The different VAs listed is fine. The only problem I see is that the trivia section lists the completely unrelated Sailor Moon and Metal Gear statements.

I always find it hilarious when Ocean and FUNi fans are brawling with each other.
FUNi fans say that Ocean ruined the first bunch of Z episodes with their editing, while Ocean fans says that FUNi is not true enough to the Japanese version like the Ocean version is.
And the DB Wikia is really the most horrid place to ever look for accurate information. Better to wait when the Daizex Wikia finally goes online.
-
Ocean is horrible that's my two cents
off topic: one thing I don't like about wiki is when it comes to movies under plot people tend to write the entire movie out. For example I wanted to see what rambo first blood was about. It told me what happened from begining to end. It could of just as easily read: drifter harrassed by cops, cops learn that there fucking with a bad ass green baret.
-
The true hilarity is that the Ocean Group dub of the 'first two seasons', written, directed, casted, and produced by FUNimation. Barry Watson flew up to Vancouver every week to work on it, then they ran out of money and he got tired of flying around so much so he brought it down to Texas. They're bickering as if the ideology of the dub changed much, if at all.

Yeah, that's why I said it's hilarious when FUNi fans pull the "Ocean ruined DBZ and FUNi saved it" card.
Especially now that they're BAWWWWing over the fact that Over 9000 is removed from Kai.
-
Someone is complaining about that shit ?
What ?
-
I linked to an example on the previous page.
Here's a pretty good example of a whiny dub fan who just can't support Kai out of principle:

Incase people don't know, there are two different Ocean Dubs. We have the first Ocean dub, which is actually done by FUNimation. Though it is a seperate dub from the FUNimation dub, but with nearly same amount of mistranslations. The dub had the first 13 episodes and movies of Dragonball dubbed, while it had the first 67 (now 53) dubbed along with the first 3 movies (which isn't bad, its uncut but edited on TV like DBKai). To me, a better name for this dub is retro FUNimation, since FUNimation had the license and it was a dub before their main dub.
The next Ocean dub is Westwood Media dub. For Dragonball and Dragonball GT, they had Blue Waters for voices. For Dragonball Z, they had Ocean Group for voices. Dragonball and Dragonball GT had an accurate dub, with the original music intact. The lines from what I've heard are accurate. They had all of the episodes for both series dubbed, no A Grand Problem bullshit. Their Dragonball Z dub is a copy of FUNimation. The only difference is that they use Ocean voices, recycled Megaman (cartoon) music, and basically is only edited, or at least I think it's only edited. The Dragonball Z dub had episodes 123-291 dubbed.
I'm going to make a website covering the confusing issues with all these English dubs in Dragonball.

I saw the link , even if I didn't click it , but didn't specificaly expect anyone to miss that .
What the seventy billion videos on the internet using it aren't enough ?

http://dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Captain_Dark
This article is FAIL because of this:
"While he goes by the title of lieutenant in his first appearance, it is likely that the title of captain by which Dark is referred to in his second appearance is more accurate, as he is a low-ranking soldier in the Red Ribbon Army and thus is not likely in the league of a lieutenant."
A captain is a HIGHER rank than a lieutenant. :getlost:
-
My lord without even seeing that article…..my god that's unencyclopediac......whatever .
-
Captain Dark? That really is someone desperate to try and be pedantic about Dragonball. Even I, a harcore to the soul fan only go so far…
I will count anything in the manga, and on special occasions trust certain canon documents approved by Toriyama such as the Daizenshu if that indeed is canon.
-

FUNi fans say that Ocean ruined the first bunch of Z episodes with their editing,
…when it was FUNimation who did the actual editing
while Ocean fans says that FUNi is not true enough to the Japanese version like the Ocean version is.
The Ocean dub isn't any truer to the JP version than the FUNimation dub.
-
Here is a true story. I don't think the video is still up, but someone uploaded the first episode of Dragonball dubbed by FUNimation back in 1995. It was when they used Ocean Group for voices. So the uploader called it FUNimation/Ocean dub. This dumbass who posted a comment stating that the uploader needed to do his/her homework, because FUNimation had "nothing" to do with the dub, and that calling it the FUNimation dub was incorrect, and that calling it Madman/Harmony Gold was. I'm not joking. If that user did his homework, he would know that Harmony Gold had a different dub, and that Madman had absolutely NOTHING to do with the dub.
-
There are a lot of people who know nothing about these things. Usually they congregated at YouTube.
-
i cant wait to see Kai in 2 weeks.
plus theres another anime debuting the same night as Kai :D -
Check this out, its a website where people complain about the Dragonball Z dub.
-
You mean an eight year old thread from AnimeNation that hasn't been posted in since 2006.

@Brad:

Yep, and its fun reading it too.
-
Please bringing up old threads is gonna bring lots of unneeded drama .
Hell I have a few "Who thinks One Piece sucks" threads marked that were not postedin since 2004 or so , but I didn't post em even if they are hilarious .
-
Our friend Heath sat down and review FUNimation's release of the first thirteen episodes. Does the presentation and dub hold up to FUNimation's claims?
-
Bah, got charged customs for my Dragon Box 3. I never got charged customs before from Rightsuf, though I noticed they didn't make the price down on the box this time. I hope they're not going to stop marking down the packages.
-
I bought the set early at Anime Central. The dialogue is much truer to the original script than the last, the attack names were left the same, and they even yell "It's over 8000!". Hopefully the overly critical Dragonball fanbase will stop complaining now… though I doubt it
-
Sean Schemmel's version of the theme song is kinda laughable
autotune

Read the new SJ issue and noticed theres a DB film out next month Called Dragonball: The Curse of the Blood Rubies.
Anyone getting it and i like to know who plays the voice of Young Goku ?(its been 9-10 years since i watched Dragonball)
-
Okay guys, I need your help.
I am planning to buy Kai to finally get what the whole fuss about DBZ is. Is it absolutely important for me to watch Dragonball first, or can I watch the later events without much prior knowledge? I do intend to watch the whole franchise if I like it enough (which I'm fairly certain I should), but I'm trying to figure out if I should use extra money to get the DB sets along with Kai volume 1 or only get Kai volume 1 and save some money.
Thanks for anyone who gives their opinion. It will help.
-
Dragonball is the better series overall, but other than that…
Z/Kai has a decent self contained starting point. You'll be a little lost on who all these random group of friends are, and the enigma that is Piccollo... but it starts at a decent enough spot that brings you up to speed by the end of the first episode, but you are obviously missing out on how all the characters met and development and such.
If you're planning to spend the money ANYWAY, and plan on getting the original ANYWAY, then just downright start with Dragonball. Watch the story unfold in order, as it was intended.
(Though the big earth shattering shocks and surprises are all such common knowledge at this juncture, it might be a moot point.)

I have a very vague idea of who is who. I've seen many images of Piccolo, Vegeta, Krillin, etc. More than that, it's the plot itself I'm concerned about. I know the basic plot is about the search for the Dragonballs and such, and I've heard Demon Rin talk about a lot of things once before, but I still don't know nearly enough to jump the shark, so to speak.

It's been confirmed it's being delayed. So Viz is behind the ball on that one. Apparently the review copies only had the original Japanese version and the original 1995 dub. The delayed release might imply that they might work on uncut dub.
-
Starting with DBZ is like starting at Shippuuden or Laboon.
Just don't do it.
And don't watch the dub. Kai's dub is pretty damn good, but DB is extremely sub-par (though much better than Z and GT).

98% of the American fanbase started with Z, so, you wouldn't be missing out on more than anyone else did. And a lot of people prefer Z over the original (And I can understand why, the fighting is crazier) but…
The option is there to start from the beginning, and you plan on starting from the beginning? Then do so. Most stories work best that way.
-
The problem with starting with Z is that a lot of the characters you meet at the start turn out to be fodder fast. At least with the original, characters like Yamcha and Chiaotzu really aren't that important…but do more and seem to make it more interesting with what than they do than "they died again...or mean nothing". It's because we started with Z that people seem to think DB is all about the "super-extreme fights" instead of the intended comedy/fighting/adventure hybrid that made Japan love it so much and inspired the likes of Oda...and Kishimoto.
-
I've still got a little time to think it over. Thanks for the input though guys, it will help in the long run.
-
Yeah. If you start with the original, you'll care about the characters. If you start with Z, quite a few of them will just be random fodder and you get none of the impact or emotion behind their actions.
Start with the original.

But these are legitimate complaints. Just as legitimate as the complaints against 4Kids' terrible One Piece dub. FUNimation still does not use ki, Kiko-Hô, pronounce 'Kienzan' correctly, call Tenshinhan by his proper name, or seperate 'power level' from 'ki'.
Really (and this isn't specifically addressed to you), I think it's hilarious for One Piece fans (or most modern day anime fans) to adore the innaccurate Dragon Ball dubs, but turn around and bad-mouth dubs like Naruto or whatever the current hot show is for having a bad dub for whatever reason that likely has nothing to do with its accuracy.
-
I reckon a lot of this is pure laziness. I watched the entire anime of Z then I realised it was more than that, now I own the whole lot and love it all. The problem is people persisting on calling it just DBZ.
-

I 100% agree with you. FUNi did a lot of good things, but they've left some really bad things too. It's really stupid, because now you have the hardcore dub fans complaining about too much change and the hardcore sub fans complaining about too little change.
I'd also like to add Freeza and Kaio's voice, as well as some poorly translated title cards to your list.
Still, I find some things to be a little too harsh on Kai's dub, like complaining about the "Last time/next time on Dragon Ball Z Kai". It's just a single line of dialogue.

It's called nostalgic ignorance. It's pretty damn annoying and I just can't help but facepalm when I see something like "DBZ's dub is the only good dub out there, the rest sucks".
-

…I assume you meant "...still DOESN'T use..." there, and yeah, those are rather annoying. Though when it comes to them mispronouncing "Kienzan"... they mispronounce roughly 50% of any Japanese words/names they ever use. Like, say, the "Akoomah" of D.Gray-man, the "Keeshin" from Soul Eater, or how about the lovely miss "Uhkeera" from School Rumble? Of course, they're not the only ones who do this, but it's annoying nevertheless.
-
I think we should all go out and drink some sake.

I second you Robby, give me a few mins to play more Sonic Adventure Battle 2. I started playing it again yesterday.

Most US fans were started on Z because that's the order we were given it (Really, they gave us the first 13 eps of Dragon Ball First, but they still never showed us the meeting of Kuririn, Tenshinhan, Piccolo, etc)
You're now in a good position of having the whole thing in order available to you. Take advantage of it! If you're gonna eventually do it all, start with DB and work your way up to Z or Kai (I recommend Kai… seriously... it's so much better pacing wise)
...Also, repeat after me:There is no GT... There is no GT... No GT... at all..

I haven't seen any of these shows, so I don't know if they genuinely mispronounce these words and you're just really bad at typing up the pronounciations, but…
"Akuma" WOULD be pronounced "Ah-Koo-Mah", Kishin WOULD be pronounced "Kee-Sheen", And I don't know what you're doing with "Uhkeera", so no comment there, but... yeah. -

I decided to go along with what you guys are saying, so I'll save up and get DB and Kai at the same time. I may eventually get some of the original Z, but only if there are any good filler arcs actually worth watching and buying that you guys could recommend. But since Kai is new with a new dub and remastered animation, I'll be starting fresh with that. Oh and is there any of the movies out in the US worth the purchase? I'll write any suggestions down and make a note when saving up and buying.
I was honestly shocked to see that FUNi released 30 episodes sets for DB in just 4 50 dollar box sets. If only we could get that for One Piece, although I know why they can't.
Oh and on the comment of Akuma and Kishin, I know what people think about leaving things untranslated, but I think in a case like this it works. Especially in D.Grayman, because in the Japanese version the commoners confuse the Akuma with folktail demons and monsters, so it makes it easier for the US viewer to understand that. I guess there could have been other ways to do it though.
The only dub I think goes too far is Bleach, even though I still like the dub. I understand leaving attack names and Zanpakutou names untranslated, especially when they are in Spanish or German, but there was no need not to translate Spirit Key.
-
Read the manga. Skip the anime. Get money.

D.Gray-man is set in an English-speaking world (at least where they are), and the word "Akuma" has been spelled out as such in several places. In this case, it'd be flat-out incorrect to translate it.

The School Rumble-example is particularly annoying, seeing how they at the same time get several other characters' names perfectly right. (For example, they clearly had no trouble properly pronouncing "Harima" or "Yakumo".) Or to say something a bit more relevant to the topic, remember "Hiroodegarn", the villain from DBZ movie 13? Again, putting far too much pressure on the "u"-sound, even though one could barely even hear that there was an "u" in his name in Japanese.

Yeah, but we pronounce things differently in English than the Japanese do, even if it's a Japanese word in question. Just as how they pronounce our English words differently.
Oh and about GT, that wasn't even based on the manga, right? Is it even worth viewing?
-
Rin Rin Rin , why do you deried GT so much ?
Just saying realy . While I found that what I know of Evolution just makes it damn sure I wouldn't enjoy it , (though I "should" see it , even if I don't want to) and I kind of cringed at Hellsing920 saying he actualy liked it , he had a point in saying that the DB fanbase is realy anoying in how they deride and gangrape anyone who has even the slightest thing positive to say about GT .
Well….I prefer it to Z . There , I said it .
