EDIT: I apologize for not explaining clearly. THIS IS NOT WHAT I BELIEVE IS THE CASE IN THE WORLD OF ONE PIECE. It is simply a scientific reason explaining how it would be possible in the real world.
Alright so around 2 am I was thinking of whether or not a fishmen who ate a DF could swim or if a fish zoan type would be able to swim. I thought up a theory in which the sea inhibits certain muscle groupings and would allow fish DF users to swim. Using food science.
Alright so first we need to understand a little bit about myoglobin. Myoglobin is what distinguishes between dark meat and light meat in chicken. Myoglobin is a chemical within cells that takes in sugars from surrounding cells to use as energy and therefore is seen in muscles that require constant energy (are used for long periods at a time). These are called Slow Twitching Muscles. Myoglobin is red in colour and therefore cells with myoglobin appear DARK, like the legs of a chicken.
Cells without myoglobin lack the colour pigments and causes muscle tissue to appear white (I.E. chicken wings which can only sustain a VERY short amount of flight). These cells use the sugar WITHIN themselves as energy. Of course cells can't hold a lot of sugar so they are only used for quick bursts of energy. These are called Fast Twitching Muscles.
Now lets look at the anatomy of a fish. A fish doesn't need to support gravity seeing as it's neutrally buoyant in water so they do not need cells with myoglobin. Have you ever tried to grab a fish out of water? They seem slow until they dart away almost as fast as you can see them. This enforces the whole theory that they are made up of fast twitching muscles.
And now the anatomy of a human. We are mostly made up of Slow twitching muscle groups.
Now that that's explained, lets move onto One Piece.
When a devil fruit user falls into water, they retain consciousness and simply lose all energy and ability to move. Their fruit powers are not effected as shown when Luffy was thrown into the water during the Arlong park saga and the locals simply stretched his neck out to keep him breathing. So, When a fruit user falls in water, they just wait to drown due the the inability to get out of the water.
Time for more food science!
Hydro colloids are (to put it simply) substances that are evenly disperse in water. Much like milk which is butterfat evenly dispersed within water. Gelatin mixed with water would be another, much more relevant example. It thickens and gels a liquid, evenly dispersing itself in that liquid. Some gelatin substances, such as Agar Agar, are called reversible hydro colloids, And these are simply hydro colloids which can change between the gelled state, and a separated state.
So, (if you managed to read through all that and are still going, congrats) My theory is that devil fruits are nothing more than an incredibly potent, reversible hydro colloid that targets Myoglobin in a beings red blood cells when algae (another gelling agent present in sea water) is present in the human body.
When the being falls into the sea, the water which contains a catalyst (in this case, algae) sparks the chemicals within the devil fruit (the very potent gelling agent which is a reversible hydro colloid) to emulsify with the myoglobin in the beings cells, gelling them temporarily and ceasing them from collecting sugars from surrounding cells for energy and thus rendering any slow twitching muscles useless. When the user is pulled out of the sea, the emulsification in the users blood is reversed, and they are back to normal. This reaction takes a short amount of time to reverse as shown whenever a Straw Hat crew devil fruit user is pulled out of water, they are shown laying on their back on deck for a period of time.
Now, say a fishman, or a fish-type zoan user eats a fruit. I'm not sure about the muscle tissue in a fishman, but I'm sure they are able to live without their slow twitching muscles. Therefore, even if a fishman, or fish-type zoan user eats a fruit, the algae in the sea wouldn't trigger a chemical reaction due to the lack of myglobin, and they would use their Fast twitching muscles to move about freely.
Thank you for reading, let me know your opinions on my theory, and if your gonna quote this anywhere give me(Shnaw, or Shawn) some credit.
Due to the scientific nature and the fact that this theory actually makes sense, I believe it deserved its own thread.
It really doesn't.
I think you put a lot of thought into your theory, and that's admirable. Problem is, we're dealing with magical fruits that can make you stretch, turn you into a giraffe, or make you a walking black hole. Not to mention this is the series where being really confident in yourself allows you to read minds and knock people out by glancing at them.
Science be damned.
I think that if this were the case, we'd actually see a fishman who has eaten a DF.
It really doesn't.

You and I are referring to 2 different kinds theories.
The theorys in the thread you posted are what people think are the case in the world of one piece. Mine is something that I know is incorrect but is a scientific reason for why it could happen and could be found interesting by others. I should have stated that I don't believe this is the reason for the devil fruits sucking your power in water and I will state it in an edit after this response.
I in no way think that Oda knows enough about food science, or cares enough to come up with a reason like this. I'm sure if it is to be brought up in the series, all that will be stated is something along the lines of "the devil wants to suck you to hell, so he drags you to the ocean floor".
Alright, so all we really know about lafitte is that he can make his arms wings, hypnotize and has a cane. This has lead many to believe that he will fight brook, in a speedy fighter battle. However I have an idea on how his hynotizing and fighting powers work. I think that his hypnosis and fighting style will come from dance. He could use dances to entrance and confuse his opponents, as well as strengthen his own attacks. This would be an interesting and unique fighting style worthy of a final adversary, what do you guys think?

Because
and 2) It's long as hell.
If you'd like to point me in the direction of the, "Scientific explanations of the world of One Piece" thread, then please do so.
The irony is that the word you used doesn't supposed to be "doesn't", but "not".
¿Que?

Just to be on topic.. I think that Chopper will come up with a solution for Sanji's nosebleed. Every time he starts bleeding Chopper will show Sanji a picture of Kokoro and he will be physically okay...although probably not mentally okay :/
Spongebob can swim and take a bath underwater.
f*** science.
Wow. Down kiddies.
That's a really crazy theory. Congrats on thinking of all that lol.

That would be so awesome! If Oda did that I would love him forever, although I wold love him even more if h has an ugly mermaid actually join the crew.
Haha I actually think this is pretty awesome. Partly due to the fact that I felt smart because I actually understood what you're talking about xD (yay for the Animal Physiology class I took a year ago hahah)
I doubt many people would have thought this up lol good job :D

Haha, thank you =] It's crazy how much Animal Physiology and Culinary Sciences have to do with each other xD
Ace and WB's gaves are located on an island near FI.
The straw hats and Jinei will have a moment of silence for them.
when SH arrive in FI, they realize that the place have bee completely vandalized by the Kids pirate years before (huge magnet-destroyed buildings) , and that the Jimbei is recovering it.
the SH gets angry

Think it sounds great! Not sure about him fighting Brook, wouldn't this be too similar? Although admitedly it would be awesome to have Brook come in and own Lafitte's dance with music! Luffy is so susceptible to hypnotism, it would make a good save

Just to be on topic.. I think that Chopper will come up with a solution for Sanji's nosebleed. /
And this will be the moment Chopper will be recognized as the greatest doctor of all time.
Curing that disease seemed to be impossible, but Chopper never gave up and in the end saved one precious life.
Just awesome,Doc Chop!
I have a new theory
After luffy leaves fishman island the fishman pirates wil follow them and battle them
This doesn't make any sense. What he wrote makes perfect sense.
I think you're the real example of irony here.
oh, you

I feel insulted that people doubt my ability in grammar.

Eh, it would be similar, but brook might be the only person in the crew able to counter it. The BB crew is kind of darker versions o the SH crew anyways.
Sure, but the danger would be that a final confrontation would be too repetitive if everyone fought against a similar character. I guess that is just the way it is, eg, Zolo always fighting swordsmen etc and I am sure Oda will do it well, dramatically and innovatively

Well music and dance is similar without being the same. His hynotic and battle abilities coming from dance would be better than standard hypnotism which is what jango has.
I really wonder how dance and, more immediately, music is going to be portrayed and with what effect. Seems fairly limitless once you start thinking about how music has been used in other fantasies to elicit some kind of effect. Guess it would be fairly similar to Miss Golden Week. I just have no idea how a dance vs music fight would look!

Heh me neither, though this is all speculation at this point. Though based on lafittes look, dance is a high possibility. I bet his dances effects on people will be alot darker than goldenweeks though. Also I wonder how his fruit will tie in, though his fruit may be something he only uses against the strongest opponents.
Yeah does seem an unlikely combination, was it ever confirmed whether it is a flying paramecia or a zoan? If it is a zoan I can see some potential, but if it is a paramecia then I cna't really see how that would augment dancing?!?

Yea when I first saw it, I thought Siren zoan, but sirens are female and they sing rather than dance, so who knows.
Interesting! Although wouldn't it be harpy rather than siren? Would be good to see some more ancient and mythological zoans. Really hoping Kaidou is an ancient zoan to tie in with Drake.
What I am really hoping to see is the mythical zoan Behemoth - king of beasts that would be awesome! Any road, I am off so have a good weekend!

I didn't even think about Behemoth as i was looking at greek myths rather than biblical. That is definitely a yonkou worthy fruit.
Wow, this is an awesome theory.
I've actually thought about this for a while. I mean, it was more like a musing thought, but I came to a bit of a different conclusion, although when you point this out, it doesn't make sense. But then again, perhaps Oda will have a fishman with a DF and someone explains it, sort of like you did, but simpler. ^^;
Whooa, that certainly sounds pretty damn sick…that would be a pretty awesome fruit...
okay, i dont know if anyone has had any theories of dragon, so i'm gonna make one
dragon opposes the world government rite? has it ever been stated what pirate crew he was in? i highly doubt it was his childhood dream to start up a new group called the revolutionary to take downt he wrold government. my theory is that dragon was one of the big commanders in the gold roger's crew. after them finding about the rio poneglyph, which some people are saying is One Piece, and even if its not, after them finding it and reading it, the crew splits in deciding whether they should take down the world government or not. we can see from rayleigh's side, which would also be Gol D. Roger's side that they didn't. however, perhaps dragon and a part of the crew chose to. thoughts?
Who says Dragon has been or ever was a pirate? Think that would have been foreshadowed Garp was fighting his own son every time he went after Roger. If Dragon knows the history its either from working with the government first hand or his own adventure.
I am probably gonna be known as someone who likes everything he reads in the near future… but good... explanation.
I learned a lot from this. Thank you.
One question, when you say
incredibly potent, reversible hydro colloid that targets Myoglobin in a beings red blood cells when algae (another gelling agent present in sea water) is present in the human body.
Do you mean DF targeting Myoglobin is how they might be granting those powers or is that just a side effect? I mean I know science is irrelevant here, but just for the sake of argument, if that is how they are granting powers then the fishman wont actually receive power now would they? So… its like a side effect right?
good theory, you put a lot of tought into it.
first oda doesnt follow physics too much…
second i have 2 questions...
1. how could fishmen live on dry land moving fast if they only had Fast Twitching Muscles?
2. are you sure DF powers arent affected by sea?? becouse aces body became solid when handcuffed by sea stone (solid sea)? if you put logia in sea will he remain intangible? noone's sure how sea(stone) suppresses DFs
Fishmen would of course have slow twitching muscles.
/theory
yeah.. thats what i think too.
i didnt read it thoroughly but i got the impression that DF using fishmen could swimm becouse they have Fast Twitching Muscles thats why i asked the question
i think theres a whole threat dedicated as to how sea stone suppresses abilities
I just had a thought, which, if I don't type out, I will have forgotten in the next 5 minutes. We have seen that there are two layers (probably) to the bubbles that make the fishman islands and the space in between is either filled with air or water. We have also seen that one of the bubbles has something that looks like an entrance that allows a ship to pass through the two bubbles. The other bubble/s aren't clear enough to be sure but it doesn't look like it.they have an entrance.
So my thought goes like this; it would make sense to me if they used the bubbles as a defense against slavers. If the space in between the bubbles is filled with air than it would be impossible to use a ship to get into the bubbles because you would just fall right out again. So I suggest that the fishmen have one bubble open to trade and the rest completely cut off from humans.
That's pretty much it.
Edit: Is no one really going to respond to this? I'd at least like to know if I'm being an idiot and this makes no sense at all.
I am probably gonna be known as someone who likes everything he reads in the near future… but good... explanation.

Yeah I'm only trying to explain the side effect of being weakened by sea water. As for how the powers are actually granted, I don't even know where to begin assessing it. So this only refers to the side effects of the devil fruit.

Fishmen are evolved from fish so they initially had purely fast twitching muscles. They must have Slow twitching muscles otherwise it would be impossible to live on land like you say but at the same time, they wouldn't be able to live up to their reputation of being so swift in water without fast twitching muscles.
That said, perhaps they have a new muscle grouping which is a combination of slow and fast gained through evolution. Seeing as they would need both muscles to support their lifestyles on and off of land, I would see it as a possibility.
So, my best geuss would be that they have both fast and slow twitching muscles and can live off of either; or they have a new evolved muscle grouping that can function with or without Myoglobin.
As for the whole sea water vs. sea stone debate; I have seen different effects of sea stone and sea water. Like luffy in the arlong park saga, he is able to stretch while fully submersed in sea water where as any logia fruit users are nullified when shackled by sea stone. For the sake of this theory, I assume that these are two separate matters completely. If I dream up an explanation for the sea stone I will defiantly post it.
Thank you for your comment.
So, I just thought of something, since Heart is red in color, is used for longer period of time and is basically a muscle, wouldn't it be Slow Twitching Muscles and hence being a target to the… gelling. So, people who ate devil fruit when submersed in the water, according to your theory, should... kinda die.
There is this odd notion that I keep reading on various One Piece discussion boards that the Skypiea was the worst arc.
While normally I would just chalk this down to personal opinion, posters actually seem to think that the arc had no relevance at all.
Now as this is simply absurd to anyone who actually read the story properly and the arc being one of my personal favourites in One Piece, I thought I would put the relevance it held in this thread and I encourage others to contribute on any points I may miss:
It shows that the Strawhats are following along the path of Gold Roger, that they will be seeing the same sights he did during his adventure.
Shows Robin that the thing she is looking for is very real and that Roger found it.
Introduces Poseidon, another ancient weapon like Pluton
Introduces the Dials, a set of incredibly powerful weapons, that helps improves upon two characters abilities in later arcs
Introduces the damage that the Going Merry has taken, that the journey had taken a large toll on their beloved ship and that the possibility that it won't be able to sail is quite real
Introduces the stolen gold, a massive plot point for Water 7 and the events that occur in it
Introduces Mantra, a technique that becomes important much later in the story
Zoro develops new techniques, which help him overcome the crucial weakness of not being able to reach long range opponents without suffering damage or having to really struggle against them
So, I just thought of something, since Heart is red in color, is used for longer period of time and is basically a muscle, wouldn't it be Slow Twitching Muscles and hence being a target to the… gelling. So, people who ate devil fruit when submersed in the water, according to your theory, should... kinda die.
Wow, I kinda had an, "…oh shit" moment when I read that xD. Alright well theres different stages of gelling. Being a cook I'm pretty good with consistency and fluid gels and what not. The muscles wouldn't completely cease moving, but thickening would slow them down substantially and lower the heart rate to an almost hibernating state. So they wouldn't die, just their bodies would lose the ability to create enough energy to move, but enough energy to function. Until their lungs filled with water and they drown of course.
This brings up a good question of what a fishes heart functions though. I'll have to look into this.
Arlong Park is a bastion of Skypiea support.
I just sorta realized…
The women in amazone lily must be all lesbians
They're affected by Hancock's mero mero no mai, right? so they have "affection" toward her. beside, there's no men on the island, but they still must have needs. so it must be a norm in kuja society to be lesbian. so of course all kuja are affected by hancock's beauty.
and luffy's freaking asexual.
or gay........
weird, never thought of luffy that way...
The most typical complaint I've seen about the Skypiea Arc on this forum is that the pacing of the story drags in more than a few places.
@Hespia:

Actually no. The women of amazon lily go off to other islands to mate when they become of age and Hancock's fruit works on everyone man, woman, or homosexual. (it might even work on animals but i don't know) Also the reason Luffy isn't affected by Hancock's powers is because, due to the fact that he is rubber, her beams bounce off of him and hit her. Hence Hancock loving Luffy.
