I honestly don't think we're going to see a new crew mate for at least a couple arcs. With the way Oda's taking the story, he probably doesn't want to stick with the general " New Island, Something to Do, Adventure, New Crew Mate" anymore. The SHs probably need someone stronger in their crew, but with the separation serial and the incidents at Marineford, it's obvious he doesn't want to do the expected and add someone new. Although I kinda wish Oda would stick with the old formula :(

I don't see how he can add to the crew "a couple arcs" away when he has to deal with character development and the fact that the journey is half way to its end. Will we have more to read for probably the next 5-10 years? Definitely, but that's because each arc takes months relative to our time, but to the story, they only have probably 5-6 islands left. Do you really think it would be right for someone to join the crew 75% of the way? Oda takes his time in character development, and something he has done amazing well is pace himself throughout the story. He doesn't want to drag the story with that many characters to deal with, he wants to sprinkle in the development in each arc, as he has done with the characters so far.
Do I think he has to have a character join this arc? No, but he still has at least two characters left to join, and he has had a character join every major arc except Skypeia. I don't think he is going to turn away from his normal formula for the story after this arc. He's basically just stepping away from it at the half-way point, and giving everyone a chance to actually "miss" the crews normal interaction and probably develop their abilities off screen, rather than drag the story with developing each of them. After 500 chapters, it's basically a needed (my opinion) breather from the normal way each arc is written, and a needed separation (if only for a short time) of the crew.

Good points but I still think this arc is one of those exceptions (just because of Luffy's recovery*/SH reunition). You're right that Oda will need time developing the characters, but what I meant by my initial post is that within the next 1 or two arcs is when we'll most likely see a new SH, not 75% through the story since we're at, what 50%? Then like 52%-60% through the story.

That depends on your definition of an arc, because the story has really only had 6 major arcs (including the latest one) up to the half-way point. Additionally, he's probably adding at least two more people, as Brook was numbered eight and Luffy wants ten. You could be right, that the differences in this arc will lead him to not add anyone, but Skypeia being the only other arc not adding anyone was because it was basically an outlier from the main plot. There were no marines, no other rival pirates, it was basically a stopping point in the story because it'd be cool to go to a sky island. It did give Usopp his dials, and had some nice Nami character development, but really it was pretty pointless towards the main plot.
This discussion is kind of pointless though, we'll probably find out the answer to this in a few weeks. Oda can really do anything he wants with the plot.

I can't really tell you how his schedule works, maybe he's taking the amount of breaks he normally does. I don't really pay attention to how many breaks he normally takes. It could just be the fact that this arc has a lot of characters that we've been hearing about for years, and we want to see what happens to them next; as a result, we start getting impatient and believe he is taking more breaks than he needs to.
It could be him making sure that the work he puts out in the next few weeks is up to his standards, as this is probably the most important turning point in the story, we're half-way, and he probably wants it to turn out perfectly. This is the catalyst to the latter part of the story, and it's a major turning point for Luffy as a character. I think he wants to have Luffy handle his grief in his own unique way, and not totally stomp all over the character he has created for 500+ chapters (like Naruto).
Also, he really seems to plan his story out well ahead; therefore, I could see him continuing to at least outline the plot a lot farther along in the story during this break. As he probably has to constantly put his new ideas down on paper, change concepts he already planned out, and so forth.
It might be him just making sure he doesn't contradict himself from things he wrote earlier in the series. A lot of authors, Kubo, for example, seem to constantly state something and then contradict it later because for some reason he either doesn't care or doesn't remember what he wrote from earlier. Oda actually seems to care about everything he puts on the paper, I really can't say the same for Naruto or Bleach, both seem to get worse each passing week.
