Basically it's either: he having amnesia; or being imprisoned/becoming a slave; or the revolutionaries saving him, he becoming a revolutionary and being forbidden of contacting his brothers because of some rule or restriction they have about it...

Yes but that does't take away that Oda's fb equivalent of a money shot this time around was Ace's line about Luffy being behind him. Which, was clearly not the case in MF. It was intended to justify what happened at MF but…it was a little weak.
An amazing line and it had me in tears but it just doesn't pay off as much as Oda's wrap-up morals usually do.
What I did like was how Ace got fire in his eyes each time he wouldn't back down. Oda handled that quite well. You can see that what happened at MF was less personal opinion and more his bloodline in him acting. I liked that. But the big payoff was his line about Luffy and HAD Oda set it up like that, it would have been REMARKABLE. But as it stands it's just a damn fine story.
Still don't agree with Sabo being alive and the problem I have with Greg's reasoning of a great emotional reunion with Sabo is that for the most part Sabo's relationship and closeness to Luffy was never played up front center like with Ace, to the point that Luffy reuniting with his long lost brother Sabo would be a consolation prize compared to the lost bond from the death of Ace who he spent many years growing closer to after Sabo was gone.
Second problem would be that Sabo being alive would kill the idea of the sole surviving younger brother accomplishing the dream of freedom that the brothers all shared and finally stepping out on his own no longer as the younger brother and as his own man without an older brother to look up to. What purpose would Sabo even serve in the story beyond the emotional reunion? That's another issue I have with it, would he sit back and cheer Luffy on as he becomes the PK whilst doing his own thing? Would he be Dragon's sidekick underling as many have proposed? I can't think of a single purpose for Sabo that would be all that great save for the arc that they reunite.
And sure it's easy to ask what series are we reading for those of us who think Sabo is dead, hell you could say the same for any series with a similar ambiguous death sequence because in most series you would get the sudden reappearance of the long lost such and such character who should've died in some accident but somehow survived or pulled a Houdini and then regails his loved ones with the flashback tale of how he made it through. If Oda chooses the Sabo is alive route, well that's the route he decided to take, It's a plotline that's been done many times but I'd much rather have the theme of Luffy no longer having the older brother to look over him and now has to buck up and make his deceased brothers proud. It's bad enough wondering how Shanks will fit into this in the end, wouldn't surprise me if BB takes care of him.
I'm still of the opinion that such a big flashback is unlikely to only serve as a little reinforcement for Luffy's will to live and hate on the Tenryuubito or whatever, the Shanks did the former well enough and the hate on Tenryuubito already started far ago, and Oda didn't even put Luffy recognizing them
I'm sure this serves as an Introduction to Sabo, a future character, the flashback has been way too based on him, and if it was for the two previous reasons, it would have had so much more impact if it was Ace remembering it in the prison or before the Whtebeard pirates arrived

What do you think was the entire point of Ace dying? It wasn't Oda just saying let's kill this terrible character, it was him writing an event that would give Luffy character development through forcing him to rebound after the loss of the older brother figure. And yeah at the start of this arc I thought Ace would live mostly due to the same character potential arguments and arguments focusing on Oda giving into cliché that the "Sabo is alive!" guys are using, difference is that this was Oda proving me wrong for the 1st time and setting a precedent in his story, and I learned my lesson and I think Brennen did too. But I just find it hilarious that some notable Ace gonna die supporters are arguing for a cliché (just as myself and others were doing for why Ace would live) and a similar shitty older brother scenario that we were called on for arguing for Ace surviving. The difference? I guess it's just a matter of you guys liking Sabo vs hating Ace that would shape your opinion of where Oda's going with Sabo.
But for me, I don't see Oda undoing what he's set in motion with Ace dying. I would think you're able to tell the difference between Ace's scenario and Sabo's. Oda not following the predictable rescue arc seems to be just as much of a no brainer as him not actually killing Sabo.
If he is alive…and I'm still fairly skeptic because that would mean Dogura didn't stick around to see if Sabo was okay...maybe Sabo's the future eyepatch character? Rereading the chapter, I thought it was strange Oda focused in on the eye before the explosion.

Yeah this is one of my points against it, and it's a typical cliche in more than just anime/manga, give a character an ambiguous death scene then insert the typical stranded on an island by himself with amnesia or some other shit as a reason for the character never contacting loved ones.

That's the thing. The last time a ship exploded was when Igaram was on board. Luffy and co. didn't stick around because they didn't want to be caught by the agents and wanted to escape ASAP. Dogura should've stuck around and at the very least checked to see if he was okay.
Whether Dogura cared enough to stick around and didn't find a body or just bolted right after the ship blew up, I'd find it difficult to believe that Ace and Luffy would just think he died if all Dogura said was that a World Noble blew up his ship. I would think that Luffy and Ace would be more optimistic and think he survived.
Then again in the chapter a part of Luffy thought Ace died until he showed up…

We knew less about Luffy and Ace's relationship a year ago than we do about Luffy and Sabo's now.
The wording in the letter on that last page is straight from the heart. Oda put a lot of thought in that for his character. It showed, despite the short time together, they shared a very special bond. Hell, they were brothers.
Sabo is alive and it has zlich to do with Oda's policy of keeping people alive.

It's just a matter of how it felt and what we know, if you look back on most scenes it was mostly Ace and Luffy interacting together be it them sparring together (though we know Luffy sparred with Sabo too), Luffy going out of his way to become friends with Ace before Sabo even came into the picture, Luffy calling for Ace's help etc, etc. Also you just know that Sabo's "death" brought Luffy and Ace closer together than Luffy and Sabo ever got to become and they had years after Sabo was gone to build up the brother relationship. If anything I'd say that Ace and Sabo were closer to one another (due to god knows how long of collecting money for their pirate fund) than Sabo and Luffy were to each other.

Imma go with it not happening, I could've said the same thing about Ace surviving because Rescue arcs pretty much never fail. I guess we'll know who's right in another 5 or so years, maybe… Then again we could see Sabo being washed ashore next chapter to some island and he has amnesia or something crazy, or maybe a fishman or something found him, insert your prefered survival scenario. Though if it happens once I get over my disappointment, I'd love to see if Oda can give Sabo a place in the story that's meaningful beyond the reunion.

I think I'm just as sure that Sabo is dead as Greg is sure that he's alive. I haven't ever in my million+ years of reading this series ever had a bigger BAAWWW moment than I did reading Sabo's letter to his brothers. The Letter provided so much closure. It would feel so cheap to me if it ended up as this:
Oda: "I know you guys are still really sad about Ace dying, so… I made a new brother for Luffy! He's just as cool and strong as Ace and he has a hat too! So please forget about that meaningless Ace guy 'cause we have Sabo now!"
If Sabo shows up in the present storyline, for me, it would be a cheap cop out. A way for Luffy to still have a cool older brother, even though the rescue attempt for Ace failed.
I really think it's going to be Luffy's family that brings him out of his current state, much like he's done for every one of them at some point. As awesome as a reunion with Sabo would be, I just can't see it. There are far too many things in the series that are stacked against Sabo's return that would have to be overcome.
The two biggest reasons that come to mind immediately:
1. Sabo not contacting either of his brothers for all these years.
2. Sabo didn't come to save Ace during the war.
I've heard all of the fan excuses for reasoning away those two issues and frankly they aren't good enough for me. Sabo certainly isn't the type of character that would let someone else control him so for me the whole "Dragon is keeping him from contacting anyone" is completely ridiculous, as is the amnesia routine. I just haven't heard anything that sounds remotely plausible as for why Sabo hadn't contacted his brothers, and why he didn't show up to the war.
After reading Sabo's letter we see just how strong his bond is with his brothers. Sabo's bond with Ace and Luffy is his treasure. I don't think that there is anything in the world that could keep him from them. Other than death...
I just read the raw again (high quality raw is up by the way) and have to agree that Ace's "ブッ殺してやる!!!" moment really makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. That entire scene is so expertly done. And now we have to wait another week to see the rest... Ugh.

I'm sure if Oda does somehow make Sabo live it will be better than any of the lame fan reasons for it. I'd still be upset though. I guess it's because I find Sabo's death to be so touching.
I dunno, guys. While I think Sabo's death was very ambiguous and Oda may bring him back at some point, right now I'm more inclined to think he's dead. It was Dadan's speech that made me realize why Sabo would have such a low-key death: he was killed by the world.
Unlike other flashback characters, who were grown people who did great things in their lives, Sabo was a little kid who tried to fulfill his dream and ultimately failed because he challenged the world without having the power to do it.
By being the remaining little brother, Luffy has no one else to look for him now. He will need to grow up and become the man he dreams himself to be.
That's my take on it. I'm not discarding the possibility that Sabo may have survived, but I don't think we will have the definitive answer anytime soon anyway, so for now I'll stick to the camp that believes Sabo's dead.
I was thinking about this whole thing this morning. Not just the whole Sabo is dead/alive controversy, but the f/b in general and where it might take Luffy in the coming chapters. I think the moment when Luffy explains why he chases Ace and never gives up is important going forward too. He felt alone, despite knowing Shanks was out there, despite Garp, who genuinely loves him even if he's harsh, never-the-less, Luffy felt completely and utterly alone until he met Ace, and later Sabo. It's been knowing that Ace is out there somewhere that made Luffy feel "not alone" all this time. As I have stated (not that anyone particularly cares, lol), I'm still not convinced of Sabo's fate, but I don't think he needs to have stayed an awesome, powerful figure for any future meeting with Luffy to have the emotional impact of which Greg speaks (lol). (Although I think it'd be potentially a missed opportunity if he's not awesome in the extreme, I can see some pretty powerful potential if he's not, as well.) It's the relationship itself, the bond, that was paramount to Luffy, not the "older, cooler brother" part. That part was just a bonus. The potential for that reunion is immeasurable if its handled well–and if anyone can do it, it's Oda.
And I think Luffy can grow "now/then" just thinking Sabo is dead, whether it's true or not. He (and Ace) just had to believe it for the impact to be there.
In chapter chapter 549, Ace told Luffy that they will be freeer than anyone else. Sabo gave them a purpose of liberty.

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I wasn't implying that he needed to be alone to be able to gain the One Piece (although you are right, this is a very common vehicle by which heroes reach a new level of growth etc in many pieces of literature, not just manga). I just think it'll be pivotal in Luffy’s growth over the next while as he comes to terms with the loss of Ace, and of course all of that will have ramifications far into the remainder of the story.

Yeah, good point. Time to grow up in a completely different way that he has thus far. This is the pivital moment–-there has been foreshadowing of his growth, but this is the huge event that pushes everyone to the next stage. He beat his grandpa--never happened before, he lost his Nakama to Kuma---never lost them so fully before, and now he lost Ace after almost succeeding in saving him. Huge events that will affect him and everyone else--Garp--the SH's, all the others for whom he has become a symbol, thanks in part to WB. Luffy is clearly being groomed for far bigger things on the OP world stage than we have been seeing up until now---the chosen one--the special "D" for whom Roger was waiting, destiny's golden child of the new age, waaay more than just finding freedom for himself on the high seas. He needs to grow into that in order to both accomplish it and to be worthy of it. This is the start of that change. I'm on the edge of my seat! Can.not.wait. to see where this goes.

He was just lame with all of the forced coolness and the mention of his name just became annoying. I think even Oda realized he wasn't one of the quality important side characters so part of this flashback was to make him a lil better with some development. Plus his death brought us so much more than him living.

I don't entirely agree. The start of "that change" is right here at this arc. Sabo's "death" (I myself am not sure if he is alive or not) is the trigger to Luffy's dream. And its not One Piece nor becoming Pirate King. Its becoming free by finding the treasure etc. Before this arc we knew that he and Ace had given a promise to each other to live free and without regrets, but now we understand why. I disagree that Luffy is "being groomed" for great things. Why it gives that impression to us readers is because we see things about him in a reverse way. Its usually we meet a future crew member, see their past and their determination for their dreams, and then see how they r not ready to achieve them just yet (Zoro meeting Mihawk is one example). For Luffy first we see this "character development" after we know a lot about him, then we see the "I'm not strong enough" moment, and then his past. This whole experience of being separated from his nakama, the war, Ace and everything will just remind Luffy (cuz he knew it from the start) that he by himself cannot achieve anything. And with this flashback I think we understand a little better now why exactly he picked each and everyone of his nakama, why he protects them with everything he can etc. - because maybe he sees himself a little in everyone, and he knows they too need help to achieve their dreams (like when Robin had given up in the temple in the Arabasta arc), so he helps them, like they are helping him.
