See, with developing technology, especially computer technology, people can do a lot more things easier. This is where the idea of robots comes in. Noone wants to do housework or make the dinner the traditional way anymore, they get lazy and so they start designing something that can do all those things. Since this is the era of computer technology, people will take any oppourtunity they get to cash in on it.

I heard about the 2D studio being closed down, and that made me very sad. As cool as 3D animated movies can be, my heart has been, and always will be with 2D. They're looking at the profits - the 3D movies are making more money, so they get rid of the 2D, not paying attention to the fact that the real reason why the recent 2D movies haven't been doing as well is because they're so cliche, formulated, and poorly imagined. Pixar movies are awesome because they have great stories and great characters. Disney is constantly trying to capitalize on previous successes rather than attempting to try something new. That's why they keep making crappy sequels to every damn movie they've ever made. It's like they're trying so hard to find that old magic again.
I've noticed a big explosion of 3D animated movies coming from every corner of Hollywood lately. It'll be interesting to see what happens if the market becomes so saturated with 3D animation that it loses it's novelty, and people start looking into 2D again.
That my friends is the truth. Seems like anime is the future of 2D now, unless you think Spongebob Squarepants is still gonna be big.

I really see CGI long term as more a threat to traditional acting.
If that's so true than why are there still a great deal of actors? You still need people to do voices, and, not to mention, animators also film the actors so when they go and do the animation they will sometimes use traits the actors have.
-
CGI is not a threat to traditional acting, but everything around it. The latest Star Wars trilogy was filmed mostly in CGI. In the future, there will be no need for stuntmen, real life action sequence, or even filming on location. The actors would just walk into the studio, do their thing and let the computers do the rest.

And stop with the sequels already! Just because those classics were good doesn't mean you have to do crappy, direct-to-DVD sequels that you think will have the same impact as the original. It's simply a matter of "You can never have too much of a good thing.". Get it into your heads, you simple-minded dumbasses! No one likes it when you try too hard to improve on classics, you moronic, ignoramous Eisner.Exactly. They're butchering classics. And as far as the sequals go, I know for a fact that 101 Dalmations has a sequal. While I haven't seen any sequal Disney has produced I doubt it is anything like the book's sequal (I forgot the title but the book was rather strange from what little I can rememeber).
-
Not only does it have a sequel but its live action counterpart has a sequel as well.
-
I was aware of "102 Dalmations", but I wasn't sure about the animated version. Just out of interest, what is the animated sequal about?

=( I'm sad too. And it's not just Disney, Dreamorks isn't doing traditional anymore either. :( So basically….. no one is doing 2d in America anymore.
What's ironic about all this though is that the creator of 'The Incredibles', was also the maker of my all time favorite move, 'The Iron Giant', which was 2d._

There will still be need for stuntmen. Even if scenes are shot in CGI there is still a need for people who can perform the stunts since in CGI the animators usually use motion capture. They used it in Lord of the Rings with Gollum, and chances are they also used it in Star Wars.

WHAT!
The 2D animation dept was the workforce of Disney and they just closed it down???
The television department is still there, for all the good that it does. The quality obviously isn't up to the same level that the feature department was capable of.
Not too long ago, Disneyworld… I think it was Disneyworld... added a Lilo and Stitch ride. The guys working on it decided that a nice bonus would be some new animation of Stitch running around so they went and asked if the animation department could help them out.
Nope, since every animator who had worked on the film had already been let go. f I recall correctly, it was when the entire Florida studio was shutdown not all that long after it had received a very expensive upgrade.
So they outsourced the animation to another feature department. Let that sink in for a moment. DISNEY had to purchase ANIMATION of one of their OWN CHARACTERS from ANOTHER COMPANY.
Eisner is an frickin' moron.

Good news for those who didn't know. CEO Roger Iger has opened renegotiations with Pixar.
Now if they do something about that wasteland called Toon Disney. Its filled with old Fox Kids reruns and passes them as a new series.
Satuday Mornings suck too. Nothing but out of production sitcoms

Ne? That's good, I guess. At least they can do CGI films (Which by the way are totally being used to death) and know that they have a chance.

I wish they'd do somthing with The Disney Channel too. :/ But I'm really REALLY glad they're talking about making up with Pixar. ^^
-
Well, that's interesting. Looks like Pixar got Disney right where they want them. :)
And yes, Toon Disney is mostly pretty lame…EXCEPT, they're showing The Tick animated series now. XD
-
Man, I remember back when Toon Disney wasn't crap.. oh well.
And the best cartoons by Disney was the WWII propaganda stuff… particularly "Commando Duck."
-
Hah I love Disney Propaganda…now THAT was when cartoons were good...not all this garbage they show on disney now. (cough hillary duff thing, 2 blonde twin boys, some pyschic etc..) sorry if any of you like this, but I find it demeaning. Anyway...it was all about how Disney portrayed Germany and Hitler's regime, (was the one with Donald's dream that he was working in Germany) great ep..anyone managed to see it?
*opps sorry if I went off track you know T-T

Yeah, they're going overboard all of with CGI movies, but at least if they get back together with Pixar, we don't have to worry about them doing Toy Story 3 by themselves.
I don't see why they don't do more traditional cartoon movies? If it flops, its not like they'll have to close Disneyland

**They seem more interested in making lightweight sitcoms that UPN wouldn't touch. They need to try and push the envelop a little, and start producing some shows with a Y7 tv rating instead of G rated stuff.

Is it wrong for me to be a little interested in their new movie Sky High! ? It looks intersting on TV but I just know if I go see it, the movie will total misrepresent superheroes, have cliche characters, extremely campy, and more cheese than Wisconsin_

They don't want to release flops, of course. They want all their releases to be big blockbusters. But like I said, they seem to be focusing on the wrong things. It's not that 2D can't make them money, they just are making lack-luster 2D fare, so therefore they aren't doing so well at the box office. And now the 2D studio is closed. :(

all u have to do to see how messed up disney is now is to look at the list of movies int he beginning…all SEQUELS, meaning there NO imagination left at disny. peronally i cant believe all the "real life" shows (meaning movies and shows that arent cartoon) that disney is putting out. pixar is definitely takin over and in my opinion they outta sue disney for takin most of the money made off of pixars past movies when disney didnt do jack squat

That's actually the reason why Pixar never renewed their contract. =)

Ooh! I remember seeing the one where Donald goes door to door selling war bonds. Those were cool.

Not really a big deal but Disney closed their animation division in Australia. They handled the sequals. I guess this means that they, aside from TV cartoons, have gone totally CGI and reached the point of no return.
-
I wonder if this will be the end of Disney? I mean…. it's illogical to think the company will be around forever.... I don't know. Maybe someone new will take their place in the 2d world.

I've seen the trailer for the upcoming CGI film, "Chicken little", and it seems halfway decent- it's a modern take on what happened after the old story. However, I've also seen a little "Disney Channel", and if the only 2D is TV-shows now, it looks reaaaaly bad for Disney, seeing as how the latest good show was Kim Possible. Beyond that, It's crap.

I sure hope it will be that superb Japanese animator who's Done "Spirited away" and "Howl's moving castle". I mean, Dreamworks can't be relied upon either.

Watch me as I show you my reaction towards the desicion of Disney.
walks out the room. doorslams AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
WHY!!!!!!!! Why must they pick at things that are already done!!!! They can't just think of new ideas like they usually do, no!!! They have to bring back movies that aern't even that good. Some were good, but they were done, over, finished!!!GASP I'm calm, I'm good. Stops destroying T.V I think that the first few, (except Bambi) are gonna be pretty cool. Now adays Disney worked on real life movies instead of animation. Like Sky High, which was totally cool. Hmmmm, it seems as though Disney is running out of ideas….
-
They're so busy trying to run ESPN and ABC, that they forget what got them there in the first place.
I'll probably look at Valiant. Its from the producers of both Shrek movies so its worth a look
Lilo & Stitch will air new episodes Aug.22 to Aug.28 With the last episode guest starring Kim Possible.
Lastly they're coming out with DVDs of Rescue Rangers and Ducktales, this fall. Ah, the good old days.
-
I loved that trailer for Chicken Little!
BGM…Dragostea din Tei.Awesome.
And also,Lilo and Stitch will be guest starring Kim Possible?!?
That's two different art styles!
I think they'll pull a Jimmy Neutron and Fairy Oddparents special style..(3D Timmy,2D Jimmy) -
They also had a special when penny Proud met Lilo and Stitch, too bad I missed it.
I think they're doin' these cross-overs to kick off the Movie Lilo and Stitch 2.
What's next, Lilo and Stitch meet Jake Long?? -
@OP:

I don't think there's really a point of no return. Should it become fashionable and profitable for them to go back to 2D, they most certainly will.
They'll make a really big deal out of it too, like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. -
What?
The Proud Family.meet.Lilo and Stich.
WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO!? -
What's next, Lilo and Stitch meet Jake Long??
I didn' hear about Proud, but they've already done Jake Long.
-

What's next, Lilo and Stitch meet Jake Long??That or their running out of ideas (which is a shame as I love Lilo and Stitch). there also said to be a crossover with Recess :P. The shows getting near the end of its run anyway due to a rule that say their shows must end after 65-episdoes.
-
My favorite Disney movie is Aladdin, but Disney cannot be forgiven for what they did to the Doug series.
-
There was Lilo & Stitch crossover with Proud Family, and Jake Long!?!
Went to see Valiant and I must say its been a long time since I cried after watching a movie. Damn, I'm going to miss my $6.50!!! This was a horrible movie. No character development, predictable plot, tired flatulence humor, and the movie seem to just whiz on by. And the audience reaction…there was more noise at an abandoned library. They didn't even clap at the end.
I'm seriously thinking about posting my address on this thread so everyone can find me and kick my ass.

Maybe its not the point of no return but there are logistical problems if they try to reopen it after a long period of time. They got to hire a task force, buy new equipment, hire new staff, etc. which can make the initial start up expensive.
New CEO Robert Iger has said he wanted to regain the crown, they ceded to Dreamwork, in animation. Unfortunately, the word "animation" is a broad term
-

To the second season?? Yeah that was pretty lame. But that title song was like crack to me…
Recess is officially dead, I used to watch it everyday as a pre-teen, but after the movie it slow down until a silent halt. Now it seldomly comes on at all...

I didn't think it was awful, so much as it was just vanilla. The animation was okay at best, though often sub-par, and the characterizations were pretty shallow. Did they ever even actually name the villains in the actual film? It's pretty sloppy to have to find out that name of character by the end credits, let alone the entire villainous cast, such as it was. Also, it's pretty odd to see a film about World War II Europe and not actually see or hear a single actual reference to the people that conquered it. It's almost like they were afraid to mention that these were Nazis.
And the reason it just seemed to whiz on by was that it was only about seventy minutes long, possibly eighty. If this is indicative of what Disney thinks can compete with Pixar and Dreamworks, well, let's just say that John Lasseter is going to be dancing on the Mouse's grave.
-
Disney just isn't Disney without Walt. Sure, the company did fine for a while after his death, but that was because those who were left behind were those he trusted. Bright imaginative people. I mean, Walt died before Pirates of The Caribbean opened and before construction had even begun on the Haunted Mansion. But look at them now! The two greatest theme park rides ever! Walt knew what he was doing when he picked his staff. Now it's just corproate bigwigs who are only on the lookout for more profit, and they don't give a damn about creativity! Crimeney! Now I'm steamed!
I'm an avid Disney fan (albeit, old-school Disney, not this new junk), and it makes me horribly sad to see Walt's great vision being destroyed by money-grubbers! I swear, if Walt came back from the dead (and he might. Keep your fingers crossed), I'd be the first to join him and build a giant mecha-suit for him.

Chicken Little, which is going to be out next summer (I think), is supposed to be 'the answer' to Dreamworks and Pixar. But, Dreamworks ain't doing so hot as a business.
-
I don't hold very high hopes for Chicken Little. It seems much too focused on the funny, there dosen't seem to be any 'meat' in the story. >__>
-
Eh, I've seen one preview of Chicken Little, so far I don't feel excited.
Robert Iger has taken over as CEO and he wants to reinvigorate the animation franchise…through CGI movies.
Best Disney Animated Movie (IMO and in no particular order)
Lion King-good music, good characters, and a very sad death scene.Best Of the rest. Lilo Stitch, Emperor's New Groove- No singing(Yay!!!) and broad comedy.
Worst Disney Animated Movie(again IMO)
Hercules-like the gospel music, but they totally butchered his story.
Hunch Back of Notre Dame-Sure there were some adult themes but they kept doing one musical score after another. It slowed the plot down. -
Toy story-Tom Hanks-Pixar=crap
plain and simple(and leave classics alone)
-

I saw this one preview with the characters dancing to Dragostea din tei. I…. wasn't sure what to think... if that wasn't a desparate attempt, then I don't know what is. How many people know of that song in the US anyway? And those that haven't heard of it will think....?

Best: Beauty and the Beast- Nice story, wasn't afraid to show blood and knives, the songs were good, and the animation was beautiful. What I'd call a real 'classic'. Though, I think the Lion King is awsome on a different level. =)
agrees with your best of the rest
Worst: Home on the Range- story was lame, characters weren't very interesting, and oh gawd, an an irritating angsty Rosie O Donnell cow. o__- Art was nice though.
Pretty much all the sucky sequels. -
I used to love disney… but most of the sequals (latley, the more recent) have begun to upset me. I want new stuff. =( The only Disney sequal I really liked was the Toy Story one, and I'm not up for a third.
-

Yeah, I started to list Beauty and the Beast. It was fabulously animated. I usually don't like musicals but I like the Gaston song. Aladdin was a good one too.

Great minds think alike.

Favorite Disney movie…hmm...
For the longest time my favorite movie was Sleeping Beauty. It had a wonderful score, albiet based off of the ballet, and Melificent is my favorite Disney villain to this day. Now i'd probably say it's a tie between Aladdin and the Little Mermaid. Both had wonderful music, and more great villains. After those i'd probably say both Fantasia films. Fantasia 2000 is HOW A SEQUEL SHOULD BE DONE. It was produced(?) by Roy Disney, and kept to the original intent of Fantasia, in which a new version would be made every few years with some older pieces left in, which is why there were a whole bunch of new ones along with the Sorcerer's Apprentice. As for the worst, i really can't say since it's been a while since i saw a great deal of the disney films, and i never bothered to watch any of the newer ones save for Lilo and Stitch. I am not really looking foward to seeing Chicken Little, or the two films they're producing after it, Rapunzel and, get ready to cringe, Toy Story 3. I'll probably still go see them anyway for 'research' reasons.
And on a side note, what some of you have against CG films? It's not like it's going to replace traditional animation completely. And besides, IT IS NOT THE MEDIUM THAT MAKES OR BREAKS A FILM. IT IS THE STORY.
-
Best Movie- Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, Lion King, Little Mermaid, TOy Story (Honorable Mention- Snow White)
Worst- Sequals Aside, my least favorite would be Hunchback of Notre DameBest Sequals- Beauty and the Beast Christmas, Aladdin 2 and 3(2 would have been better with Robin WIlliams as Genie, but still….) Toy Story 2, Little Mermaid 2, Lion King 2 and 1 1/2(Timon and Pumba rule).
Worst Sequals- CInderella 2, Peter PAn 2(Octopus...WTF?), hell any other sequal sucked! -
And on a side note, what some of you have against CG films? It's not like it's going to replace traditional animation completely. And besides, IT IS NOT THE MEDIUM THAT MAKES OR BREAKS A FILM. IT IS THE STORY.
I don't have anything against CG films. I've seen some great ones. Its just that it has replaced traditional animation. Its more cost effective and the audience prefers CG more than traditional. Disney has closed all their animations studios and there are no plans from Dreamworks, that I know of, to release traditional animation either. It the end of an era.
-
I prefer the Disney classics. I just love Lady and the Tramp, and Robin Hood, Jungle Book, 101 Dalmations, and yes BAMBI. And I can include Fantasia, right? That is probably the most amazing animated movie ever created. (the Fantasia 2000 or whatever was meh)
I was never very fond of Pinnochio, Alice in Wonderland, and Sleeping Beauty.I thought everything from The Little Mermaid through The Lion King was great. Then they started to go downhill. I never even saw the last few ones they did.
-

Well, the thing is CGI provides a very different feel. It changes the language available.
Classic animation has distinct limits. Do a 360 degree pan, it's free in CGI and potentially quite costly in traditional.
