Hmm. Well, with school starting soon I will not be able to reread One Piece. But, I have been reading a lot of One Piece this summer so I may be able to join in some discussions. Have fun!
Arlong Park rereads One Piece in 4 weeks
-
-
Apparantly, yes. There's a 4 week brain, which means the new chapter will come out in 5 weeks. The spoiler provider was a little vague and most of us though it'd be only 4 weeks before the next chapter.
That's not good… hopefully college will start taking it's tool during that last week, making the wait easier xD
-
This is a great idea! I've been thinking about rereading it lately anyway.
…I'm gonna feel stupid for asking this, but because if what happens to One Manga, I don't know where to read it from the beginning anymore, and I don't have the money to buy the whole series...Can someone please tell me where I can read OP from chapter 1?
-

I think watchop.com has all of it from 1 but most seem to read it on mangastream.com for the newest chapters.
-

Thanks, they do have them! I read it on Mangastream too, but I think they only have the last 4 chapters up.
-
I kinda read random volumes of OP anyway. Mostly skimming and better understanding certian scenes. There not a single panel I could forgot…. Maybe except for East Blue since I don't own the vols for those. If money comes around, I'll pick up the Omnibuses.
-
597 chapters is doable in far less time. I marathonexd Op anime in just 2 days. Also, I finished Hajime no Ippo in a couple days too. and tahts over 900 cahpters now i think
-
Already started reading and damn is it fun to see how there are things from the beginning that still need to be resolved and how so many characters have changed. And I am only chapter 6. Coby vs. Alvida will probably happen in the future. Zoro saying that he will kill Luffy if he ever gets in the way of his dream and how later on he continually sacrifices himself and his ambition for the sake of Luffy. Also, a lot of people say that Shanks used Haki in the first chapter but it really doesn't look like it.
-
Got some things in the first chap I've never seen before :ninja:
In the panel, where shanks pirates jump in a row, There are some faces we will see later (marine ford) but they didn't have been mentioned in the manga yet. I compared that pic with the one where shanks stands in the middle of the war with his crew.
The guy left to Lou is the same person as the one between shanks and beckman (same stupid haircut)
The guy right to yasopp is the same as the one above him 10 years later (same angry expression)
The guy next to that one is the same as the monkey dude (same stupid look )
I just don't see the dude with the dragon tattoo :wassat:
Other thing…Shanks said to ruffy:"See! A real pirate would never drink milk!"
A few years later ruffy's got someone in the crew who would kill for milk xDSorry for my bad english
-
Also, a lot of people say that Shanks used Haki in the first chapter but it really doesn't look like it.
It exactly looks like it?
-
Yesss, I'm definitely up for this challenge. I finally have an excuse to properly read the Skypiea arc. XD
Not sure if I'll be able to participate in daily discussions though.
-
Count me in for the discussions. I won't be rereading all of that cause I am on vacation and I don't have my volumes with me. But I'll try to refresh my memory every day. Great idea Kaiolino.
-
I'll be starting off a day later. But I will try to catch up to you guys after reading 597.
Expect me!
-
It exactly looks like it?
Not really, have you ever seen something run away because of haki? If that really was haki it would just fainted but instead it felt scared and ran away. It probably something in Shank's eyes that scared him.
-
Well, I managed to read the first 14 chapters today . I'm trying to do it, I'll have to read extra on the weekends it seems, though.
-
Just finished the day 1 schedule. I somehow found it very amusing to read how everyone was afraid of the Grandline in those early chapters. You know, with the New World ahead now and everything.
-
omg I just realised it started today :O I thought the 26th was tomorrow. WellI can probably catch up anyways :P
-
Romance Dawn is still as brilliant as ever.
-
i am dissapoited that mikio never appeard :(
-
Starting…...NOW!
-
I completely forgot that the stuff with Alvida didnt happen on a cruise ship.
Also was the scene where Morgan tries to make his men shoot themselves in the head in the anime? Don't remember that.
-

i think it was , but i am not sure
-
Just finished first volumne^^
Still a bit to go for today:happy: -
I think its funny that waaay back then in the early chapters buggy was saying stuff like "I'm going to be the greatest pirate" etc. ^^
I mean he already was on the pirate kings ship and that mans power is no mistery to buggy -
Just finished the first volume. Putting down my "theories", criticisms, and "special" praises into these comments. I don't want to just go "I like this" all the time so my positive notes are something that stuck out in my mind when reading it. If I'm not complaining about it, I like it.
Morgan's axe hand is sweet. I just like how the handle is sticking out in his skin but out of the elbow so it's noticeable. I just kept thinking all his actions are him overcompensating for something, maybe because he didn't earn his rank by his own effort.
Zoro's promise to Luffy made me think of Zoro's incident with Thriller Bark. Would Luffy kill himself if he ever found out about that incident to keep his promise? That's what I was wondering when I read that again.
Kuina's flashback was cut off too early, but it's understandable given it's Oda's early work. Still, only one or two pages with her death and aftermath.
I also think I'm trying too hard to retcon everything, which is bad. When rereading chapter 7, there's a close up in Coby's eye that made me think that's Oda showing early signs that Coby will have the same "intimidation" techniques that Shanks used in chapter 1. Hopefully I won't be doing this a lot when rereading the story.
-
@ultimateclima:
Kuina's flashback was cut off too early, but it's understandable given it's Oda's early work. Still, only one or two pages with her death and aftermath.
Yeah, I agree, it felt kinda rushed. Her death was just there all of a sudden, totally unexpected, and just like that the flashback ended. I remember reading this for the first time, pausing for a moment and thinking "Wait… what?" But that's actually a pretty nice effect. Oda didn't write much about it, it just happened, which made it all the more shocking for me. I liked that.
So yeah, even though it, witout a doubt, feels sort of "unfinished", that's not such a bad thing. At least I thought so. -
I'm in! Done the first 2 volumes. It's amazing what a small scale the series starts on and how short the arcs are. That's the great thing about OP though, it just grows and grows and grows and get better and better. I love this manga. More thoughts once I finish the Buggy arc completely.
-
Not really, have you ever seen something run away because of haki? If that really was haki it would just fainted but instead it felt scared and ran away. It probably something in Shank's eyes that scared him.
Yeah he probably had drank too much last night and had those scary red eyes… But for real, I don't recall anyone saying the targets have to faint. Haoshoku INTIMIDATES the foes and that's what exactly happens at the scene. Even in the same fashion as the later haoshoku scenes in the manga.
-
Alright, gonna start reading now and type up all of my comments to post when I'm done.
-
Just finished the Buggy arc.
Those first couple pages really made Buggy seem menacing yet funny. He really seemed like a threat when he first appeared.
ShuShu's backstory was still really touching to me, and I still felt very sad when his store was burned.
Richie was so scary looking when he was first drawn. I guess the recent design does fit with his comedic personality, but it'd be cool to see the ferocious Richie again in the future.
I always thought Luffy had a harder time fighting Buggy, but after rereading the fight, there wasn't really a time when Luffy was really injured or Buggy had the upper hand.
Finally, rereading the Buggy arc made me miss the crew interaction. As early as this arc, Luffy and Zoro were comedy gold along with Nami getting angry at them. It'll be sweet when the crew is together again and just enjoying their adventures.
-
What a good thing it was from Oda not to use Zoro as one of Buggy`s crewmates like he first intented to do^^
-
Well I just got done with today's schedule, time for my comments. It really is a treat to start all over again, as others have said, you notice Shank using the 3rd type of Haki, "color of conquering" (I think). I was surprised when Coby showed up, his early design was so funny, and now look at his current one…WOAH! hahaha
The whole dispute with Alvida wasn't on a ship like in the anime, which is what I was picturing all the time. I really do admire the manga more for these things, like Coby building a boat in 2 years. That wasn't in the anime, I found that a very deep part for the arc.The pacing is very calm unlike the later chapters, I enjoy that, since there's only Nami and Zoro with Luffy right now. Oh and I'm going to keep my eye on the other chapters that are aimed towards the crew members.
Chapter 6, Number One; This one is for Zoro. I know someone has posted all the chapters for the members that had these, but I'm going to keep an eye out for these still.
The Buggy Arc, man do I love Buggy. I forgot how evil he seemed at first, along with the other crew members. Richie's design was wicked, then turns comical later on, but I can still tell it's Richie. I also like how Oda put in tiny details that you can catch on some pages.
I want to type more but I think I'd just be rambling on hahaha. Oh and yeah I agree with someone else here, who said the interaction between the crew was even felt here, I enjoyed that.
So Day 1 is complete for me, I'll give my thoughts on Day 2's schedule. (This is such a great idea, kudos to the member who thought of this).
-
Also done with today's share.
I was surprised by how, even the early chapters, contained a lot of content. One might think that at this speed, after 597 chapters the story would be done… better for us I guess :P
Also, re-reading made me wonder how can people say that the beggining of One Piece is not that great. I mean, we get some of the best humor there is (was laughing out loud on most chapters), we get great characters interacting, some bizarre fights and badass moments, that's the best shounen has to offer, and it was all showed in 20 chapters.
As a last note, after seeing what Luffy did for Coby and that village's chief, I remember that back when I started watching I thought he was kind of a jerk for treating people so hardly, even if it was for their best interest :P
Anyway, looking forward for tomorrow's read.
-
Wow, I was so busy today I forgot about reading the chapters. I'll hurry up and read them.
-
Ahhhh I'm behind! I only got though 14 chapters today!
Oh gosh, my most recent revisiting of early One Piece was the anime, so I kept catching a lot of differences. I've noticed the manga is a bit less detailed than the anime at this point (Zoro's backstory, the decor in Helmeppo's bedroom). It kinda shows that Oda's gotten better at fleshing out story details (or worse, considering we're at the half-way point 13 years after the story debuted).
I'll probably end up getting caught up sometime Saturday or Sunday, but I'd like to get a little ahead for Sunday because of work and what not.
-
There's something I wanted to mention but forgot: Zoro never got an Oda box. Sure the audience knew beforehand who it was so it would be redundant to put one but I thought it was noteworthy.
Also, re-reading made me wonder how can people say that the beggining of One Piece is not that great. Agreed. Sure the later chapters are more elaborate with a large world with interesting settings, species, and world-influential characters, but the core of why One Piece is great has always been there.

I think most of the criticism is because of the anime, the first episode is really bad IMO, and after sometime our memories mix the two…
-
I noticed that too, clima.
It kind of through off some ideas of mine because of it.
-
The subtle differences between the comic and how the animated series depicted some of these earlier stories are things that I have completely forgotten about and to think people are still a little hard on Toei for how they adapt stories when these earlier ones had far more changes to them than anything in recent years.
One particularly interesting change IMO is Zoro asked for Luffy's help in the comic and basically tried to buy his freedom before the little girl brought him the riceballs though shortly after he retracted his offer when Luffy told him he wanted Zoro to join his crew. In the animated series Zoro just tells Luffy to go away the first time they meet. I wonder why they changed that. Perhaps they wanted to depict Zoro as strong-willed as possible choosing to make it through the month tied up there rather than ask for assistance from anyone. It does make Zoro out to a stronger-willed person by omitting that dialogue exchange I suppose.
The animated series sure played up Helmeppo's bedroom compared to the comic. I guess they decided he's already a bit of a sissy, so why not make it more evident?
I was starting to forget how charming the story was from the beginning, granted it gets better as it progresses but the starting point is still an enjoyable read.
-
Okay, so here are my comments on todays reading. It's long and they are more like observations and thoughts rather than anything else.
! Unluck’s Amazing 4-Week Long Reread of the Amazing Manga Series One Piece and Her Comments on Her Experience Doing So
! Day 1: August 26: Romance Dawn/Morgan/Buggy – 1 to 21
! * Seeing this art style is so strange now, it has really evolved since these chapters.- “Wealth, fame, and power had all been his.” Is the Straw Hat crew gonna get really rich (assuming One Piece doesn’t turn out to be some giant pile of treasure)? I think everyone is just going to end up owing Nami everything.
- First color spread of the series, I love Shank’s crew. But I really want to see Rockstar.
- Pirates make alcoholism cool.
- Oh hey, Shanks has scars on his legs and feet. Nice detail there.
- “See, a real pirate would never drink milk!” Poor Brook.
- And smoking. Pirates make smoking cool too.
- Oh my god, reactions to Luffy eating the Gomu Gomu fruit. I forgot how fucking entertaining that was.
- Has anyone else besides Higuma actually used Luffy’s face to through him around?
- “I’ll sell you to a freak show.” Wow, totally thought of the Shaobondy Human Auction house right there. That would be an interesting what if.
- And Lucky Roux gets the first kill of the series.
- Putting out your cigarettes on someone’s face is cool as well.
- And first use of the now explained haki is awesome.
- I wonder what age Shanks and Buggy were when they became apprentices on Roger’s ship. And if they knew each other before then.
- So weird to see Luffy setting out to sea after seeing his flashback.
- That narrator box with the pistol and bullet holes is insanely cool. I don’t think it ever shows up again, though.
- I think it was where Luffy said “Oh, what am I thinking, it doesn’t matter if I can’t swim if I get sucked into a giant whirlpool!” that I loved him.
- I absolutely love how far Coby’s character has come in the series.
- I can’t wait to see Coby capture Alvida sometime in the series’ future. It needs to happen.
- You know, “Tough Looking Old Biddy” Probably isn’t an insult coming from Luffy, considering Dadan.
- It’s weird to see people being like “Oh no, Grand Line, pirate’s graveyard!” now that we are all like “Oh, that was Paradise.”
- I want rice balls now.
- Oh Helmeppo, you’ve changed so much as well.
- What’s that word on Morgan’s face mask?
- Zoro’s sensei is kinda a dick to his daughter.
- I wish Ivankov would make a cameo here, it would have been hilarious.
- Kuina’s death always seemed very rushed to me, only one page.
- “Are you the offspring of the devil?” No, just the world’s most wanted man.
- I can’t believe that they just can’t tear those ropes apart. Or just break the wood.
- “If you do something that ends up in the way of my goal, I will have to cut you’re your stomach open to say sorry!” Wow, definitely shows the contrast since Thriller Bark and being under Mihawk.
- I really like the trust Luffy has with Zoro even when he first joined.
- Luffy should be called Captain more often. It’s cool.
- Luffy might be simple-minded, but I wouldn’t call him stupid. He got Coby into the Marines.
- “There have been events where pirates have joined the Marines to be spies!” Actually, I want to see something like that. It would be very cool.
- They still call it the Seven Seas in the One Piece world…North Blue, South Blue, East Blue, West Blue, Grandline, New World, All Blue?
- Buggy’s ship is so ridiculous.
- Would be interesting if Nami was right and there actually was a treasure map in Luffy’s hat. Map to One Piece? I assume Shanks knows where Raftel is.
- It’s strange to see Buggy as a legitimate villain and not a comedic character. He is brutal though, and who knows what may happen in the future.
- Really, where is it in his life that Buggy decides that he is going to have a clown as his pirate motif?
- Buggy’s Pirates sure know how to party though. Ace can tell you that. Or could, actually.
- Why did none of them even notice the lack of blood that Buggy spurted out when he was cut in half?
- Luffy biting Buggy’s knife in half was pretty badass.
- Shu-shu was pretty dumb to swallow that key. Just saying.
- I should be following Zoro’s lead and sleeping too.
- “Shu-shu’s an intelligent dog.” No he’s not, he ate a key.
- Luffy dressed as a viking is really fucking cool.
- Oh shit, scary Luffy is scary. And awesome. Like, really awesome. Also, he reminds me of Shanks in that panel.
- Nami’s breasts…Wow, its ridiculous what has happened to them on the Grand Line. Must be something in the air.
- Just took a break to read a chapter of an amazing One Piece fanfiction author. It was fucking hilarious. Bachelor parties with Straw Hats and Supernovae would never end well.
- I like Boodle’s little flashback tale about creating the village to replace the one destroyed by pirates.
- I like Cabaji’s scarf, but not his hair.
- Seriously, what the hell was Roger thinking, bringing along a little dick like Buggy on to his crew as an apprentice?
- Buggy says that he is going to gain all of the treasure in the world. He has seen the New World and met monsters the like of Shiki, yet he thinks that he can conquer the Grand Line? What the hell, man?
- When villains aim for injuries, its “dirty fighting.” When the protagonists do it, it’s “smart tactics.” Think about it.
- I really like ship’s wheels. Just saying, I do.
- It’s kinda cool to see the hat getting mauled by Buggy because in the latest chapter you can see the three marks it left when Nami stitched it up.
- Roger’s flag doesn’t have the mustache on it in the flashback.
- Oh my god Rayleigh. I’ll see you again in 480 chapters.
- I wonder how many crewmates Roger had. Would be an interesting comparison between him and Luffy, since it seems that Roger has more than 10 members of his crew.
- Shanks looks weird to me without his scars from Teach.
- “If there’s treasure lying on the seabed and you can’t swim then you can’t go and get it.” I’m pretty sure you can’t swim to the bottom of the seabed anyways, unless you are in the shallows.
- What’s with Roger’s crew thinking that Devil Fruits are a myth? You would think that they of all people would know better.
- It would actually be a little cool to maybe see a little more about this village later in the story, maybe them reading about Luffy in the paper. It is the first place, besides the marine base, that he has saved.
-
"Pff… Can't swim."
There were a couple of nice reminders when reading through the first volume. For an example, I drew a parallel between how Luffy punched Helmeppo and later will do the same to the Tenryuubito. Comparing how long he was able to hold back, he's really matured since the beginning.
The appearance change in Arvida and Coby seems really far off. I wouldn't have recognized them had they not been named.
I didn't have time to read vol. 2 and 3, but I'll try to catch up eventually. :D
-
I think I just saw an early version of Law here.
http://74.63.78.69/readerop/piece/014/4
It's the guy in the backround in the last panel. What do you think?
-
No, he's wearing a bucket hat, rather than a fur bowler. It's more like a younger version of Woop Slap. Also, needs some sort of facial hair.
Made this comment on Twitter earlier, and only read to chapter 20. Gonna stick to 20/ch per day. Anyways, I forgot that Mohji was essentially OHKO. And it was similarly done again in Jaya when Luffy OHKO's Bellamy. Similar pose and all.
-
It's funny how small-scale so much of it is in the beginning. VIz translation has FAR FAR FAR too much "Cap'n".
Also, why is Buggy clamouring for a map of the Grand Line when he KNOWS that maps for the Grand Line are useless anyway?
-
Don't have the Viz volumes yet, except for the random late ones I picked up at Book-off. However, I can now read OP at work. It'll make this project that much easier for me.
-
So which site are people using for this? I forgot that OneManga deleted all their backlog :/
Edit: NM. Time to play too!
-
Usopp is talking to Kaya on the ground floor.
In the anime I'm sure he always has to climb the tree to talk to her on the first floor
-
Regarding Shanks. Since he already had the scars in Romance dawn he must have fought BB before that. However, was it when he already had his own pirate crew, and if so did he change his flag after his fight with black beard?
-
Y'know. I'm always impressed everytime I see Oda's first design for Alvida. Especially her hair. Looks awesome every single time.
Also amusing is how her freckles disappear on Chapter 2 page 11 from the top panel to the middle where she is talking about Zoro.
I wish we found out who Coby's Plastic surgeon is. Maybe this will be a future DF-User? XD
