Unlike many shounens, in One Piece, physiscal strength has an importan role. The strongest guy may have the strongest physical strength.
And, no manga has deeply involved so many professions/occupations like One Piece: pirate, swordsman, navigator, sniper, cook, doctor, archaeologist, shipwright, musician, naval soldier, warrior,…....
Things make One Piece unique from other manga

What makes it unique? Actually that's pretty simple.
All shonen:
chapters 1 -200 Hero goes on adventure, has fun, meets new friends and gets in the occasional fight.
chapters 200+ The minor characters get ignored, the sense of adventure and fun dissapear and it's all action and drama. One Piece:
chapters 1-200 Hero goes on adventure, has fun, meets new friends and gets into the occasional fight.
Chapters 200+ Hero is still on adventure, has fun, meets new friends and gets into the occasional fight. -
The fact that even after all this time, we still get new main characters that mesh so well with the old main characters that it's like they've always been a part of the group.
-
And he was simply poking fun at you for contradicting yourself.
I didn't contradict myself, It's not unique and if anone else says otherwise they are lying.
@xlo:Stop trying to be some nitty-gritty realist you fucking air-brain.
Your post suck to no end…
Your just mad cause one piece ain't unique, not even close. -
hmmm, One Piece contains many characters, and they all are important (at least for the arc)..
even the maincast now has 9 characters, and they all are heavily involved in OP stories…
-
If Shonen manga was ketchup, then Shueisha is Heinz. And a premium product of theirs is One Piece.
-
And Naruto and Bleach are the green and purple ketchup that they used to have. Those were pretty nasty looking  .
-
LOL, and a waste of money for consumers and marketing for the company too.

What does that make Dragon Ball?

Dragon Ball is the ketchup in the original bottle. Good stuff at first, but in the end, you would have to smack the bottle to get ANY ketchup out.
-
What about Dragon Ball was the original premium product, but then it ran low on ketchup (not completely out since it's still making money) and was replaced with a new bottle, One Piece.
-
I hear all this talk about Ketchup and Condiments and I think of this:
On-topic: One thing that's different about One Piece is that no one is perfect. A lot of shonen manga have "perfect" protagonists that make for boring reading.
However each character has a weakness or flaw.
The DF Users have the sea, Zoro has no sense of direction, Sanji is a pervert, Luffy is an idiot (though that's a common Shonen Trait along with perverse men), Usopp and Chopper are cowards (until they step up and KICK SOME ASS) and so on. -
- The legendary characters. People (in the manga itself, dialog from characters) talk about them in the past, how powerful they are. And we all (the readers) can't wait for their appearance!! Whitebeard, Admirals, Sengoku, etc etc
- Coverstory (Mini-Arc). Very unique.
- Colorspreads. Very beautiful. The compositions, the backgrounds, the details. And the figures; they're 'moving'!! We could see the crew having fun and enjoying the world of OP. Sometimes, Luffy act weird and uncool –but it's him!! (If you see other manga's colorspreads, the main characters look as they're trying to be cool..)
- Unforgettable characters (and their names), even the minors and past characters. We could clearly remember Mohji, Crocus, Yosaku, Rockstar, Tonjit, . .. ., .. ...
And they have their own designs and manners...
When I read Naruto or Bleach, I was like "who the heck is this guy?! What's his name?!"
-
I want to ask a question and i think this is the right thread to ask it. Do you guys think one piece is fully original or does it do old concepts and cliches right?Don't get me wrong i like one piece but some people just act ridiculous sometimes with the one piece did this first and people are just copying.I wanna here your opinions.
-
It's not original by any means it just reaches perfection within the old shonen cliches. One of the cliches we're all familiar with is the sorting algoritm of evil IE how a new stronger bad guy appears after the previouss' one is defeated. One Piece uses this as well but wisely is never about the bad guys it just uses this cliche as it's framework while exploring characters old and new and visiting interesting locations each with it's own culture and history. It's this attention to detail, willingness to explore and love for story-telling as a first priority and action as secondary priority that sets it apart.

I'd say a combination of both. It does old concepts and cliches right sometimes, and sometimes it's really original. And I'd say that's the best recipe for a good series.

Most of the reasons why one piece is unique and better than the rest of the manga stories has already been said but i don't think anyone has mentioned that in every chapter in one piece just so much happens, there is usually a lot of action and dialogue every week which is not the case in the other popular mangas ie. Bleach,Naruto where not a lot happens in one chapter, that's how the story manages to be so detailed.
What a really like about OP also is that the author uses pretty much every stereotypical shonen personality(luffy being stupid, sanji the wannabe womaniser, nami being a money hoarder) and makes them blend in together in a very funny way.
But the main reason why i think OP is better and unique is simply i have can't remember seeing a main character as incredible as luffy in any kind of story(remember how he climbed the frosty mountain on drum island with nami on his back and holding sanji in his teeth) he has a one track mind in the way all he wants to do is help the people he wants to help no matter the situation or problems and does'nt get caught up with right, wrong or justice or whatever.
-
I think my favorite aspect that deviates from the others is exactly that the fights tend to be a lot more chaotic, with the environment playing a big role, with fights hardly ever going one-on-one from start to end. They are realistic. And tend to pace a lot better than most…
-
okay i only need to brin up on arc to make you see why one piece is just THE bomb.. the DUVAL ARC… who in the blue hell could have predicted that as an arc?
i mean bloody hell... Duval was man who look like a caricature

QFT Honestly it's not uncommon to read a chapter of One Piece thinking I should be nearing the end of the chapter now and it turns out you're still only on page 10. It's a sad realisation however that Oda sometimes favors covering dialouge at the expense of drawing panels, suffice to say I'm not a big fan of the let's just draw a big picture and put balloons in it for everyone thing Oda sometimes pulls. Where's my smegging close-ups. Oh right that's what the anime is for but I think the manga does suffer for it.
-
Character quirks.
For example you have a powerful swordsman who uses 3 swords has somewhat demonic nature but has the worst sense of direction that he will get lost on a straight road. You have a character who utterly detests plates to the point of not wanting to serve food on them, which isn't exactly the most normal thing.
Also compared to many other manga's I read, One Piece is very light-hearted and not in the annoying way, well maybe except Sanji when he's flailing around like an idiot.
-
i remember one time when i thought "here comes the old shounen cliche again". Back when Rayleigh was first mentioned by sharky. He was said to be "100 times stronger then you boys". new character. insanely stronger then all those introduced earlier??? but then Rayleigh was introduced as Roger's first mate, then i thought "O Hell, that makes perfect sense. The Pirate King's first mate has got to be at least that much stronger" i was in love with OP all over again
-
The author cares about his story.
-
Oda has a stronger will to make a good manga than most other mangaka. Basically, he tries very hard to please everyone but still stays true to his heart.
-

I completely agree!
Oda can put a Naruto chapter in 2 pages! -
And make it 5x better.
-
I’m suprised that nobody had mentioned it yet, the BIG areason for OP to be as great as it is:
That’s a picture extracted from the character tournament. Like someone said there Buggy is a perfect example of the nature of One Piece manga and Oda’s way of donig what he does.
By the way, althought it’s true that One Piece is MUCH BETTER than Bleach and Naruto that doesn’t make it the best manga around nowadays (I had the feeling reading some posts that there are people who only read those three…). It’s true that it is a very unique and good manga but there someothers around that are as good or... but the shame is that they aren’t as famous as OP outside Japan.
Sorry for my English
Pd: I think taht if Togashi had be able to do it, HxH could had been the best manga of it’s time… :ninja:

How many memorable characters it has. When you see the ninth (or tenth) opening in the anime that uses that remix of "We Are", it becomes amazing how many of the characters you can recognize. When the main characters encounter old characters, your reaction tends to be similar to that of the main characters.
Also, there's how Luffy's stretching is handled like a combination of balloon and those stretchy hand things that you can get out of capsule machines for a quarter instead of the way that just about every stretchy super power gets handled. And the way it's handled with Luffy actually ends up seeming realistic in comparison.
And then there's the wide variety of animals. Just look at the list of them at http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Animal_Species. It is amazing how long the list is. It might be possible to make an entertaining anime that involves some guy in khaki shorts and an Australian accent going around the Grand Line and teaching us about the sea kings, hiking bears, kung-fu dugongs, south birds, and other interesting creatures while showing about as much fear towards the most dangerous animals as Luffy would. And now if you'll excuse me, I need to find out if there is any Crocodile Hunter and One Piece crossover fanfiction.
-
Oda actually brings back characters you'd never thought you would see again. (Buggy, Mr.3.) What's more, he uses them a lot. Some series coughNarutocough introduce so many frigging characters, but end up not really using them too much.
I'm STILL waiting to see if Kuro or Krieg make at least a cameo appearance.

The way they captured an entire world of amazing things into such an easily understandable writing style.
-
Also in these two mangas, when the hell will the hollow or nine tails stop beating the bad guys for the main characters. It gets a little repetitive especially when it is done to win every major fight. And the dialogue. Horrible. Naruto and Ichigo never say anything cool or even act cool. They have a Disney channel mentality. They wanna make friends with everyone they fight. I can't wait till One Piece gets the credit it deserves and Naruto and Bleach get the credit they deserve.
-
Well it doesn't make it unique so much as make it stand out. What makes it stand out is it's huge vibrant world. If you think about it because oda started such a huge world we have the amazing recent chapters at marine HQ. Since ennies lobby he has been slowly unraveling the plot for the current events which are amazing and make the manga more polished and interesting.
-
I think it's because there is so much mystery built into the One Piece world, and it also becomes very real in the readers' minds.

Luffy does have that.
-
Not what he's talking about! Luffys attitude is "if you think my chefs cooking is bad i'll beat you up". Yeah Luffy does make friends with almost everyone when things are said and done. But He kicks the crap out of them first! like Dorry when the ale blew up in his stomach, Luffy didn't think twice.
Luffy likes to solve problems by hitting them, not discussing the problem and finding the nonviolent solution. But not in the sense of Nightmare Luffy who seemed to LOOOOOVE fighting.

Interesting thread, I can't wait to see more thoughts. I honestly watch zero anime and read zero manga except for One Piece. But comparing it to other manga I noticed right off the bat how unique it looked compared to the rest of them. It was the anime that got me first, and I saw a glimps of Axe Hand Morgan and thought, wow an axe for a hand, never seen that before. Then I saw Kuro and was like woah! Thats basicly a katana on each finger! Luffy's stretching was also very interesting visualy to me, becuase every other stretching power I had seen was never used quit like his. Mr fantastic would always be making shapes of course, just like plastic man, but never have I seen them windup their arms like luffy to bounce the punch back like that.
Then I opened a Shonen Jump one day and saw that it was almost exactly like the anime and wondered which came first. I should have known better than that.
But comparing it to other comics I love that One Piece doesn't kill characters only to have them braught back to life a few years later. I hate it sooooo much! I'm glad Pell did what he did and was shown to survive within the next few chapters! Fodder dying as well as people dying in the past is good enough for me. But the moment someone really does die, and 5 years later we find out that Vegapunk dug up his grave and did something to revitalize him I will be extremely pissed. I don't know how you all can take that in other manga and american comics.
I also love that I have cried not because of death scenes but because of touching, heart warming scenes or some kind of scene of great achievement. And there are allot of them in One Piece.
Last thing is this isn't a one man show. I'm glad Luffy doesn't take on everyone! I'm glad Luffy can't take on everyone and someone even weaker than him has to take over.
Makes everyone absolutely important.

The nose picking.

i absolutely love allmost everything about one piece.
There is only one problem that I seem to dislike.
I preferred the more natural design of generetic characters in the first part of the manga. But now it seems they all look like the Franky brothers, well to me.
it's proly just me :P -

You just know Steve Irwin would have a hell of a lot of fun in the Grand Line.
Not necessarily something unique, but I love the vibrancy of the world. How everybody is important and Oda gives his readers real reasons to care for the characters. Sure, many characters in Naruto and Bleach are badass, but there's not a lot of substance behind that flair. Oda makes sure there's a good amount of substance behind the character.
-
I like the Power Scale is One Piece. Instead of overdone powerups, and a vertical line that says the person at the top is better than everyone else, One Piece has a slew of characters with unique abilities that all have advantages and disadvantages depending on who you're up against. I mean sure, Douriki, bounties, and rank in marines are all clear indicators of power, but not deciding factors..(well okay maybe Douriki lol). That's just my opinion.
-
It is so unique how Oda keep everyone alive, when they should die/stay dead. Fancy, it is unique I guess…?

Yeah that axe hand guy would have turned me off completely. Morgan's looks like he lost his hand and stuck a normal axe on there, this guy looks like he has amazing super nuty powers that I would yawn at. Only saying that because his axe seems to be clearly made from his flesh. I never want to know anything about that guy.

I was being sarcastic, pointing out that the "axe-hand" is done in other anime, quite a few, actually.

I knew you were. But I thought i'd respond anyway. does that guy have mystic powers?
