Keep in mind that Berserk the Manga is serialized in Young Animal, which apparently features smears of manga in between softcore porn spreads. Miura's work is extremely graphic, gory, and choppy (by which I mean, heads will roll); the Berserk anime didn't show this. Most shots of people getting sliced 'n diced had "blood squirts" and falling armour; no battered brains, gushing guts, swords dripping with blood and feces (from slicing through an enemy's large intestine)…what I'm getting at is that the Anime was toned down, with the approval of Miura, so that it could reach a larger audience without offending people or knocking the heads of censors together.
I'm well aware of that. And thus it was never my problem with the anime.
I don't like how they put in filler (and ommitted a possible episode) when there was plenty of plot they could still have used.
They could have added the bakiraka battle, as it was massively cool. And dosen't (unlike Silat) leave any open ends.
And most of all they could have actually shown a resolution to the Eclipse.
One minute Gutts is screaming in rage as Femto rapes Casca, then next thing we know, Gutts is leaving Godo's house looking mad.
Skull Knight or not, they had some splainin to do.
They also never explained the Godhand in any way shape or form.
While it mostly works on its own as a story. Every last person who has seen the anime and not the manga, hates the ending.
It confuses them, and seems hella random.
The molestation scene was thankfully edited out for taste reasons.
Molestation? Eh, thats full fledged rape..
And it could have been left in, yet tastefully suggested.
Donovan appears in Gutt's tent, Gutts freaks out, Donovan lunges at him
- Next scene: Donovan leaves the tent at morning, Gutts is inside looking traumatized*
See, its all in how you show it.
It was a very important character trait for Gutts. It really deepens his character.
The edited comedy is likely to solidify the series as an action/drama; what makes the comedy in Berserk especially funny is that its a justaposition of two clashing formulae. It's "comic relief" in the manga, and it only works so well because it's somewhat random, exaggerated, and totally unforseen; such comedy would be wasted on an Anime that was focusing only on a small part of Guts' life, and notably a part with the least comedy.
Alot of the comedy I found to be very….human.
Yes its a drama, but part of real life is funny too.
Seeing the hawks goofing around, Gutts slapping Casca on the butt, Pippin looming up in Gutt's face and saying in a big voice "DRINK".
Casca hopping on the horse after having sex with Gutts and making an "OWWW" face.
All real funny moments that really made the series for me.
They made it more real.
The only thing that could have improved the Anime as it was intended was to add an extra episode and remove the Adon filler in place of Wyald the Apostle. I mean, Zodd appeared in only one episode, so why couldn't Wyald?
I'm actually not sure about that ironically.
Even in the manga I thought Wyald was a little forced (though I loved the resolution) but it sure as hell wouldv'e beaten the Adon filler.
