I disagree in that I think positive secularism for a society comes out of social stability.
I don't really care if theism dies out, but I would like to see organized religion go extinct.
This times a zillion.

Dying sucks because…you can't experience what's going on around you anymore.
However, if you go when your genetic code determines you should based on age and not other bullshit factors like cancer or some godawful disease, then there's a chance that most of the people and things you enjoyed in life either aren't in good condition or even around anymore. Of course that doesn't make dying fun, but…let's just say I can understand someone on their deathbed being 'ready'.
Anyway, after that, there's literally nothing to worry about.
Do you remember what it was like before you were born?
No?
So the billions of years before your existence you didn't have anything to complain about, it shouldn't be any different afterwards.
In many ways, this is why Oda was spot on with the Chopper FB and it's not like he stumbled on some unique or groundbreaking theory, but you really only 'die' when people forget about you.
And thanks to YouTube that can never happen so we're all immortal now anyway.
...at least until the Earth is engulfed by the Sun.
......or if we somehow get off this rock then until the Heat Death of the universe which will be in 50000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 years.

Except you have experienced life and know you can never get it back again.
Except you should be old and tired and ready to go.
I wouldn't say there's such thing as predetermined age, though you could probably gauge how long a body could last under set normal circumstances.
I've contemplated a few of the things you just said before, though. I don't think you can say we've experienced non-existence, seeing as non-existence is by definition the lack of experience. The idea of pre-birth, though, is very interesting. Contemplating it usually leads me back to the idea of solipsism, for as far as we know, the years of my life are the only eternity I know. The reality of existence cannot be proven further than that of our own minds, and even then, we may only prove our own.
@Tupac's:
Except you should be old and tired and ready to go.
Well death scares the living shit out of me now to the point that it's a phobia. Dunno if I'll ever reach a state when I'll want to go.
I wouldn't say there's such thing as predetermined age, though you could probably gauge how long a body could last under set normal circumstances.
Genetically, we have a predetermined 'maximum age'. This is to say, our organs (ie. cells that make them up) are essentially tagged by our genes for how long they will last.
Now, and this is why I was careful to mention bullshit factors, while we have a 'max' there is no guarantee we'll actually live that long.
Let's say your heart can last a good 80 years but…oh shit! You spent too many days without suntan and you happen to have a venemous set of oncogenes.
Melanoma it is then.
thbbt!
So while you're right in that how we carry out our lives DOES help determine how long we live, there are parts of our body essential to function that have been time stamped from the moment they began mitosis.
If anything this comforts me in that, if I don't die from an X factor beforehand, when you go is literally when you were meant to go.
I figured you were getting at that. There is a maximum potential lifespan. The way you worded it, though, made it seem like you were talking about a predetermined age (human A will die at age 58, human B will die at age 83, etc…), which is poppycock of course.
I believe in a 'God'.
I don't believe that "God' was this old white dude with an insanely long ass beard.
Or a "dude" at all.
I don't even believe in calling "It" 'God'.
I believe in aftershave, but not really an afterlife.
But really to those who believe in an 'afterlife'.
Ask yourselves this one question.
"Can there really be a perfect place for imperfect beings?"
I'm not one of those dickish elitist.
I think a good sum of people who are atheist or don't believe in any afterlife except nothingness have this awful stereotype of being those pseudo-nihilistic Live Journal rejects…
But I don't really need content in an afterlife to to give a random bum a dollar, or help old ladies pass the street.
If I was a vegetable and I asked my wife or any other family member to pull that plug...
I could care less if I entered the afterlife or not.
Because I'd have achieved life to the fullest and watch my son become a man and have grandchildren.
I would achieve "heaven" already, at least to me...
It wouldn't be suicide as I already 'completed life'.
But this is only my opinion.
That sounded like a poem.
@Kairouseki:
That sounded like a poem.
Did it? Oh well everyone has those pseudo-philosophical post once in awhile.
Though now reading it now it does read like a poorly written amateurishly deep poem…
It sounded like a poem because Bill is a genuine good poster in a sea of mediocre and bad posters.
I believe we at least constitute an ocean.
I am a firm believer in the afterlife.

Well, to an extent I am.
It's not to the point where genes say, "You will die at X time.", however, organs do have a specific max life-span that is unique to each individual give or take a dozen years or so.
So if some organ goes to shit does that mean you're dead?
Well, no, it could just mean that organ does't function properly and with modern treatments life may actually be extended.
So what was once a death sentence via genes is now more of an approximation.
This crazy SF movie interests the fuck out of me by the way.

I don't realy know, I'm just a punny human.
I don't realy want to know, because It will make this life worthless if it exist, and if it doesn't It will change me in ways that I can't predict.
I don't really care, because I'm finaly getting the hang of this life, I don't want to prepare myself for the next one.
But.. I want to belive, because oblivion it's… the obvious answer, I think that there is a trick here.
My crazy theory is that each one of us is trapped in a time cycle, we born, then we live, then we die, we go back to being reborn as ourselves, as "souls" are outside time, we just keep going in circles, forever, and by some quantum bullshit everyone who existed is still alive, relative to them because they are trapped in their cycles. We learn a little and by each cycle we become somewhat different, and happier with the ressults, people fall in love at first sight, have dejavus or feel something familiar in a new place because they subcons...(whatever it is written) remember their past cycles.
But that's more as a very lame ci-fi that I use to try to break people's minds, Total Minds Broken: 0.
In the end I would be soo pissed off if I have to spend eternity in hell because I eated ham in a holly friday. I think that is Easter.
I believe in an afterlife…
Of course, it's just me being dead and getting burned up.
You know this thread was a bad idea. I should't get answers for big questions from people on the internet. Especially Otaku

I do believe in Afterlife
Also I had made an interesting observation: Females tend to believe more in afterlife and soul then males…
Why is that??
I do believe in Afterlife
Also I had made an interesting observation: Females tend to believe more in afterlife and soul then males…

Because it's…romantic? Many societies do encourage women to be sensitive and loving, so the idea of being with someone even after death maybe speaks to that.
Obviously I'm generalizing, just wondering if what you say is based on some sort of conditioning.
Hey great guys, lets all analyze some random dude's observation like it has scientific weight.

i freaking love religion:getlost:
From what I have seen, most believers see the concept as a paradise and anyone who isn't selfish enough to believe that would fall into purgatory. It's a very strange idea… I mean, if this paradise exist would there still be people with bad intentions?
These people in heaven... Did they really lose what made them human in the first place? Like any human that chooses to be in a social network or group, there's always hate for anyone outside it, or even that thought that a newcomer may not deserve his/her place there. If heaven really exist, I doubt it's a bunch of human being living a perfect life... unless it's like a cult filled with brainwashed people.
As for my view on afterlife... I don't really think about. Death is the absolute last thing I should be worrying about.
I believe in other dimensions, and that a person's soul moves into another plane of existence after death. However, like our universe, all other dimensions have limits, so even in the afterlife, people die, and then move on. As for their memories, those get erased nearly completely except for residual feelings and intuitions. The souls of things born into this universe have come from other universes, and the universes form networks and loops rather than having definite ends.
One could say that I'm more partial to Buddhism. Well, that's typical of Asians still in touch with their ancestral cultures.
whats about this:
i would meet a guy who believes in everything christanity stands for…
we would get friends and we would discuss what a childkiller would deserve..
he would say that this guy would come to hell.i would agree with him.
after some more discussing we came to the point that i said to him that i dont believe in his god. so what would he say to me...he would say that i will come to hell, cause who doesn
t believe in his god will get that punishment.
so after all even when he got a friend of mine he would think that i would deserve the same punishment as a childkiller just because i don`t believe in his god.
so would i want to have in a so called "heaven" such people around me which would say that cause you don`t believe in a "god" you deserve the same punishment as a childkiller...
is that fair and a real friendship when iam on the same level afterall as a childkiller even when he knows my personality is good enough to get his friend?
That reminds me of a line from a Billy Joel song. "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints." Well, there are supposedly different layers of Hell for different degrees of sins, I don't know. I do agree with you though.
I don't care what happens after I die. Only that I take as many people as I can with me.

… You do realise Dante's Divine Comedy isn't exactly Christian canon, right?
Just saying. That's why I sad supposedly instead of just outright saying there are. You never know though.

IMO there is no your God, or my God. There is just God. To Him someone denying His existence is pretty serious crime. Think of it this way, even for a child thats been killed by someone, there is God who will deal justice. So, in the grand scheme of things, for a believer in God and afterlife, getting murdered isn't THAT bad a thing.
^^ I deny his existence hehe

ahahahahahahahahaahaha, fucking wow.
No seriously, please justify the concept of sending non-believers to hell as something other then God being petty as fuck.
He is speaking the language of bin laden :P
So basically God is that creepy kid from high school who got really secretly angry at all the hot cheerleaders who didn't pay him attention and grew up to be a rapist.
Quit feeding my God complex!

…Does this make me God?
Okay, I am not defending God or anything… So, lay off me. This is just how I see it. In my eyes murder is one of the worst crimes, and only the ugliest scum of the earth would do such a thing.
Everyone has his own ideals and priorities. I would rather die then ever deny existence of God. Thats just how I feel. Bin Laden or anyone else has nothing to do with it. In fact for a person who believes in after life, committing murder would be the most illogical thing to do.
Anyway, I am not here to preach nor debate. I just shared my thoughts. I don't expect anyone to immediately start believing. I am also quite sure that you have all formed your ideals after completely considering the alternatives. I don't agree with you but I am not some asshole who would try to force my ideals upon you.
Anyway, again don't take what I said in wrong context. If you think that someone who doesn't believe in God still deserves his mercy then thats your freedom to think so. I personally think its a hideous crime. Again I am not defending God, nor forcing anyone to agree with me.
No.
Before you were first formed, you didn't exist. Billions and billions of years passed between the start of the universe and your existence. It's just the same thing after you die, I don't understand why people are so afraid of nonexistence when they've already gone through it.
Okay, I am not defending God or anything… So, lay off me. This is just how I see it. In my eyes murder is one of the worst crimes, and only the ugliest scum of the earth would do such a thing.
And so you think atheism or for that matter any theism not concerned with the Abrahamic god is on this level as their both hellbound.
I would rather die then ever deny existence of God. Thats just how I feel.
The concern with the mere existence of god is absurd. Do you seriously value that over living a good life. Why is it of any relevance so long as a life is lived well.
Is Gandhi in hell? Is Socrates? Virtually every person east of Pakistan and north of Malaysia? You do realize this includes Eiichiro Oda himself?
I personally think its a hideous crime.
Explain one thing hideous about it.
Because the propagating of a religion with this as a keystone shifts the role of that God from shepherd expecting righteous living, to a being of petulant ego. A hideous tyrant.

I would rather live, even I have to deny the existence of almighty. Life is wonderful, living is the best thing in the world. Rather die for some vague afterlife perceptions =)
Sorry for the bin laden comment x.x

no you can`t argue with oda…damn you
but see it in this way..hitler would have a chance to come to heaven(i think he was christian..am i wrong?) when he prays enough "ave maria" instead of me just of denying any god...
would be an evil bastard!
saying that reciting enough ave marias will absolve you from every sin you commit is pretty dumb.
Wouldn't:
Random cool dude paul dies…
Paul comes in front of the paradise gates.
Angel xy: Ok Paul let's check how you lived.
dum... di... dum... cool life yeah... good... good...
Oh seems like everything is ok you had a good life and were always helpful to others so you're granted to.... OH!
WHAT do we have here? You didn't believe in god?
Paul: Nope i didn't!
Angel xy: Then burn in fire dude!
AHHHHH!
be hilarious? ...
