Not sure what I'm more suprised about:
That VIZ isn't dubbing the series or that there are three actors that I've only seen in 4Kids dubs (aside from Dan Green)
I wasn't sure how Mashiro's VA was going to make him sound, but now I'm sure that he'll get a similar voice to the one his VA gave him in the dub of Summer Wars.
Season 2 premiered yesterday,
I wonder how far the anime's going to go this time. The only stopping point I can think of is the conclusion of the Nakai plotline, but that would be kind of a downer to end on.
Chapter 149 is out.

! Ahahaha, Nanimine got smoked by Azuma-Sensei. Oh Nanimine you arrogant little clod, hopefully this is the last time he appears, since he lost the bet with the Cheif-Editor and can't publish in Jump anymore.
! Kosugi hit a very important nail on the head there, that the computer monitors are not fans of Jump, they don't buy and read the stories.
! Kinda confused about Azuma-sensei's Hirapara Paridise story. It was a one-shot to temporarily replace Hiramaru (who dislocated his hip) so, technically, did Hiramaru also win as well? Can he be called KAZU-TAN now??! crosses fingers
The Heart.
! Hot damn, I loved how Ashirogi not only managed to beat Nanamine, but also Azuma. I like that.
! Although the whole "it doesn't have heart" thing was cheesy. Also, did anyone else get horrible Near flashbacks when Nanamine was playing with those darts? Or is that just me?
! Oh and Aoki being told that she couldn't win is a bit of a let down. She seems to keep getting pushed to the side.
! Oh well, I still liked this chapter.
I'm still scratching my head a little bit that this is the first time that it's occured to them to review their old material to come up with new plot threads, but whatever.
! Nanamine's collapse was handled better than his last one, while was entirely ''tell don't show.'' This operation of his was destined to fail from the beginning, and having himself be outdone by both Mashiro and Takagi and the guy he tried to screw over, Azuma, was certainly a lot more satisfying than the heroes simply doing the same thing they have all along.
I'm still scratching my head a little bit that this is the first time that it's occured to them to review their old material to come up with new plot threads, but whatever.
I'll give them credit, at least it's better than their usual strategy of "make a better story with a good resolution to whore out the ratings". Though I'm definitely not arguing that they should've considered their past chapters for once.
In all honesty I would prefer a manga about the greed of human nature to the heart.
But this is Shonen Jump's Bakuman we are talking about.
! Wow, phoenix wright the manga won, it's about time.
! Aoki should manage to get 1st place once in a while, I don't know, the beta couple of her manga finaly manages to become an official couple, or even the main couple.
! I don't know how one can dislocate a hip. it must be PAINFUL.
! Good resolution.
! I don't know how one can dislocate a hip. it must be PAINFUL.
Hirimaru finally found a way to get out of work after trying so hard for years.
! Also, did anyone else get horrible Near flashbacks when Nanamine was playing with those darts? Or is that just me?
! Hmm, I thought L threw darts?
! Well, whatever, good chapter. Honestly, I'm quite glad to be done with this arc and that it had a satisfying conclusion with Azuma beating out Nanamine.
! Also, I loved that page with shots of all the artists working hard, contrasted with Hiramaru and Nakai lounging about.
! And hey, Azuki cameo!
! Lol, Hiramaru dislocating his hip is funny considering that he probably did it when he was all happy about Aoki calling him Kazu-tan if he won.
! Successful ending to a drawn out arc~
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-10-03/backman-x-sket-dance-crossover-anime-episodes-planned As already said in Sket Dance thread: Say what?
The Sket Dance anime is certainly getting around, isn't it?
Sket/Bakuman is weird enough. Doing it for three full episodes is exponentially weirder.
Roman will be the main character of those episodes of course, she is the only character that fits.
They have that manga artist character, the one that's the avatar of the actual author, too.
I don't know, Gintama and Sket Dance were a perfect fit, in both ways.
Medaka would work under the sket dance seting, well ALL manga would work in the sket dance seting, but the other way around it's weird.

Right after I drop Bakuman for Sket, Bakuman comes to troll me.
Dude!
Cool chapter. Glad Azuma beat down Nanamine like I wanted. Didn't really like the Ret-con strategy though.
Also, who was that girl Mashiro was texting? She doesn't seem very important.

I fail to detect any sarcasm in your post, so I'm going to assume you're serious. It's Miho, his girlfriend that he doesn't want to see until after both of their dream accomplished.
I'm afraid it's time you took your sarcastometer into the shop then.
There's a Chinese scanlation for chapter 150 out.

Seems to be a lot of focus on the editors in this one.
Chapter's not out but I read the summary.
! I have the feeling that the story is actually coming to an end, and that was even before I read the spoiler summary with the guy from mangahelpers saying the same thing.
@ultimateclima:

Thats what we thought right after our leads got their current series running and had an anime offer., and that was 40 chapters ago.
As a slice of life comedy this could largely run indefinitely, but most of the current character threads have been wrapped up. Nanamine has been beaten utterly, Fukuda has a series he really loves, Hirimaru pretty much got his ideal girlfriend with Aoki, Eiji finished his series the way he wanted, Nakai came back and returned to the game… Even the homewrecker could be considered wrapped up after her one chapter a few weeks back where she foudn pride and was backed up by the rest of the crew.
Obviously, the leads getting an anime, followed by a wedding is the biggie... and properly beating Eiji regularly.
All that said, while the series could go forever, I would actually like it to end sooner, rather than later. I love it, its my favortie series running aside from OP, but its had a few weak arcs in a row, and its starting to repeat itself some, and can only go so far with what they can do... So I'd prefer it ended strong rather than drawn out.

Pretty much. Almost everything since PCP getting serialized has felt like filler. Although it is a slice-of-life manga, it is one in which the characters have a defined (if not idiotic) goal, so each arc should advance the plot or, as you said, a character's story thread.
Now, Hiramaru's antics are starting to wear a bit thin on me. Which is a bit disappointing. Still I laughed when Kosugi mentioned he dislocated his hip later on in the chapter.
But yeah it was pretty good. I'm surprised Nanamine was so utterly trounced, but the reason given really made sense honestly. Wonder what the dude'll do next?
[Insert joke about Mashiro talking to new never-before seen mystery girl here.]
I think the point you realize that its time for it to end, is the sudden realization that, rather than Hirimaru's antics being the one page mega highlight winning moment of every chapter… at this point they're stale and annoy a little bit instead, because we've seen his editor tricking him and Hirimaru knowingly going along with it 30 or 40 times in a row, with the exact same punchline every time... so even that has gotten old instead of being the standout it once was.
They really need to mix it up some.
Or, at least, have the leads get an anime so the wedding thread can be done with and things can switch up some.
Hah. I knew they would do this, when I heard the real Sasaki got replaced by the real Heishi. It's a lot like when they mimicked the "Battle of the Super Legends" thing in Jump and did their own version if it. A neat chapter, I loved the Heishi stuff.
And I think you guys are right about the "it's heading to the end" stuff. The second Nanamine arc ended, and now it looks like they're going to go into a "Eiji's new series VS Ashirogi's new series" arc.
Speaking of which the new chapter is out http://www.mangareader.net/bakuman/150/2
! My favorite part was Eiji having a bunch of globes with faces on them. I thought he was just drawing on one.
! It's the montages of the little things from the very beginning that's making me think it's coming to a close. It gave me that ominous feeling that it's ending. Plus, the fact that the next arc seems to be setting up Eiji vs Ashirogi Muto again. And having them win will probably let them achieve all of their dreams they set out to do barring unexpected developments.
! Yeah, I also really hope this is the last arc. The entire chapter I was wondering what the point was since it seemed to be rambling with no real purpose, and then finally it set up Eiji vs. our leads for another showdown. And like Robby said, the Hiramaru part seemed almost like fanservice or something thrown in flippantly.
! The only parts that really had the soul of Bakuman were Eiji's globes and the page with the new chief.
! Lastly, does anyone else really want Eiji to win?
! The entire chapter I was wondering what the point was since it seemed to be rambling with no real purpose, and then finally it set up Eiji vs. our leads for another showdown.
! Well, granted, the EIC leaving is a pretty big deal. But yeah, glad we're going to get to see Eiji's supposed magnum opus. Hmm, a "dark hero" (Japanese Batman, perhaps?).
! Oh, and I loved Heishi putting his coat his coat on like a badass, quickly followed by him being all giddy with his wife.
Heh. Figures after talking about the reasons for doing it for four chapters… Bakuman itself would then go and do a "one shot that isn't a one shot", that draws upon all the earlier history and continuity to both set up a future story and the past, while being... a standalone chapter.
They constantly talk about things to do to change a manga or do a standout chapter... then go and do exactly the same thing in the real story. They're very meta like that.
! And both the leads and Eiji planning on doing a "cool super dark hero" with a new series that they're doing while still doing a secondary series… well... that's as blatant a direct competition as they could possibly have. This really just might be heading for the end.
! And rather enjoyed the Hirimaru bit, since it was Aoki getting the punchline this time and messing with him. Very cute.
! Hmm, a "dark hero" (Japanese Batman, perhaps?).
Drawing panty-shot filled manga for years on Weekly Shounen Jump, then moving to seinen magazine sister publication Weekly Young Jump to do an awesome, fabulous, gritty and violent batman-like "dark hero" manga.
….. wrong author, sorry.
But seriously though, deja vu. Big time.
ZETMAN's premise was a "dark hero" tale that questions the foundations of "good vs evil", and the one-shot of it ran in WSJ.
But the editorial didn't like it, since they wanted a simple "good vs evil" theme in WSJ, they felt it was inappropriate for the magazine.
This was back in 1994, long before Death Note though.
Katsura didn't just leave Jump, he took his work to the seinen magazine, and is still currently serializing (although the manga is on hiatus when Katsura started working on Tiger & Bunny anime series, where he does the character and costume designs. Rumor has it he's currently working on the 2nd T&B series). And god, he's doing a FANTASTIC job, it's one of the best hero manga I've ever read. I'm eagerly awaiting his return to the manga, although I also liked T&B so I can't complain.
The editorial are completely different than back then, especially post-Death Note, so the concept of doing dark hero manga in current Jump is very intriguing. Even in fiction.

Uh…..what?
When was it ever indicated that Crow was filled with panty shots? And since when is Batman necessarily the equivalent of seinen material?
At any rate, all I meant was that Eiji could create a cultural icon with a dark streak, much like Batman, perhaps the most famous and admired superhero in western culture, who also has a dark streak.

Aohige was talking about a real mangaka, not Eiji :)
I don't know if any of you already know this, but Bakuman's author, Ohba, is probably Hiroshi Gamō. Both he and Ohba share the same birth date. In Bakuman Nobuhiro's manga, Chou Hiro Densetsu , came out in 1996 I think, the same year as Gamou's manga.

You totally missed the joke. :ninja:
I was talking about a certain mangaka whose "dark hero" manga wasn't accepted in WSJ, and moved to a sister magazine to serialize it. Just like the attached tl;dr explained.

Yes, it's a common knowledge. There's literally dozens of evidences to prove it.
^Really? :O
Please tell me.
^Really? :O
Please tell me.
The comic by Mashiro's uncle they keep referencing is INCREDIBLY similar to what Gamo did years ago… and in the trades they show the rough draft storyboards... and the sketches in there are in his style.
I agree with Aohige. Dark Super-Hero mangas don't work in the Shonen Jump format, except as gag mangas. Neither do Evil-Villain Mangas, for that matter. Can you imagine if Hellsing had run as a Shonen? Any of the Anderson vs. Alucard fights alone would have blown Parent's group's minds. There's a point where Seras gets her arm ripped off by Zoren Blitz, only to retaliate by ramming her head into a wall and scraping it along said wall until that side of her face becomes ground into dust… yeah, there are certain things that aren't meant for Shonen. I have a feeling that Eiji's new comic will start off strong, but get shut down by some parent group. They've only addressed the subject lightly with Trap a few chapters ago; they really need to show the limits of what you can put in Jump by actually having a series shut down because of content.

both Eiji AND Ashirogi are doing dark super hero stories. So they'll both be facing the same hurdles and targeting the same audience.
And second series for both teams Its an even a playing field as they're ever going to get.
Tho I'd rather Eiji did manga Calvin and Hobbes.

Something like… Q and A? A direct port of Calvin and Hobbes would be really awkward, unless it was an episodic gag manga like Dr. Slump.

Uh, but aren't we assuming that Ashirogi is also going to still be working on PCP while creating their new story?

Man, I dunno, I really liked Nanamine. The fact he came back again was great, but his second defeat was just as lackluster as the first. It wasn't his method that did him in, which was nice, I guess. I don't like the way his character arc ends though. I really hope we see him one more time at least.
Other than that, I really liked this chapter as a whole and I'm looking forward to the coming arc. I wonder what'll come of it.~
Nanamine is like… he's like Hody, in my eyes.
Much too ineffectual, much too self-destructive, much too arrogant to be perceived as a credible threat.
Nine times out of ten, he'll shoot himself in the foot and then ask himself without understanding why he can't walk; why his legs are bleeding.
This arc proved that even though he learned from his last mistakes, he learned the wrong lessons. His entire premise is wrong. Has been from the start. If it were about supporting older authors and giving them a second shot it would be another matter, but they were just tools for him to use and toss away. People never were anything else to him. Editors and authors both are objects to Nanamine. His style of making manga is unsupportable, fiscally and morally. And in a story about the earnest passions and efforts of JUMP mangaka and editors following their dreams, Nanamine didn't have a leg to stand on.
I sorta wish that he'd learned a lesson in all this: that Kosugi had finally told him off, that Ashirogi left him with some choice words of sage advice. But I suppose in this case the authors felt he was beneath that kind of acknowledgment. Absolute denial of all that he stands for is all that needs to be said of types like Nanamine Toru.
