Oh, Sandra Oh.. The reason that I keept going with grey's anatomy for the 4th season. The jewish korean. Blind casting is sometimes funny.
The Last Airbender movie sucks
-
-
@The:
Make it Michael Clark Duncan.
Okay, but then Terry Crews gets to be the Earth King.
-
Well, the non-Asian leads is nonsense in this case, because we are dealing with relatively no-name Caucasians given the greenlight. Usually its at least acceptable (to me at least) to assume bigger named actors and actresses with more box office appeal are the driving force of such a decision…
Of course if the film was actually good, the whole issue would be rendered moot.
Seems like Hollywood should be getting better scripts as a priority over the color of its cast. Though (Justifiably) its controversy over its casting ethnicities will probably be the only thing people will likely remember about the movie after its all over
-
Y'know, I'm still confused about the whole coffee thing… honestly I was paying too much attention to the fact that Uncle was actually drinking something to notice if he said anything relevant to it (that and we might've been ripping on something going on earlier in the scene), so I truthfully can't recognize this as a troll line or not. Which is really sad if you think about it..
What's also sad is that knowing this will not redeem the movie in any way, so I wonder why I bother asking...pensive stare into the distance
-
No joke, I know a guy who was a huge fan of the original series and didn't hate the film.
I just finished writing a letter to the Pope to have him beatified.
-
Some people probably don't want to suck up their pride fending off the outroar from the real fans. Because well… Maybe one would think he or she is a better person for liking this trashy film.
-
I hope that Scott Pilgrim vs the world is good, I haven't been a fan for more than a month, but the material seems doable.
-
That does not sound very good.
-
@Ao:
So he didn't feel any anger nor dissapointment the week before writting this, except during… the movie discussed in this thread. Promissing!

Toph isn't asian enough, it'll probably be To' Fi' and a random Lang at the end for more Asianess.Wasn't that the original concept for Toph?
Anyway, The Ember Island Players takes on a whole new dimension after seeing the film since the cast's criticisms of the play apply directly to the movie.

It didn't really register at the time, but I'm pretty sure that Earoh did invite Zuko to join him in a cup of coffee at one point. Considering that the Fire Nation is more Indian in the film than the Chinese/Japanese blend of the show, I guess that makes sense… sorta.
-
My family's making me go see this movie :ermm: . My brother wants to see it because he doesn't believe any of the people making bad reviews. He says that everyone on IMDB is a critic.
-
Maybe he'll take up being a critic as a career after the movie is over.
-

In his last movie he had a critic brutally murdered, so I'm going to say that's a big ten no.
-
Okay, but then Terry Crews gets to be the Earth King.
I'm cool with that.
One of my friends suggested Ridely Scott should have directed this instead. I think Russel Crow would make a fine Aang, lol.
-
@ Malintex : not as bad as the eeeeeevil Mayor Ebert from Godzilla , who wanted nothinb but to destroy things and eat candy .
Glad they were being mature about the criticism for their previous movies .
-
Wasn't that the original concept for Toph?
no, you're thinking of the dude earthbender in the opening sequence
-
Saw it today. It wasn't as bad as the reviews were making it out to be but it was pretty mediocre. The main kids were really annoying and the acting wasn't all that good. I did like the ending, though, and some of the fighting was pretty cool.
-

I thought that was The Boulder. Anyway, I didn't mean the character design, but the concept: a big blind guy who uses his voice to see.
-
Just watch the movie…ehhh yea the review are not lying about this movie. The movie made bending elementals like a joke. Really it took 6 dudes to earth bend one rock... Someone could have throw a rock faster and harder. This movie is only worth watch if you just watch it and not listen to the awful voices.

I found two relatively positive reviews on a forum I visit regularly.
Overall, I'd say the film was fairly good. Good action sequences, great score, decent casting, and for how much they had to cut out, they managed to do a decent job of trimming things down and mixing scenes together into an acceptable film adaptation. That isn't to say I'm without complaints, however. Some name and term pronounciations were annoying; ones that jumped out were "Aang" like "Ah-ng", "So-kah" instead of "Sokk-a", "Ee-roh" instead of "Eye-roh", and "Agni Ki" instead of "Agni Kai". Some cinematography was awkward, having the occasional sweeping shot where it's hard to make things out. The film's biggest problem, however, is that it has a bad start, chopping from one scene to another and cramming it with some pretty awkward exposition. Forgiving these complaints, though, it was still a pretty good adaptation, but I'd definately recommend the original series over this… in fact, it's probably best to see the actual series before seeing this film at all. If you haven't, things would probably come across as doubly contrived, which is probably why critics panned this. As a fan of the actual series, though, I give it a thumbs up.
I saw it last night. I agree 100% with you. The pronunciations were just odd. I think they were trying to go for Japanese authenticity where they didn't really need it. I mean, Avatar isn't really an anime.
Spoilers belowOne thing I found odd as well was the whole earth bender captivity part. Originally they were loaded on a metal ship so that they couldn't actually rebel. The fact that they loaded the earth benders in a place where they could earth bend the entire area seems kind of dumb. That was very minor though.
I was really hoping at the end when Zuko was about to go up against Zhao that they would fight and have that same outcome as what happened in the show only much earlier than that part. Zuko beat Zhao in the show much before that and they skipped that which I would have loved to see.
On the positive side, they were very close to the original in most parts and had good action and such. The casting was standard. Could have been better, but not too bad.
That said, I found it to be an enjoyable film.

So in other words, if I just press 'mute' and watch the movie imagining the voices being done by Vincent Price, Tony Jay, and Orson Welles, everything would be fine?

With Jerry Lewis and Groucho Marx as Zhao and Iroh respectively, pretty much.

This is going to be the best movie ever.
I'm so making Orson be the voice of a chick, it's not even funny.

Which reminds me , we have to get back to bringing Vince back from the dead .
Who has the virgins ? :ninja:

I think everyone's favorite part of the movie was them leaving with their 3D glasses.
-
Just watched chapters 1-4.
Iroh is awesome.

You could also try imagining all the dialogue as done by Mick Foley's The Boulder persona. "The Avatar is… conflicted."
On the upside for this film, the Rifftrax version should have a hell of a lot to work with.
-
Haru's dad's part about "I heard that cowards float" should have been "I heard that your kind float" to come closer to the original insult.
-
Changing the prison sequence might well have been the dumbest thing about the entire film. If nothing else, they could have set the same scene in a town where people didn't use earthbending for fear of reprisals without it making the least bit of difference. The way the film went about it made the firebenders look like complete morons.
-
@Xai:
Goddammit! I'm sick of all these insults to TLA and Shaymie. I can't believe you guys haven't figured it out his source yet!
Here's the deal folks - remember the theatre play Aang and the gang went to see near the end of Season 3? You know, the one where Toph is the big muscular guy. That is the actual source of Shyamalan's movie - it's almost perfect.
Lol, especially because in that play, Aang is played by a girl… and in the movie, Noah Ringer's stunt double (who's used in most of the action scenes) is a girl xD

I saw it again. 3 Stars.
It isn't as bad as you guys make it sound.

taboo , could you maybe post a bigger version of that ?
The text is hardly legible and my computer won!t finish loading it for some reason .

Mostly dark-skinned Asians. It just so happens the only Water benders of any worth are white.

Oh really
http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/movies/night_bad_air_day_o52hYSMg32J2hhcPmI7taPHave you actually read the other movie reviews? The 1 i just posted was a very scathing attack on M. Night Shyamalan. I mean…lol. That movie was doomed the moment they got sum1 like him to direct it.
-
I think a lot of people were caught off guard by just how poor of a job M. Night Norrinraddlovesshallabal did directing this film. After Signs and The Lady in the Water, everybody was used to the idea of him writing nonsensical plot turns and peons to his own greatness, but there were a lot of errors in basic filmmaking in The Last Airbender.
Using narration to tell instead of dialogue and action to show, the way the film randomly cut back and forth, Zhaojo Jojo constantly explaining his plan, and so on. Had the acting been terrible and the dialogue hamfisted but the film competently directed, then critics might have went easier on it on "well, it's just a kids' film" grounds, but since it's poor filmmaking, they feel free to open on it with all guns.
-

Everything is made out to be worse than it really is here.
-
can't wait to see this movie, can't WAIT
missteps like these deserve to punished thoroughly - perhaps too thoroughly
he took amazing source material and crapped all over it with his "vision" - i don't believe fans can be rightly trusted to direct a film, but alienating a fanbase by displaying a swaggering ignorance of the things that made the series amazing in the first place is a sure sign the director is making a major mistake
the scorn is well earned, and the sheer mass of "Battlefield Earth"-level scathing reviews (from fans and critics both) says more about the abomination than any amount of justification and rationalization can here - it does not function on a technical, emotional, or rational level
special effects do not a good movie make
avatar is about

"Once I retake Ba-Sing-se I will retake my tea shop and play pai-sho every day!"
The dream of a great man.

So, is this movie bad in an entertaining way (like the Twilight movies) or is it so bad it's dull? I might see it if it's the former, but the latter is just a waste of money. A painful waste.

It's not a train-wreck, it's a wrecked train.

6 ANIMATED movies, half a book each.
Would been so much better.. See the evangelion films! with 2 they got to the 20th chapter already!
Now the original aang's voice has aged and can't work with young aang. You could move up the age a little to make it consistent though. 12 is pretty young.

Actually his voice changed during production. They always said they'd be okay with that possible eventuality, since it IS a coming of age story, but the sound guy just pitched it up a notch, so you cant really tell.

Kicking a dead horse but I found this.
-
Notice how the rock stays in the foreground.
-
Urgh, Earthbending that is for ONE earthbender One stomp or strong foot stance, and one GENTLE punch.
Take out the "Gentleness" to turn it into an Attack, not just a floating rock.
