In the Viz translation Urouge calls Zoro the first mate. I remember having a discussion about that, does anyone know exactly what he said in the Japanase version?
Second in command, if memory serves.
Basically, same thing.

Lets hope it gets all cut down to make a life sized Going Merry and Thousand Sunny.
there already is.

That was dismantled years ago.
The copy of volume 14 we have at work (Borders) has the Baroque Works label. Oddly, none of the copies we've gotten recently of the other volumes from the arc have it, but it's still proof that they're releasing it.
I should take a picture of the One Piece shelving unit at work…five full shelves of pure beauty.
Cool. I'm guessing no more metallic logo anymore too right? What is the color choice for the logo. Like Skipea was green, and Water Seven was blue, and I think east blue was like a brownish red.
Also right now I own volume 1-3(metallic logo) and 24-48. How should I get volumes 4-23? Should I get the omnibuses and then the metallic logo Baroque Works volumes and such. Their are a lot of combinations, so I'm looking for opinions.
Turns out that rightstuf is already shipping me 49-53 just like someone previously mentioned.

The color scheme for the Baroque Works logo is purple and pink.
Is there any new/interesting info from the latest Oda interview?
Is there any new/interesting info from the latest Oda interview?
no…....
! HA! Made You Look, NO!
Is there any new/interesting info from the latest Oda interview?
Nothing much, but here is something I liked:
Oda says he's not sure if he'll ever show Sanji's left eye, but he doesn't show it only because the readers are so interested in it.
Otherwise, nothing noteworthy.

Really? Is it different from what they are doing with Impel Down?
For those wondering what the baroque works title's color looks like.

Thanks. I think I prefer the gold logo still.
Those colours are awful. So glad i got the original bronze releases. One colour decision which was obvious but really nice was blue for Water 7… those shades of blue REALLY go well with the volume colours. Except maybe vol. 45. Green for skypiea was okay. Red for Thriller Bark was a good decision, too; volume 46 looks great with all that red and yellow. I dont really like that they chose black for Sabaody, though. Purple for impel down is quite nice.
...
I'm very conscious of colour schemes XD
Pretty much everything they've done wrong has been complained about before, so i'll complain about something new. Van OGRE. Auugh. Although, i dont even think its 'Auger'; the way we have been spelling it. I think it should be Augur. To 'augur' means to predict. What is he saying all the time? wheel of fate this, wheel of fate that. And, basically 'We will meet them again', in chapter 237. So yeah. Oda likes meaningful names, doesn't he?
I got vol 49 and the july issue of SJ today. Strange enough neither Forbidden Planet or Travelling Man had 50-53. I may have to get them through the book depository.

Auger means something like "eye" in German I think, I don't really remember but it has a connection to him being a sniper.
Plus, Auger and Ogre are spelled the same, so it doesn't really matter IMO. It's just a name.

same story in forbidden planet and a1 comics in glasgow….
methinks this is a diamond uk screwup and they will be available soon...
@Sir:
YOU WORK IN A BOOK STORE??!
SRLY, make the naruto books 6000$ and give people good offers at One Piece!!!
I was an intern, not a miracle worker. Besides, my internship there ended yesterday.
For those wondering what the baroque works title's color looks like.
Odd, the color on the binding is a different color (purple-pink). I actually like the Easter-looking color better than this putred yellow shit, it's much easier on the eyes.

Haha, i knew someone might come back with this. 'Auge' means eye, (augen is the plural) but i dont think auger means anything in german. I know it doesn't really matter but…. isn't it cooler when the characters name actually means something? I'm probably just nitpicking, but he's a fave chara of mine XD
Getting hold of the volumes annoys me more than anything viz has done, though. Amazon (uk) refuses to stock them consistently until its a month late, and even if they're in FP, i'm forced to fork out £40 for five new volumes. Almost twice as much as i get them from amazon for! Well, at least this is the last batch~
Just got my hands on my first OP volume(22) and the quality puts online scans to shame. Up until now I found your discussions about translation abit y'know dumb and picky but after I read "mutt mutt fruit" I was like the fuck?? What's wrong with dog dog fruit??? Don't tell me akainu will be translated to red mutt?(Does viz even translate the admirals names?) Btw I found it funny that waterstones had like 5 volumes of one piece and 40 or so of naruto.
Viz had a footnote in Vol. 34 covering the Admirals' names, and Akainu was still Red Dog. Mutt Mutt is like the only holdover from the 4Kids era other than Zolo left. It comes up again with Jyabura, so steel yourself.
Ghaa even jyabura? Might you know how many color walks viz have done?

Well yeah, I like it when names have meanings, and he's a fav of mine too (all of the BB crew to be honest, since the first time I saw them) but it just doesn't matter that much to me.
I just order from the book depository, they ship fast and kinda cheap (about 7$ when I preordered each speed up volume)
Ghaa even jyabura? Might you know how many color walks viz have done?
As far as I know there is just 1 translated color walk.
Auger means something like "eye" in German I think, I don't really remember but it has a connection to him being a sniper.
Auge may mean eye in German, but the actual pirate John Augur is a much, much more likely basis for the name.
I knew Augur sounded familiar to me. xD
Anyone think that Viz will release the databooks? They have been putting parts of Blue in every Shonen Jump for awhile now, and it would be nice to release it if they already have parts of it translated. Also, I've had Color Walk 1 on order from RightStuf since their last Viz sale(I think March(?)) and it still hasn't been shipped. It's still on backorder. Anyone else with this problem?
The mutt-mutt thing bothered me too. Since "mutt" is used to refer to a dog that is mixed with different breeds, and the whole point of having the "model" system is so that the the fruit singles out one single breed.
The mutt thing is weird but kinda of interesting since they won't be pure bread models when humans eat the fruit (unless you count the beast form).
Someone may've mentioned this already, but I'm reading through volume 46 right now and they have chapter 448 listed as 447, so 447 shows up twice :P
Edit: Fixed
Someone may've mentioned this already, but I'm reading through volume 46 right now and they have chapter 448 listed as 477, so 477 shows up twice :P
With the speed up and all, you should expect for them to make mistakes here and there.

Just so nobody gets confused, as I did when reading your post. Chapter 448 is listed as 447. 447 comes up twice.

Whoops, fixed that. But yeah, wasn't a big deal at all. Just like when Aisa spoke in engrish during a part of skypeia. Typos and small mistakes like that really seem to stick out to me so I figured I'd point them out as I'm rereading the series :P
I bought the June volumes, plus 4 of the May volumes (they didn't carry volume 48. >_<) and the July issue of Shonen Jump today. I love all this One Piece goodness. :3

I do. I've had mine on order around the same time. It's really annoying, actually.
About to finish vol. 52 (got all the June volumes yesterday), and I noticed one thing - Apoo's laugh is now "Ah Bah Bah Bah!" instead of " Apapapapapa!".

So now it actually sounds like a laugh?
They did that to Hogback and Foxy too, and waffle around with Whitebeard.
@Cyan:

How does A Bah Bah Bah sound more like a laugh then Apapapa? Neither really sound like laughs…
Just got vol49-53. I like the image on the back of 51. It would have been nice to see on the cover of a US Jump.
Viz has joined in with many other publishers from America and Japan to combat illegal scanlations.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-06-08/u.s-japanese-publishers-unite-against-manga-scan-sites
Viz Press Release
it is self defeating for them, if it wasn't for scans available on the web i would have never been exposed to any of the titles I currently buy. I am sure I am not the only one.
because these sites exist, they sell more manga elsewhere in the world I think. if they would release titles at the same time as Japan or a slight delay given translation then there would be no problem but they insist on being months behind so what else is a fan to do..

Sales in North America for manga are actually down so this move makes sense. In fact some fans who read scanlations aren't even aware that's there's legal English publications out there.
sales are down because the economy sucks…
I repeat I would buy NONE of the titles i currently do if I had not been introduced to them by scans on the web.
reading them online made me want to own them...

But you have to remember that there are people who think like this:
my motto is why buy it when I can get it for free?
@Badass:
But you have to remember that there are people who think like this:
That motto only works for porn, let's face it.
How right you are. But, still, he referred to scanlations and manga there.
@Cyan:
That motto only works for porn, let's face it.
Come on man, you're on the internet! You know better than that!
I know personally VIZ knew and would allow for scanslations to exist for the very point Verilance is bring up which I agree with. That you can be exposed to a series for free and then decide to buy it, as I do for One Piece. Before the down turn of the economy, this was an exceptable lost for them.
But you also have to remember the flip side to that argument… if you can preview a manga for free, you might ALSO decide not to buy. Which is want they do not want from a business stand point.
Case in Point: I have the first 10 volumes of Naruto, when i still thought the series was good and was buying them in North America at the rate in which they were released. Once I read ahead and became bored or put off of the series... I stop buying them. If I didn't read ahead of Naruto, I for certain would have bought a few more volumes before I realized "Oh this is starting to SUCK."
Many businesses can make a profit off of an uninformed consumer.
Hmm, well honestly….One Piece would've fallen into relative obscurity in the US had it not been for scans. They released it at such a slow pace we were ELEVEN YEARS behind Japan until just 6 months ago. The anime dub was so horrendously mishandled by 4kids and Viz put One Piece on a back burner for so long, the fan community for One Piece would not have been NEARLY large enough to make the speed-up possible if it weren't for fan translations / scans.
I certainly wouldn't have gotten into manga without DBZ anime on Toonami....I saw Goku on the first issue of SJ and picked it up back in 2003 and got into manga...I read OP and Naruto, but had I not caught up online and read those series weekly, my interest would likely have faded over the years.
Reading manga WEEKLY was a key point...seeing a few series in their entirety and keeping up with them on a week to week basis is what kept me thinking about manga...and it was from this I got into 20th Century Boys, Fullmetal Alchemist, Hunter x Hunter, etc.....I wouldn't have bought those series if I hadn't read chapters week to week of One Piece and Naruto, if I hadn't seen those series in their entirety.
Viz and other companies are not addressing the real problem here - if they want fans to ignore crappy (compared to actual volume releases....unless the changes like zolo annoy you that much that the supperior quality of the artwork doesn't outweigh the seemingly decreasing number of edits), they need to put up the manga on their site the same week it's out in Japan.
Anime and manga are dying in the US, not because of oversaturation of scans on the internet, but because new fans are not being pulled in....Toonami is now dead and very few anime are on the air anymore in the US. Where can new fans be found? Do we want series like One Piece unedited? ABSOLUTELY! It was editing that killed the series here. However, they need more gateway anime like DBZ and Pokemon, roping in young and unsuspecting kids who flip on the TV after school.
Japan, anime airs on TV all the time WEEKLY. Manga magazines come out WEEKLY. Manga advertisements are everywhere. In the US, Yu-Gi-Oh! is done, the Pokemon anime craze (not the games, which are my favorite series!)....yeah that was back in the late 90's, and DBZ ended almost 8 years ago on TV in the US....Toonami is completely dead, and the only thing interesting Adult Swim has to offer is FMA Brotherhood.
Furthermore, the economy is tanking....and no amount of bloated socialist programs or further levels of INEFFECTIVE government are going to remedy a problem that they are ultimately the cause of....in fact, on our current path, it's likely we could enter a globa recession...depression, WORSE than the Great Depression. The signs are out there, the economic system is just completely crumbling. No one presidency is to blame, it's built up over the years.
If times are just going to get tougher, Viz has actually got a good opportunity...manga is a relatively cheap form of entertainment. The problem is, BRINGING IN NEW FANS TO EXPAND THE MARKET. DBZ was a gateway anime and yes it was edited for kids. They tried to replicate this formula with One Piece (4kids) and it failed miserably...editing more "adult" (I use quotes because even unedited it is intended for kids in Japan) series does not help the problem. The truth of the matter is, there is nothing so offensive in the vast majority of shonen series that they should be edited. Nothing in One Piece is unsuitable for teens....unless Viz forgets that many of the classic novels kids read in middle school and highschool contain far more mature langauge and themes than anything a Japanese shonen manga has to offer. Any parent that would complain about cursing in a book clearly marked "T" for teen or a show like DBZ certainly would not have a leg to stand on (in legal terms).
I've gotten a bit off track it seems. My point is essentially, kids are no longer nearly as exposed to anime / manga as they used to be with Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and DBZ ending / becoming less prominent and no big series taking their place. Heck, even Naruto was taken off Cartoon Network.
Viz however, has the perfect medium. If the key to drawing in customers is constant exposure, they should release manga weekly - NEW CHAPTERS WEEKLY just like scanlators. This is the only way they can draw fans towards their product and away from scanlation. Just taking away sites like onemanga offers very little solution to the problem. We've already seen it was weekly scans that sustained the One Piece fan community for the dark years of 4kids' dub and viz's neglect of the series.
The internet manga and anime community has grown so much larger, these companies should not be seeking to stamp them out, but rather, to draw them in. They should be providing forums for manga / anime discussion, updates on One Piece from Japan, WEEKLY scans of the series, etc.
It's the only way I can see them increasing sales of their product. While it is certainly wrong for the opperators of a site like Onemanga to make money off of someone elses liscensed material, it's up to viz to get series like OP out faster or fans will turn elsewhere. Unless they can offer an alternative in their own scans, I can't see this as a winning battle for Viz. Rather, it would seem taking away sites like onemanga, one of the few conduits left through which new fans can be drawn in (few anime left on TV, decreasing amount of B&N and other bookstores, and decreasing number of new series available given personel cuts at viz and other companies with a struggling economy), may ultimately just be shooting themselves in the foot.
I know personally VIZ knew and would allow for scanslations to exist for the very point Verilance is bring up which I agree with.
Can I ask how "personally" you know Viz.
@Vongola_Boss_XI:
brah brah brahhaha.
Wow. Should I read through all of this?
I think you should. It would be an enlightening experience =) jk
I hereby dub thee AGOG 2.0.
But can you really expect Viz to put fresh, new, chapters weekly online for absolutely no compensation at all? They could drown it in ads like Funi does with the simulcast, of course. That may work.
But, I doubt it will.
