So our local streaming service put out the bond collection to help us pass the time during corona. So i've been plowing through the oldies up to for your eyes only, and just had to air some revised opinions.
Doctor no - I was honestly suprised by how much i enjoyed this one. Like despite the fact that little actually happens its never dull. The sexy girl felt a little shoe horned in tho, but i mean i see the appeal. I also absolutely love that sixities this is what the future will look like tech.
From Russia with love - Quite possibly the best one. I remembered finding the end really dull as a kid, but watching it as an adult the train scene is cinema gold. And this is the only bond where i could take spectre seriously. It sort of devolved into an austin powers parody as it went a long but the whole kronsten, klebb, grant line up was solid in this one.
Goldfinger - I never really got into this one. It had its moments, Oddjob is memorable, as is the i expect you to die laser scene but outside of the big moments it doesn't captivate me. Pussy galore is a good bond girl name tho.
Thunderball - I hated the underwater scenes. Like i get that they are impressive in execution, but i can only watch so many slow moving swimmers be spear gunned in the chest before i've got my permanent fill. And i mean the land scenes are nothing to write home about either, didn't care much for eye patch guy or spectres weird board room meetings.
You only live twice - Seriously what the shit kind of cringe fest is this even? Bond autisticly reciting the best temperature to drink sake at and putting on a bad wig to pass for Japanese makes me want to hide under a blanket. Weaboo Bond aside it didn't have much of a wow factor for me, Pleasance as Blofeldt felt off, the best fight scene was at the harbor but i mean it was a small scene in a sea of cringe.
In her majestys secret service - This one is hard to pin down. It has alot of things going for it, but its flaws stand out more for me. On the plus side i vastly prefer Kojak as Blofeldt, the action scenes were big, mood was good and Lazenby is good in the role. But the whole Bond gets married and the whole secret harem of doom killing the plants with their christimas presents plot was just a mess.
Diamonds are forever - Now i know i'm going to get alot of shit for this. But i really enjoyed this one, its silly fun and i just find those two strange hitmen oh so entertaining. Like i get why people hate it, it is really different and campy, but i can't help but smile when Connery drives off in a bleep booping moonlander. Also my favorite Blofeldt actor.
Live and let die - It is hard to take this one seriously. Jive talking pimps meets Roger i don't know what to do with his Moore. Also that annoying redneck sheriff came out of nowhere and people apparently liked him enough to bring him back. Tee-he was great tho, he, fat henchman and Samedi were fun. And what was up with that you banged the tarot reading out of me subplot?
The man with the golden gun - Probably the biggest missed opportunity in the series. This could've been so good, but it is all wasted on some halfbaked supervillain plot. The real meat should've been on Lee and Moore, not on boring thai dude and the solar macguffin. Also the man who wrote in that sheriff again needs to be flogged.
The spy who loved me - I loved jaws as a kid. And fortunetly i wasn't disapointed by this one on rewatching it. I mean what ever you feel about Moore you have to admit he hit every note here. Good villains, best bond babe, fucking Richard Kiel killing it before it all went to shit in Moonraker. I honestly can't think of any thing bad to say about this one.
Moonraker - Yikes. I'd think its fair to say that Drax is the least interesting villain to have ever been in a bond film. The whole thing is a mess, the whole nazi eugenics in space plot just bores, jaws mets a girl and falls in love wut? And all those pew pew laser battles just hits all the wrong notes for me.
For your eyes only - Viewed as a long set of stunts strung together by the smallest pretense of a plot this one is pretty entertaining. Bond driving Lupins car through some greek familys orchards and being chased by a pissed of eastern berliner down a bobsled course were great stunt scenes. I also get alot of mileage out of the Archer references. But plotwise its barely even a movie. Still like it tho.
Oh well like thirteen more to go
