Chapter 607: "10,000 Meters Under the Sea" Discussion

Heck, the murderous pirates in this story are as often heroes as villains. The entire Shandian vs Skypiean Holy War had a similar build up, and the violent murderous shandians were redeemed, why not the fishmen? Plenty of innocents died in the civil war in Alabasta without either side being morally evil. People fighting for "the greater good" kill innocents all the time, why should this conflict be any different?

No one died on camera during Alabasta or Skypeia. No one tied to the main characters.

The fishmen as a race can be redeemed, thats not a problem at all. Even Kuroobi and Chew, since they were only following the orders of the toughest most charistmatic guy around.

Arlong specifically though… nope, no way. Not in an adventurous shonen comic, not without getting a massive flashback dedicated to him specifically.

Even understanding his reasoning, theres no justifying what he did.

I guess that's where my misconception came in, I thought the whole beheaded thing meant the old fishman pirates are no longer around kind of a way to diss jinbei or something and that arlongs symbol would be the new fishman symbol, but your idea seems to mae more sense it's like a fishman hate humans thing and he was once part of arlongs crew but left before their defeat

I think Oda clearly will show us that this thinking the new fishman pirates are right now showing is the same the WG showed over so many decades.
By that the reader already knows that this kind of view needs a change, which leads to a better understanding between those two races.
We saw the WG acting like the fishman, and now those are buildoing up the same scenario and we even can understand those fishman.
But thats not how you solve a problem, thats how you make it to a war.
Thats why i think it`s important to bring up this second kind of view(from fishman) into the whole concept, to realize how hard it actually is to not act like the system you hate.

Arlong wasn't doing it to be noble. And he wasn't "fighting back." He wasn't taking revenge on those that wronged him, or secretly building up an army to take on the world nobles, or planning on using that cash to feed fishman orphans.*

He was doing it to be greedy and powerful in his own little world and live in luxury, doing everything he could to bribe his way out of being noticed while dominating and enslaving those weaker than him.

He could have gone to any island, in any of the blues. He could have stayed in the ocean. He chose to go oppress and kill those that couldn't fight back instead of doing something positive.

New characters can have the exact same goals, backstories and motivations without the needless enslavement thing going on and be perfectly sympathetic. Oda has set up the fishman plight perfectly well and it'll be easy to root for them. But not Arlong specifically.

Edit: Sure wait they are the new fishman pirates, i.e. the ones without Jinbe's leadership who have different ideals towards other races. So of course that symbol is the symbol of the pirates under Fisher Tiger and Jinbe since it was Jinbe who left the crew not the other way around so they are still the Fishman Pirates(just revamped). God I'm slow ¬_¬

Doesn't make it RIGHT. Whatever his motivation, he intentionally brought suffering to the helpless.

Jimbei didn't go out and start conquering weaker islands as retribution.

Fisher Tiger, far as we know, had the one great act of freeing the slaves, (and he freed the human slaves too) but then didn't proceed to go out and start conquering East Blue.

Hachi, who was even in his gang, apparently never hurt anybody and was generally nice and easy to forgive.

By killing civilians as opposed to taking on the actual problem.

He was not making any progress for his cause. A minuscule fraction of the world was forced to suffer because of him while the rest of the world kept on spinning. Arlong was pretty much ignored and he was content with that. He simply lived a life of luxury.

Fisher Tiger is the fishman who climbed up the Red Line to free all the slaves (including Boa Hancock), then made the fishmen he rescued into the Sunny Pirates. The Sunny pirates were given the sun mark over the tenryuubito hoof, so that they couldn't distinguish each other from slaves or people who weren't former slaves. When Fisher Tiger dies, Jinbe takes over but is then offered the Shichibukai status. Thinking it would make the WG take a tougher stance against slavery, he accepts and disbands the Sunny Pirates. Arlong and his crew were some of these pirates and because they were disbanded, they goes to the EB and the rest is in the manga.

Hachi is probably in his late 20s post-timeskip. I doubt he's older than 30, remember he was only a small child in StrongWorld. There's no way they could have a 20 year difference.
Besides, Oda doesn't seem to think badly of 10 year age differences since Hancock and Luffy have an 11 year difference.

Looks fine to me in terms of a proper definition. I would add in that the action is morally okay based on previous circumstances, but that's fine. So since that definition you've agreed to breaks down into two parts we can start with the first one.

Arlong's actions were reasonable? What a load of shit. As we've shown multiple times now, he was doing the wrong thing. It was an unreasonable course of action. Does it sound logical to you to enslave a village that had nothing to do with your problems? I thought the child abuse example given before was pretty good. It clearly wasn't reasonable. He was hurting innocent people.

Necessary? Certainly not. I guess you can argue direct confrontation with the government would be necessary. I wouldn't say so either cause he'd just get himself killed but whatever that's irrelevant. i really hope this point isn't argued. Clearly his actions weren't necessary at all in any way. The prejudice against a species or race or anything of the sort can't morally necessitate the prejudice of another group.

And please don't respond to this with, it was necessary in Arlong's eyes or it was justified in his eyes cause that is completely irrelevant.

Because it was never hinted that he enslaved a village out of revenge or to "fight back" the WG. He just did it out for the sake or enslaving, and like someone else mentioned before, he even bribed a corrupted marine to keep the WG out.

It seems to me that a large part of the debate here is coming from (or at least originated from) an issue of confusion between justification and explanation for actions. I don't believe anybody is trying to say that there is no explanation for what Arlong did, or that the history between fishmen and humans plays anything less than a significant role in that explanation. Realistically, no action takes place in a vacuum, and Oda is more than good enough as an author to convey that fact within his story as well.

When it comes to justification, however, the issue is on much shakier ground. Of course, saying things like 'this action was justified' is a highly subjective matter. However, since this is a place for opinions, I'll submit mine, and hope that it might find general agreement. Consider this hypothetical: People B are oppressed by People A. To me, People B fighting back in order to gain their freedom from People A is certainly justified. On the other hand, People B managing to gain the upper hand and turn the tables, oppressing People A in turn? This seems considerably less clear, and personally I would say is not justified. Finally, consider a third option, where rather than fighting back against People A at all, People B simply turn around and in turn oppress People C. There is no longer doubt in this case, to me: their actions are completely unjustified.

Now, part of what one's view on Arlong is would depend on which of the hypothetical situations he is more like, the second, or the third. In either case, though, his actions can certainly, at least in part, be explained by his people's history; it is simply claims of justification that are significantly more tenuous.

…That was probably long and ramble-y, but just wanted to add my two cents. It's an interesting topic of conversation, and I think it's great that something like it can come from, as is so often tossed about, "a kid's comic book".

Yeah. I noticed that was the big confusion in the argument up until now.

As far as Arlong's goals went, I think I remember hearing him saying that he was going to take over East Blue and then the world unless somebody wants to correct me on that. The fact is though that we only saw him take over Cocoyashi and he treated the humans there like crap, and it's not as if the WG was really going to care about one island they would probably blow up to kill Arlong anyway. A more direct version of fighting against the WG would have been taking over an island like Tequila Wolf and than freeing all of the slaves there.

You're right in that none of us wouldn't know if we'd do the same thing unless we went through it ourselves though.

It has been pointed out several times that he has not shown his weapon yet most likely because its a new weapon, and as of this chapter this seems to be true.

my guess is that the new wood from boin, and watever type of string he pulls back on gives stronger resistance that the old, weaker him would not have been able to budge. This, combined with dial power would give him the same or greater shooting range as Van Auger.

Man as soon as i saw the fish man pirates i saw Arlongs mark, and i got so excited, i thought Arlong was going to pop out or something, but he didnt :(. It would be epic if he does come into the story again.
