Kishi is really good at bringing out emotion, it's just not the kind he's going for usually.
Actually…he used to be. But after going through some of the Uchiha nonsense and now Nagato's sob story, it just really is getting to me how lackluster it's been lately. (yeah, stuff like Zabuza, Lee and Gaara are classic...but nowadays it just feels like emotion's on autopilot)

One way or another, Pain's Pain is going to boil down to.. 3 or 4 deaths=entire village of deaths.
Le Miserables this ain't. Magneto at the holocaust, this aint. Even freakin' Sasuke, this ain't.
Last tuime Kishi successfully pulled at the heartstrings is when he killed Neji and Choji and almost killed Akamaru.
And then he went back on that!

Also I agree with Hinscher about the characters getting tossed aside. This is kinda biased because I love Rock Lee but remember the chuunin exams, Lee would have beat anybody except, obviously, gaara. The 8 gates makes Lee damn near unbeatable and when he gets drunk he's even more so. In the shippuuden movie Lee combines those two and destroys so why wouldn't he just do the same to any other enemy. 5 gates drunk lee would anihilate all, what is it 8, versions of pain without trying. Problem is he'll never do any of this because he has a code of honor and fights like a gentleman.
The most likely reason why you won't ever see Lee use the 8 gates is presumably out of fear of him winding up a cripple again.

I think a good quote for this would be, "with all the subtlety of a Mac truck."
It's often the little things that really get the heartstrings. I think back to Naruto's first chapter, when we see all the families there for their kids at the school, and Naruto's just swinging there on a swing all alone. THAT to me says sadness and pain more than any screaming tear-fest that we've gotten post-time skip. It seems like Kishi's policy has changed to, "tragic moments mean only screams of despair."

See that's how you do a sad scene.
Not by slapping on a random dog when just before having the ones responsible for the parents' death go "lol my bad" when overall this flashback is basically just the same as other characters.
God this comic sucks.

Anyway, Nagato's reasons for his "Pain" seem extremely petty right now, but honestly, I'm not surprised. Like everyone's said, Sasuke, Naruto, and Gaara all have him beat by a mile. Kishi better have something to redeem this, because it's not looking very convincing right now.

! The dog bit was just an add-on to probably make him more miserable. it's obvious the only ones that matter were Nagato's parents and Yahiko. I thought I said that back when I posted the spoiler.
As for side characters…they were only introduced anyway as flag-posts for Team 7 sadly. The problem is Kishi made them more interesting.

Wait. They didn't develop in any meaningful way during the first time skip, and you think another one will help matters?
The side characters will never do anything of consequence again. EVER. Despite the fact that they have more personality and are more interesting, and had co-star status in part 1, Kishi has officially ditched them. Ignoring them for 200 chapters was an obvious sign, but Pain's invasion, where he had 6 bodies with different abilities was the perfect time for the sub cast to shine and do… stuff. But no, they just stood back, because "They'll just get in Naruto's way." No time skip is going to fix the author not caring about them.
Again. The side characters will never do anything of consequence again. Naruto and Sasuke are the only ones on level to fight anybody of power now.
Sakura might yet get a power up when Tsunade is killed, but... this is Shonen. Girls suck in shonen. Series is heading for its conclusion, Naruto and Sasuke have 3 or 4 major fights left between them. (including between each other.) Assuming there isn't a giant beast in the moon, this series can be wrapped in about a year. Side cast won't get involved, especially now.

So I guess it finally comes down to this. Someone tell me where Kishi lives and I'll "deal" with the matter myself. Just know the series is gonna be very Shikamaru and Rock Lee heavy, think double dragon.

I think that's the majority opinion. Never thought I'd take the side of Sasuke, but he at least has a legitimate reason for being pissed off and angsty. Nagato (so far) has the thinnest excuse of anyone in the series.
Y'know, I'm thinking that maybe part of it is that Nagato wasn't born a ninja, he was just a local. Ninjas are taught from a young age that "death's a bitch, grieve and live with it", but Nagato had no such upbringing.
It's still a lame "pain", but that's just my pondering.

Maybe if the central cast was as situationally useless as the main cast in Bleach maybe Kishimoto would pull a Kubo and give the supporrting cast more screen time. Which would just lead to some of the same problems marring that same series.

I just wanted to throw up after he pulled the 'He's the same as me.' with Naruto and his enemy for about the 50th time this series. Off the top of my head Neji, Sasuke, Gaara, and Haku. Not to mention his allies who see themselves in him like Inari and Lee. It's overplayed. Then his past is crap, and this is by far the worst of the I'm like him scenarios yet. It seems like it's forced and Naruto actually falling for the we're alike is one of the most annoying things. I just feel it's kind of bleh right now about where the story has been heading for a while.

But then... he showed up like two pages before he died, so... its hard to be attached.
Really, this entire time Pain has been around, while fighting Juraiya, and then Naruto, he should have been muttering the names of his dead friends and dog. it would show they were constantly on his mind and he was always thinking about them, being reminded of their deaths.
I mean, in OP, Brook kept thinking about Laboon during his entire arc, constantly reminding us of what drove him and what he was trying so hard to do... and the whale wasn't even dead but it was still incredibly touching and moving! This... not so much.

Don't blame Tiny for this…it was just part of adding to the sad-fest.
Aside from that, the chapter really wasn't too bad considering that we sort of got an "alternate Naruto without any protection from the world", but my only real complaint was just how they kept having Yahiko go on and on about being the "God", making essentially "Pain" even more disturbed. (being a "god" when already dead and a corpse)

The best part of the chapter was the Hanzo guy's reappearance. Besides that, it was mediocre at best. Nagato's "pain" seems mostly to stem from being… well, ignorant of the world around him. Sorry, kishi, but I don't have sympathy for idiots.
