Again, Fairy Tail's at its best when it's not being a battle shounen.

chapter 276 out on mangastream

"For the sake of your comrades. That's just Trash!"
Hahahah! Oh no he didn't!
That's exactly the kind of bullshit that makes FT overcome stupendously impossible odds in the first place.
Go Bullshit. Go Fairy Tail. Go. Go. go. :getlost:Why am I still reading this?
-
Well, he just doesn't know that it's exactly this "trash" that's going to make FT win everything. It's like they'll cheat.
Anyway, so dragonslayers have motion-sickness… but isn't Laxus a fake one? How could he have it too? I guess I'll never have the answers. -
Don't look down on the chubby!
-
During the whole chapter I felt that I had missed the last chapter.
-
Chapter was okay. I like how the supposedly-invincible Sabretooth lost a match, and it was nice to see characters from the less-important guilds get time to shine. Still, I don't get why Gazille got motion-sickness. We haven't seen Luxus, Cobra, or the Sabretooth Dragon Slayers on vehicles before, and Wendy has magic to negate that sort of thing, but Gazille was on a boat (before they got to Tenrou Island) and the Phantom Lord mecha (which might be excused, as he'd think of it as a building - Natsu seems to have lower tolerance for that sort of thing anyways) without any problems.
It'll probably be explained in the volume's Q&A section that "he only gets sick on land vehicles" or something like that, but it's not a huge issue for me, as it made the chapter pretty funny.
-
The motion sickness for Natsu was always what he considered a vehicle. like Lucy to him is a vehicle so its more of a mental block that they all have.
This was a good chapter better then the one before it
They all had a race for last place -

It seems according to the chapter that there may be more significance to this than meets the eye…

does this mean that Gazeel just truly became a Dragonslayer during his training? How is that even possible?
-
This chapter managed to leave me with a confused feeling despite being very straightforward. Congrats.
-
During the whole chapter I felt that I had missed the last chapter.
Good. I wasn't the only one.
-
Dunno why, but I found this chapter pretty awesome. Just randomness like Ichiya getting high, the Dragon Slayers participating, and the "fodder" guilds not being so bad.
-
I'm sad that we get a female character that has a different body type, repeatedly say's don't look down on the chubby…then morphs into the usual tiny waist big bust character. sigh Ah well.
Chapter wasn't too bad I suppose, although for the Dragonslayer confusion. That really needs to be explained better. Wy would they have a natural problem with being on moving vehicles? Can you really just train to be more of a slayer? Wasn't Gajeel mentioned to be a real one anyways? Ahhh so confusing.
Also I love Baccus, a lush after my ow heart lol.
-
F*ck you random judge, Abed calling dibs on that line. I guess ppl immune to ft dramatic moments now. :/
-
I love how Mashima just jumped right into this chapter, glad he didn't take a chapter to explain the rules probably wanted to go back to the battle portion of the grand magic games
-
It is really weird that all "real" dragon slayers aren't good on transportation, but I kind of liked it better when it was just Natsu who had it. Meh maybe they can only ride on dragons without getting sick or something who knows.
-

I think this might become his main focus yet again, although to be fair, there's little I can think of you could use to stretch this out any.
Meh chapter, nothing that good happened, but nothing that bad happened.
-
Well that was dumb. Mashima got rid of Natsu's only unique trait.
-
I'm actually happy it's just not Natsu, it was a fucking retarded weakness and had no explanation at all… at least now we will eventually get some sort of explanation... Then again we probably won't... except lol dragonslayers.
-

Well with even "fake" Dragon Slayers like Laxus having it too it makes me wonder why Gajeel is just getting his now. Was he not enough of a Dragon Slayer before his training? He seemed strong enough to be one since he clearly was basically toe-to-toe with Natsu when they first fought…
Seems like something Mashima decided to throw in just now that there's more Dragon Slayers running around. And you all were so sure Natsu would win when it would be his time to fight that I was thinking Mashima would surprise us and make him lose.
-
Feels like some retconning going on. I would be upset, but…it's Fairy Tail.
So I just sit back, take the stupid, and enjoy.

Yea it is really weird that suddenly Gajeel is considered a "real" dragon slayer now given his strength. Maybe its the weird magical presence around that is affecting him giving him the symptoms now?
Still I hope Mashima explains more in the future and pulls of something interesting with the motion sickness thing, but Fairy Tail needs to win something at least, its getting sad.
-
During the whole chapter I felt that I had missed the last chapter.
Good. I wasn't the only one.
Exactly! I wonder how many people thought this
-
but Fairy Tail needs to win something at least, its getting sad.
Yeah, because if they don't win soon, they are going to win with all the bullshit we already know.
-
Yeah, because if they don't win soon, they are going to win with all the bullshit we already know.
They really seem set on continuing with this loosing streak. I'm wondering how Ezra and Laxus are gonna lose.
-
I was going to complain with everyone about this streak, but then I remember that most of Fairy Tail got their new strength from a spell. Could Mashima be self-aware enough to realize that Fairy Tail doesn't need or deserve to win, therefore they won't? Maybe that premonition we interrupt this losing stream and take us to something better? Maybe Fairy Tail will instead prove themselves in the face of a national tragedy instead of some game?
Probably not, but I don't know what else to do with this chapter. It seems like a break from the action where it's not really needed, I mean we had a ton of comic relief already. This chapter seems pointless even by Fairy Tail standards.
-
Pointless? A friendship speech is never pointless. Not in Fairy Tail.

or ponies…
Did they really have to make all dragon slayers get road sick? Didn't they ever fly on their parent dragons back? Comon
-
Likeliest outcome is that Fairy Tail continues to lose until massive incident takes place, then a real threat defeats all the guilds that won the contest, leaving Fairy Tail to save the day whilst spouting platitudes about friendship and the true nature of a real guild.

Well yeah but it doesn't count if it's on their Dragon's back, like how Natsu never gets sick with Happy. It's been implied that the sickness is really more of a mental block, as Chinascare put it. Doesn't make it any less out of the blue though. I'm positive Mashima just came up with the idea of all DS being motion-sick on transportation just now and thought it would be hilarious to introduce it here right after thinking of it.

Review time
_Hey all and hope your enjoying the first week of Spring. And hey another FT chapter, joy!
Chapter 276: Chariot
Skinny: We dive head first into day two of the games with the second event, Chariot; a foot race on a train like row of moving platforms. Natsu, Gajeel and Sting all compete in the event only for all to suffer motion sickness. The rest of the competing teams easily get ahead of them with Bacchus scoring first place for his team. The three dragon slayer push themselves to reach the goal with Natsu and Gajeel getting further. Sting decides to let FT have their points thinking it won't matter before asking why it's so important to them. Natsu gives a speech about how they're friends waited years for them during the time they were missing, so competing in the games is proof of their unwillingness to give up. Natsu crosses the line first earning his team six points and Gajeel one for his. Most of the audience seems moved by this showing and even applaud the guild. Sting unfortunately hasn't gotten the message from Natsu's speech
My Thoughts: Well this was a rather clumsily handled chapter. We just move right into the event with no build up withsoever and pretty much finish it off just as quickly. The last chapter seemed to promise Erza vs Bacchus, instead we get this footrace that felt more like filler then anything. I don't know if it was time constraints or what, but I seriously wasn't feeling the storytelling flow.
The only interesting points we get here is that we see more of Bacchus's power, practically overturning the wagons to beat the others (hungover too I might add, damn he is gonna be tough). Risley's gravity magic (and yet another excuse for Mashima to do fanservice =P). The fact that it seems all Dragon Slayers have motion sickness. I don't know if Wendy's an exception since she deals in healing magic and I'm surprised Laxus has this too considering he's an artificial dragon slayer but hey there you go.
Loved the cover too of the three dragon slayer literally butting heads, might've been better used in the chapter itself.
Natsu's speech is the usual friendship spiel we've heard countless times in other shonen manga, so its really nothing special. Yeah its sweet he loves his guild, we've known it countless times before so there was no need to make another big to do about it. If he has to do it, at least put it near the climax of the final battle not in some rinky dink track and field game. And why exactly was Natsu used for this? Just for the speech and some laughs about his weakness. This would've been better suited for Elfman (thats just me though).
Last but not least, Sting's character showcasing more of his cockiness and his pride, dude didn't even try which really says something about him if he thinks the FT taking some points won't make a difference, yeah he's going to fall and hard come the endgame. One question though. didn't he say in his introduction how leaving behind your comrades makes you trash? What's with the 180 all of a sudden? Just to make us hate his character? I would think that would've given him more incentive to fight Natsu later. Instead its just, "Meh whatever". Seriously Mashima keep tabs on your characters please, he's either cocky but knows the meaning of friendship or a smug prick that's only focused on being number one. Make up your mind!
Overall, a rather lackluster chapter that just reaffirms that Fairy Tail won't give up. You know, what we established last chapter but apparently needed another reminder about it. Like Sting's attitude at the end, I really couldn't give two ticks about it.
Grade: D_

It's as legit as Tommorow's Magic.

Can someone tell me when this happened??? -

Hoshi No Samidare
Between your suggestion and a bunch of positive feedback on the series from the forum decided to give it a read. Fun series.
There are a few things that bug me, but the enjoyment I got from reading the series overwhelms those aspects greatly.

Glad you like it. It has a unique flair to it and is a spectacular read when you have The Pillows playing in the background.

don't look down on the chubby

-
so based on this chapter it basically shows the power lvl's of dragon slayer based on how road sick they get…I knew it was something like that for a long while but still, it doesnt make sense when you compare it to prev stuff (like w/ Gajeel)

Gajeel wasn't strong enough to get road sick back then. Now he is.
Yeah, it's weird.

don't look down on the chubby
There was this funny Chubby beverage ad I wanted to share(something that showed back in my old country), but it's nowhere to be seen.
It would have been really fitting though. -
I thought them all getting motion sickness was hilarious
-
I also found the motion sickness to be fine, but that speech…..
-
When it's mindless, comedic, and focuses on other characters than the main dullards, FT can be quite tolerable. I legitimately enjoyed the first part of the chapter, nonsensical "Gravity makes you slim!" transformation aside.
But- and theres always a but with FT isn't there- then came the focus on Natsu. It may just be me, but apart from being forced and horribly written, Natsus speech just didn't make any sense. Sting made an incredibly valid point: FT shouldn't be the kind of guild that gives a rats ass what people think of them, and Natsus response is that they fight to save face for their incompetent friends who were mocked…because they DO care what people think of them? Seems like he didn't really counter the point at all.
But bad as it may be, the speech was much better than the fact that motion sickness is now ubiquitous for dragon slayers. Mashima has thrown away the only remaining individuality Natsu had left. Motion Sickness defined him to such a degree that his opposite Edoras Natsu was nothing more than a guy who likes vehicles and got sick on flat ground. And now, at least 6 other people share that characteristic. The only thing Natsu has left are the horrible friendship speeches. And that just reaffirmed one of my absolute biggest gripes with the series:
I don't like Natsu.
But I don't even hate him either.
I just couldn't possibly care less about his existence. He is one of the absolute dullest protagonists I have ever seen.Do any of you feel the same way?
-
I wholeheartly agree. Mashima had potential, but he makes several big mistakes. One of them is Natsu, or protagonists in general - they've always been generic but at least haru had a somewhat ok romance going on to push his character a bit forward. Natsu and all the other Mc's are just flat as a cardboard. Also, Mashima resolves his conflicts too fast. It ruins the rather decent approach he has when he actually draws the first few chapters of a new arc. But then out of nowhere he decides to shit all over it and pulls random deus ex machinae out of his butt.
-
Natsu and Erza are two of the more boring characters in the guild, which is unfortunate considering Erza's early potential.
The fact that one of the two is used as a deus ex machina for every major situation is what makes the larger arc of the series fail in most regards.
-
While he's hardly a revolutionary character, in my mind Natsu does stand out a bit by virtue of being a lot more violent and fight-happy than most other shonen protagonists.
-
Natsu could be made more interesting if Mashima could keep some semblance of an arc regarding his quest to find Igneel; right now, he's just a directionless fight-happy fire demon who spouts off about the virtues of friendship.
Erza, on the other hand, is inextricably bound to a nonsensical storyline with one of the eight Gerards, so I tend to think I'll never find her interesting.
-
Natsu is every tired cliche of a shonen protagonist all rolled up into one ball without any interesting quirks or features that set him apart and make him his own character.
-
Natsu is "fight happy", he's hot tempered, simple, and…just about all the most easily written, stock character traits you can think of. The only thing that didn't feel stitched on like some horrible shonen-protagonist frankensteins monster, the only thing that felt like legitimately his own thing, was the motion sickness.
Mostly I'm just annoyed how he's the series poster boy despite the fact that the story doesn't revolve around him in the slightest, and the fact that he's not even at least some sort of group leader.
Natsu is to this series as Vaan was to FFXII.
