I don't get why this holiday is necessary. It's not like being a woman is an achievement or anything special. As long as it's not connected to any historic events I don't see the point. It's like having a world water day.
Alright, enough buzzkilling. Continue with your jokes, pics, cliches and tongue-in-cheek sexism.
EDIT: This post sounds really douchy and cynical but I honestly didn't want it to seem that way. I like celebrating so I have nothing against this thread or this day. It just doesn't make that much sense to me.

Who cares! It's MARDI GRAS, BITCHES!!!

Yummm!!
Roses for all you fellow lovely ladies out there!!!!
Happy Women's Day!!! -

Don't get your panties in a bunch, it does have a purpose, albeit kind of obsolete (in the Western world). It's all about awareness.
Until the 20th Century (you probably know this), women were oppressed, both socially and economically, so this tendency arose to make people (men) see that women could actually be of value to society. I also think it had something to do with bad working conditions of those days. Women were taken for granted and dismissed as useless to society, except for housework and factory labour, and they couldn't actually achieve anything. So some people decided this was wrong and thought women deserve equal chances, and by giving them an official celebration day, people would become more aware.
For our regions, this day has in fact become a little superfluous, but in third world countries women still don't get the chances they deserve. -
This is why there's still a women's day:

That said, this thread is a bit reminiscent of Rose's girly thread.
-
I didn't know about this day until I got on to Google.
Tsk…

.Just my two scents :) You are right being a woman shouldn't be anything more special than being a man but in this world socially and politically this is still not true.
Gendered social constructions and stereotypes still underlie almost everything.Heck some even argue that the gender neutral individual which people usually see as equality( in the workplace, citizenship ect) is inherently a gendered ideal of the male which women are asked to conform to. Blah blah I dnt want to preach to you my sociology lessons but yeah this is why I acknowledge(dnt celebrate it) this day.
Like Mrs Iceburg says it raises awareness about past struggles and I hope it becomes meaningful enough to raise awareness about the fight that still lies ahead for all women in this world to be on truly equal terms with men.

Considering other cultures and women's struggle throughout history it does make sense. However, hardly anyone seems to mention International Women's Day in that context. That's why I wasn't really thinking about it that way. Yeah, I don't think thoroughly before I post (especially when I'm sick).

It's not obsolete at all, even in the west, actually. The US is especially showing in politics lately that there is plenty of sexist attitudes going around. The media is especially awful in how women are still seen and the kinds of gender essentialist attitudes that prevail.
Men are more likely to not notice because they are not directly affected. So sorry but we are not some happy perfect and equal sunshine world only eighty years later

Until stuff like this (http://amptoons.com/blog/the-male-privilege-checklist/) actually becomes totally and completely obsolete, it'll stay that way.
(That list above, is targeted mostly towards White Males, since race/culture changes a lot.)

Well, yes, maybe all the more because of this.
People think women are treated equal, we always think gender discrimination is a thing of the past in our culture, but as you point out there are so much more things that have to change. Indeed especially in the media.
But I'm afraid that even International Woman's Day doesn't help this, maybe even on the contrary, it even seems to underline the differences and stereotypes.PS Sorry to make this thread go all sour :( Thanks to those who posted roses and food and little animals.

Hmmm I guess it's my bad for not giving a background on the day and its purpose in the first post but I didn't think it was necessary since as I said before, it's a day we discussed about in school (from Elementary till High School too) and I took it for granted that it was the same for other countries as well.
-
Well happy womans day. It's the only day you celebrate, while we, the males, celebrate the other 364.

You win for making me let out a high pitched "aaww >_<". Need more kittens though. Moar.
Since I, along with other women, apparently have some sort of authority today, I command one of you to do my work for today, which is tutoring grade 9 math. POST-HASTE!
DO IT, so I can stay home and play super mario world and street fighter on SNES :O
DO IT, or taste the back of my hand xO -

The timing of this day must of been arranged. I just got back from my cultural diversity class where we learned about sexism.
-
We actually had a whole class dedicated to Women's Day today. I don't really know what it is we celebrate, other than the fact that women are women.
Anyway, congratulations ladies! You are indeed awesome!
-
Women may be awesome, but men can pee standing up. That's more awesome.
-
Women can pee standing up, it's just incredibly awkward and hilarious to watch.
Also, I declare March 8 through March 6 to be Worldwide Men Day.

Chicks have a month? :wassat:
-
Then again, this is coming from a guy who forgot it was Nigga History Month a month ago.
-
Who keeps track of all the miscellaneous days and months anyway? The only person I know who remembered it was Pancake Day today was my mother.
