What do you expect from one book? 900 titles is impressive compared to most shoddy tie-ins.
A complete guide.

Welcome to the forum. I have modified your account accordingly.

your kind of being douchey now man, I mean he clearly won the argument just accept it you win enough anyways you don't always need the last say
and yes I did just invented a word
@Abo:
dragon ball kai has no filler
@Nomur:
No filler and HD, for starters.
Uh, guys. There IS some filler left behind, like Bulma interacting with frog Ginyu.

My Complete History of the World book is not in fact a complete history of the world.
I must sue.

First off, Airflow gets that its a joke. We have reparte and understanding. There's a large difference between sarcasm between friends, and trashtalking and breaking apart the statements of idiots.
Second. I don't give a shit about winning arguments. Discussion is awesome, its the whole point of a forum. Long as the other person has a valid informed point, or actually knows more than me, I'm happy to be wrong and learn something, even if I disagree with them. I wouldn't go against Zephos in any discussion on world politics, for instance, because I know that's not my strong suit at all. Nor would I dare question Greg or Aohige on… anything related to Japan.
And in the case of brick wall idiots, I usually give up on them after a post or two and move on.
In THIS case, you own the book, you brought it up and recomended it, so you are the expert on the matter.
I'm just waiting for you to answer my question. The answer to which will inform my opinion about the quality of the book and its claim to being complete. If it adresses the five random common but non mainsteam titles from the 80's that I mentioned and scores them appropriately, then great, sounds like a fine book and it might actually have my interest and be worth looking into.
If it misses one of them, then I have major doubts towards its claims of accounted for "every published manga stateside.", since I wasn't even trying to be obscure, and a couple of them are pretty major works. If it gets them, then hey, its probably a decent book with some actual effort in it, and not just the appearance of effort with a week of research via Google.
So.
What does it say about Phoenix, Saint Seiya, Outlanders, Kimagure Orange Road and Flame of Recca.
My Complete History of the World book is not in fact a complete history of the world.
I must sue.
Allowances can be made given the sheer scope. I already said I didn't expect it to know every Japanese book ever.
I'll be satisfied if it even acknowledges the random picked series. I'll be impressed if it mentions the manga Antarctic Press translated years ago.
Mostly I get pissed off about books that, for instance, claim Megatokyo was the first American Manga ever, and that Tokyopop launched manga in trade format… and show an utter disregard for actual research and effort. As was the case with "Graphic Novelists"
http://www.amazon.com/U-X-L-Graphic-Novelists-Profiles-Illustrators/dp/1414404409/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1207318074&sr=8-2
a three volume reference series that was more innacurate than Wikipedia, and in general, a piece of crap.
Just because a book has a lot of entries doesn't mean they're any good. WHich was a shame, because I would have loved for that book to be great, what it attempted to accomplish was a nice effort.

So.
What does it say about Phoenix, Saint Seiya, Outlanders, Kimagure Orange Road and Flame of Recca.
It does follow pretty much every manga that has been published stateside as far as I have seen. Phoenix, Saint Seiya (listed under Knights of the Zodiac due to it being published as such), Outlanders, and Flame of Recca ARE listed.
I've never seen an official English release of the Kimagure Orange Road manga however. Is there actually one? The anime had been dubbed, but I can't find anything of Kimagure Orange Road having an actual English release. Well, I should say an American release.
Since you asked, however:
Phoenix-
Described by Tezuka as "my life's work," Phoenix is epic in extreme, spanning literally the whole of human history. It consists of twelve stories but was almost certainly unfinished at the time of Tezuka's death in 1989. The stories leap back and forth in time: the first takes place in the very distant past, the second in the very distant future, the third in the slightly less distant past, and so on, with past and future slowly converging toward the present. The stories are linked by the presence of the immortal Phoenix and the running themes of survival and immortality. Taken individually, they run the gamut from good to great, with the changes in style and tone that might be expected in a work serialized over the course of four decades. The best story may be volume 4, the stunning "Karma" (Ho-o in Japanese editions), which follows the interlocking lives of two eighth-century sculptors, one a saintly Buddhist, the other a deformed and bitter bandit. The strangest may be volume 6, "Nostalgia," in which a woman left alone on a barren planet commits repeated incest with her descendants, only to be eventually relieved by shape-shifting aliens called Moopies (which also appear elsewhere in the series). Despite the periodic miss, all of the stories are the work of a master at the top of his form. The final volume of the Viz edition includes a selection of Tezuka's early work. (Four stars)
Saint Seiya (listed under KotZ)-
One of the most influential manga of the 1980s, Saint Seiya (together with Dragon Ball) is the baseline of all modern Shonen Jump manga. A calculated hit, it combines the earnest machismo (and bushy-browed, rosy-cheeked characters) of 1970s boys' manga with pure fantasy, using Greek myths (plus a little mixed-up Christianity) as the basis for its characters' godlike superpowers. Seiya and his friends are modern-day armor-clad warriors trained in hand-to-hand combat to serve the goddess Athena. With virtually no pause for plot, they jump into one insane one-on-one fight scene after another, undergoing shocking, often self-inflicted torture in the name of friendship and justice (eyes gouged out, limbs severed, chained to crosses upside-down, etc.). The characters' "cloths" (basically super-armor) are toys the reader might imagine playing with, and the whole manga is painted with glowing screentone and bright, primary colors. The dated artwork consists mostly of giant perspective-free splash pages of characters hitting one another, often over cosmic backdrops of meteors, planets, the Buddha, etc. In other words, it's the perfect little boy's fantasy, even drawn as if a ten-year-old drew it. (Violence-wary adults be warned: the manga, unlike the anime, is gloriously uncensored.) Two sequel manga, one by Kurumada and one by Shiori Teshirogi, have not been translated. (Three stars)
Outlanders-
A star-spanning epic adventure that gradually morphs into a drippy love story. Outlanders starts out splendidly, as an alien empire invades Earth with a fleet of monstrous biological warships in order to reclain its legendary "sacred planet" from the worthless beasts that have polluted it (i.e., us). Fiery space princess Kahm crosses swords with everyman photojournalist Tetsuya, a shadowy secret society coordinates the response of Earth's governments, and alien warships shaped like armored slugs and pop-eyed goldfish blast the heck out of planes and tanks and major terrestrial land masses. Unfortunately, Manabe opts to focus on the least interesting of these plot threads- a lame and undermotivated romance between Kahm and Tetsuya, who go from star-crossed adversaries to swooning sweethearts in the space of the first couple of volumes, and then force the rest of the cast to spend the remainder of the story attesting to the awesomeness of their incomparable love. (Two-and-a-half stars)
Flame of Recca-
Polished and quick-paced, Flame of Recca reads like a more carefully plotted, more extreme version of Yu Yu Hakusho. Recca, a teenage ninja who can blast flames from his hands, fights and then teams up with other high school martial artists, until a secret from his past sends him into battle with his evil half brother Kurei and the maniacal industrialist Koran Mori. Starting out with an OAV-style plot of young ninjas in high school, the scene quickly shifts to one of the longest fighting tournaments ever (12 volumes!), in which the heroes face increasingly threatening opponents armed with madogu, transforming ninja accessories. The art is heavy-metal gothic, full of shrieking villains, grotesque masks, and evil grins. This "dark" style, plus T&A, swearing, and comedic breast grabbing, indicates the desire to aim the series at an older readership than the Weekly Shonen Jump manga it imitates, but the predictable storytelling never manages to create the illusion of tension. (Two stars)
Also, keep in mind that while I do like the book for going over so many manga, there are certain titles that I definitely disagree with their rating and commentary, but it is nevertheless a good title as it serves its purpose as a guide very well.

Well all right then. I'll stop comparing it to similar shoddier releases. Thank you for the time and information.

It hasn't, far as I know, but various parts of the anime have. That was part of the test of how complete they are. Things that have animes stateside, and are fairly well known quantites with long running mangas that didn't get quite translated.
The others had all had stateside releases though and I really was curious if the likes of Tezuka were being ignored because they were old, or Outlanders because it was obscure-ish and kind of porny, all in favor of the likes of Naruto and Fruits Basket, which were the prominent cover pieces. And even if they'd gone the super extra mile of referencing stuff that does have a manga, but not a stateside release. Just a little liner note. Like
Kimagure Orange Road- While some of the anime has been released stateside, the manga has not yet been published. It is X volumes and was published in Y magazine in Z years.
It does in fact seem like a pretty comprehensive guide on american releases up till 07, which is indeed impressive.

Oh wait. that was the first NES Simpsons game.

Manga: The Complete Guide.
Though the whole thing could have been avoided if instead of Chopperman calling me a dick, and then saying I was "really fucking stupid," and then later in a seperate post, a douche, he had actually answered my legitimate questions.
But that first post is deleted now, so I guess it was just a private personal attack. Only the "douchey" comment remains public.

It represents the inner conflict present in Vegeta that Toriyama intended.

OK can everyone holsd hands and be friends now? Good. I would rather not have hostility in a thread as holy as this one, it's hardly Naruto or Bleach lol. Now everyone have a piece of pizza.

fine i'm sorry….. now where's this pizza you speak of
Er it's the metaphorical one, more of a token gesture pizza but still a gesture nontheless.
That Phoenix manga sounds really cool, I'm going to have to give it a try.
@Friend:

You tricked me
The Pizza is a LIE!!!
Speaking of Tezuka, could you find any of his works online, except for Black Jack?
Pizza is in the Naruto thread.
Along with boobs and other 80's stuff.
Cookies if Chrissie is around.
Speaking of Tezuka, could you find any of his works online, except for Black Jack?
Nope. Due to the art not be OMG modern! and most of the works being decades old, there's not a lot of demand for his stuff stateside.
I'd love to read Kimba.
When did anime/manga become so fruity, I blame Eva.
Shit was ballin' in the 80's.
I think that was the one.
I remember hearing Gaogaigar was like a direct response to the eva-clone tendency
Seeing all the anime that started in the new season ten weeks ago, the current tendency is towards creepy trash/fanservice.
Was there even an otaku orientated market 20 years ago.

No Buddha or Phoenix for me, I guess.
No Buddha or Phoenix for me, I guess.
The States have Buddha. We have Swallow the Earth as well.
No Buddha or Phoenix for me, I guess.
Both are available in US. You just have to pay for the volumes.
And Phoenix has been out in English for ages.
I have a few of those, don't care for Buddah honestly. Phoenix was interesting though.
Actually, there is quite a number of Tezuka's works available in English.
Dark Horse published Astro Boy, Lost World, Metropolis and Nextworld.
Viz released Adolf and Phoenix.
And Vertical published Apollo's Song, Buddha, Dororo, MW and Ode to Kirihito, and is currently releasing Black Jack.
Forbidden Planet in NYC had a ton of Tezuka series the last time I visited.
So I've got a question. Which is the better purchase, the Dragon Box sets or the Dragonball Kai sets? Thanks.
Kai has no filler, the dragon boxes are bloated with the stuff.
Quality wise I'd assume kai is better as well, as damaged frames were supposedly fixed or removed or somesuch. Daizex is the best place to go on that score for comparisons and the like.
I'd get the manga instead if you don't already have it.
So I've got a question. Which is the better purchase, the Dragon Box sets or the Dragonball Kai sets? Thanks.
Just get "normal" Dragon Ball. Screw Z/Kai.
I mean I've also watched Z and GT and now I am watching Kai, but it's just the same all the time.
Dragon Ball was pure gold. Toriyama should have stop after the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai (the one Goku fought with Piccolo Jr.).
Well eventually I was planning on getting all of the Dragonball sets and then moving on to Z, but I don't know whether to get the Dragon Boxes or Kai.
I don't really need anything but the manga, it's the same kind of thrill I get whenever I'm reading FMA, OP or HXH.
Get what you want…Its only for your own knowledge, get what you really want first. Or if you dont know anything go in order of the series. If you want filler and dont care to lay some extra dollars on getting nothing in return then just get the Dragonboxes, if you want straight forward plot and plan to wait in between for DVD releases do that.
I mean wouldnt it be better just to get the Orange bricks, i mean if you demand quality picture, dont but if you dont care get the bricks.
Actually, Kai does have filler. Kanzentai estimates that the Saiyan and Ginyu arcs are about 5% filler, while the Freeza arc is about 15% filler. Some of this just can't be avoided without redoing the story from scratch.

I think they could have cut all the Bulma/Ginyu frog material without any trouble whatsoever.
Incredibly dissapointed to find thats still in there, since it was one of the most cabbage-headed fillers in the series.
Fake Namek and finding Dragonball for random Freeza goons are stil worse .
And the pearl episode is only redeemed by Maron's cleevage :ninja:

I heard they left it just because Ginyu-Bulma's annoying interjections and ravings occured alongside of a portion of Piccolo, Krillin and Gohan's canon commentary.
I don't see why they couldn't have just drawn over her with background in the scenery and just wipe it out, but it is a bit of an explanation.
Would cost a lot of aditional money and effort and could look piss poor .
They recolored Vegeta for his first appearance, shouldn't be much harder to just overlap scenery.
Not to mention all the money they are saving by, you know, not drawing any of the new episodes they are cashing in on.
Anyone knows where can I download the original series before Z with english subs and no dub ? Please help me.
