CLassroom is a gag manga, so it has a lot of difficult to translate jokes. It's also incredibly japanese in that they probably don't feel it'll appeal anywhere near as well to AMerican audiences (which is probably true for the most part). I've also heard Stephen talk about how it might be too adult for the image SJA is trying to set for itself

One Punch Man is appearently NOT going to be the only new series. ALso it seems SJA is getting it's name changed to weekly shonen jump, matching the japanese magazine name

Hopefully, the next announced new series will be Beelzebub. I really enjoyed the anime of it and I would like to see the manga gets an u.s release.

Beelzebub's anime was awful compared to the manga, so I'd really recommend you start reading the manga even if it doesn't get an official release

Gintama is pretty likely…it was part of the print for a few months. I see it replacing Bleach as part of the "Big Four"

Gintama was dropped for lackluster sells if i remember right. Not one manga that has done poorly (and dropped) on viz's releases has made a comeback.

I think it had just as much to do with difficulty of translating, since I don't think Gintama sold that poorly

Did VIZ specify that they're going the Nisekoi route and aquire other current JUMP titles? When they said "we'll be bringing more new series" I think they meant that any new series added to the Japanese JUMP from here on out is fair game for them to translate.

Alexis strongly implied that OPM "wasn't the only thing" and that there was more new stuff to announce very soon. I'm guessing they will probably reveal more upcoming details next week when the countdown ends? I don't think they would have teased it that way if the idea was "oh we'll add more series…in the future once our current titles bomb out."

unfortunately the manga doesn't have a bright future here as far as official releases go here. and as far as the anime goes: well…..sentai has only released half of the episodes they have acquired and a movie,but they haven't really said anything since.

Honestly, OPM is the best manga I read last year. It's comedy gold. A work of genius.

I was honestly surprised that Viz got the license for it. I couldn't be happier really, I bought the first 2 volumes from Japan(I read through scanlations before of course) but now I will be the able to import it in English if they release the physical volumes of it. Of course, it must have a demand for them to release it….

But heck, this WILL be famous. It's awesome after all.

EDIT: Also, that only shows the sales of Diamond comics and like it states "Being that this is Diamond, there are several qualifying factors, including that a lot of book stores and online outlets don't get their manga from Diamond, and that it's their definition of "manga,"".

I honestly doubt it. One piece does indeed sell well,but not that well.
