Huh? This was the first time he did it in the manga, too. I don't see what it has to do with making more sense for anime-only viewers.

Haters gonna hate, this episode was quite epic! Pacing has been perfect since the start of the timeskip as far as I'm concerned, will just have to wait and see how it holds up in the next 10 or so episodes.
-
I made a gif with that scene =>

-
I was really looking forward to this episode, as probably many were.
The pacing's been too slow in recent episodes, especially with the lack of content in the chapters already, but this one did have quite a bit for the animators to work with.
It was good, but it wasn't as epic as I thought it could be. The only part that made me more excited than when I read it was the 'too slow', that was well done.
I'm being a bit harsh, but I had high expectations.
-
Not a great episode for animation and presentation, though the content it covered carried it.
Surprised more people aren't pointing out my biggest complaint, namely that they repeated nearly a minute and a half of content after the eyecatcher.

I do admit that I think it could have been better. I don't know anything about budget or whatever, but if there was an episode to use 377's animation (Zoro vs Kuma), it would have been this one. Not that rough style, but just the masterful level. Oh well though, what can you do when animators are paid scrap money.
I think everything skyrocketed in the second half, but Luffy talking with Rayleigh was pretty awkward to me. The music didn't really fit there.
They've still been maintaining a nice overall quality though since the end of Marineford so I can't complain much. One Piece just usually knocks these important episodes out of the park, like 236, 277-278, 312, 377, etc.
-
Luffys talk with Rayleigh should have had soaring music, Had Luffys line shouted with conviction, could have been juxtaposed to an image of his Master-of-the-coast- KO Pose that it is an homage to and yes, needed Rayleighs tears to underscore the drama. It was basically
Luffy: Hey Rayleigh!
Rayleigh: Hey
Luffy: I'm going to be the pirate king!
Rayleigh:….yeah, I know.
Luffy:...Yeah.
Awkward. And someone mentioned earlier about PX-5 flying towards Luffy and then is shown standing on the ground, but it's not really a broken scene. It does show PX-5 stopping as Luffy flies over him, turning, and looking up to fire. Then he's in the proper position when he gets punched. There's no problem that I see with it.
The problem is that when the PX5 flies towards him it's not skimming over the ground, it's moving as if shot out of a cannon, and is at an angle and velocity that could have sent it soaring over the ruin Luffy stood on. It then fires another laser straight ahead, which would have hit Luffy dead on- again showing that the pacifista was flying straight towards him, upwards.
Then Luffy jumps it, and it's skidding across the ground.
Unless it can suddenly alter its trajectory and inertia and fly down at a 45 degree angle, thats not possible. The way it was presented it could've flown into the mangrove.Still not as dumb as the barrel roll though.
-
the episode was awesome!!!! Luffy was sooo bad asss!!! LETS GO TO THE NEW WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I don't want to sound like a broken record and jut release what everyone else said…but Luffy pumping the blood in his arm and going full body gear second is a huge disappointment because:
Just activating it in a bodypart with his will shows he mastered his devil fruit.Pumping like pre-TS was cause he was raw and was improvising attacks.
And I don't like that Luffy glowed red...in the color spread,it shows that just steam
Comes out,he doesn't become shiny like before. An other way he's showed mastery.... -
I don't understand why Luffy going red is bothering people with Gear 2.
Everything your upset about is based off of an assumption from the manga.Did we ever have any 100% proof that Luffy's body didn't react to the use of Gear 2?
Based on how Gear 2 was explained by Oda, Luffy's body has to react. The point of this scene was to show that Luffy can activate it anywhere on his body. Every time prior to the Time Skip, Luffy always had to activate it in his legs. Did that eman that it was confined to his legs? No. So why should activating it in his arm confine it to only his arm?
I just think everyone mistook what was happening in the manga and ran with it as if it were fact.
I'm sure Toei checked with Oda. Because if they were to do it wrong, it would screw a lot of things up. -
Yeah can someone tell me where in the manga its specifically stated he partitions it?
-
I think his whole body turn red in G2 no matter what. We're just not able to see it in the manga. (in the color spread I think it looks like his body is a little red)
In this episode yes the whole body turned red but the smoke was only in his arm. They got that right.
-
in the manga luffy only activates gear 2 in his arm. we can see the smoke/steam in his arm only when he one shoted the pacifista.
-
@Baou:
And I don't like that Luffy glowed red…in the color spread,it shows that just steam
Comes out,he doesn't become shiny like before. An other way he's showed mastery....Luffy turning red after using Gear Second was an anime-only thing to begin with. You see, on the covers for volumes 40 and 44 from the Enies Lobby arc as well as the colourspread you mentioned, you can only see smoke while Luffy is using it, but his skin is completely normal.
Anyway, it's just a detail, nothing for me to complain about. -
So,what's gonna happen when Luffy:
! Has to do a quicky G2 against the giant pufferfish guy while riding Magelo
! Or against Hody in the bubbleIf Luffy activating it like this is only in this episode and the next times,it's the proper way, then I'll be okay…
-
and btw in the last chapter we can see clearly that luffy is using gear 2nd only in his arm.

I'm sure Toei checked with Oda. Because if they were to do it wrong, it would screw a lot of things up.Luffy's skin, in the manga, doesn't turn reddish. It's just steam coming from his body.
Therefore, when he activates Gear 2nd in one of his limbs, the steam only comes out of that limb.
To show that, after the time skip, he had gained better control of this technique and that he can now contain it to a part of his body, instead of his entire body.

I don't like this Pacifista flying shit and then Luffy dodging three lasers. Makes the lasers seem slow or that Luffy has FTL reactions. Didn't the Pacifista have a slash mark on its clothes after Zoro cut it? Overall good episode but honestly Caribou was my favorite part.
I don't think it was either. I think it was meant to demonstrate haki. The laser wasn't slow and he doesn't have faster than light reflexes he just knew the laser was coming. I'm guessing that's why he said too slow because anything you already see coming is going to be too slow to hit you. And I don't think the Pacifista was flying. I just think it jumped really hard.
-
My biggest complaint is with Sanji and Zoro. The injuries to that PX7 don't seem so severe, especially Zoro cutting him fatally through the torso. It loses the impact, and makes it appear that Sanji and Zoro needed to team up to do the work that Luffy did alone.
…or, on further viewing and using a pause, it's impossible to tell that Zoro cut him. It's a nice detail, but I fear many people won't notice it!
Still, I agree with tatermoog, this is the time skip! I can't hate it just cause the animators decided to get silly and make the Pacifista fly. The expression on those dumb pirates faces as Luffy destroys a pacifista is still too great.
-
I like the extra touch of the Pacifista launching itself into a spin

Ok guys since I'm an Apforums user I believe I should spread my negative thoughts onto this awesome episode to gain respect from others. I mean this episode was alright, but you know. The circles looked too, circle-like. But all-in-all it was O.K. If the next episode continues like this I guess I can live with it. Also, the squares were too big, they should draw better.
/sarcasm.

-
In addition to reiterating my previous post, I'd like to add that, just because they embellished a little bit in the anime, doesn't mean that future manga is entirely invalidated. Maybe Luffy can, given ultra precise control of his Devil Fruit, make just one part of his body engage in G2. And maybe Sanji can engage DJ without spinning. That doesn't mean that they can't take the "easier" route just to take care of some nameless fodder.

And, before, when he generated Gear 2 in his legs, wasn't the steam just eminating from his legs and rising up,. thus making it look like his whole body was steaming.
Of course, I still don't understand how Luffy can steam at all, but that is besides the point.

Nope.

Nope. He would simply pump his legs, and the steam would rise from all over his body. Not just his legs.
Of course, I still don't understand how Luffy can steam at all, but that is besides the point.

^^^^^This.

Beautiful!
I loved this episode, yeah Animation was off in a few places but nothing too bothersome, Robin's face anyone?
Luffy's feet?!But still! It was awesome and I can't wait for next week
-
They reversed the punch from the manga to the anime for whatever reason. I feel like this is a continuity error.
Manga = Luffy goes gear second in his left arm and punches with his left arm
Anime = Luffy goes full gear second using only his left arm and punches with his right armOverall tho, great episode, I enjoyed it a lot! especially the "Too Slow" scene!
-
Outside of Luffy's whole body going Gear 2nd and maybe some slow scenes before the Fake Luffy events, this was an excellently paced and animated episode. I honestly did not care that some of the characters were given a slightly wonky art design–It especially worked for Caribou and all of the super-deformed images the Fake Strawhat, which brings their freakishness to a whole new dimension.
But outside of the minor nit pics, the animation had a great attention to detail and direction, my favorite being the expression of the crowd changing in the blink of of an eye, just as the "shockwave" of the dust-cloud passed the crowd. Another are the increasingly distorted images of Fake Luffy's face just before he is KO'd, as his increasingly desperate attempts to hype himself up are shown in increasingly bizarre angles. It is so much more effective than the a shot of a static frame of him simply flapping his lips (something the series often does when cutting corners).
I hope to see more if this animation director in the future, and with the odd-looking fish-folk coming up, it'll be right up his alley.
-
The last few episodes have re-kindled my love for Caribou and Coribou!! I loved the closeup shots of Caribou's face when he declared war on the Marines
I also loved the close-up shots of Fake Luffy taunting Sentamaru.Just his face is so funny!
And I loved the fake StrawHats going into a mindfucked-induced seizure over seeing Luffy!
And in this episode,it seems that Lip Daughtry is a 'power-type' the way he's plowing down people with his really really cool saw weapon. And Albino is a 'speed-type' the way he's 'soru-ing' fodders with his wolverine claws and knife.
It was also funny that I was in a bookstore and looking at American shounen jump and the one piece chapters were if this episode.

That post was hilarious thank you. While there are minor nitpicks for the episode, it was amazing overall. The good vastly outweighed any pacing for me. The best part of the episode for me was when Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji were together. Luffy was just so excited that it made me tear up a bit.
-
I dont like how the Pacifista's were spinning and flying around, they didnt do that in the manga and it looked stupid overall.
Also, in the manga he was standing in front of Zoro/Sanji and about to fire with his hands. Here, he just flies over to them….while spinning.
-
One thing I fail to understand is…
How on earth is it that Luffy is not able to recognize that Zoro and Sanji are not real. We have seen already that haki will let you do that.
P.S. if there was anything that bothered me in this episode it was, Zoro's Sanji's fight.
It is potrayed imo way too serious, some people might even see it as a real fight. They just pick on eachother in the manga but there is not any serious fight and here they are both sweating and all serious.I get it that this is anime and that it is like that just for the lols but it bothers me anyhow
-
It's for comic relief. Simple. Found it more annoying than funny, though.
-
You mean Luffy not noticing, same here.
Good episode overall
-
Fucking hell I'm only halfway through but so far this has to be the best episode of OP that I've seen. Beautiful animation, great fluid movements, Caribou is fucking mental (and I LOVE it), good fillers… Wow.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
I actually laughed both times Sentoumaru hit Fluffy in the face. What's up with this outstanding episode?! I can't help but smile through it. So good.

Fucking excellent. 'nuff said.

Did anyone else feel that they're trying too hard to make 'We Go' the new 'We Are' by using it as BGM. I love the song now, but it was misused in this episode, there is much better BGM for those scenes.
-
We Go is the new We Are. I thought the song fit the moment perfectly, reminds me of the times when We Are was used in the background. Epic moments such as going up Reverse Mountain, or being shot up into the Skypiea. I can see We Go being used in those moments throughout the second half of the story.
-
Excellent episode, but I definitely felt gypped by the exclusion of Rayleigh's tears. Sure, the scene was also extended in the manga, but the chapter did end with Rayleigh in tears and Zoro and Sanji smiling at Luffy's words. I'm sure the impact of the scene won't lessen just because it was pushed back a week, though…
-
Awesome episode
Many says that they are dissapointed that the pacifista wasnt cut in half, but it was! If you paus before the pacifista explode us can see that it was cut in half. (I'm sorry if someone has already said this)

He's going to tear up in the next episode. It was in the preview.
Edit: Somehow the first time I read your post, I didn't see your last line, haha.
They'll probably start the episode with Luffy screaming "Rayleigh! I'm going to do it. I'm going to be the king of pirates," and then Rayleigh tears up.
Is that how the manga worded it: "I'm going to be the king of pirates"?

Episodes like this one make me want to see the upcoming battles animated. This was awesome.

More or less .

I thought the episode was really good, the battle scenes between the marines and the fodder pirates was very well done with some actual battles going on rather than the generic clashing of swords we usually get
luffys scene with the px was too boss
