Why would they go thorught the trouble of having an "original" name, when the rest of the flick is just as cliché.
It should've been clear a long time ago that they just dont care about orginality.

THe only thing that could make me hate Avatar more is if it had a sequel.
Ho boy….
Should you guys tell him or should I?
We need to break this softly...
! It's a trilogy -_-
Pst. The movie made a billion dollars in three weeks, and all the expensive hardware, software and computer models are already made so costs on any future editions would be significantly cheaper and less time consuming to create.
Why would they ever consider making a sequal?

What the fuck.
16 characters of pissed offedness
Hope they do the reverese fish out of water thing from Rush hour 2 for the sequal.
With the na'vi's being dropped of in the seediest part of the Bronx. Or being ambassdors to earth.
I have the urge to draw a comic of James Cameron, "…developing the technology for Avatar."
James Cameron:
"Okay guys! So first! You've gotta make this computer so it can take this giant worm/wolf/bird creature so it can be like, "GRAR!", and THEN! I want you to make it so there's all these like blue people, BUT THEY'RE NOT REALLY PEOPLE! They're just CG BUT it can't look like CG because it has to be SUPER-REAL CG, so you've gotta make this computer like some kind of...of...SUPER computer!!!!! And it's gotta be unique 'cause we're going to be making a HUUUUGE part of these amazing CG sequences which have NEEEEVER been attempted before in ay medium before ever-ever-never! Then! You've gotta put racing stripes on all the computers so when the computer magic inside them whirls the gears around, it'll be like "VRRROOOOOOM! MAN! I LOVE developing new technology!"
Why would they go thorught the trouble of having an "original" name, when the rest of the flick is just as cliché.

Because if they're going to put the effort into writing another language (or at least a fraction of it), then the least they can do is fill in the blanks.
And if they had done that there would've probably been someone saying well if they did that why didnt they do this and that as well. The bottom line as i can gather it is that we should just shut up and look at how pretty everything is.
For all we know Pandora is only what the humans call it. There could have been another name that was used by the Navi for it. I don't remember the Navi using Pandora, though I guess I could've just forgotten.
Perhaps the natives call Pandora "Earth" in their own language.
Pandora is a fine name, anyway. Better than some gibberish. Except since there just was another popular fiction with a planet with the same exact name…
GqbgncFCO0M
…I kind of associate "Pandora" with Borderlands now. But to be fair Avatar's Pandora is a moon and Cameron was probably using the name way before Borderlands even existed in any form.
Edit: Oh yeah! Hey, Greg, you might know. Were there any cool Japanese movies last year?
I mean besides that One Piece movie and that Studio Ghibli movie. Last Japanese movie I saw was Oi.. Oke.. a movie about an encoffiner and that one was a beautiful movie. Beautiful in a different way than Avatar. But, you know, I haven't really seen any other Japanese movies recently.
I read in my paper today that a deleted sex scene cut out of the movie will be put on the DVD. I don't know how to feel about this.
And humanoid/furry fans across the world fap in synchronization.
Story is a little vague for future films, though I can probably see them milking the crap out of it. Possibly the Lion King 2 type of thing.
Pandora is definitely just the earth name for the planet (considering the human nature of the name and the length of time it took to even establish communications with the aliens).
My main problem is using unobtanium and Pandora were so groan-worthy that they slapped me out of immersion for a couple moments. I can't say they ruined the entire movie, because that would be just stupid. To use terms of such profound transparency that they can knock me out of the film's world is a pretty significant failure.
The plot is a different story. I have many complaints about it and it was definitely a more profound problem. Even then, it was at least good enough to support the beautiful world that clearly carried the movie. You could see the zipper on the bad naming, though.
I found the wildlife more stilted, i mean Rhinocerouses with hammerheaded shark heads, or sparkly monkeys.
They didnt seem all that fantastic to me.

Fish Story, Fish Story and Fish Story.
It's not just the best Japanese movie I saw last year, it's one of my favorite movies period.**
Saw Avatar with my two other friends who were watching it for the 3rd time…yeah kinda crazy. Personally I don't know what they were thinking. Only movie I watched in cinemas which made me want to go back to watch it again was The Dark Knight.
Avatar to me was a 8.5 max out of 10. Had some good visuals and all but just lacked something, could've been better I guess.
P.S that marine guy was such a badass.
I can make better visuals using Paint than what the fuck I saw in Avatar…
Avatar has now surpassed the departed as the most overrated movie of all time in my opinion.
hey hey hey hey.
hey.
tell me your opinion on the departed please.
on topic -
seen it yesterday and i liked it, which i didn't expect. some visuals were great!
the falling tree for example when everything got dark.
there sure were a few things that bothered me but who cares.
Greg is right again btw, a few good scenes were just the talking people.
Yeah i was disappointed with The Departed too…not that it was a bad movie, just was expecting something better from movie of the year. BTW if you go see avatar and aren't at least impressed by the technology involved or at least appreciate the work that went into it, you're probably too brainless for me to care about your opinion. I mean on everything except story (which wasn't bad just painfully cliche) the movie scores high marks. With that use of 3D cameron might have revolutionized cinematography, i mean shots with depth can add an entirely different perspective to the shot. Not that 3D is new but for it to be used as something more than a pop-up movie, really nice.
As for a sequel. I hope he doesn't. If he does he better come up with a much better story but i can see this turning into something like The Matrix Trilogy where the first movie was good but the other two were just so convoluted and all over the place it just made you appreciate the first one more. He could make one though, like many people suggested Humans could just return with an army or the Navi could go to them (this could get real cliche) but hopefully he'll just leave well enough alone....
hey hey hey hey.
hey.
tell me your opinion on the departed please.
Its not that the Departed was a bad movie I just thought that his other movies were alot better and compared to taxi driver I thought that the Departed wasn't that good especially when Taxi Driver loses the best picture Oscar and the Departed wins it. I thought that when comparred to the other great movies of the year; Pans Labryth,Last King of Scottland,Little miss Sunshine and Blood Diamond, the Departed didn't stand out as a great movie like everyone claimed it was. Plus the rat at the end pissed me off.

Pan's Labyrinth was awesome as well but you should know that foreign movies aren't going to win best picture. Neither are Sci-Fi movies which is sad because I think that D9 should get it for this year  . Avatar is basically a shoe-in for best special effects though. Wonder what awards D9 could win…
I agree that D9 should win best pic but I see that going to Up in the air. The only thing I could see D9 winning is Best original Screenplay which is a shame because it is a great movie and deserves a best pic or best director oscar nomination
Give it up guys. Avatar is racist.
Robinne Lee (who had fuck-all to do with the movie) said so:
""It's really upsetting in many ways," said Lee, who is black with Jamaican and Chinese ancestry. "It would be nice if we could save ourselves."
NO MOAR FUN EVER! STOP THIS INSTANT!
Wow, this is getting pretty crazy. According to this article some people have "experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora"
http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Movies/01/11/avatar.movie.blues/index.html
What are your thoughts about it? Feeling suicidal? I actually felt quite happy after I left the theater (both times), cause it's just a great movie. Seeing it the third time probably this week.
I really didnt think it was that spectacular designwise, no one can argue that the technical side of it wasnt unbelivable but the actual world itself and it's inhabitants were bland as hell.
But yeah i've experienced something like that to, certainly not a depression or anything near that but that longing to be a part of those kinds of fantastic worlds. Except yknow good ones, not Avatar.

That is stupid as shit. People need to wake up and realize what they are watching. I love Star Wars, but I don't wanna slit my wrists because I wish I was Han Solo.
If people see Avatar and become depressed because they wanna live on Pandora, what does that say about our culture? Have we as a collective people, save for some individuals, suddenly become so shallow and removed from reality that we allow our emotions to be played with by a racist and plotless science fiction tech demo?
So, I saw avatar the other day.
I experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because I longed to enjoy the beauty of the time that now seems alien to us, when James Cameron made films like Terminator 2 and True Lies.
Because when you get down to it, it's all about Art Malik dangling from a rocket.

okay, i get your point and it's true. there sure are better scorseses than that. but you can't trust those Academy-awards anyway. they just wanted to give him an Oscar for a good film before he dies. and Departed was good enough for that.
and yeah, i hated that rat too.
nice DeBarted-quote, lol.
Dances with Wolves or Goodfellas. Vastly different movies. Both were up for best picture in the same year.
Make of that what you will.

It's amazing what kind of effect some cheap CGI can have.

I wonder what would be the odds of me ending up being a pirate in Grand Line if I slit my wrists open. Don't wanna try it though.
AVATAR!AVATAR!
Just watched it and, it was the bes movie ever. PERIOD.
The best thing created since OP.

I think these people really need to get out more. There's plenty of beauty that comes fairly close on earth.
They need to watch Planet Earth.

Fun's over, you can stop joking now.
Avatar 2? or possibly 3?
http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/movie-talk-avatar-trilogy.html
I think that's been known for a while. Not sure about here.
Alright, I'm going to see this on Sunday at an IMAX theatre. I've never seen a 3D movie before so this better rock my socks.
I have a strong ego and contempt for fellow man as wide as the Marianas Trench, so I expect to hate the movie but it wouldn't be the first time I morph from hater into obsessive fanboy. :<
If you hate your fellow humankind, this is definitely the movie for you.

That's mostly why I liked it.
Wow really James Cameron. Wasn't ripping off Pocahontas enough plagiarism in one movie check out this book by Poul Anderson
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_Me_Joe
Holy shit. Cameron needs to be called on this. I knew the movie wasn't original but I didn't realize that it was plagiarism.

I know right, if he wins any "Best Original Screenplay"awards I will be pissed.
Am I the only one who found the ways of connection between the Navis" and the animals of the planet a genius idea ?
It was pretty cool. I was sort of thrown off guard by it, I mean basically
! plugging themselves in to the planet to communicate with it. And them
! being able to control the animals with it.
It gets a bit ooky once your realize those hair extensions were their genitals.
