Hmm though I'm fine with Jimbei joining but I wanted Caribou dam it! Still it looks like the aging box is going to come into play now, I wonder what Oda has in store next. This is what I love about the post finale of arcs you never know what will happen next.
Chapter 648: The Path Towards The Sun

Isn't Nakama like less than friends. It means something like co-worker. or co-something…. Kinda like colleague.
I love the feeling when reading in japanese, mainly because I remember the Nami scene. But in this case I kinda liked the "Wanna join my crew" the best. -
The hat is one of the worst transgressions of this fate/destiny thing. I don't think you and I are on the same page.
i've read your earlier pose and agreed that roger and luffy are similar in many way..but it's always been like that from the very beginning..so it's not a surprise..
And the fact that they are similar those not mean they will share the same fate/destiny…roger destined to died on the execution stand to pave way for the new era and pass the 'will of D' to the next gen..the reason that he deliberately being captured(surrender without a fight) by garp and sengoku are because he already knew the answer(something i believe related to Raftel) after completed his journey with his crew..and the answer is Luffy..
Luffy on the other hand are destined to do something great and unparallel..something that never been done by other even the like of Roger himself..
-
well i like a lot jimbe but he already have been in the new world i think? whats the point in going with him to the NW if hes already been there
-
well i like a lot jimbe but he already have been in the new world i think? whats the point in going with him to the NW if hes already been there
Because he's going their with Luffy. Ain't no voyage like a Straw Hat voyage.
-
Anybody else think of Moria when they saw the guy on the top left on the last spread?
-
i love when they use the word nakama in translations. I dont feel its the same as just "friend" or "crew", nakama is something more.
Except its not. It isn't a magic word with no translation. In fact, keeping it as is distorts the meaning.
Same way NOT translating Haki as Ambition, or Shichibukai as Warlord distort the meaning and make them stand out in ways they weren't meant to. And it loses all meaning. Its just a word now. They're supposed to be casual words that can slip subtly into the text, not giant glowing neon signs.
If they were supposed to be magical foreign words, then the original Japanese text would have them in english or something. Having them be in Japanese in the English is just weird and wrong.
Morgan I'm really interested to know what he is up to too, him and Foxxy were pretty much ignored and Oda usually shows his old characters in some fashion.
Morgan was seen free in the cover stories, too.
@Rogues':
What about Kuro?!
His plan was crushed, scheme shattered, he went into retirement. He's not going to go back to being a pirate, and no one that wanted him knows he's alive anymore, so… There isn't anything else to tell about him.
-
For those who can't understand why people like Jimbe, I think it's mainly his loyalty. He's willing to throw away his title and put himself a physical hell rather than war against whitebeard. He was then willing to fight in the war to save Ace. Even during the "Whitebeard War," where he had only known for hours, he sarificed his safety and health for Luffy's. And now, after all he has done for Fishman Island, he probably follow Luffy into a literal hell. He never hesitated, never questioned and never wanted anything. If that's not a nakama attitude, what is.
Secondly, though I personally welcome the additon, and beleve he will join up as usual, I did think of another idea that may not have been thought of.
Presenting, 1st division commander of the Strawhat Pirates (fishman division), Jimbe the Knight of the Sea!
The remaining fishman pirates (under Jones and Van Decker), along with the slaves and Shirahoshi, (Queen of the Sea Kings would make an awesome pirate epithet. It is different from Vivi, where she was the heir to the throne.) , make a giant sail, draw a strawhat Jolly Roger on it(with a Sunny Pirates Sun on there somewhere), and crew Noah under him.
-
Ouka shishibukai does not mean warlord. Why translate it as that? That is one translation I hate…
And Haki should remain as Haki, just because our understanding of the word "ambition" is different from japanese understanding of Haki. -
Jinbe is great because hes a good straight man, can bend water, is blue, has fun facial expressions and looks like a Goomba.
-
I'm wondering what'll happen to Hody from here. Now, even though I was hoping for his ultimate death (most either by Irony or from an ES Overdose), I am not at all upset of where this is going. I'm among the camp that liked Hody, and at one point hoped he was just someone's puppet or was "misunderstood." Then he overdosed on ES and the transformation was just so impressive to me that I wanted to see another one, even if it meant his death in the end.
I'm still really, really pulling for a return of Arlong. (Please don't try refute that by saying he is in jail because that was two freaking years ago! The Mugiwara weren't the only ones who time skipped you know…) Some Arlong/Hody interaction would make a Fishman Fan very happy.
-
Jinbeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee nakama!! Hell yeahh!!!!
-
I am so happy about the newest chapter!!
Jimbei has been one of my favourite characters since he appeared, and now he's going to be a part of the Straw Hats!! -
Next chapter, after Luffy asked Jinbe everyone on the plaza will scream in uproar because they´ll probably think that the question itself is very impudent but Jinbe will just casually answer: Yes!!!!
And everyone goes, WTF!! -
@gotta<3OP:
Isn't Nakama like less than friends. It means something like co-worker. or co-something…. Kinda like colleague.
I love the feeling when reading in japanese, mainly because I remember the Nami scene. But in this case I kinda liked the "Wanna join my crew" the best.Exactly this. The most apt translation of "Nakama" is "Part of a group".
Any group setting would be "Nakama", and that does include your coworkers. All of your coworkers would be your "Nakama" even the smelly quiet one that nobody really likes, they just talk to him because he gives off that 'gonna go on a shooting rampage' vibe, and you'd rather he think of you in a friendly way when that day comes.
The meaning isn't even consistently "Deep" within One Piece itself. The STRAW HATS are good to one another so when THEY use the word it looks special.
But Foxy was fine betting and trading his "Nakama" like pogs. In fact, Chopper was officially Foxy's "Nakama" for a while (Robin too in the Anime) and Chopper HATED it. If "Nakama" were "Something more than friend", why was he crying when he became Foxy's "Nakama"? Because he hated it, he was just forced to be Foxy's "Crewmate", and that's all Oda means whenever he writes "Nakama".
The Super deep amazing bond is something the Straw Hats just have because they're the Straw Hats, not because of a magic word.

That's a very nice description of Jinbe, unfortunately I'm afraid you wasted your time because Jinbe's detractors only care about one thing; Is he Kawaii ?
-
If Jinbe was thin, or a girl, there wouldn't have been half as many arguments against him along the way.
-
People only hate Jinbe because he's fat.
-
Have faith in Oda! I'm sure Jinbe will fit in nicely.
-
I really dislike stories of fate and destined success. Originally, Luffy was just a guy in the world using hard work and good people skills to succeed. Now we are learning that the only reason Luffy has what it takes it because he's destined to. That's stupid in my opinion.
Exactly this.
But there have been times where its proven Roger is still different from Luffy
In the flashback, Roger comments on how sturdy Rayleighs boat is. Luffy would never do that…he knows nothing about a ship.
Roger got married and clearly loved someone. Now Luffy is still young...but really? We all know thats never going to happen
Plus Luffy isn't predestined to become PK. He could've died dozens of times. Its a manga bro, PLOT ARMOR. One Piece handles it surprisingly well though

Haki gets a free pass because "ki" "chi" "nen" and others that I won't mention.
Shichibukai should be "The seven privateers of the world" by meaning, they were given pardon by a goverment and special permision to pillage under their control, they didn't obtain nor hold political power or lands by an army or military force, the yonkou should be "The four warlords of the new world".
Nakama and techniques not native of santoryu shouldn't stay untranslated.

Ask for Jinbe joining, I don't care. I'm one of those few who don't really want him to, as it would ruine the Monster Trio but whatever. I really enjoyed the chapter, every thing about it was good.
I find the people who use the phrase monster trio are just as irritating as these translations of nakama and haki.
I find the monster trio really devaluing to the rest of the crew. I mean look at this guys reasoning for not liking Jinbe. Horrendously ridiculous
-
I am also against the Roger = Luffy comparisons done all the damn time. Why can't the story be about Luffy and not about Luffy doing everything Roger did, looking like Roger, wearing Roger's clothes, acting like Roger, having Roger's abilities, ect.
I mean how come Sea Kings have been waiting for Shirahoshi for thousands of years, or someone who can talk to sea kings I should say, and yet within 20 years there are 2 HUMANS who can hear sea kings talk?
It kind of reminds me of a book series that has a huge problem with this cliche thing of having too much coincidences on a main character. I mean look at Eragon. First is his name, he has the same name as the first ever dragon rider. Then he names his Dragon the same name as his Fathers dragon. And lets not even get into the whole family thing about all the cliche family things that screams star wars, which One Piece did that as well with Dragon and Garp and Ace.
Maybe thats why out of the strawhat crew, Luffy might be my least favorite person. The rest of them are for the most part just normal people that are doing the best they can and became amazing. Meanwhile Luffy is the grandson of this amazing war hero, he is the son of the leader of the revolutionaries. He is best buds with a Yonkuo, he is wearing the Pirate Kings hat, he has this unique super rare Haki, he can hear Sea Kings speak or listen to all things.
And out of ALL those things, the only one that he earned was the Hat by befriending Shanks. The rest was given to him upon birth. No matter what anyone else in the series did, they could not achieve any of those other things due to not being born with them.
Meanwhile look at the rest of the crew. Everything they have and stand for or do, they all earned for themselves. Even Robin studied her ass off to become the archiologist her mom was, she wasn't born an archiologist. No one has some Fancy parents that we know of. No one has some special unique power that ONLY they can do. (obviously devil fruits could have been eaten by anyone, so don't say those)
Yet here is LUffy with as I listed above, just some rediculous amount of unique things that are so cliche. Feels like Naruto. I mean look at all the connections Naruto has through history and his family and so on. Both One Piece and Naruto started out so great with the main protagonists being just themselves and doing the best they could as themselves. Then all of a sudden they decided they need to have the most crazy parents, grandparents, history, ect ever to give a quick "wow" factor to readers. Its a cheap wow factor and I hate it.
-
Jinbe's answer will be: "Of course I will, even if it costs me my life!"
-
Jinbe's answer will be: "Of course I will, even if it costs me my life!"
No his answer will be
Thank you Monkey D. Luffy I will accept this role without hesitation!
Come on people get the reference?
-
I admit I was wrong, I hope he develops and doesn't become a male Robin, because that would suck.
-
Nothing in OP can compare to Bon Clay's sacrifice at impel down.
:wassat: Zoro's sacrifice at TB was more epic. But anyway, cool chapter. Hope we know more about Shirley's prediction…
-
:wassat: Zoro's sacrifice at TB was more epic.
Jimbes sacrifice for Luffy was slightly less epic but still incredibly epic
–- Update From New Post Merge ---

Jimbes one of properness. Robin is one of seriousness. Theres a huge difference
-
-
Haha, you guys are funny. :P
But if Franky can fit in them doors with his super (pun intended) shoulders why not Mr. Whale Shark?
-
I think Jinbe's addition to the crew will take some time for the fanbase to fully accept, but I think I will warm up to it in time. Jinbe is one of my favorite characters, and he is a great addition to the crew. Their crew will be incredibly diverse with 4 DF users, a human-reindeer, a cyborg, and a fishman. I can see Jinbe being funny in his own right and he seems to be more expressive then Robin (usually). I still remember the scene where Luffy, Sanji, and Jinbe all get punched and his goofy face made me think "Oh wow, he's joining the crew now." It just seemed like an instinct thing.
No matter what, Strawhat Crew cosplay groups just got harder if he accepts.
-
Yes, it was truly more epic but it wasn´t as sad as Bon-Chan´s sacrifice. I mean that guy felt so leaving his friend to Magellan that he went to the Freezing Hell to save him, tried to fight off all the wolves, screamed for 20 hours until he couldn´t move anymore and then he stays behind for the purpose of giving Luffy the chance to save his brother.
-
…What sacrifice?
-
@Cyan:
People only hate Jinbe because he's fat.
Mostly that, but we needed a fat guy in the crew. Shanks has one (Lucky Roo), so Luffy needs one too. And since we've covered just about every body type in the crew, all we're missing is an ugly female to both complete the final spot and haunt Sanji.
-

Well, i find it way more cool when they mix Japanese words in there. Maybe its because im very used to mix languages and i feel like its a normal thing.
-
I still believe that jinbe has only a 50% chance of joining the crew after reading this chapter…You have to think of the possibility that he might decline the offer of being a strawhat member.
-
@Superbear:
No, sacrifice means that the person would lose something.
Zoro lost absolutely nothing. -
No, sacrifice means that the person would lose something.
Zoro lost absolutely nothing. He lost 10 gallons of blood, that's something.
-
Its funny how people would consider Jinbe fat, I never thought of that…. I always regarded as thick because the kind of fishman he is, I just assumed his body's built that way...
I also didin't like the idea of him joining before, but as each chapter went by he grew into me.... what else does he need doing or probing for people to accept him? Oda has layered his character ever since Ace asked for the guy to take care of his brother...
I would be surprised if he DOESN't join...
and if you dislike him about his age or that he is too serious, come on, I hope when you guys get old younger people would no teat you like that, disregard you just because your age.
Don't take me wrong, I'm NOT a pro Jimbei fan, I'm just accepting the facts and trying to keep an open mind.... he will grow on us...
-
Luffy finally propose… and Jinbe answers is?? Well.. he better not say "I gotta protect my princess" or sum sh## like that!!
-
Then all of a sudden they decided they need to have the most crazy parents, grandparents, history, ect ever to give a quick "wow" factor to readers. Its a cheap wow factor and I hate it.
If by "they" you mean "Oda" and by "all of a sudden" you mean "Since the beginning of the story", then yes (hint: Oda's had OP planned out all along).
On another note nearly all of this stuff you're pointing out is related to the Will of D, and due to the fact that that's been present since the first chapter of One Piece I'd be careful to condemn it as a "cheap wow factor".

Wow, hold your horses. I get where you´re coming from, I had similar thoughts, but still:
Luffy fought his whole life to get where he got now. Even Garp said during the war that revealing his family shouldn´t affect his infamy. Yes, I know he´s special with that Haki and all, but it was pretty much clear from the beginning that he´ll be special, with that D. in his name…I sure hope this won´t be a problem that´ll endure throughout the series and that parallels are better dealt with...I guess we´ll see the big picture and go "damn!" (at least I hope so).
Naruto´s biggest problem wasn´t really his provenience etc., but how the story developed after the timeskip (IMO). This destiny trope can surely be handled well and I trust Oda to do just that! (the casual slip-up is only...human. Or needed. ^^)
-
I'm still really, really pulling for a return of Arlong. (Please don't try refute that by saying he is in jail because that was two freaking years ago! The Mugiwara weren't the only ones who time skipped you know…)
- 2 years =/= released from jail/escaped from jail. Especially Impel Down. If no prisoner has escaped since Shiki's time (excluding Luffy's jailbreak which is a completely irrelevant situation because it's overwhelmingly likely Arlong doesn't have too many friends or allies in a jail full of humans), what makes you think Arlong could singlehandedly escape?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also, are people forgetting the decade or more of training that Luffy did (plus the two-year timeskip) to become as powerful as he is now?
Musta been fate, I guess.
-
The translations for the most interesting part of this chapter were confusing as hell.
.
Funny & cool bits the ending pages were really nice w
And I have a feeling we won't see Noah again until much later in the series as in post raftel later. Anyway get crackin Robin.ps: lol who is caribou going to sell the casket to? dis gonna be good.
ps1: where did Wiper get that pocahontas weave from?@CCC: Oh I see about the casket. "I wonder if we can fix it BY that appointed time" (Seakings, re: Noah) just made things extra interesting.
I'm really thinking this promise is going to be tied with post One piece's discovery.(there is the great world change Otohime mentionned in connection with the legend too but that could just have been what started at the end of this chapter, though I doubt it). Thanks for the corrections. -
No, sacrifice means that the person would lose something.
Zoro lost absolutely nothing.I hate that reasoning.
It's not the result, its the choice. He chose to take on Luffy's pain and sacrifice himself for Luffy and the crew. He made that choice with a 100% certaintly he was going to die. Whether or not he did, does not matter.
What your saying is, it doesn't matter what a persons objective or interest is, it only matters the end result. Like lets say someone was pulling a prank and put a cherry bomb in a random person mailbox. When that person opened the mailbox it blew up and the person died. Now lets say that same person is instead someone from the future and knew the person who lived there was Adolf Hitler and so they put a cherry bomb in the mailbox and killed him that way.
Both end result, the person kills Adolf Hitler and saves the world from him. But the way it got there is way different. One is a punk kid pulling a stupid prank and accidently saving the world, and would never know. While the other is someone knowing killing him in order to save the world from him.
-
Wiper looks awesome with long hair.
Luffy asking Jinbe to join his crew certainly suprised me (don't get me wrong, it's not like he wasn't in the running), I mean, I wasn't sure when it was going to happen if it did. Originally, I wanted someone who wasn't Hancock/Perona/Jinbe to join, but Jinbe has grown on me. Will he say yes or no? ….Dunno. I'll be fine with either choice, though.
Interesting scene between the Sea Kings and Shirahoshi. (them alluding to Roger also caught me off guard)
With the mermaids disappearing from the castle, I can only think of Caribou. How will the situation with him pan out?
-
