AGOG I hadn't seen that one Japanese interview before. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, although I still doesn't change my opinion on Hancocks chances :P. It merely means I have to 'further' accentuate the real reason I think she will join, the "love" angle of it was always from the start meant to be a quirk, and it has been as such for all my predictions. (Warning to others, its a longer post… again)
Yeah, it ends a lot of stuff about things…
Here are the facts I have to bring on "why" Hancock at the bare minimum is going to stick around, and why I think that means she will end up joining the group. But first lets get something out of the way, her "love" and why it doesn't really affect whether she joins or not. (even by Odas 'rules' in that interview)
Alright…
The love angle, like I said, is a "quirk" similar to Sanji's love for all beautiful women. She is supposed to act like a little school girl with a crush around Luffy (I mean she thinks a friggin hug means marriage to her lol). She will never actually pursue the relationship beyond these small interactions, but this "love" will constantly be in the back of her mind when she interacts with him. Luffy just needs to be himself and she will not change, and nothing truly romantic will ever happen. Luffy will act the same way to her as he does the rest of the crew, she will misinterpret it as his love for her, and she will not change her quirks, and it will never, ever progress. She is too shy around Luffy to make it progress.
I have nothing against her having that, but I have something with HER PERSONALITY not acting upon those intentions…
She's very selfish and there are many things that have her getting what she wants, furthermore, it COULD be that her intentions are to get his affection completely, she was VERY TROUBLED to see him part or to even take him there... [reference to Love Sickness and taking him to SA].
You cannot deny that she is GOING to want more than Oda would want to give her. Sanji has a system where he basically can't focus on a single character, therefore, his relationship cannot be serious because he would leave another individual behind and stuff… He cannot have BOTH girls, and he cannot have either... So he is stuck that way.
Boa Hancock only cares for Luffy and she's got the motivation to keep trying to get him, therefore, it will bring up a moment where she SAYS things like "beloved" and "marriage" out loud that he would hear. Therefore, it would bring up a conflict and her whole desire will be put on a spot light. If she is rejected, she'll feel BAD or TROUBLED and that may lead to trouble. if she is accepted, Oda broke his word.
So, we have issues where her personality forces her to act upon her feelings, and this makes her a difficult character to have in the crew.
That's what I see as the difference between the Boa hancock thing and Sanji one.
Alsos, like you said no one will join the group 'purely' because of love as well. There has to be something they wish to pursue where the end of the journey will lead to that dream likely coming true or at least the journey itself. I already said a good dream for her is simply freedom. Freedom to choose the way of life she wants, free of any persecution that would have caged her like a bird. She has lived the life of a slave, and on her home island she lived the life of eternally damning queen forced to hide her mark of shame because of fear she and her sisters would be shunned. She puts up this tough face to everyone, worried that with her as a higher figure, it would only take one slip up to reveal this fact. Her joining the strawhats would free her of her obligations as this other persona, free her of her shame, and she could live a life of freedom with people who would respect her no matter her history. Not JUST Luffy. This is one dream that is possible given her already complex but still very hidden inner personality. Could be something else, if she doesn't join its probably means something simpler that has nothing to do with the rest of the journey.
Personally, I think that a better solution for her will be something like this:
- Boa Hancock returns to AL.
- After Boa Hancock had been to the war and noticed the whole entire situation and stuff, she learned that honesty is important and so is trust from the acts of the WB pirates.
- Boa Hancock starts to trust her island and exposes her secret.
- She is instantly accepted by them all and is dearly overjoyed by this.
- Boa Hancock has her whole past overcome with these powerful actions and she will become a better character.
- Boa Hancock also saves the island and the island then saves her.
They all have a happy ending.
Of course, you are saying that this is what may happen:
- Boa Hancock goes with Luffy.
- AL has to have a reason to not be targeted then.
- Boa Hancock wants to seek his affection… And trying to get a bunch of random people not judging her...
- Boa Hancock sails with them for a "freedom" that isn't even remotely important to her, she's basically living a lie.
- Boa Hancock isn't ever given a conclusion because her island isn't forgiving her and she'd be a traitor to them.
Sure, she may have "Luffy" near her, but the sense of justice and support from her whole island won't be there and she'll just be there for LOVE still.
Furthermore, this "freedom" idea is once again not a suitable dream for her. They all have a sense of freedom they seek, but they have a DREAM that they try to achieve in that sense of freedom:
- Luffy wants Pirate King.
- Nami wants a world map.
- Zoro to be number one.
- Usopp to be like his father [brave warrior of the sea].
- Sanji wants to find All Blue.
- Robin wants True History.
- Chopper wants to cure all known diseases.
- Brook wants to meet Laboon.
Regardless, each and every character doesn't just focus on FREEDOM, they have a goal that they are going for… Boa Hancock hasn't even shown anything related to this sense, and if you were to assume what her goal was, you'd think it was to become the Kuja Empress...
These guys didn't think of these goals when they met Luffy, they had them in mind for a very long time... So, if Hancock's goal is to basically love Luffy, then it's far too recent and unimportant.
She's once again lacking a motive or dream to join the crew...
Here is some of more info that has to be resolved before we can just 'let' her go. She has a past tied directly to what is asuredly a larger plot narrative, the Tenryuubito. Until that plot comes back into focus, I really don't see Hancock going out of the picture. Oda almost always returns any characters that are directly tied to the outcome of current plot narratives, especially if its because of something like redemption. She hasn't gotten that redemption, she is still clearly hurting on the inside for what the Tenryuubito did to her.
I hate when people say that, she isn't anymore important to the Tenryuubito.
We've never been shown any interest from the Tenryuubito or anything of that sort, in other words, the manga doesn't show this at all… She merely HAD a past concerning them, she's NOT being forced to confront them. What she needs to confront is how she feels about her being a former slave, not how they'll find her. She merely is SCARED of them, which she needs to overcome by means of trusting her island... Her family.
Furthermore, Oda only needs to have her MOVE ON from that past, embrace the present and stop worrying about the past. For instance, we can examine Vivi and how she was so naive and such, yet in the current time frame, after her saga was over, she matured over time.
If Boa Hancock can get the same feeling and such, she too can relieve the anguish she felt from her past and embrace the present to live life to the fullest.
She doesn't need to basically KILL everyone for revenge, she's just trying to find a place to live peacefully, like her island.
For instance, Ace is a prime example... his dream was just to be told that being born is not a crime... Boa Hancock being trusted by her island solves her problem as well...
There are several smaller things that makes me think she won't be out of the picture, but those are based on hypotheticals or small parralels that 'might' not even mean much so im going to not bother mentioning them very much because those can be picked apart easily. Stuff like her 'betraying' the marines and me 'assuming' that she will lose her title before the end, the parralels with Nyon and how her leaving with Luffy would actually redeem Nyon in Hancocks heart. Or even worse parralels like her being a woman and most agree we need a new one (Hey I know a lot of you were thinking this!), she would also be a very strong new member which most agree we need after the Saboady incident (Of course a counter is some think she is too strong). Than you have some base form, might be predictions, could very easily be nothing stuff like how Kuja literally means 9 snakes and she would be the 'ninth' member of the group XD.
I've heard all of these, but they never impressed me at all…
Just for the record:
- I don't think she's losing her title.
- I don't think that she's leaving her island as a traitor.
- I don't think that the SH crew is forced to get a SUPER POWERFUL character next.
- I don't agree to Kuja being number nine and that is related to the crew member.
- I don't agree in any other random coincidence, unless there's a clear reason to it.
I'm against so many things for every character, but that's just me. If a character has a con, they aren't nakama material in my book.
I am in agreement with a lot that says her chances are not 100% and if you have a certain mentality around it, it might even be 10% or lower. But understand its still not 0%. There are still plenty of ways she could change, and it doesn't mean she has to join 'immediately' after this arc either to make them happen. Like both other female members of the group, the place where she finds herself within the crew might not happen till "Several" sagas later, but just having her stick around should increase those chances. To me if she goes back to Amazon Lily (and only way she would do that is if her title isn't stripped) she doesn't join, and just shows back up in a later arc to solve her redemption issue with the tenryuubito. And if her title is stripped or she decides to strip it herself, than I think she will end up joining because she will have no where else to go.
I don't see the title being revoked…
So, if she doesn't jump on that ship, I will think that I am 100% right and we'll never see her join the crew.
So, basically, when she isn't on Thousand Sunny prior to FI arrival, she's never going to join.
