Of all time for me.

^Close to being the same way.
Edit: Although I always hate declaring a single movie my favorite as well as ranking them.

I haven't really got anything against it. It's just not THAT interesting either, it's not a bad movie in a technical sense and the story is good. But the pacing is akward at times, a few roles are miscast in my opinion and overall it just just lacks "soul/heart/whatever you wanna call it". And yet i hear mindblowing and best movie of our lifetime/every made being thrown around at every corner.
And i just for the life of me can't see what makes this movie that good. A good movie yes, i can see a case made for a great movie, but best movie of the last 20 years my ass.

Your not really putting the best case on for team overrated here.
I said as well that it definitely has it's flaws but there's too much that's good about it to call it overrated - whether you like it or not.
A solid to great film being called the greatest thing ever made seems like a prety decent case for overrating to me.
I found it hard to follow at times; it seemed like it stormed through the plot like the audience knew what was going to happen and why it would happen. Bar that, I enjoyed it.
Oh really? I thought it was quite the opposite. That the movie felt over explained and slowmoving.
Always interesting how peoples experiences can be so completley diffrent.
Looking over a few additions I have to make a few comments:
-300: Definitely. Heck, throw in Sin City and you've got two overrated movies based on Mark Millar comics (having not seen Daredevil) The only good thing about Sin City was probably the last segment…even though I do admit Marv is a badass in the first part though made a tad too invincible at points. And 300...well, the whole movie for the most part.
-Napoleon Dynamite: So...what the heck was everyone making a big deal about? After buying in to the hype and seeing it on cable, it was probably the biggest waste of time I ever did. The only cool part was the big dance number at the end to Jamiroquai's "Canned Heat"...the rest was just...um...what?
-Admittedly I love "Princess and the Frog" because...well, it is a tribute to Disney's good periods, both the classic era and the Renaissance. That and I just love the whole world of the movie, from it's usage of New Orleans and it's musical styles to the relationships of the characters. I get some people's annoyance with the movie but I think it's usage of living in the past gives it charm.
Inception is probably a really impressive movie if you don't watch many movies. That's all I have to say about it.
I don't see what people have against Inception. Someone please explain it to me.
I don't have anything against it. It's just basically a very okay movie.
I have not watched Inception but it looks sweet. I have seen interviews with Nolan and I can't help but respect the guy for giving a lof of damn about the story in an era of 3d horse shit.
Inception and Social Network pretty much define "overrated movies"
I was really surprised by the good reviews The Social Network got (I watched it really early). It was just okay in my opinion. It was too long and the ending came really abruptly. However, when I watched Inception I was still amazed by it even though I watched it really late and the hype was getting annoying.

Napoleon Dynamite went hard bro. You're just too mainstream.
I really need to catch up with the "new" releases, i just saw Scott Pilgrim last night and that came out like a year ago.
Are there any other must see newies like the social network that i need to see?
I have not watched Inception but it looks sweet. I have seen interviews with Nolan and I can't help but respect the guy for giving a lof of damn about the story in an era of 3d horse shit.
But the thing about Inception is… It's not much of a story. It's more of an action-thriller and it's directed like a blockbuster one. That's what people should really care about, when it comes to it. It's basically a heist movie. It's an okay one and that's why I call it an okay film.
A lot of the perceived density of Inception is honestly superficial, or inconsequential, to its overall narrative. To call it one of the deepest films of the decade kind of irks me because it basically completely overshadows and tosses aside a lot of the great films that came out. There are all kinds of movies like Inception and you've got a pool of better films to choose from if you want to see "dream exploration", or dense dramas.
Not to mention I found nothing likable about its main cast, which is all the reason I care about exploring a character.
But really I don't mind if you like Inception and I won't bump with you about it. So in advance, I hope you don't mind me not liking it too much either.
I was really surprised by the good reviews The Social Network got (I watched it really early). It was just okay in my opinion. It was too long and the ending came really abruptly.
The reason Social Network is getting fantastic reviews is the same reason Mark Zuckerburg is Time Magazine's Person of the Year. This is the year that Old People have discovered facebook and praise it for being 'such an amazing networking tool.' It's something they find new and exciting (despite the fact that it's been around for a few years) and still don't quite get it, so they're going to love it.
It's got Ocean Walker syndrome.
"I don't understand it, but I'd better say 'I like it' because I don't wanna seem stupid!"
Inception is also an Ocean Walker.
I didn't find Inception that hard to understand. But it was awesome.
I understood Inception just fine, but my point is that people tote is an a "complex and deep movie." Holy Hell actually hit the nail on the head completely.
I really need to catch up with the "new" releases, i just saw Scott Pilgrim last night and that came out like a year ago.

Black Swan, True Grit, The Fighter.
Those are movies I intend to watch when they will be released in France.
After the hype of how mindblowingly smart it was i was expecting that i'd be running from the cinema clutching my brain screaming i can't take it.
Talk about underwhelming my expectations.

You're talking about Frank Miller, not Mark Millar. Mark Millar is the author of Wanted and Kick-Ass, which also got their film adaptations.
The Wanted comic sucks ass. The movie was good, though.
Mark Millar is just as bad at writing, don't worry.
Are there any other must see newies like the social network that i need to see?
There's a lot. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, The Chaser, 35 Shots of Rum, The King's Speech, Inside Job, 127 Hours, White Material, Mother… Lots of good stuff.
I'm thinking he's talking about movies that people know about.
@The:
Mark Millar is just as bad at writing, don't worry.
Nah, he has his fair share of good works.
Ultimates, Ultimates 2, Wolverine: Enemy of the State, Old Man Logan, Marvel 1985, Superman: Red Son and Superman Adventures are all very good.
Not to mention Skrull Kill Krew, The Flash and Aztek: the Ultimate Man, which he co-wrote with Grant Morrison.
I'm thinking he's talking about movies that people know about.
:(
But 2010 kind of sucked on the "good mainstream American" movies front.
The ones I listed are all movies that are considered worth seeing on an international front. I think nobody should ever consider movies that aren't from the US or well-known British directors "others", so I'm going to include them.
That thai movie seems really interesting, i'll have to try and get ahold of it.
And i'm not really attatched to only hollywood flicks, i'll watch most anything if you tell me it's a good movie.
I thought they were all documentaries since Holy likes listing those . If they're actual movies I might look a few of them up.
Man, I watch all kinds of movies. The reason I listed a lot of documentaries last time we talked overall films, it was because so far that year they were the only worthwhile ones I could think of.
But the year is over and I got my fill of "weird" films and good thrillers.
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Life is a great exploration of meditation and life taken from the eyes of a director who loves cinema. It is beyond surreal and requires a lot of patience, but if you can get into it you'll be greatly reward by a film that I can't otherwise call much but an experience.
The Chaser is a flat out wonderful thriller.
Take yo pick
I'll belive anyone has good taste, until they abuse that trust.

He has. However that doesn't excuse Wanted, Kick-Ass, and Nemesis (which I couldn't read past the first issue because Jesus Christ)
And Frank Millar had a few good comic runs in the 1980's, but his DARK AND GRITTY BOOZE AND WHORES gimmick wears thin
@Holy:
Take yo pick
I think i'll go with uncle and the king's speech to start of. If they hold water i'll devour your entire listing.
But i'm pretty sure i'll love the king's speech. I never get tired of well made british history dramas.
Aww, apparently Chugyeogja/The Chaser actually came out in 2008.
Fuck. It just got more overseas distrbution recently, so I made a mistake and thought it was a 2010 film since that was when I saw it.
In that case, I replace it with Vincere.
Or maybe Kokuhaku, which was kind of a good pop thriller if you can disregard how it is a tad over the top.
The only problem now is to get anyone to watch these with me.
My friends aren't exactly open to new movie experiences. Tried watching yojimbo once but they couldn't get over the pace or black and white.
T'was a bummer.
@Holy:
Aww, apparently Chugyeogja/The Chaser actually came out in 2008.
Well, that shouldn't prevent them from watching it. I really like those Korean crime-story, it really changes from what you usually see.
Yeah, South Korea is one of my favorite places for movies lately. Too many high-grade films were shot out of it this decade.
But if you really want to look around, there's good shit everywhere. Almost intimidatingly so.
On the subject of South Korea's success, I think I did a grading of Asian cinema of the decade recently based on my favorite films and I was surprised at how low Japan has been.
Edit: do we have a general movie discussion thread
so I don't like
super babble all over this unrelated thread and leave drool and hyperbole in my wake
@Don:
Die Hard 2..
Its sure not a bad movie but i would say it
s the weakest of the series.
Many claim that Part 3 would earn that title of worst part of the series, but beside the first part its definitely my favourite and i think it
s rly underrated.
People must be out of their minds to think "With A Vengeance" is the worst out of the series especially after "Live Free".
Borat.
I'd love to see someone defend it now that Obama is in office.
I don't think the matter of who was president of the US affected my enjoyment of Borat at all.
But I agree in the sense that it doesn't work that well when viewed multiple times, though. Still, one of the funniest movies I've seen.

Speaking of South Korean movies; did you watch I Saw the Devil? I read pretty much good reviews of it. I saw it (the movie, not the devil) and. . .hell, it was so f*cking intense. But my friends who saw the movie with me, said it was absolutely crappy. So, overrated movie or not? For me, it is not. It's intention was to be an unpleasant experience, and it succeeded.
Oh, and I'm such a Bandwagoner that I'm ashamed of myself, but really: Inception. Good movie, really, really polished. But was is SO ASTRONOMICALY GOOD about it? In fact, it wasn't that deep, nor that entertaining. It's a kind of a 50/50 that I must admit was really well produced, but failed at it's pacing and intentions. At times it feels rushed, at times it feels slow. At times it tries to be a pure action movie, at times it tries to be deep. I don't know, maybe if people weren't telling me day and night that it was the best movie ever made by human beings, then I wouldn't feel so damn. . .meh about it.
But I think I'm mixing "overhyped" with "overrated", although someone overhyping a movie for you is actualy overrating it, isn't it? Oh well, wathever. . .
Hm I'd never say that Inception is the best movie of all time after watching masterpieces such as Citizen Kane, The Lives of Others or White Heat.
But I dare to say that it was one of the better - if not best -movies in 2010. It was a meager year for movie fans.
Inception was really entertaining. I wouldn't go calling it really deep or profound or something, but it was tons of fun and the concept was innovative. Definately one of the best movies I saw in 2010.
People must be out of their minds to think "With A Vengeance" is the worst out of the series especially after "Live Free".
Die Hard 4 was an amazing action spectacle with Bruce Willis being his crazy badass self. It was a popcorn flick with no substance, but if you go watch a Die Hard movie for a different reason than HES FIRING A TRUCK INTO A HELICOPTER YIPPEE KI YAY, then you're doing it wrong.
Avatar - Cutting edge visuals, nothing other than that. Not bad cinema, but doesnt deserve all the accolades it got.
Titanic - Same as Avatar, except that first half was a snore-fest.
Slumdog Millionaire - I never ever got what the big deal was.
All Harry Potter movies except the first one.
Braveheart - It's awesome if you don't know history.
Thanks for correcting me about the Millars. Unfortunately both have made really good and really bad comics that I get them mixed up at times.
@Xai:
All Harry Potter movies except the first one.
? Columbus directed the first two. I found them very faithful; but obviously they were shorter. I thought Cuarón brought a breath of fresh air in with the third and even though I'm a continuity freak I loved it. And in retrospect, Columbus' actual idealisation of Hogwarts seemed very childish.
Goblet of Fire had them same thing; except 'Not enough time' syndrome started to kick in. Stylistically it was brilliant; but it was pretty awful apart from the Death Eaters scene at the QWC and the Graveyard Scene with Voldy where Ralph Fiennes was superb.
Order of Phoenix threw faithfulness out the window and went for style completely as there was way too much to fit in. Though the Dumbledore Vs. Voldemort scenes were spot on. Same with Half-Blood; it was slightly better but so far, those are the only two films in the series I think have been pretty shit.
The newest one is definitely not overrated though I can see why a lot of people would argue it is. It's mainstream so I could understand that labelling; but it is definitely more substance than style. From little details like Snape being able to fly without it being made a spectacle of.
Prisoner of Azkaban and Deathly Hallows 1 are the only Potters worth watching. The others range from kind of okay…ish (Columbus movies) to awful abominations (Goblet of Fire).
