@Ajiro:
I'm not getting a fair answer besides Md-martin's huh? (by the way your description can be described for almost any comic and the ultimate goal of it, IE Luffy becoming Pirate king or Narini Becoming the mayor of a shitty village) Fair enough, it would take much too much thought process and work to get me into a series like this anyway. Thanks Md!
It's really too bad we don't have any sort of internet-wide search engine, or else you could look up details about Bakuman that way, instead of barging into a thread and sullenly demanding "what the hell is going on here anyway", then getting sarcastic when people don't take you seriously.
But, here's the low-down, anyway.
Bakuman is a manga about two dudes forming an ultimate bromance and trying to write manga. One of them forms a promise with his middle school secret love, that they'll get married once they both realize their dreams (she becoming a famous voice actress, he becoming a famous mangaka). This will be finalized when he gets an anime adaption, and she gets to voice the heroine. The other dude ends up getting married earlier, but that doesn't matter much.
But mainly, this manga is about the process of writing manga. struggling to come up with ideas, meet deadlines, dealing with drama among the various authors and assistants, maneuvering to get an anime, competing for the top spot, etc. The other authors are all much more interesting characters than our leads, and a lot of time is spent developing them. The best thing, for me, is that you get sort of a "behind-the-scenes" look at how Jump functions. Bakuman clearly explained the editorial process to the masses.
At its best, Bakuman is informative and hilarious. At its worst, it's face-palmingly stupid in the "why is this an issue this should not be and issue why are we still talking about this stupid shit and his dog" sort of way. Some of the time it's just boring as we wait for our heroes to come up with their next big hit. It's wordy and reaction-facey all the time.
Overall, it's a good manga. If you like the idea of writing manga, and don't mind soap opera drama, then check it out. If you want Death Note level mindgames, great art, a moving romance, then this isn't that. Maybe you should try Berserk, I hear that's a great shoujou.
