What's so good about flaws and quirks?
There's a reason why I like Robin more than Chopper, Brook and Franky.
Because it makes characters more than just basic concepts like "the sniper", "the chick" or "the big brute". Also makes interaction between them better.
I hated Usopp for nearly 300 chapters after he joined because he was weak and ran away a lot and complained all the time. Now he's one of my favorites, after I came to realize he was the everyman and what his role was among all the badasses.
I knew I was going to hate Chopper after seeing early promo art because he was weird looking and the blatant token cute mascot thing. Then he had the best backstory of the series.
I felt Robin was really out of place for the entirety of Skypiea. All the others were so quirky and she… wasn't. Even most of water 7 she was out of place... but then she clicked immediatley in Thriller Bark. (And I have to think in her case it was intentional that she didn't fit.)
I didn't like Franky when he joined. TOO insane. But he won me over pretty quick in Thriller Bark. Brook... I'm tired of his constant jokes. But I like him all the same.
Just cause you personally don't like a character really isn't a debate point. In Jinbe's case, possibly because we've been debating and calling him crew material for so long, I've long thought of him as part of the group, and like him a lot. He's a straightman, and the crew needs another one of those after the insanity of Franky and Brook. He reminds me a lot of Zelgadis from Slayers (and not just because he's blue) who was always my favorite.
Also. Its funnier when the straightman gets thrown into comedy. Luffy getting a pie thrown in his face would be meaningless and dull. But Robin or Jinbe? Hilarious.
Well this has been a terrible turn of events. Hopefully this isn't the beginning of the end
But some of you Jinbei supporters were right, seems he's joining. I'm expecting more flashbacks next week before an answer comes. I hope Oda eventually makes him less boring and more likeable or just has him revert back to flashback Jinbe.
If not hopefully Sabo kills Jinbe.

After finally reading the chapter, I can confidently say Jinbe will join.

Maybe that's the reason I get so annoyed by Jinbe joining. It's the very first time I don't instantly like a crewmate. Each of the other ones, I could see a reason (metaplot-wise) for them to be there. I knew their roles in the crew and how cool their interactions and character growth would be. (The exception was Robin; I didn't knew what to expect of her, but the mystery was the thing that made me like her)

Yeah, I know it can be funny, and it was funny in the few times it happened already (Jinbe hungry X Hancock, or Jinbe finding Shirahoshi out of the castle). But there are two other straightmen in the crew already (Zoro, who is not really a straightman but acts like one, and Robin).

I don't hate him. I actually like him, I just don't feel like he has enough to stay fresh as one of the main cast until the end of the story. He feels like a too "well-rounded, no extremes" type of personality that is hard to develop and renew as the story goes on.
I don't even want to get in this conversation again but its like people are in denial or don't read the chapter right.
How the fuck is Jinbe bland? he had a bit of everything in this arc, I just can't understand how someone who actually read the chapter can say that, its dumb…
Deicide I bet if there never was an Hancock you would have liked Jinbe and that is the root of the problem with you and many other members.
Like I others said though I also had two SHs that really didn't click with me since the start, Robin and Brook, Brook because I really had an hard time with him being a skeleton I liked the character itself from the start but the whole being a skeleton thing made me think otherwise, eventually Oda explained stuff and I came to accept it, plus I enjoyed him from the start as a character like I said so that was never a barrier for me.
Robin well with time I really grew to enjoy her but like I said at the time I wasn't really excited about her joining, I was like humm interesting twist lets see how this goes, after her story was revealed in Water 7/Ennis Lobby I really started liking her more.
Jinbe well I like him a lot, just like I like Zoro and Franky a lot as soon as I saw them, in all aspects, personality design and quirks that you guys apparently don't see...plus with his SH moments in this arc, like the whole plan name, seriously the whole plan name situation convinced me even more at the time that he would join(I jumped in the bandwagon in Impel Down).
Well I hope people eventually start liking him more like I said I did with Robin with time...
I can see people opinions not changing there are still some old fans that don't like Franky and Brook at all from what I read around the forum.

To be fair, Robin hadn't really displayed "flaws or quirks" before joining either. She went from cold-blooded assassin to a straight-man who provides the always necessary sardonic black humor. In the end, what it comes down to (for me) is the fact that Oda is too good a writer (at least when it comes to his beloved characters) to throw in a completely boring character that doesn't add anything to the mix. It's hard to imagine that he hasn't already thought of this exact complaint.
To add to this point, we really haven't seen Jinbe during his down time. He was imprisoned during Impel Down, the entire time on their way to Marineford he was at the helm and after the battle his time was spent on recovery and helping Luffy flip off the WG to send his message to his crew. For all we know, he likes to crack open a bottle of sake and joke around with his crew.

Maybe. The reason I thought Hancock was going to join was because she had a tremendous backstory, an inner conflict (that is still unresolved) and a very interesting personality with two extremes (the cold bitch persona and the hidden scared girl underneath).
I mean, those few panels of reactions of the crew towards her show how much potential she had for comedy (and she wasn't even interacting with them), while her inner conflict would add a more serious tone to her. (I actually kinda hated the overexposure of her love antics; what amused me was the cold bitch persona and the idea of her warming up to others and losing her fears of showing weakness).

Until a few weeks ago I did because this current arc was so lame. Couple that with other manga being better to me I might take another break after I see where this next arc is going and how Oda uses Jinbei as a crew member or I could just keep reading and continue to think Jinbe isn't all that good of a character, enjoying OP minus Jinbe.

The people I see disliking his character are some old members and some new "dumb" wave fans, the I want boobs and rapists fans.
Anyway I'm not going to talk about it anymore, people have their opinions and aren't wiling to change them, so stay with it, not really the one to push anything into anyone.
P.S.: You can take break and read all those better mangas out there, I've been reading a lot and I don't see any better then One Piece rigth now, HxH has been exciting but that is it, care to give suggestions?

I think people are going to need to see Jinbe alongside the crew in the next arc. He's pretty much the male version of Robin at the moment, in a sense I think that sort of character would be a nice addition to the usual comedic antics of the rest of the male members, at least Oda is able to make him do stupid things as well.
It all hinges on whether or not you have faith in Oda as a writer. Give it time, let it sink in.
I was always wanting another female to be the final member, but if we do have to have yet another guy, I welcome Jinbe with open arms.

I've been trying (really) to accept him ever since FI arc began, but Jinbe failed to surprise me up to now. We will probably see more backstory on him before he finally joins, so I hope it gives me some pleasant surprise.

This mostly. I'm guessing when Robin first joined people were thinking the same things, but despite what we know about Jinbe, we don't know much about him personally. Once I definitiely know his goals/ambitions/quirks I'll probably like him a lot more.
And I also agree with you Deicide that he seems like a straight man in a similar vein to Zoro. Heck, even his "I take things too seriously" is similar to Zoro in some aspects. Huh. He's kinda like the inverse of Brook (fighting style somewhat like but not really similar to Sanji, but personality more like but not really similar to Zoro) minus the individual quirk thing. But watching him interact with the crew in the future will be part of the fun.
I am glad though that the crew is getting somebody more reserved. And he is a unique character which meshes with the crew's profile. I'm not against Jinbe joining (not nearly as much as I used to be), but…I'm okay with him on the crew.

My friend and i argue about this yesterday also he said he is not into Jinbe joining the crew but he is not against the man, he said Jinbe is too veteran to be in the crew, too strong, too serious, has no specific job in the crew, not so unique, no tearful back story, and with him the whole crew will be too scary in the new world.
I answer my friend with this How about brook he is very old, How about Robin she is serious and back when she was introduced her power was nearly invincible with almost no visible weakness but then her weakness shows up, He could actually be a helmsman, isn't your brotherly figure and most respected person dying in front o you not tearful enough, new world is kind mysterious there shichibukai is just the government's pet the title is not into comparison with the yonkou, and his is unique he is the only known fishman to communicate with marine animals.
In the end i reason it out with him he says he could get use to it and wait for the turn of events

Just remember, there was still that group of Paulie fans that were angry after Franky joined. Then people were adamantly against Brook joining in Thriller Bark because it felt "too soon" for another crew mate, coming right off of Enies Lobby.

Well once it is all official - I suspect Jinbei is joining to be the SH that dies - the real one not another Merry style.
Jinbei seems to be more a sacrificial lamb personality - endearing enough that he will fit in but not so long standing that he he will shatter peoples souls when he bites it. I mean out of all the SH's the only one I suspected being acutally killed was going to be Brook or Franky. I'll wait till it is official though before I start thinking deeper into it.

The only time Oda ever talked about an SH dieing, he was talking about Merry. And I doubt we'll even get anything like that again. The whole idea runs entirely counter to the point of the timeskip

Yes I was open to liking Jinbei or even being completely indifferent towards him when he was just another important side character. Then he got lame with all the die for WB talk. It became incessant and led to him being annoying to me. Putting that aside, there was nothing else about him I found likeable.
Go back and read the old posts though and try to separate why I thought Jinbei wasn't going to join and posts of why I didn't like or care for him if you're gonna make that claim.

When a character establishes themselves as boring/lame/horrible or any other negative it's pretty hard for me to see the character differently unless the author makes an effort on their own to focus on that character and make changes for w/e reason.
What you find funny with Jinbe I do not. When I do I'll comment on it. I've done it before. People on here loosely use the term badass for regular attacks. Currently there isn't one badass bone in Jinbei. It's seems it's no longer in his character anymore. Maybe that'll change when he's with the crew though.

No it's not. Death for the betterment of the story. I wanted Ace to die but I didn't happen to hate him like other ppl did with the exceptional zeal they displayed in hating him. Granted I was never fond of him.
As far as hate goes I'd sooner see Hancock die before Jinbe cuz I see her as an incredibly lame female character but Oda's put her on the backburner until he needs her to pop back up and I think we all agree after this chap it's not like Oda's going to write Jinbe out of the story until he wants him to show up again.

lol@ people saying jimbeis boring, every time we've seen him he's been in serious situations when he can't express himself like the other sh's do. Now that the arc is finally over watch oda put in work into his character give him a few quirks and become likeable. He already has his strategy name bit who's to say he won't get more when he joins.

Speculation yes.
But it fits with the situation in a sense - From Sabondy when all SH's were seperated Luffy formed an alternate crew that in the space of 1 day Escaped a maximum security prison and got involved in a major war. In this war both Ace and Whitebeard died Jinbei was present for both of those. Since Croc - Buggy - Iva have all gone separate ways now Jinbei joining the crew being the only link to that moment and Luffy.
(Sorry if this sounds a little disjointed I have been up all night again.)
But you know the old saying everything comes in 3's? well there is the possibility that Jinbei is able to be the third sometime in the future - his character type alone suggests it and lets be honest in the final battle against Blackbeard there has to be some form of mortality. Otherwise we get into the mindset that no one in One Piece dies - we know Luffy isn't going to die but the suspense is there - but realistically any Strawhat could bite it, just think back to when Zoro put himself on the line for Luffy granted the storyline and presentation probably didn't move me as much as say when Merry died but I felt it non the less.
As I said I suspected it would be Franky or Brook to have that touching moment but with the way Jinbei is being presented "Even if I die" protection style shows me he is subtlety preparing people for his inevitable death - Just look at the symbolism Jinbei helped Luffy escape and essentially be reborn/strengthed - he is now providing blood and life to Luffy - the only step up from that is to Die protecting Luffy from "something" probably with another flashback to Ace and Jinbei in the cell together and Ace asking him to protect Luffy.
Again this is pointless debate till it is official - and I have probably ballsed up my explanation - But that's what is kicking around in my head for why Jinbei.

In all seriousness, I believe that Zik and I are on the same page. On that collage you posted none of that strikes me as interesting (Except for Jinbe throwing the water pillar. That will always be bad ass to me) or funny. I guess all of you are lucky to see this character as cool. I have tried, time and time again, but Jinbe is just lame to me.
Also, Zoro and Robin are the best straightmen on the Straw Hat crew hands down so that aspect of his character is lost to me.

Robin isn't really a straightman, at least not in the typical comedic sense. Sane man isn't the same as straight man you know. Robin just goes with it far too much for me to really consider her one. And Zoro hasn't been a straight man in ages
