Not too crazy about any of these. :/
Well, they're direct translations, Geppou means moon step, Soru means to shave, and I know I don't need to explain bakaburg.
I like those terms, I was afraid they're gonna use some weird names for them.

Problem here is, "moonwalk" makes me think of something entirely different. Also, "shave" is just odd any way you look at it.
I kinda like it being moonwalk, but I think moon jump(or bounce? hop? something like that) could maybe be a little better. I just imagined Jango being with the CP9 and using Geppou.
Shave.. yeah, it's weird, but it sounds fine by me since when I see Soru I think of shave.
Went to Borders today.
They had 10 copies of volume 37.
No 34, 35, 36, or 38.
shrug
Shigan - Finger Pistol
Rankyaku - Tempest Kick
Geppou - Moonwalk
Tekkai - Iron Body
Kami-e - Paper Art
Soru - ShaveStupidberg
"Do it with a "boom"!!"
"Men should puff out their chests with pride and a boom!!!… over the ships they build!!!"
Sounds good. Hopefully, they won't go and do anything else stupid to ruin it, because at the moment, it seems like they're actually doing :blink: A GOOD JOB?!
Hmm, my two volumes weren't shipped out yet. Maybe they're waiting for the other three to come in.
Anyway, is anyone else wondering how they're going to handle the Bink's Sake lyrics?

Yeah…I'd have preffered they not translate the Rokushiki techniques…
Why not? They're perfectly translatable.
One Piece doesn't have a strong Japanese feel, I guess you can say, like Bleach or Naruto… so leaving Japanese words untranslated (unless they're the name of a character, or go with a characters persona) is sloppy.

I hope One Piece will be back on that list again sometime in the near future.
Heh. GX is really hanging in there.
sigh hopefully the march volumes will do better.
Why are any of us surprised at this? That's 10 volumes released in two months. Not everyone is made of money. It is silly to compare these to something like Naruto that has one release every so often.
Rightstuf sales are strong, so we know they're not bombing.
Well, that's true. How often did Naruto come up on the list during its two speedups?
And yeah, not only are RightStuf sales strong, but so are sales from other sites. Weren't they doing really well on Amazon too?
Don't know, but I just bought vols 7-54, so I know it's getting plenty of my money!
@Mikey:

All of them at the top of the charts.
Making a comparison between Naruto and OP isn't really fair. The differences in popularity are just too great.
It's like making a comparison between the DVD sales of DBZ and Bleach. The former will outsale the latter by an enormous margin.

That's so true. Heck, just trying to keep up with these releases is practically bankrupting me…

No, it's not. Rokushiki is a form of martial arts, leaving them–just like Zoro's techniques--in Japanese is perfectly acceptable.
How about who gives a fuck?
Translating things that were in Japanese in a Japanese comic to English for an English release… Makes sense to me.
All of them at the top of the charts.

True, but let's not also forget that when they did Naruto, it was only three or four a month, right? And the price was only $7.95…

MARTIAL ARTS = JAPAN = DURRRRHURRRRR
Price of 3 Naruto volumes for a month, then- $23.85
Price of 5 OP volumes now- $49.95
That's a big difference. When the Naruto volumes came, they were cheaper, less to buy, and the economy wasn't as bad as it now is. The fact that OP has made the Top 10 before is proof that people are reading it. Just because the volumes don't make the list, doesn't mean they're not selling well, even though it would be nice to see a few volumes on it.
An English version of a Japanese comic with a fictional form of martial arts. I'm not asking for 'nakama' to be retained for no go reason, I'm expressing for my prefferance of a set of terms important to said story retaining their original Japanese form. I'd do the same Yû Yû Hakusho, Dragon Ball, or any other series that employed such a style. I don't think this is any different than asking the Spanish and French techniques not have their names translated, either.

He's saying that it doesn't really matter, VIZ has done far better and far worse. Translating the names of these techniques are going to make zero difference when the series is said and done. Think about the big picture.

He made them up.
So why should Japanese readers hear Tekkai and instantly understand something of what he's doing, while English readers scratch their heads.

With maybe 5% of the in world culture resembling Japan let alone east Asia. Absolutely right. Let's ignore the story for the nationality of the author. This makes sense.

And your prefence is stupid, so I think it's pretty clear why expecting it to happened doesn't work.
I'd do the same Yû Yû Hakusho, Dragon Ball
One heavily japanese set story, and one mostly chinese based story.
The logic of it all is immense.

Oda deliberately made those different languages. They're different languages in Japan too. This is in no way, like Mr Katana and Japanese culture based Zoro. It's neutral. Translating the names is not a bad choice nor is it objectionable.

When did I say they absolutely have to go back and reprint the volumes? I spoke only on my preference, I put forth leaving the names in Japanese was not sloppy. I never made any demands or suggested the sky was falling.

This was a fault of my choice of words, but I would have no problem having footnote translations. I simply would prefer the techniques be reffered to their Japanese names in-dialogue.
Given the huge number of variations amongst the superhuman skills, that's not something I'd like to see.

It's funny because I never said or suggested you said that.
Who… cares? Goddamn.
I can see it now…First it was Kami for Skypiea, and now for Water 7 it will be the Rokushiki techniques and "Do it with a BOOM." Except the latter is much less severe...sigh well nitpickers will always need something to complain about in here. Sucks for them, really.
The difference is that viz did it right this time.
@Zach:

Then there was a misunderstanding on either my part or yours (likely mine), because when I read "think about the big picture" I was under the impression you thought I was being shortsighted and decrying a crime against humanity (for lack of a less humorously melodramatic term).
I never suggested Viz didn't have their reasons for translating the names, I do however do not agree with their decision.
@Mikey:

This post accomplishes absolutely nothing. Discussing is being had about the product this thread is dedicated to. It's a perfectly reasonable discussion to have, at that.
Sheesh, all this because somebody expresses a differing opinion. :p

We invite fresh ideas! But scorn doofusness.

Ha, it's alright. Sorry about my post. Personally I'm glad they translated them into English, I just don't see what the big deal is about leaving them in Japanese. Because they sound "cooler"? If the Japanese read it like we do, then I would say Viz did it right by translating it. I was already kinda miffed that they didn't translate the attacks in Dragon Ball, but ah well…
What's the big deal? It's an english translation of a manga in Japanese. Therefore, everything in Japanese in the original publication should be translated into english.
@Badass:

I completely agree.
Except for character names. I'm glad Viz was faithful on this by not translating character names such as Bartholomew Kuma (Bartholomew Bear) and Aokiji (Blue Pheasant).
@Mikey:

Fist of the Sun, Fist of the Lord of Worlds and Circle of Chi aren't exactly attack names that sound even remotely well.
That and it's a manga shrouded in Eastern influences.
I'm glad the Rokushiki names are translated though.
Why would VIZ 'translate' Sogeking, but not Aokiji? Neither one makes sense to someone unfamiliar with Japanese. So why keep one and not the other? For consistencies sake shouldn't they have translated Aokiji to Blue Pheasant?
Did VIZ actually translate the word Rokushiki? I'm interested in what they chose to translate it to "The Six Styles"? "The Six Forms"? Or did VIZ just leave it?
I'm just full of questions today. Forgive me.
Yeah, Dragonball is based off both chinese legends and hong kong action flicks.
One Piece is based off world culture from every nook and cranny, which is one of the cooler things about it really. Pretending it should be kept to some japanese purism is bastardizing the world traveling spirit of the thing.

Aokiji is used like a name for the character, I mean be honest, you forget it's not his name every once and awhile too.
While Sogeking is used like the title it is.
One sounds awkward in english as well while the other doesn't.
"Sniper King" sounds like the name of a super hero or something, which he's parodying. While BLUE PHEASANT just sounds really weird when used casually in a name like way.

Techinically, Aokiji is not his name. It's more like a title. His name is Kuzan.

Ask and you shall receive…
Six Powers
Also, on another page, "Idiot-berg" is used. "Moron-ky" is also there.

Aokiji's 'name' isn't used any differently than Sogeking. Both names sound equally awkward in English. To me it would be like translating Kurohige to Blackbeard but not translating Shirohige to Whitebeard (shouldn't it really be White Mustache:getlost:).
VIZ 'translates' Sogeking to help English readers understand, but leaves Aokiji alone? That really doesn't make much sense. Aokiji doesn't even have any sort of pun to try to keep. It's as straight forward as a translation can be. Blue Pheasant.

Yes, but the admiral's titles, while short and sweet in Japanese (Aokiji, Kizaru, Akainu) would be much longer in English (Bluepheasant, Yellowmonkey, Reddog). Sniperking = Sogeking makes some sense because they're the same amount of syllables, and Sniperking isn't strange phonetically.

Actually, translating Sogeking to Sniperking LOSES the pun.
Only a pun that would need to be explained to an English reader.
Sniperking is fine. Keeping it as Aokiji is also fine. Aokiji requires a much shorter translation note.
@Mikey:

It makes me wonder how they'll translate the song…though I believe Sonny said that it'll be called Sogeking in the Funimation version. VIZ and FUNi should really start collaborating on vocabulary, people are gonna get confused.
The could just have Robin say something like ''Aokiji the Blue Pheasant, Kizaru the Yellow Monkey, and Akainu the Red Dog'' during her little introduction of them. That'll cover the names just fine, methinks.
