NEW ONE PIECE FAN: The GREAT ADVENTURE BEGINS

I heard that Zeff originally cut off his leg to stay alive in the manga but they cut it out in the anime because it was deemed to shocking for kids. Though I prefer the anime version because I like the idea of him saving Sanji by doing it and it fits better with the fact that that he didn't eat.
-
The problem I had with the anime version is that the situation seemed to dictate he'd need to cut off his leg to save his own life, anyway. He was able to save Sanji by cutting off his own leg to eat it since it allowed him to give Sanji all the food. It's also an incredibly badass thing to do. He would have had to eat the thing raw.
-
Coby annoyed the hell out of me, but it's a short lived problem.
Meant to reply to this before. I think the only version of Coby I can stand is him in the manga. Hearing him whine/ramble/etc. in either language bugs the hell out of me.

Something I found funny was that in the manga, Zeff ate his leg, in the anime, Zeff cut his leg off. Big difference there. But 4kids edited it so that Zeff actually did eat his leg, instead of cutting it off. The only thing they ever did somewhat right.

Coby's hair is at stake!

That is so retarded. Damn 4KidsBut

No, they kept it the same as Toei (just changed the blood color).

I feel sorry for those who had to put up with it, and 10 episodes in and still waiting for the Luffy and Arlong fight, but that looks to be next episode :)

Just watched episodes 2-4 in japanese and I've just realized that Krillin's voice in japanese is the same as Luffy's. Is there any other "crossover" voice actors from dbz, full metal alchemist etc.

There are plenty! For example… Well, I dunno if I should spoil who this is yet, so I'll just use the name HAMMY. HAMMY has the same voice actor as Piccolo. Aaand... Dunno if I should spoil her name either, but there's an old woman later on that has the same voice actress as Goku.
-
Names don't really spoil anything if you're careful.
Takeshi Aoni : King Piccolo/Dracule Mihawk
Toshio Furukawa : Piccolo/Ace
Chikao Ohtsuka : TaoPaiPai/Gold Roger
Takeshi Kusao : Trunks/Saul/Kohza
Masako Nozawa : Goku/Gohan/Goten/Kureha
Ryusei Nakao : Freeza/Erik
Joji Yanami : Narrator/Gan Fall
Naoki Tatsuta : Oolong/Bege
Kouji Yada : Dr Gero/Zeff
Kozo Shioya : Majin Buu/Genzo/Pappag
Hideyuki Hori : Ginyu/Kuma
Shigeru Chiba : Pilaf/Buggy
Ryuzaburo Otomo : Dabura/Croc -
The most hilarious one for me is Bin Shimada: Broly/Wapol/Foxy.

So do you prefer the Japanese or English voices?
-
Crossword, that is one of the best things I've read today.
-
So do you prefer the Japanese or English voices?
I haven't seen enough to be 100% sure but so far voices I prefer in Japanese are Luffy (it's really unique and has this sort of energy behind it that's hard to understand) and Captain Morgan's. In english I think I prefer Shanks and Nami, though this is likely to change further down the line. The rest I'm undecided.
What about you guys? Seeing as you probally prefer jap voices is there any voices you prefer in Funi's dub? Or going to extremes 4kids?

Man it really is interesting to read the view of someone who is NOT spoiled and actually watches One Piece for the very first time… Man I wish I could go back, every day when I returned from school I watched One Piece on German TV having no idea what will happen next... and the old episodes (Alabasta etc.) where actually well dubbed, then the dub and the cuts became crap in the Water 7/Enies Lobby arc and now it's great again in the Thriller Bark arc... okay whatever. I even liked watching those Post-Alabasta fillers because I didn't know that they were unnecessary, I thought I was just watching another episode of One Piece. :D
-
12 episodes in and liking the fight so far but next episode looks like it's gonna be the one where it gets good what with Luffy destroying the map room etc.
-
You should buy the manga's. There is a downside to the English translations, some 4kids terms like Zolo and Rogue Town are kept.
-
Why you do this?
-
Wow, I'm really surprised you watched only 3 OP eps and already made an account here. For me, it took quite a few more episodes for me to get really get into op. And I only made an account here long after getting into the series.

It's weird isn't it? Something about it made it stand out compared to other animes. It seemed, don't know how to describe it, well fantastic I suppose. It had good characters and I love anything to do with pirates. It also seemed more realistic, maybe not at first but in the Baratie arc (when I really started getting into it) Sanji says he's lost too much blood, you'd never get that in Dbz (well the funi version anyway).
I actually don't know why I created an account on here so soon. Guess I just thought why not post what a brand new fan with no idea what's going to happen thinks about the series.
Arlong Review: 9/10
This was a really great arc. Good villains, brilliant ones come to that. Epic scenes and music, hint hint Walk to Arlong Park. Had good emotion, mainly scenes with Nami. Good battles, Sanji and Ussop vs Fish men (wasn't too keen on the Arlong fight). Overall a good arc. I could type out an essay on how good it was. -
The arc you're going to watch next, the Loguetown Arc, is also really good. It's the first One Piece arc that had filler in the anime, but don't worry, the filler in this arc is pretty good! In fact one of the fillers was supposed to be in the manga but it was cut for time (the one with Daddy Masterson).
-
Just started watching it today, wasn't keen on the Buggy thing but next episode looks to be good.

The Loguetown Arc starts on episode 48. The 2 Buggy episodes were based off of manga cover stories and not actual chapters.

it seems I keep learning something new about something 4kids did to One Piece every day

Oh wow, just when I thought I already saw the worst…
-
Watched the Buggy Adventure Arc, it was ok, nice to see his crew and Gaimon back but the whole plot didn't really intrest me. I think the lady is alvida for some reason but not sure.

That's one of those things that you'll appreciate a lot more when you look back later. It's one of only two cover stories Oda did that got animated.

And that's a shame. I really like the other ones.
-
@dirt:
What? Why?
Well she is looking for Luffy and Alvida so far is the only female villain that he's faced. Dunno why she's so skinny though.

You'll find out why soon enough.
-
Okay I really have the suspicion that you're trolling now… which means you already know that the lady is Alvida and you're just saying that you wouldn't know... but sorry if you aren't trolling, but dunno, it just feels like it.

Good god! This just makes me so happy that I didn't start watching one piece until after the 4Kids debacle.
And what the hell? Sanji's voice sounds like mobster or something. XD -
Same here. Sanji will always have a perpetual blocked nasal passage and New York accent in my head.
FUNimation definitely needs to use that voice for
! Duval. Nothing else will do that moment justice.
-
I'm so glad I've never seen the 4kids dub.
My experience will never be tainted by that god-forsaken crap-fest.. -
That clucking has made my fuggin' day XD
I am SO GLAD Funimation has wiped up the puke that was this dub.
-
Enjoying the Logue town arc, liked the whole Daddy the father episode, Sanji's was alright too. And how great is Smoker?!

Just remember, there's a pretty terrible filler arc approaching (episodes 54-61), so I'd suggest to do what I and I'm sure others did there and skip it. Don't want to ruin the perception of a great series with that, trust me.

There's important info in the last episode of the first filler arc IRC.

I thought it was ok for fillers

The ending of Loguetown is one of my favourite OP moments.

It's a lot better if you don't know that it's filler. Way to go…

Oh, come on, it wasn't that bad. In fact, I actually rather enjoyed that particular filler, and thought it was one of the better ones in the series. Sure, it was a bit slow, contained a few plot-holes and the Straw Hats were acting a bit out of character at times, but I still thought it was pretty fun.

Yeah, these were bad, but admittedly, they are somewhat amusing. The one that really made me facepalm was during Zoro's fight with Mr. 1. After all the dog puns, Mr. 1 says Zoro is all bark, no bite…then Zoro barks like a dog offscreen, and Mr. 1 simply says, "You're not funny.":ermm:

I say in this case it's better to read the manga first, just a little ahead of Loguetown (only one or two chapters is enough!), and then continue watching the anime because they mixed up filler with cool canon scenes… And well, it might not bother some people but i felt unhappy when I saw it.
This way you can also see what it's like to read something first and then watch it.Also do not skip anything, it's good to know how bad or good a filler can be. <-And I'm talking about all filler here. Makes you appreciate the canon story more.
-
I plan to watch it the first time round, you never know I might like it. Will watch some more One Piece later but as for now I'm reading the manga.
