Did anyone else notice Bill Bailey wearing a Dragonball top on the newest episode of QI? I was amused and curious as to whether he was a fan. He likes Star Trek so it is a possibility. Besides in Britain it isn't easy to get Dragonball tshirts without going into specialist comic shops and stuff.

Which creates even bigger problems, since the two guys Goku and friends end up fighting identify themselves as "Number 19" and "Number 20" a zillion times, yet no one ever thinks about how these aren't the names Trunks used.
Dragonball Kai's solution, where Trunks simply doesn't refer to them by any name at all, works perfectly, though.
Well remember that Trunks only relayed the names over to Goku. Piccolo gave a basic gist of the details; their names weren't all that important to them, the fact that they were Artificial Humans was.
Also remember that it's at the point where Goku's fighting that Kuririn and Tenshinhan begin to assume the future's been changed already by the fact that Goku's even still around and supposedly "winning" against #19. So it's pretty much possible to assume they believed most of the information given to them never came to be.

@Friend:
Due to the nature of me being offline, playing Budokai Tenkaichi funnily enough, I still haven't finished talking about the Ginyu Force :p
@Geppetto: the Ginyu force only seem weak anyway by Dragonball standards. I don't think many average shonen heroes could stand a chance against any of them except Gurd but that's a given. Of course we then go into the whole power scale debate but I will bloody my hands with that AS LONG AS nobody mentions Superman.
Actually in Dragonball Standards they weren't weak, not in the least bit it was all about timing, If vegeta never felt it needfull to have krillin and gohan around, guldo would of killed both of them. If goku didn't go through that electric storm he wouldn't have gotten as strong as he did when he first shows up on namek. He'd be a little bit stronger but not that strong, I honestly believe that he'd still mop the floor with Recoome, Burter and Jeece. As for Ginyu, he'd be a problem for Goku only if goku never encountered that electric storm.
But this is not the case.
I find the Ginyu Force Segment of the frieza arc to be one of the most enjoyable points in dbz, usually parts like this are my favorite. Another good mention would be the Babidi Tower. For me it was Toriyama's way of introducing different worlds. -
Yeah you are right, but I meant pure physical force, where Gurd's ability was more like a stand from JJBA. It wasn't an electric storm Goku went through in the manga, it was his gravity training.
I love Dragonball, but the Korin tower is one of my my favourite arcs ever.
-
Korin tower was good, it showed that goku had much more to learn about the world.
-
That and he faced his first real taste of defeat, it was an emotional ride for me as a reader when I first read it. Bear in mind this was my first shonen, and manga to boot.

When I read it I just saw the Tao situation as another obstacle goku had to overcome, now the first emotional ride for me in the series was when Krillin was murdered by Tambourine. To me that's like Luffy losing Ace.
-
To make matters worse, Goku got his ass beaten down by Tambourine. Then when he manages to get back at him and beat him, he's nearly killed by Piccolo.

http://greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=00BZ3p If Tsukento saw this back in 2003, he would so give the maker of this a good spanking. This guy makes asumptions on why we prefer the Japanese version. I do give him credit, atleast he has his facts straight about the dubs. Something most dubbies don't. But I'm not going to actually complain since this was made in 2003.
-
Seems the Hub, a new channel will air DBZ too in 2 weeks on 10/10
this seems to be the 1st Funimation ver and not the Kai edition lol -

Yikes. Those comments were embarrassing to read through.
Typical 13 year old comments.
…Sadly, I was around that age and talked like that about the dub. Nowadays, I put up a better argument without acting like an immature twat. :(
-
There's enough people still going around like that, primarily on Youtube.
In fact, I haven't seen a traditional dub fan not complain about Kai's dub.

first wikipedia but it seems the post i read it from has been edited
this morning

Which is why the whole cop-outish mentality of "it's so bad is good" should be tossed in the trash.

The Blu-Ray release is region free, so that's your best bet.
Are you sure it is? Amazon.com lists it as "US and Canada only" and I thought the region free stuff only applied to PS3 games. I'm from Germany, so I would have a problem with playing a Region A/1 release back on my PS3…
-
I'm European and it plays on my PS3. The backcover also has a region B logo on it.
-
Cool, thanks for the information!
How frequently are the Blu-Rays released and when can we expect some sort of Box Set?
And more importantly is there ANY way that I, as an European, can buy the Dragonball (no Z) Anime in order to watch the Japenese dub with English or German subtitles?
-
Of course. Just use the region-free DVD player you, as a European, should have anyway.
-
So what you're saying is there is no European release of it and I would need a new DVD player?
-
If by "need a new" you mean "make your old region free", then yes.
There are Australian DVDs, but they're of lower quality than the American ones, and I'm not sure if they're region 2 either. -
The orange bricks are region free.
Too bad they're terrible though.
-
If you can understand spanish, you can buy the sets from Spain, which use the Dragon Box masters and are overall pretty awesome. There are also the French sets (which of course have French subtitles) and the Italian sets (which… guess). If you can understand any of these languages, you can buy the appropriate set.
-

He was asking about the original Dragon Ball. Not DBZ. And after doing some research, it appears that the non-terrible Dragon Ball Season Sets are not R2.
But NightGrinder, it really shouldn't be that hard to make your DVD-player region-free, if it isn't already. Just enter the type of your player and "region free" on Google, and you should probably be able to crack it fairly easily. At least it worked just fine for me. And even if it doesn't, and you don't mind watching it on your PC, you could always download VLC Media Player, which will play any DVD regardless of region-coding.
-
I've always been curious how do you make your D.V.D player region free?
-

Generally by turning it on with no disc inserted and pressing a particular sequence of buttons on your remote.
As said, google "region free" and the name of your DVD player, and you'll probably find instructions unless your player is too new.
-
Damn that's very interesting indeed.
-
Hm…seeing as how I dont speak Spanish, Italian and I'm allergic to the french language ever since my school days (this is not meant as an offence to France or its inhabitants), I guess the American release is the way to go here. Too bad I do not own a DVD player anymore. ^^
However, I plan on building a new PC for myself in the next couple of month anyway and I could just plug it into my TV...
DVD drives do not have any sort of region lock, do they? -
http://thebigalnetwork.blip.tv/file/4194705/ I don't hate Bigal, but its just when they're talking about the dub. Now I don't dislike the dub, but it has flaws. I just love how when they say the Japanese score doesn't fit Dragon Ball Z. If the Japanese score doesn't fit Dragon Ball Z, then niether does the score for Dragon Ball.
-
I for one like the score for dragonball z, to me it's much better than the american score. I can't stand cheesy ass early 90's guitar riffs.
-

Funny how the only people who claim Dragonball's score doesn't fit the series all watched a shitty dub with a replacement score as kids.
-
Bruce Faulconer does have many good tracks, and I do prefer his score over Nathan Johnson.
-
I think the best fights of the series were Goku vs Vegeta (anime version) in Supe Saiyan 2.
Gohan vs Cell. The climax was the perfect way to end the series. Symbolically, Goku was passing the torch to his son which is messed up in the next arc.
-
Oh talk about the manga again? :p Vegeta vs Goku is a classic but my personal favourite battle is ssj goku vs frieza.
-

Hm…...well, there's only like two tracks from Bruce Faulconer I like, to be honest......while the majority of Dragon Ball music I like comes from the Japanese score, obviously.
@Friend:

I like those two as well. Hm…..but if we're talking about all of Dragon Ball, I'm giving props to Goku vs Tenshinhan, Goku vs Piccolo Daimao, and Goku vs Piccolo Jr.
-
Gotenks vs. Super Buu is the most underrated fight in the series.
-
Gotenks vs. Super Buu is the most underrated fight in the series.
I agree, but I liked it. It had the same cartoony vibe as early Dragon Ball. That, and Gotenks' attacks were too funny.
-

Kamikaze ghosts.
Seriously, how the fuck did they do that?
-
Kamikaze ghosts.
Seriously, how the fuck did they do that?
That was one baffling thing about Dragonball.
The GHOSTS COULD TALK. Goku… Krillin... Piccolo... Tien... Masters of Ki manipulation.. couldn't make their fireballs talk.
Yet two children under the age of ten do it.
Albeit, it was a stupid attack, but it was baffling nonetheless.
Anyone else notice that Gotenks had an attack very similar to Vegeta's donuts that he threw at Goku? (though it may have been filler, but seeing as how that's when Vegeta starts his rant I doubt it)
Did Goten and Trunks see that or what?
-
Gotenks obtained Super Saiyan 3 the same way he made the Ghosts have life: a gag from a gag character.
-
I will always find the irony delicious when Z dub fans complain that Kai "changed the music" yet they go on about how the dub's music is better than the original Japanese one.
FUNimationRules, why would you link that video? It's so painful to watch.
-
This wins over any other DB fight. Except, maybe, for Jackie Chun vs Krillin or the first steps of the Piccolo jr. vs Shen fight.
Also, this is one of those few instances were the Anime mops the floor with the Manga. And look at Yamsha having his own theme song!!!

Too bad it was all downhill for Yamcha from there.
-
Yes. If that was even possible. . . In fact, this was his highest point in the series. And he end up with a broken leg. His f*cking highest point.
But again: he got a f*cking theme song! With 80's guitars and Engrish combined into one!
-
Wait, he wasn't that bad right…
PPulyBl6Rjw&t=0m50s
Oh wait, people went out of their way to write a Christmas Carol about how terrible he is. -
It does feel strange though: this wasn't too long after he essentially got his only victory in the series against…well, the Invisible Man. My guess is that somehow the idea that Yamcha got a victory encouraged him to go all out in training until that loss to Tien...and then it just keeps getting worse.
-
Glutton for punishment. Kept watching BigAl's video.
"Fusion Reborn was a terrible movie"
"What do you think of Lord Slug?" "It's okay, I guess."ALL OF MY HATE!
-
This may've already been mentioned before, but in episode 23 did anyone else notice Dende says "all my brothers and sisters" but not even a minute later is confused on what a woman or a female is?
-
Yeah, Sabat posted on Twitter that was a mistake and said they'd try to fix it for the DVD release (which didn't happen).
-
You know what I always wanted to see a good fight between piccolo and vegeta, idk how or why but they were two rivals at some point although both more focused on surpassing goku but I think a nice fight scene between the two would have been great
something where piccolo gets mocked by vegeta who says something along the lines of only us saiyans are good in battle, then have him get some power up/extreme training come back and duke it out with ssj2 vegeta, I don't care how you end it either, vegeta wins, piccolo wins or just have goku transport ssj3 style and stop the fight before they kill each other (kinda like how nami did in the zoro luffy fight)
just as long as there's a good fight that shows certain characters can challenge saiyans
