Well, officially Zoro is ALWAYS listed as "swordsman" only, so that's what i consider him to be. Most likely, the First Mate position will remain a fanwank thing forever.

Well she's the navigator, and with the weird stuff in the Grand Line that really gives her more authority than Luffy for the 99% of the time when they aren't fighting.

The crew works well without ranks or positions because each member of the crew knows the strengths and weaknesses of the rest, so they know who will handle what and can therefore concentrate on their own task.

Personally I am thinking about what will happen next and will Sentomaru fight with the SH's? As it is, I am seeing it like this:
He wants to fight Luffy. Rayleigh than tries to give Luffy a free passage but Luffy tells the others to go to the ship and he ll meet them there and saying something like, that he needs to see if him training 2 years will be enough by fighting Sentomaru.

Official or Unofficial…It Is What It Is It seems that some people are not for the rankings/labels of the crew members because it would be "against everything the SH's represent"…I think that having ranks WILL NOT change the SH's relationship with each other at all, it's just a label after all.
If Oda decides to keep the SH's "rankless" then I will be totally cool with that, in fact it leaves me, the reader, to decide in my own way. Whitebeards crew members were all considered his "Sons" that he loved equally…despite their rank. The same concept can be portrayed by Luffy in terms of family and nakama. I admit Luffy isn't the most organized and it would be weird to see Luffy, given his character, in a serious boss role...but who said it has to be so "serious"? The SH's have a unique relationship with each other and unique personality as a crew...none of that is threatened with ranks and Luffy being the coolest bad-ass of a boss could still keep that unique quality of the crew that we all have grown to love...even if it's just a label with no real meaning or effect.
Hell I would even accept if the world, WG, and/or the SH fans label the crew members for whatever reasons while Luffy & Crew pay no attention to it...
I guess in the end I am trying to keep the possibilities open as opposed to having people argue "it would never happen".
P.S. - When I say "ranks" I do NOT mean it in the way that would make a certain member of a certain rank better or more important than another member with a different rank. Think of it more as labels than anything else…everyone being treated, viewed, and loved equally despite being the Captain, First Mate, or Cook which is normally unorthodox for a "Ranked Pirate Crew" but that's what the SH's are all about...being uniquely different...who said they have to follow the rules? They make their own.

I can agree that Luffy loves his Nakama all the same but that has NOTHING to do with organization and ranking. Luffy can go on to label Nami as the navigator and Brook as the Musician…Chopper as the Doctor...etc....so what makes you think it is not within his realm of possibility that he would label Zoro as the First Mate.........

I think Luffy knows that each crewmember has the potential to take control over the whole crew in situations he isnt able to do so and thats what a First Mate has to do in my eyes. I think Luffy doesnt want to say it officially to someone, because every SH knows that the one who takes the lead in hard situations is automatically in that moment the First Mate and as long as noone is said to be it officially, everyone has the chance to take the word.
Zoro already showed here his potential at TB and also before the fight Luffy vs. Usopp but also Sanji and Nami already showed potential.

As for the rest of your post, I doubt Luffy is going to fight Sentoumaru. I don't think Sentoumaru is weak enough to be treated as any sort of fodder by Luffy, so any fight between them would probably drag out too long since they seem to be trying to leave Shabondy asap.

**There is a very clear hierarchy in the crew, it's just not emphasized much because none of the Strawhats let the power get to their heads. They act like a bunch of friends most of the time, but when the need arrives a hierarchy presents itself. Zoro is always the one that holds the authority when Luffy isn't around, and if he isn't around it's Sanji. The only exceptions are if they are doing something specific to a crewmember's forte, such a navigating. And those times are usually held in a less serious light than when Zoro or Sanji are in charge.
Anyway, the point is that Zoro is the first mate even if Luffy didn't officially appoint him. He was the first crewmember, is closest in terms of strength to Luffy, has always taken change when Luffy isn't around, always fights the second strongest, and was flat-out called the second in command by Urouge. Even if Luffy hasn't appointed him as the first mate, his actions and the position/authority he holds in the crew make him the first mate.**

sanji can take the lead but his main duty is chef
Nami can take the lead especially as the navigator but she is the navigator and they will do as the navigator tells them to do

I personally think Zoro still had his eye. His wound is just a fresh one and he can't open his eye just yet.

Yea its true shouldn't try to argue that but robins position is that of when the time comes she will have her use o course you are correct in saying most pirate ships won't have a archeologist but the rols been created which is still a proper role and she also acts as the crews info lady since most of the crew lack the experiance of the world. My argument about calling Zoro the swordsmen is that unlike the arheologist robin in the crew his role isn't unique in many of the pirate crews the majority will fight using swords same with the marines, but the role on the ship wouldn't be classed as the swordsmen but just as normal pirates or a specialist role they all carry out
Zoro doesn't take the role of a normal pirate as normal pirates pick up their arms and fight as told, as you and many argree we've seen him take up the role of first mate with issues like ussop in w7, TB as main real examples and then basically looking after the crew/leading it when luffy isn't available. Normal pirates with swords don't do that. we call brookes the muscian because thats his role he just also happens to fight with a sword we don't call him a swordsmen as a spcialist title dispite brookes specialist techniques, Zoro is a swordsmen but i argue that the role doesn't exist as a specalist role on a pirate crew, considering the majority of normal pirate crews will use a sword or gun.
But allas unless oda specifically calls him the first mate then its all opinion. Also i'd call it fact that luffy doesn't alway act like a captain maybe its why the bounty hunters mistook Zoro for the real captain. Another example of the first mate doing his job in making sure the crew was safe when captain was unable.

I'm with the people saying that there is no official first mate in the crew, and depending on the situation one of them who is best suited to handle it can assume the position of first mate temporarily… Unless someday Luffy clearly says that one of them is the first mate (and I very much doubt he ever will).

well..i'm in the grtoup that is certain zoro is first mate. luffy trusts zoro to no end (cept for certain joke moments). zoro's serious statements are taken as official commands by the entire crew (such as the usopp thing at water 7). and Zoro has displayed as the saviour of the SH , when he chose to sacrifice himself to Kuma in exchange of luffy's life. Sure, u can say Sanji did the same thing so why isn't he first mate, but Zoro knocked sanji out, showing that he is responsible for the safety of his entire crew; the job of the first mate.
^That's a pretty cute devotion to a character right there, but it's all opinion as long as Oda keeps saying Zoro's job is just being the Swordsman.
Also Luffy trusts the entire crew to no end.
I just want Oda to say either way, so this discussion can end.
He's not the first mate in name – and probably never will be -- but he has all the necessary qualities that make a good first mate. (Which is why so many other characters -- and readers -- assume otherwise).

Not the proper name, capitalized First Mate. He was the first mate, as in the first crewmate on the ship. Not First Mate as in Second In Command.
Something like that. The topic doesn't particularly interest me, but I got that much.
seeing Zoro was Luffy's first crewmember so he IS the first mate. Don't you all see? How can somebody else be the first mate when Zoro was Luffy's first mate? Also, that seond in command shit doesn't work in One Piece. Luffy is the captain and he is a goof. More than once has for instance Nami taken captain desicions because Luffy couldn't stop staring at some awesomeness or something. They don't have a strict hierarchy but it is obvious enough Zoro is the second mate and the one Luffy depends upon when his crew is in trouble. He was the one that has taken Luffy's pain and so carried Luffy's burden at Thriller Bark. He is also most probably number 2 in strength in the crew and to my believe, this is what the first mate should be. Just like how Marco is probably the strongest in the WB crew (not counting WB when he was alive).
In my opinion it has been shown quite often that Zoro is lvlheaded and knows what needs to be done. He has amazing insight and a feel for responsibility and knows exactly how and why Luffy would do things in a certain way. He is the only one that can take temporary command when Luffy were to be out (not that this'll ever happen) because he knows exactly how his captain thinks.
