Greg, great job. Is there any info that you could get on Jinbei that your sketch doesn't show?
JUMP Festa 2009…..(8)....
-
-
I gasped and jumped and I think scared the people around me who…I dunno...the weight of it didn't seem to hit them that they just saw the WORLD PREMIERE OF A CHARACTER FIRST MENTIONED IN CHAPTER 69 but whatever their loss.
What a freaky thing to do.
-
I really like all this detailed reports you did Greg when at something like this I probably wouldn't lol.
Were/Is there anything at all hinting towards the next nakama?
-
Finished my compilation of videos from JUMP Festa. Hope you get a few chuckles out of it.
I'll wrap this up later by editing the first post to include my overall thoughts and link to all the reports in one easy to reach location as well as post the few still pictures I have left.
Were/Is there anything at all hinting towards the next nakama?
No, not at all.
Sadly, I cannot take much from that sketch.
I realize that but I cannot emphasize enough what a rough sketch it was by Oda. Allow me to elaborate. It looked, for better or for worse, almost exactly like that. The only thing I don't have confidence in is the spacing of the eyebrows. Oda drew it on a small whiteboard about the size of a laptop and even so, the space he used for it was only 1/3 of the total space as 1/3 was used for Boa and the other for his answer. The sketch he drew of Hebihime was, as compared to the complete version we know, very rough. This means his Jinbei was also rough. Which means the one we eventually see will probably be far more impressive. However, that is Oda's sketch for better or for worse.
Regarding the black thing on top, not sure! Could be part of his body coloring, could be hair, not sure. It really wasn't clear.

Hey Greg, I'm curious about the consequences of getting caught filming, or taking photos? Would security just confiscate your camera, or just make you delete the data?
The whole "no videos" reminded me of a pervious convention I attended where they had security looking in the crowd for anyone filming the ZZ concert and Back-On concert. Luckily, we were able to snag a video of "A to Z" without getting caught.

Honestly? They would probably ask you to stop if it was only once. But they make a BIG deal out of announcing it in Japanese that there exists the possiblity that they MAY take your camera. I can't really argue because well, they're going to sell it as a DVD so you're basically stealing from them in front of their eyes. It depends who comes to see you too. If you get one of the slicked-back hair guys in a suit they might take your shit. Where if you get college student Taro doing this as a weekend part-time job to make ends meet he'd probably ask you to stop.
One person commented on one of my videos last year that they threatened to take him out of the hall. You really can't plead ignorance either because they display GIGANTIC images of all types of cameras with X's through them multiple times before the start of the show.
-
Thanks Greg…Is there going to be more videos?
lol...they deport you for taking a pic at some artwork. lolBTW, kinda off topic, WOW just WOW at the proposal. You the man.
-
That really rough sketch of Dr. Indigo looks like Robotnik from that Sonic cartoon years ago.
Jimbei still looks like the Cueball trainers from Pokemon to me, only with hair.
-
It looks like a Gasparde from movie 4 with these eyes and hairs to me xD
-
Okay, I added links to all the major posts in the thread in the first post. Happy to answer any other questions but other than that, th-th-th-that's all folks.
-
Wow, Greg. I had no idea your voice was so deep, it did not sound that deep in your proposal videos. Guess that's due to the language, right? Either way, I loved the starting skit you guys did. It made me chuckle. I presume that means Haru knows English.
-
Guess that's due to the language, right?
Very astute! Yes, I raise the pitch of my voice when I speak Japanese. On the other hand, it helps Japanese speakers to lower the pitch of their voice when they speak English.
Haruka is pretty damn good with English. She has very high listening skills. The TOEIC test I mentioned above is an international standardized test for business English. She scored higher than some of the English teachers at me school ^_~
She doesn't speak English very much but she's a trooper and can use it just fine.

This year Franky, Zoro, Luffy, Nami and Usopp's VA were there. Yao, Nakai, Tanaka, Okamura and Yamaguchi respectively.
[…]
So they were going to do a gift exchange and each of them brought presents with them. Yamaguchi brought a […] Zoro bought […] Franky brought a […] Tanaka recently visited Matsuyama of Shikoku island and when she visited the castle there she painted some pottery so her gift was […]
Just noticed that while reading, but Okamura/Nami didn't brought anything? What a killjoy. XD

I just read through your report (thank you so much Greg) and with the news of Jinbei and the video clip of everyone thanking Oda, it made me really overwhelmed with a feeling of gratitude for Oda and the work he's doing. It's such and amazing inspiration I cannot explain in words.
And Jinbei: Exactly how I always imagined him (you know, roughly)! I can't wait to see how he'll turn out for real!

This post makes me very happy.
There are so many people in your position who NEVER speak English around their wife (or vice-versa; I had an German teacher who never spoke German to his wife or kids even though he had only been living in America for 7 years). It's pretty stupid seeing as how you can NEVER change your first language (you'll always think in your native language, so why hide it?).
-
Dam Dam Dam, this would have been the most perfectest birthday present, ever in my whole life. But it's still cool to hear about it. I love Oda.
Crossword: What'sa Cueball trainer, do you have a picture?
-
(you'll always think in your native language, so why hide it?).
I don't think that's true. I've only lived in Canada for 4 months and I think in English now… Not totally exclusively, but mostly. :ninja:
-
wow. just want to say thanks, greg, for going to all the effort to compile all this stuff for those of us who couldn't be there. really loved the story and video with the surprise thank you to oda sensei. :)
-
Just noticed that while reading, but Okamura/Nami didn't brought anything? What a killjoy.
My bad, she brought something. I totally forget what it was. Sorry!
-
I half expected your wife so say 'hah' after that line about dignity. :p
-

It's alright, I was just a bit surprised when I recognized that she was the only one, who didn't brought a present. I even thought that was some kind of gag that as "Nami" she's too greedy to buy something. XD;
Forgot that the last time… thanks for all the information. ^^

Just a quick semi-inconsequential question.
I saw your Overview video of The Jump Festa and noticed something, are there any/many Cosplayers at Jump Festa?
It looked almost like a normal convention to me, but I noticed Zero Cosplayers. -
He had a picture up here with Bleach cosplayers.
-
There are some. They used to walk the floor a lot but nowadays the majority of them stick to one location BETWEEN the convention halls.
Honestly? I'm fed up with Japanese cosplayers. They're a fucking pain in the ass. Part of this is the fault of my fellow gaijin who BLATANTLY IGNORE THE RULES AND ETIQUITTE of cosplaying and picture-taking in Japan. Because gaijin think it's okay to just snap pictures anywhere they constantly stop cosplayers to take a picture, even if they aren't in the cosplaying section. This is a problem because the cosplayers get shit from staff when they pose other places than the designated areas. But on the other hand, IT'S JUST A PICTURE! In a relatvely open and out of the way spot last year I had a Perona flat-out tell me that she would not pose for a picture since it was not the designated area. So unless you wade through the masses of people waiting to take pictures with a single person, you can't get a picture with them without being considered rude.
It's basically a cluster-fuck and why I generally try to ignore the culture but if I see something interesting I'll make an attempt to get a picture.

P R E A C H
btw thanks for the video. I also didnt expect your voice to be that deep.
-
That Preach thing is getting kinda old.
Oh, and the video intro was funny. "Dignity? Nope."
-

Sounds like she was pretty in character. XD
-
I remember hearing you mention that Greg…
I suppose its understandable, but in the west Cosplay is such an open thing and everyone poses where you ask them.
-
I assume there was no mention of a Bink's Sake CD release?
-
I assume there was no mention of a Bink's Sake CD release?
I think Greg would've mentioned that. I'm hoping it happens eventually though.
-
Thanks for going to all this trouble to share the info from Jump festa, Greg. That news about Impel Down lasting for a year is BIG. And none of us who live outside of Japan would have any way of knowing about it if it weren't for you.
Chatwin said he's, "very honored" (looking off-camera) to be able to play the role of Goku. He says that he tried to put part of himself in Goku so you can expect to see part of him in the "iconic" character. Thanks. Thanks man. We needed part of you in an ICONIC character.
^Holy shit that was funny. I remember watching DBZ on Toonami when I was 10 and thinking Goku sounded like a clown.
-
@Greg Quoting the Chatwin Video: This is why Nozawa is, and always WILL be, the only Son Goku (And Gohan, and Goten, and Burdock, and Tullece…)
-
I like Sean Schemmel more and see him as the only Goku in terms of voice. I'm not trying to troll, I just like the FUNi cast over the Japanese.

What about Stephanie Nadolny?
But in all seriousness, while sheer familiarity makes me like FUNimation's cast more, I find the Japanese cast fine, although Krillin sounding like Luffy confuses me sometimes, and Goku having a female voice still bothers me a bit. But them or the FUNi cast is fine. Certainly I'd rather Masako Nozawa's female voicing then Justin Chatwin's acting.

I've actually seen a couple interviews with Chatwin sounding similar to this. You know... like someone just informed him of what Dragon Ball is and that he'll be playing Goku in a movie...
...like 5 minutes before the interview..

Read it like a pervert!
Anyway. I saw Speed Racer the other. Whoever the kid who played Speed Racer did a pretty good job. He didn't have the giant eyelashes though. (I'm kidding about the eyelashes).
Speed is easier to act as than Goku I suppose.

Ermile Hirshe is an awesome actor.

Finally got a chance to look over the Festa info…somehow Jinbei looks appropriate in an Oda way, dunno why. And if Impel Down lasts a year, will it just be Impel Down or will it also include anything that happens after (like say Whitebeard vs. everyone)?
-
For now I'm taking that as meaning that this whole storyline will be roughly a year. Luffy being in Impel Down, Whitebeard, the rest of the Straw Hats getting back together, etc.
-
You do realize when Oda says one year he means three, right?
-
No doubt we will see white beard within the year and everything that goes with him. Could you imagine, the entire year Luffy running around in Impel Down and at the end of every chapter, "31" hours befor the execution. No way.
-
You do realize when Oda says one year he means three, right?
That's why the ''for now'' is there. Yeah, I'm gonna peg their entrance to the New World around chapter 700 or whereabouts.
-

This almost makes me want to laugh…but I do understand, somewhat, what you mean.
Nozawa, herself, was also surprised to see herself as adult Goku.
If you are talking about child Goku, however, you have got to be kidding yourself. She is the PERFECT voice for young Goku.
There's only a few voices I consider on par with the Japanese ones.
-Cell
-Mr. Satan
-Goten
-Young TrunksGohan's voice is pretty good too. Actually, I think people would've been less critical of the DB movie if Chatwin was a teen GOHAN instead of GOKU. The highschool plotline works better and he looks more like a teen Gohan than a teen Goku.
-
^really you liked dub Mr. Satan… cough... ahem, i mean Hercule?
to each his own i suppose
