@Arei:
This. I cannot understand how people love 7, and hate 8. 8 was amazing. The junction system was not that difficult. It was funny as hell, beautiful, witty, heart wrenching, heart warming, and soul destroying at the same time.
I played 7 after 8,9 and 10. I heard all sorts of incredible rumors about 7 on how it was better way better than the other episodes. They even made a spinoff movie with AC
That is my take on 7
I think it is a great game. An overrated title but a good one nevertheless. A title where there are emotional and memorable moments. Something current game lacks (FPS overrated genre)
Cons:
There are too many useless fights and story parts. WHat was even the point of cross dressing for a whole hour.
The story lacks maturity. The Shinra villains are one sided corporate douche. This game is 100 percent greenpeace who should not be using medcine, boats, clothes, industrial food, showers if they think mother earth is that great.
The characters lack development. Aerith talked 70 percent of the time about nature earth and she obviously had a thing for Cloud. This is boring ! It lacks substance. You wonder what Vincent, Yuffie and Caith sith are here for. There are too many characters to develop them all properly. You are asked to redo the 80 hours long game to see waht would happen if you pick this character.
Every FF9 characters had a better development and they really all have their personal moments on a regular basis.
The part at Red Canyon was boring like hell. Another hour to tell you that technology sucks and mother earth is good. Give me a break !
BTw, Sephiroth's motivation was not as interesting as other villains. He keeps bragging about his mom. I think Mihawk or Akuma of street fighter are much more interesting antagonist.
The middle of the story is boring like hell. Thank Aeris death made me go on.
You seem to be visiting a lot of places for the sake of it (this should be the side quest not the main storyline)
When Red said "Forget about Midagar ! We gotta worry about the planet !" I was like about the innocent people of Midgar who did not torture you. I lol hard because it was so one dimensional. It looked as one dimensional as the Avatar plot when the comical stereotype army guy said "That is how you take care of the coakroaches ! Now let's wipe out this civilization so I can get back to base and eat raw meat." The lifestream rambling and nature seemed too perfect in my taste just like the Naavis culture that was flawless.
Barret was the one that said the right thing. He admitted that he caused a lot of harm to the innocent people of Midagar. I liked that.
Pros
The battle system of Materia is simple and pretty good.
The music is good. I personally did not like the colors and the most of the places except for some.
The last arc where Clouds remembers his past is the moment where the story gets more interesting. The characters are finally getting more developed and everyone. This is where the story really flows well.
Aeris death was very well made. I loved the theme. It was really emotional. She should have been developed more if we wanted to care for her more. I was happy that her death was very relevant to get you hype for the final fight.
Sephiroth's introduction was cool when he showed how freaking strong and they created the hype of his strenght. Turning bad after reading a book was not the coolest motivation for such a cool character. I guess Sarah Palin and Sephiroth would make a great pairing.
I liked how Cloud improved as a leader overall in the story.
The best part of the game was the Northern crater the final arc of the game. Descending the crater was beyond real. The tension was rising when you were going deeper to fight Sephiroth. It was amazing. FF7 ad children lacked this epic built up for a real climax.
The Sephiroth final battle was epic. The music was godly and he gave a **** of a time to me. I never understood the point of his attack when he uses the planets of the solar system. Yes, Cloud's speech before the fight was awesome.
The last confrontation between Cloud and Sephiroth in his mind if I am not mistaken was incredible. I love one on one confrontation. The way the battle was shot was awesome. They zoom on each fighters face was aweome before final assault. This scene itself kills the whole advent children movie. Pure simplicity and incredibely climatic.
Overrall, FF7 is an amazing game despite its overhype. The middle is boring but a few great moments made up for it. I loved Return of the Jedi despite the Ewoks and the boring middle.
8 was not perfect (especially the junction system) but the plot was much more interesting and ambiguous. Squall is actually pretty interesting despite his emo design. Squall is nowhere as aweful as Anakin adult of the prequels (Why was he not on the roster of the worst star wars character, F you IGN) or Sasuliet who really pisses me beyone the stratosphere. Squall was actually evolving during the game which makes him more than one dimensional.
The basic plot of a FF is to save the world but there needs to be someting deeper or symbolic. Squall smiling at the end was symbolic and beautiful. You realize that all these moments and diffictul fights built up just for a smile. Something so simple but yet so meaningful because I did not see that one coming. FF7 was like Yahoo we saved the world and the planet is not screwed. Have the characters learned something deeper ? I guess not.
8 ending was confusing for the first five minutes of the FMV sequence but all was well when Rinoa saved Squall.
I love to compare FF8 to Terminator 1 and 2. I love to compare FF7 to Avatar.
However, 8 should have developed the other main characters more in detail like 9 did.
9 was the perfect storyline. Every characters were fleshed and had all their moments regularly. All the characters came to a conclusion.
