The Frog Princess (2D!!)

Sadly, I think advertising is what is winning out for Alvin and the Chipmunks. I haven't been able to escape constant commercials and previews and posters everywhere for it, yet I have yet to see a single one for Princess other than on the internet.
I've been saying for quite a while now that the entire advertising campaign for it has been pretty terrible as there's been no real presence for it outside of the Disney Channel and Disney XD. There's been the occasional ad on ABC, but very few from what I've seen. They're pretty obviously trying to do it on the cheap, but they're not even managing to do that well.
Marketing for Disney animation has been consistently terrible though since the late '90s with only Lilo & Stitch having anything resembling a real advertising campaign. Pixar films are the exception to that, but that's because they tend to take a much more active role in advertising the films and even their commercials seem to be losing that personalized touch.
-
I absolutely loved this movie. Louis's flashback: priceless.
-
@Thousand:
Near where I live, there's the equivalent of a 99c store movie theater where even the snacks cost as much as the tickets. The only drawback is that it shows three month old movies not the latest stuff but I don't mind, I can see movies that would have been too much trouble to see in normal theaters. Also, I can see the really good movies of a few months ago again in theaters. Right now they're showing up and I gotta see it again X3
That sounds exactly like what I need.
Robby stop being a wimp and catch the matinée already
Yes ma'am.
-
Yeah if you never feel its really worth it, just wait to go when its in the dollar theater, and that's less then the dvd XD
Finally saw this today. Beautiful, gorgeous art. Some wonderful musical numbers as well. I really appreciated what it was trying to accomplish, though I wasn't as wowed as I was expecting to be, with people comparing it to Aladdin and The Lion King I was expecting to get socks blown to China.
I loooove the 20s so I really loved the costumes, setting, the jazz <3 Though the movie did have a solid plot it seemed to me it was more about going OOOO WE DID A 2D MOVIE GAIZ.
I just don't think it should have been compared to The Lion King, that was THE movie for me when I was little. The songs from that movie still stick with me to this day, and I really didn't have that connection with any song from this movie, as good as they were, it wasn't timeless and catchy to me.
I could really connect to Tiana, but as for the other characters they really fell short in that department. Dr Facilier was an incredibly awesome villian though, I loved how awesome and dark his big number was.
-
It was so hard to pay attention to what was going on in the movie because I was so engrossed by the beautiful traditional animation that I thought I never will see in a long time.
Like everyone has said, Dr. Facilier was great. His song was great. Got it stuck in my head along with "Dig a little Deeper" and "Almost there". Didn't like how he got killed off that easily though.
I'm definitely paying for the DVD special edition when it comes out. Oh, did anyone spot carpet from Aladdin in the beginning of the movie and any other easter eggs?
-

I saw the movie again the other day, but I never caught Carpet. However, I did notice that the jazz players who were dressed up as animals (the ones that Louis befriends): one of them was dressed as a lion that looked suspiciously like Simba (not exactly, but much more like Rafiki's finger painting of him).
-
I agree that the advertising for this has been pretty bad.
I did notice the increase of commercials though, lately. While watching tv yesterday (the first time I was able to really sit down and veg for a long time), I saw the new commercial several times. It was a pretty, magical one set to "Almost There." Here's hoping they keep it on air and more people get the message.
-

It's the carpet being dusted out during "Down in New Orleans" piece or so, I think it's carpet.

Didn't catch that, they were moving a bit fast.
Also, I think the dresses that Charlotte had when she was small looked almost like all the other disney princess' dresses. I'm probably thinking too hard.
-
Just saw it
fucking awesome
I want to see it at least two more times in the theater
-
Yeah I saw the carpet, its at the very very beginning of the musical number when its first showing a glimpse of the city, look to the right.
-
On the subject of the new commercial that makes it seem more flattering, I noticed one of the quotes praising the film was (to paraphrase): "Best film since the 'Lion King'."
The hell? No it isn't. The movie wasn't bad, but considering all the lavish praise surrounding it, I either have bad taste or everyone else saw a completely different movie than I did. -

It's certainly not as good as the Lion King. I'd say it's more around Great Mouse Detective or Hercules level.
Oh, and don't think too much about that comparison. Reviewers sometimes have a habit of comparing animated movies to The Lion King. I remember when Spirit (the Dreamworks movie) came out that one reviewer called it the best animated movie since the Lion King.
L.O.L.
-
I'd qualify PatF a little higher than Mouse Detective/Hercules, but below The Little Mermaid.
If anything, it's at Mulan/Tarzan level.

Hercules below Mulan/Tarzan you crazy! Hercules was awesome!!!

The Lion King is a so-so movie, I honestly felt that so many people at the time liked it only because it had an African-American allegory wrapped up in the MacBeth, because the setting was Africa and most of the actors were black.
I feel the same about Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas - they had good points, sure, but as a package deal TLM, Aladdin and the films that came after Pocahontas were so much more.
Note that The Lion King's broadway adaption is unparalleled for Disney-stage adaptions, but that's not the movie.
-
aladdin is not better than beauty and the beast
-
aladdin is not better than beauty and the beast
It has better character development and a more substantive story. That's it.
-
the ending to B&B was beautiful
the ending to aladdin was puns and robin williams
beauty and the beast >> aladdin

Ehhh….what? Most of the actors are white (Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Jeremy Irons, Ernie Sabella, Rowan Atkinson, Moira Kelly) and nobody cares that the setting was in Africa.
-
Aladdin was an alright movie with a cookie cutter plot that's been done many times before, average musical numbers (compared to other Disney songs) and far too many contemporary jokes.
TLK was better.

You got me there. Maybe I was thinking of the main cast of lions.
and nobody cares that the setting was in Africa.
100% of the musical had black actors, so I think the African mythology and setting of the film (Zazu = South African) definitely added to its novelty.
Keep in mind, the first movie that had black mythology ever made by Disney is the forlornly banned Song of the South. So, while there were black sounding animals in various Disney flicks (Big Mama?) I don't think the mythology was really touched on again until TLK.

I suppose TLK's songs were better because they incorporated African sayings and vocals?
-
Lion King music was best because it had Elton John behind the melodies, PLUS Hans Zimmer on the more unique african instrumentals. (It was still Tim Rice on the lyrics, so that was the same as the other films of the period)
Also, it was based off Hamlet, not Macbeth.
Beauty and the Beast is actually better in the Broadway version. A couple of the added songs are bleh, but some of them are magnificent and add a lot of depth. I don't ever listen to the movie soundtrack anymore, just the broadway one. (Beast's "If I can't Love Her then Who?" is amazing.)
Lilo and Stitch had Hawaiian melodies and Elvis songs in it, and it was pretty awesome too. (The tv series has tainted it a little for me though.) And Mulan had chinese instruments in it. Having the surrounding music of the culture can add to the uniqueness of it, but its hardly unique to the Lion King.
-

Nah, they were better because they were far more unique and, in my opinion, were composed better. Elton John also helped.
Beside there were what, 2 songs that contained African sayings and vocals? I could probably make a case that there's two songs in Aladdin that do the same.
-

WHERE IS MY DISNEY ADAPTION OF The Taming of the Shrew?!

'Hakuna Matata' was the saying, and 'Circle of Life' had the vocals.
-
Oops. Looks like I started something. Yeah, maybe I should've just mentioned that PatF was about as good as GMD and Hercules, in my opinion. And of course the quality of Disney's movies (and all movies in general) are really just based on everyone else's opinion.
Anyway, I actually want to rewatch PatF some time (maybe a few times) so I can get a good a feel of it and decide how well it really stands up to Disney's other movies. As for Lion King, I think it's a bit overrated, but it's still one of Disney's best.
-
I think part of what makes Lion King so good is the opening. Not just the song, which is great, but that feeling of BAM! when the sunrise starts with the African chants. It immediately gets your attention and draws you in. Definitely one of Disney's better opening scenes, if not their best.
And no, Hercules is not better than Mulan/Tarzan. Hercules was saved by Hades and the music, everything else was so-so.
-
I'm definitely paying for the DVD special edition when it comes out. Oh, did anyone spot carpet from Aladdin in the beginning of the movie and any other easter eggs?
I saw it for the second time today and in the first scene I looked at Charlotte's top shelf. It looked like the dolls there were other Disney princesses.
King Triton is one of the floats in the parade.
-
i'm not sure where Mulan ranks on the Disney chain
i fukkin love that movie, and i'm 100% biased, but i think i'd rate it up there with the little mermaid and aladdin.
this always gives me chills
AARl1cMxS9wif i were mulan, i would have probably died on the first day
-
Why does everybody always forget this? It's my most favourite movie ever;
-
I think the movie is ranked at about the same level as Mulan, which is pretty high for me. It's not higher than Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, or Lion King, but it is high.
It's better than half of the Pixar movies, which isn't a slam towards Pixar movies (except Cars, I fucking hate Cars).
-
i though cars was pretty ok until i realized OWEN WILSON was lightning mcqueen
i havent watched it since
-
I went to see it yesterday and it was WONDERFUL
Tiana and Naveen are defiantly my favorite Disney royal couple; Tiana ranks in my top three Favorite Disney Princesses with Ariel and Belle. Character design was detailed and I very much liked Charlotte.
I think it was beautiful because it was so different from other Disney movies. Disney has come a long way. I applaud them. -
Charlotte was epic.
"I'm sweating like a sinner in church!"

Her overly exaggerated gowns and hilarious Southern accent won me over. I liked how she was willing to give up what she wanted for Tiana, because they were friends. To be honest, I wasn't completely expecting that.
-
i thought the whole issue of race was handled perfectly
in the beginning when you could tell UH OH BLACK GIRL POOR WHITE GIRL GONNA BE A RICH BITCH TIANA'S MOM SERVIN DA WHITE MANS made me bite my nails for a minute or so, but about 20-30 minutes in, i totally forgot all about tiana being THE BLACK PRINCESS
-

…...wait, what?
-
Why does everybody always forget this? It's my most favourite movie ever;
Pink elefants and promoting alcohol is not good for a childrens movie~~
-
…...wait, what?
i dont hate owen wilson, but i cant stand that stupid-yet-so-called-loveable character he always does in the movies, so i cant help but not like any of his other roles
-
I'm aware of his typecasting, I mean I was surprised he's Lightning McQueen.
-

Yeah, I was expecting her to turn out to be an antagonist. Charlotte was unbelievably spoiled and bratty, but she was still a good person and friend. I thought she was hilarious too.
-
Right?
Charlotte was like the coolest friend anyone could have!
The money for the benyas (sp?, and those things looked fucking delicious!)
Helping her after the table crashed.
And then the end of the movie! Holy crap, that was the moment I was afraid of and it made a complete 180 of what I expected!Charlotte is awesome.
Her voice actress seems to be a pretty unknown actress.

Was her dad's VA Sully from Monsters, Inc.? -

Was her dad's VA Sully from Monsters, Inc.?Charlotte's father? Yeah, that's John Goodman. He used to be on the show Rozanne (probably what he's best known for), and he's the voice of Sully in Monsters INC. He also did Baloo in the Jungle Book sequel.
He does a TON of voice acting right now, which is great since his voice is so good.
-
John Goodman's in it too? HEE! 8D
You can't help but love John Goodman, he's totally adorable. And he can go from "loving daddy" to "really freakin' scary when angry" so easily, so he's great for voice work.
FINALLY going to see the movie tomorrow. Can't WAIT.

I was seriously craving some gumbo and minced things by the time it was over.

It would have been so easy to make Charlotte the rich bitch, but they wisely played her as a more complex individual. Yes, she was spoiled and bratty, but all in all she was a good person. She was just a Grade-A DITZ.
Jennifer Cody is the name of the actress who played her, she's apparently a Broadway actress, which shows. If her performance as Charlotte is anything to go by, I hope she gets more big roles on the stage.
Broadway has always been good to Disney. In the early days Walt got a lot of his memorable voices from radio (Eleanor Audley being a big one, Wicked Stepmother and Maleficent, anyone?), but with radio plays being pretty much dead, one of the best places to look for voice talent nowadays is Broadway.
-

I actually went down to Downtown Disney and bought some Beignets from the Jazz Kitchen, they were really tastey Reminds me of a freshly made Funnel cake except in the form a soft round dumpling shape.

I could get some…But then I have to go to the Disney Port Orleans resort for them. But!...then I would get some beignets.
