On Long Island, "storm protection" translates to "piles of sand and the homes of rich people"
Alright whose going to be underwater for the next few days

Yeah, but you gotta understand the difference in location. Living Florida, majority of structures and buildings are made and built to be able to better handle hurricanes. Granted, destruction happens, but preparations are made with buildings for minimal destruction and, more importantly, safety for those taking shelter. The Southeast is built to be prepared for hurricanes. The Northeast is not. I'm not saying that there is going to be mass destruction and anarchy, but people in the Northeast are not as experienced nor are the homes as well prepared.
Granted, we're not talking a Level 4 or Level 5 hurricane (I've lived through both). It's a Level 1 from what I understand, but we're talking about a big storm non-the-less in an area not built for such a storm.
I understand but, i work in pharmacy inside a retail location and the amount of panic i saw was just stupid. Maybe if it was only like this once we get a hurricane i could understand but it's like this anytime any big storm is supposed to hit or guaranteed the first snow of the year, every year. I mean my area has some places that are prone to flooding and probably will get flood but that majority of ppl will just get a day off from work. People up here just lose it when it comes to weather

Let's give it up for Hurricane Sandy, people!
But clap slowly! 'Cause remember, SHE'S A SQUIRREL! -
I haven't been paying too much attention but why is a Cat 1 getting so much attention? Obviously good to take precaution but apart from coastal areas and flooding doesn't sound bad in terms of what hurricanes are known for.
-
It's not just a cat 1, it's a cat 1 combining with two branches of the jet stream (so basically combining with a nor'easter storm system coming in from the west and causing a pressure differential, sucking the hurricane toward it). The two will collide and feed off each other. Have a gif:
!
I believe it's also the largest Atlantic storm we have on record. Add that to the fact that it's the lunar high tide, and well, you can see why some people would be worried.
!
e: Basically, expect Cat 2-3 surge levels in an area that's not really known for hurricanes and where the cone is really fucking big.
-
I can only hope for the safety of you people
-

And besides what Autumncomet said, a Cat 1 (Hurricane Isaac) hit Louisiana and caused widespread flooding in areas where some people described it as even worse than Katrina.
Under the right conditions, any level of hurricane can be devastating.

Be safe you guys!
As a Hungarian, I can't imagine what it's like to live through something like this.
-
Alright guys,be safe.

Why are storms–and other natural...things--mostly named after women? Is it because they PMS...? :ninja:
-
Hurricane names actually switch gender each time.

All I can say is so much for Halloween for New England. Poor kids.
-
Never realy had to deal with flooding, due to living in urban centres nowhere near a body of water outside of an outdoor pool. But I can imagine how annoying it must be. Hope things will be less horrible then everyone is currently saying.

I just read and interesting article on FiveThirtyEight about the impact Hurricane Sandy could possibly have on both the voting polls (as most people generally don't leave their homes during severe weather like this to rush to their nearest voting booths) as well as the overall 2012 Election.
http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/29/impact-of-hurricane-sandy-on-election-is-uncertain/#more-36840
I sincerely pray for the safety of everyone living in the hurricane's path, be they an arlong-park board member or not, yet I must ask an unfortunate nagging question:As a strong majority of the affected states (North-East) are largely Democratic-leaning, Hurricane Sandy's destruction may very well limit or otherwise depress voter turnout along the Eastern Seaboard during this crucial week or so, even on Election Day itself. Might this have the significant possibility of tipping the scale & election results in Romney's favor?
Again, I can only hope the safety of you guys, and don't mean to appear or act callous in any way by bringing politics into a natural disaster, but it's been on my mind this past weekend.

@No:
Have you ever seen Zachri ? :P
I've seen you, so there's nothing much to be weirded out by here.

Zachri's just young. Everybody's weird at that age.
And as one of the kids these days who likely eats, sleeps, and breathes tumblr, it just kicks that weirdness up to infinity million.
-
A lot of rain and wind for now on my end, nothing really serious yet
Cable's been schizo but that's all

People, that was a joke. One I've made many times before. I realise this is going massively offtopic but I thought it was good to clarify that.

Ocean City is flooded! D8

Ocean City.

Every other letter, hurricane names switch gender.
I hate being on the dirty side of the hurricane.

Please tell me there's no dead people yet….

Please tell me there's no dead people yet….
I see dead people.
Also, the winds seems to be reaching quite high levels by now in South Windham (15 miles from the coast of Portland)
-
Winds starting to get real on the Chesapeake. Not much damage yet thankfully and only a couple thousand outages so far.
-
All I can say is so much for Halloween for New England. Poor kids.
It makes up for us having literally the setting for Halloween you see in movies normally.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Please tell me there's no dead people yet….
People died in the Carribbean already, don't know if any Americans have died.
-
Lots of wind here, but no driving rain as of yet. So far it's just been mist and spray, albeit driven mist and spray.
-
Please tell me there's no dead people yet….
Around 70 people have already been killed in the Caribbean.

That's not really surprising sadly, those countries don't have very good infrastructure most of them. Haiti is straight up third world. It's kind of a given that hurricanes kill people down there.
-
Yes, most of them are from Haiti. Since the Earthquake, Haiti is still recovering.
-
Heard on the Weather Channel that the eye of the hurricane has disappeared, that it's fully merged with the cold front.
-

And thus no longer a hurricane but a mere tropical storm?

Haiti was always super third world.
-
The wind seems to have calmed down over here, though I can see out my window that part of a big metal fence that was closing off construction was blown over.
-
Almost no rain here, just been drizzling all day. High winds should be coming any hour now though.
-
Rain's gone, but the wind's as strong as ever
-
Yeah the wind is super crazy right now.
-
Anyone see '97 Ford Escorts flying by their window yet?
-
Our lights flickered a little bit but we still have power. We kept power during Irene last year so here's hoping.
-
Absolutely nothing happening here in upstate New York… As always...
-
Somehow we haven't lost power yet. Lights have been flickering but nothing else… god it'll be so boring when the power goes out.
-
I will be laughing like a madman from my home here in SoCal, where all I have to worry about is earthquakes, roving gangs and the hantavirus
