@JERK:
Goodfellas is a masterpiece in nearly all the same ways as Godfather, I think that's unfair typecasting it as the "fun" one.
But thats pretty much the point of the comparison. They're both really good, one is a bit better artistically, while the other has more one liners, but they're both fantastic movies and the fact that one exists doesn't detract from the other and neither is inherently superior in every way.
Of course, far as comparisons are concerned, there's always Star Wars and Annie Hall.
-
But Goodfellas and Godfather are super good in roughly the same ways. It's just maybe you don't notice in Goodfellas because how easily it goes down.
-
I suppose? Both Godfather films just feel really dark and somber and serious most of the time, while Goodfellas feels more… fun. Maybe its the tone of the narration that makes the difference?
Or maybe its just me and Animaniacs is to blame for shaping Goodfellas in my head for a decade before I ever actually saw it.
-
I find the (first) Godfather a lot more warm and friendly than Goodfellas.
The way I've taken to it recently is, regardless of how bloody and awful it's crime, that the family story is a strong and really nice one. That actually is really admirable in some ways.
No argument about Godfather 2 though, that's a dark movie.
Goodfellas is more fun and light on the surface. But it's much more frightening to me, the guys in it are mostly just amoral vessels of greed and chaos. Even Ray Liota. Sure it plays lighter, but these guys are scary shitty people and it ends with Ray Liota just wishing he could go back and do it all again.
The Godfather characters, even in the very dark Part 2, are motivated not by greed, but by kinship.
A Goodfellas scene shows the major murder as a crisis about cleaning a floor, disposing of the body, and cleaning the car trunk.
A Godfather scene showing a major murder ends with the young Vito Corleone returning from the deed to cradle his infant son and tell him he loves him.

I am rooting for Black Swan though the King's Speech will win this.
-
I think the King's Speech should win over the Social Network, but as for best supporting actor, I think Christian Bale did something masterful in the fighter and definitely deserves the Oscar.
-
I am rooting for True Grit, TS3, Inception and King's Speech above all.
-
I've been meaning to watch Goodfellas. OUaTiA is I think a harder to get into movie than either Godfather or Goodfellas but I personally liked it better than the Godfather.
Edit: I think I'm gonna download and watch King's Speech.

Yeah, I see your points. I can totally agree with that.
I should probably watch the Godfathers again, its been a couple years.
-

True Grit is a good western, though I am a bit disapointed the Coens brothers didn't add more of their crazyness. I liked when things get totally out of control for the main characters of their movie, which wasn't really the case in this one.
-
Just finished The King's Speech and think that it totally deserves best picture. Here's hoping.
-
So which of the FOREIGN FILMS do you guys think will take it home?
I'm sort of thinking Biutiful, or In a Better world, have the best chances.
Incendies seems more the darling out of all the finalist films, but it's pretty difficult to ever gauge who wins these. At least to me!
-
Man I need to see more foreign films. The few I have seen in my life have all been exceptional.
-
The Oscars aren't a good indication of what's actually the better films outside the English speaking film community, for the record. It's only a consolation category, since the Oscars are all about English-speaking films and it's a way of saying 'but look there's stuff out there in other languages!' They also only ever get certain types of films in the category. Not saying it's worthless necessary, since if it gets attention to deserving films that's still good. But it's not very extensive and it's very narrow in scope.
If you're interested in like getting into branching out and getting your bases covered, you're better off examining classics from regions and countries. Just pick a country you think sounds cool and look into its classics. Chances are there's a recognized history to it. With foundations and film history established (this is vital to French cinema btw, which in turn can be applied to influences past that and so on), watching more contemporary films from the respective place can be pretty meaningful. Of course you could always watch a movie like 3-Iron without seeing S. Korean classics and still find it just as amazing. You don't need culture context to always get a film. I'm just being a big old snob on you and saying if you haven't seen much, then it'd be cool.
It's an investment of time, but quite worth it.
Holy Hell sidelines Oscar talk
-

@Holy:
Not at all.
It's a real shame Black Swan's nomination was refused because it utilises pieces of Tchaikovsky, because Clint Mansell's work on it was absolutely marvelous accompaniment.
The climax of the film was intense and the music swept you up in it harder than anything else could have. There were a lot of stars in Black Swan and Clint Mansell's soundtrack was easily the best of them.
I haven't even looked at what the "foreign" film nominations are, I just know Uncle Boonmee didn't get in. The category and its treatment tend to bug me anyways, not that I should be too tied up in what is basically the glossing over of fantastic films on what still is an English speaking award show.
I didn't really count Black Swan's score because I assumed all of the musical parts near the end were just taken from classic plays, so I didn't really take it into consideration. Those final moments of the film were really intense because of the fantastic score though, you are completely right about that.
I still think HTTYD's score was overall better though, because pre-Swan Lake, BS's score wasn't all that memorable.
-
@Holy:
So which of the FOREIGN FILMS do you guys think will take it home?
I don't know, I've only seen Biutiful and Outside the Law. I don't even know why Outside the Law was even nominated. The movie deal with an interesting period in history, but the plot and above all the one-dimensional characters are really underwhelming.
-
I think I will watch the Oscars. It's kind of thrilling.
And I can improve my english a bit.So who else will watch? Half an hour left.
-
I'm watching it for the first time ever (usually had school and stuff). Is gonna be a long night.
-
It begins!
The opening segment was pretty funny. Honestly, I had no idea that James Franco and Anne Hathaway were hosting. Didn't even bother to look it up.
And Alice in Wonderland wins the first award sigh :getlost:
-
hahahaha, the people in the chat going crazy on me cause I'm like 15 seconds ahead of them and spoil them with the winners XD'
-
Inception wins cinematography!
-
Alice in Wonderland had absolutely atrocious art direction. So it won!
Barf.
-
Man, Steinfeld should've won that oscar.
-
"it looked so fuckin easy OOPS!"

Apparently zany art direction=good art direction at the Oscars.

Family isn't ready to watch it. It's recording, but I'm going to be an hour behind.
Crap ass…:getlost:
-
Toy Story 3 wins best animated feature!
A trilogy not effed up ?, A franchise in which the team actually cares more about the storyline and not the dinero. It sure feels good to see a movie from another era being rewarded.
-
Inception can't win best original screenplay because Donald duck already did it and everyone loves Donald way more than di caprio
-
Best Foreign Language.
In a Better World
Denmark.
-
Gonna be honest, I wanted Geoffrey Rush (The King's Speech) to win. But Christian Bale (The Fighter) deserved it!
O-chan
-
Gonna be honest, I wanted Geoffrey Rush (The King's Speech) to win.
Same here. Although I haven't seen The Fighter.
Also, Geoffrey shave his head! Is that for PotC4?
-
Bale's perfomance in The Fighter was outstanding. It was a bit better than Rush.
-
Inception can't win best original screenplay because Donald duck already did it and everyone loves Donald way more than di caprio
I….I just can't fight this logic.
-

Pfft, none of the score from Social Network stuck in my mind. And that one clip they did play of it sounded like diarrhea. Inception or King's Speech should've won.
-
Sound Mixing for
Inception
:)
Edit: aaaand another one for Inception~
-

Soundtrack work doesn't have to be the equivalent of listening to an engaging album solitarily.
The entire purpose and construction of a soundtrack revolves around accompaniment.
Not to defend Trent Rezzznor, but it's not like you listen to dark ambient stuff and try to find catchy tunes.
